Why Do We Dance?
Just why are we dancing? As Square & Round dancers, are we any different than any other dancers when it comes to why we dance? I think not.
This time I am going to step away from Square & Round Dancing for a moment & talk about what motivates us to dance. If you listen to psychologists, they will tell you the top personality traits of dancers are openness and conscientiousness which means they are usually curious, imaginative, and value variety. If you listen to fitness instructors, they will expound on the health benefits derived from exercise resulting from dancing. A mathematician will most likely talk about the complexity of patterns that can be accomplished from dancing. There is even a book with the title: “Power of Dance and Its Social and Political Uses”; wow! Oh yeah, and are we looking for love?
When you are dancing, what motivates you may be quite different than the person(s) that you are dancing with. This is where the social aspect of our dances comes in. Between the dances, we all talk with each other about many things. It could be helpful if the question “why do you like to dance” is raised. The answer that you receive may help with insight into another dancer’s motivation to dance. Knowing that could in turn enhance our overall enjoyment of our dance.
The bottom Line is this, If we know why we like to dance & tell others why, we will be able to have a much more enjoyable time dancing and maybe interest those who aren’t yet dancing to look into dancing because dancing is supposed to be fun right?
Sharing is caring,
Tim Keck
President
Editor's Note
As we move in to summer, it's likely that many clubs are starting planning for their fall lessons. As you do, remember to register your lessons on the same web site where you enter your dance flyers, https://squaredance.gen.or.us/ClubInfo, but on the "Lessons" page. We'll start listing September classes in the August issue.

Federation Meetings
The next Federation meeting will be hosted by the Re-Vu-N-Q club, and will be held at the Salem Square Dance Center on July 16, 2023.
Summer Festival
There is currently no Summer Festival planned for 2023. Re-Vu-N-Q is hosting a "celebratory" dance on July 15 in association with the state meeting; see their flyer for details.
Mid-Winter
Mid-Winter Festival 2024 is scheduled for January 26-28, 2024, at the Linn County Fairgrounds in Albany.
Mid Winter is busy in the planning stages to get ready for everyone to come join us. We have verified with the fairgrounds, that much to everyone's relief, there will be food available onsite this upcoming year. We are also excited to announce that due to popular demand the printed program book will be back in January. I sincerely apologize for the spelling errors in my previous article. The committee does have ribbon packets and the hotels are awaiting your reservations. We look forward to seeing you all January 26-28th, 2024!

We have been having at least two square dances a month in Hall B at the Emerald Square Dance Center from 1:30 to 3:30PM mostly on the 2nd and 4th Sundays. We are sometimes lacking only one or two people just shy of two squares so would truly love to see a few more advanced dancers come our way. Meanwhile, Fred always makes sure that the tips are short and those sitting out get on the floor as soon as possible. We are a fun group of dancers, some of whom have been dancing for a long, long time. Fred finds great material online with such great callers as Bronc Wise and Darryl Lipscomb, two of our favorite callers. When Kris Jensen is in the area, she will come call for us which is so great as there is nothing like dancing to a live caller who can see the floor and where we are having problems. She’ll be with us next fall.
We’ll be dancing this summer, perhaps three times in July depending on people’s schedules and twice in August. Please check our website at cas-sd.yolasite.com to see exact dates and call Fred Beisse to get on the email list so you will know exactly on which dates we will dance for sure.
Please come and join us if you are in the Eugene-Springfield area visiting or perhaps having moved here recently.
Dances are casual, by the way.
See you in a square.

We have decided to start dancing twice a month again. The first month we started was June. I cannot report on that dance on June 17 as it is after this article was written. Roger Putzler called this dance.
K.C. Curtis is calling our 4th Friday dance in June.
I want to report a bit more about the Fiesta Dance held on May 13 with our sister club the Whirl-A-Ways. We have been doing this annual dance together in May for qujite a few years. Normally, before we went to one dance a month we would host on the second Friday and the next year Whirl-A-Ways would host on the 2nd Saturday. Next year we will have to see who will be hosting. No matter who is hosting since it is a combined dance all help with the food for the taco bar and the set up and clean up. It was a smashing dance again this year although we did not have many out of town visitors—perhaps because clubs to the north and south of us had their own taco bar dances—apparently we all like Mexican food!
Some Single Trees attended the Strawberry Festival in Lebanon June 3 and enjoyed the calling of Jim Steele and the cueing of Jackie Gale. It was so much fun seeing our friends from clubs to the north in the Alliance group and the strawberry shortcake was delicious and refreshing.
Seven Single Trees attended the Buckeroo Round Up for both days with Eric Henerlau calling and Randy Lewis cueing. What a duo! There were five squares on the floor at times on Friday night and more often on Saturday night. They had loads of workshops and dancing available all day Saturday. Several of us who were not going to the round dance workshop on Saturday morning took time to go visit our former caller Dale Roberson and his wife Betty. How fun it was to see them again in their lovely home in Sutherlin high above a lake. He sent us away with a bottle of his award winning wine to be auctioned off at the Wildlife Safari dance on Sunday.
If you ever get the chance to dance to Eric Henerlau from Corete Madera, CA, be sure to do so. He is a terrific caller, fast paced for sure but watches the floor carefully. We all enjoyed his sense of humor also.
All dances in the summer or in hot weather are casual. Other times square dance attire is admired but not required.
Hope to see you soon.

We are back to our regular Sunday dances from 4 - 6 each Sunday with our caller, Tim Matteson. Everyone is welcome. All our dances are casual. Tim calls all levels and helps us if there are any figures giving us fits.
We are famous for our array of food each Sunday and are easing back into that following the pandemic. We still offer a lot of individually wrapped goodies and have hand sanitizers out.
We invite you to join us any Sunday from 4 to 6. It might be wise to call David Lajoie at 541-520-7311 to make sure we are dancing. We shouldn't have any dark Sundays, but one never knows. We dance in Hall A at the Emerald Dance Center, 2095 Yolanda in Springfield. The floor is cushioned, and we have heat in the winter and air conditioning in the summer.

We are back to our usual schedule of the second and third Saturdays. We have Plus from 7:00 to 7:30 and then Mainstream with rounds. Mike Kious, our caller, is still feeling the effects of the September car accident. He's better which is a blessing. Camille is a blessing as she drives, etc.
Speaking of Mike Kious and Camille, a baby shower was held at the square dance center on June 10. Their car was full of wonderful things for the new baby! We are all excited and over the moon as is Mike, Camille and their families!
Zola Jones went through shoulder surgery and is back dancing! Ron Gates, our Vice-President had successful eye surgery. Both eyes have been done, and he's back to regular activities. Yay! To get you up to date on Carol Reetz, Larry's wife, we just learned that she is now on hospice at home. Please pray for Larry and his family as they weather through this difficult transition. Carol may be moved to a very nice memory care unit close by. This will give Larry and his family some time to rest while Carol receives excellent care. And, we can visit Carol. She still has the sweetest smile and a ready laugh!
We had another free community dance June 17. The community dance in April brought 40 new people into the hall with angels totaling more than seven squares. Mike had them dancing grand square, square through 4 and many more figures. It was awesome and amazing. Everyone had the time of their lives! A number of the new people had shared the information on their social media. It's exciting! Please join us at the hall in Springfield at 7:00 if you're reading this before the 17th of June. We need angels to show everyone just how much fun square dancing can be! Thanks!
Please join us the second and third Saturdays at the Emerald Dance Center. We are usually dark July and August, but look for special dancers as the hall is air conditioned, and we miss each other.

Golden Squares will have their final dance at the Woodburn Estates location August 6 at 1:30 p.m. for pre-rounds and 2:00 p.m. for mainstream squares and with every third tip plus. Randy Dibble is calling, and Julie Stiers is cueing. They will be folding after the dance is over.
The club has only six members as one just recently passed. We are sorry to see them go but Woodburn Estates has made it extremely hard to hold a dance and they have not danced in over two years. Come and support them as they say goodbye. If your club has one of their banners, bring it along with your visitation to give it back.

It's very exciting to see our dance floor once again filling up with happy faces and dancing feet. We are now in our demo season with our first demo being at World Beat the end of last month. Our next demo will be at the Marion County Fair on July 9 at 11:00 a.m., and then at the Salem Art Fair on July 22 and 23 from 1:30-2:30 p.m. each day.
We take great delight in being able to perform, but our main goal is to show those watching what a great experience clog dancing can be, and we hope will encourage them to join our learning to clog classes in the Fall. We still have plenty of room on the dance floor so would love to have others come join us come September.

We capped off our dance year with a Hawaiian Luau, complete with an erupting volcano cake. We’re dark for the summer, yet we already have the next dance year planned and our lessons are set to start in September! It’s been great to have our new dancers on board, and we hope they’ll continue dancing over the summer.
Congratulations to our new club presidents, Tom and Jaga Giebultowicz. Many thanks to Jean Goul and Ken Corbin for their years at the helm, which included the challenges of Covid. A hearty thanks as well to all the wonderful visitors who danced with us!

Our time is slowly going away to select a new club caller and cuer. We had two callers and cuers in May and when the month of June is over, we will have two more callers and cuers in attendance. Not all who are calling or cueing are auditioning, so it is important for the club members to attend and exercise their vote for who they would like to come back in July.
We have a club meeting on June 17 to conduct some business and possibly get some dates set for new dancer dances. Our 64th birthday dance is the second Saturday in March 2024. We won’t be able to set lesson dates until we select a new caller.
July will see us collecting decaf coffee for our designated charity, Windsor House, so the residents can have more than one cup of coffee a day. They have been on the receiving end of our coffee donations for a few years now and they are very appreciative. They even get hot chocolate and juice on occasion. Our silent auction in December gets them some money for movies and other things they might need.
Remember that we are dark for August because Polk County Fair takes up our dance hall for Creative Arts space. Lots of talent in that building in August
We will be attending the final dance for Golden Squares in August. It is sad to see one of our council clubs close their doors.

We finished tango on June 1 and for the rest of the summer, we will be dancing for our two-hour time slot. No class, just some occasional work on a troublesome step that Randy may see from his perspective on stage. Later, we will decide on a new rhythm in September. We will start the new rhythm on September 14.
June 15 is our 47th birthday dance, with cake from the club and ice cream and toppings from the dancers. Some down time to have a little time to chat and munch.
Randy will be gone the first week of July to attend ICBDA. He and Debbie are teaching a dance or two there. We will be watching to see who is or is not coming. If early enough, we can cancel and let Randy know it is not worth the drive down for him. Hope this works. Watch Facebook for updates.

IT'S SUMMER!! Come join us in our air-conditioned hall all summer long!
June 7 was our Mainstream and Plus Class Graduations. Eight new dancers joined the ranks in the Mainstream Class and there were five dancers that graduated at the Plus level.
We had three dances in June. On June 16, our Guest Caller was Darrell Kalmbach. On June 21, we took a Wednesday evening off from lessons and went to visit the B & B's at the Abernathy Grange for their Wild West Dance.
Randy Dibble will start a new Plus class on Wednesday, June 28, from 7:00-9:00 pm. The cost is $8.00 per adult dancer and $4.00 per Youth dancer. Our 5th Friday, June 30, is a Plus Dance. July 7 is our Patriotic Dance, so wear your Red, White and Blue.
Enjoy the weather and see you on the dance floor.

Did you attend the River City Dancers 33rd Anniversary Dance on Saturday, June 10? It felt like the fun times before COVID. I counted eight squares dancing to Darrell Kalmbach and Tami Helms and oh-so-many Red, White and Blue colors. All three Councils were present. There were three guest callers, and three Visitation Banners were given away…a great success.
Thank you to the visitors and Veterans who attended our “Flags of Valor” dance with Scott Zinser calling and Dave Cooper cueing. We had an exciting time with them and our two squares of dancers…but who doesn’t enjoy celebrating our Nation’s freedom.
Chaps and Petticoats will be dark in July and August as we fundraise for our Mainstream Lessons that begin September 11.
Come find us at the Hubbard Hops Festival on July 15; we will be serving Elephant Ears and Corn-on-the-Cob (D St. at 5th) at our food booth. On August 16 at the Clackamas County Fair, Chaps and friends will do a square dance demo and audience teach beginning at 8:00 PM on the Main Lawn Stage…see you at the Fair.

Our social dance on June 10 was a splendid affair, with dazzling Don Wood coming down from Olympia to call for us. This was our Pride Dance, so a profusion of rainbows filled the dance hall.
The Ramblers are dark, but not dormant, during the summer. We will not have our monthly dances, but we do have plans to stay active.
We will host a free taste of square dancing on Thursday, June 29, at the Oak Grove Community Club. All are welcome for this free dance, which will be called by Stephen Cole and will last from 7:30 to 9 pm. If you know anyone who’s been wanting to give square dancing a try, this is a grand opportunity for them.
You can see us dance in the Portland Pride Parade on July 16. And we will be putting on a dance demo in Sellwood Park on Sunday, August 6.
Hope to see you out and about!

The May TVC meeting presided by TVC President Ursula Kuhn was held via Zoom with 14 attendees. A big thank you to Dale Brabham for stepping up to fill the vacancy left by the resignation of Ursula during the meeting. We are still working to find a Vice President and Caller Advisor. Andis Garuts is continuing as our Secretary and Marie Clem is our new Treasurer, replacing Tammy LeBlanc. Thank you Ursula and Tammy for your service, and Andis for your continuing service. “Dancing Under the Stars” will not occur this year, it is hoped we will resume the tradition in 2024.
Kudos to the TVC club reporters. The TVC is the only Council in the state with 100% club reporting to the OFN. This is a bit of news I do not mind repeating. Keep up the good work!
There are no TVC club anniversaries this month but you may want to consider combining a day at the beach with a visit to one of two of our smaller clubs. The Hayshakers dance every Sunday from 5 to 7:30 at the Pacific Grange in Warrenton, midway between Seaside and Astoria. The Wavesteppers dance every Tuesday at the Senior Center in downtown Tillamook from 4 to 6. Combine the beach, Tillamook Cheese Factory, and dancing all in one outing. See their reports and/or websites for further details. Both are mainstream clubs.

The loss of long-time caller Jim Hattrick has left a chasm in the square dance world. He was a friend to all he met. One of his close friends was Daryl Clendenin. Daryl graciously stepped in while Jim was ill. After Jim’s passing the club asked Daryl to be our permanent caller and he has kindly accepted.
So now on to the summer months of July and August. Our hall has no air conditioning so we have chosen to go dark as far as our Friday night dances.
However, we have decided to conduct mainstream workshops on Sunday evenings beginning at 6 PM. The idea is to hone the skills of our class in preparation to dancing in the fall. So if someone wants to stay on top of their moves, review what they thought they knew or just want some dance time this is for you.
Just be aware that if the temperature is forecast to reach 90 degrees or above, we will not dance. If we have your email we will email you about the cancellation. If you would like to get on our email list, send your email address to tomabrown2@aol.com and she will see you get our emails. Just because we are dark does not mean we will not be dancing. Look for us to be in a square with you this summer.

The Eager Beavers dance Plus with Phase II and III Rounds every Monday from 1:00 to 3:00, including holidays, at the air-conditioned Aloha Grange.
Our club was extremely sad to lose our long-time caller, Jim Hattrick. He was hired as a caller along with George Clark to replace our founder and caller Dottie Swenson when she retired. Jim called for Eager Beavers for just over 28 years. His obituary appears in the June issue of the OFN.
Our Memorial Day Dance on May 29th featured Randy Dibble calling and Jeanine Norden cueing, and we are grateful to Randy for stepping in to call this holiday dance.
On July 3rd we will be wearing red, white and blue for our Fourth of July dance with Darrell Kalmbach and Jeanine Norden calling and cueing, so come join us if you have the day off!

Five Hayshakers belong to the Angora Hiking Club which stayed in two lodges in Silver Falls State Park over the Memorial Day weekend.
Saturday night May 27th we visited the Silver City Squares who dance in the Waldo Hills Community Club out in the middle of nowhere surrounded by farm fields all around. WOW!! Lot of young energetic dancers. The dance lasted to 11:30. We’ll be back next year.

May I have this dance? Of course, there will be plenty of opportunities. On May 13th we had our Mother’s Day Dance. There were practical aprons, frilly aprons, aprons that tied around the waist and aprons that tied around the neck. The question remains, who wears the apron best, your mom, the guy running the barbeque, Ratatouille, Chef Boyardee, Julia Childs or that person across the square? We just forgot to have a vote.
On May 23rd, we joined the Aloha Grange Yard Cleanup. We whipped through the debris and weeds in a short two hours. Thanks to the following Hoedowners who participated, Bart and Debra Welch, Chet and Pat Wolter, Mike and Sally Duyck, Donnie and Krystal Laas, and Chris Stover. The Grange looked 100% better and aren’t we lucky to have such a facility?
May 25th meant a visitation to TriSquares for their Hippie Dance. Isn’t it strange how my grandkids love tie- dye but don’t know “People are Strange” by the Doors? I guess costuming has more staying power than some songs.
On May 27th we held our Red White and Blue Flag Dance to celebrate the Memorial Day Weekend. Our guest Terry Halley was calling, and Randy Lewis was guiding the round dancers on the floor. We hope your holiday weekend was a celebration too.
Looking ahead, our July 8th dance will be a Cowboy/Rodeo theme so break out your hats, boots and twang. Then on July 22nd we’re going to have a Picnic Dance7/22!
Summer vacations are in full swing. Have fun, wear your sunscreen and we’ll see you at the next dance.

We dance mainstream from 6.30-8.30pm and our hall is air conditioned. For additional information visit our website, http://oakhillsquares.com/. (see link above)

R Square D hopes everyone is enjoying summer! Our “Boxcar Boogie & Chili Feed” dance on May 12th had five squares on the floor all night. Craig’s calling and Susan’s cueing were excellent, as always. We enjoyed chili and desserts after the dance.
July 12th is our annual “Crazy T-Shirt” dance. Put on your favorite t-shirt and join us for a fun dance with Caller Craig Abercrombie and Cuer Susan Healea! We will serve ice cream sundaes at the break.
“Hawaiian Dance” is the theme on Wednesday, July 26th, and we will enjoy root beer floats after the dance. Craig is calling and cueing that night.
Our dance format is the same year-round with Plus and intermediate rounds from 7-8 PM and Mainstream with Phase II rounds from 8-9:30. All of our summer dances are held on Wednesdays with casual attire in an air conditioned hall!

The Sunset Promenaders had a fun May. On Friday May 5th we had a visitation to the Valley Squares to celebrate their anniversary. We had more than a square attending and took home a banner! The next day, May 6th, we celebrated "Cinco de Mayo" with our mainstream dance and had excellent attendance.
We are so excited to have quite a few new dancers joining us at our dances and many who have joined our club! We will have an "Independence Day Celebration" mainstream dance on July 1st. Please join us and wear your red, white and blue. Darrell Kalmbach is calling, and Tami Helms is cuing. July 15th is a mainstream dance with Darrell Kalmbach calling and guest cuer Leonard Snodgrass. July 6th & 20th are Plus dance nights with Darrell Kalmbach calling and Jeanine Norden guest cueing cuing.
We are looking forward to a club picnic/swim party at the home of Dan and Terri Browning on July 30th from 1:00 - 4:00.
Tami Helms is offering to teach beginning waltz classes if we get at least 10 couples to sign up. We already have 7 couples signed up. The classes will be at the Hillsboro IOOF Hall from 2:30 to 4:00 on Sunday's beginning on September 17th. The classes will go for 10 weeks to be finished by Thanksgiving. Please let someone in our club know if you are interested in joining this class. Tami is an excellent instructor!

In May our contract with Kinton Grange was signed for 2023-2024, so all our dates for dancing and lessons are set - hooray! And we had two dances and visited the Valley Squares for their 74th anniversary dance.
In July we are DARK due to the heat. But two visitations are set up with clubs who have A/C: the River City Dancers on the 8th and the Hoedowners on the 22nd. So glad they have A/C! We also encourage our members to find square dances on their vacations, English is called around the world, and casual vacation clothes are acceptable in summer.
Gotta keep dancing!

No, this is not a broken record but yes we are again changing our dance facility. We are now dancing at the Tillamook Senior Center, 316 Stillwell Avenue. Located on the corner of 4th and Stillwell there is no on site parking and little street parking. There is, however, a huge Safeway parking lot directly across the street. Our dances are held weekly on Tuesdays from 4:00 to 6:00. Our caller/cuer is Lane Clem. It is a good idea to call before you make the trip to see if we have enough folks for a square. For up to date information see: www.wavesteppers.org. (see above link)
