President's Corner
My Swan Song
My time as President for the Oregon Federation of Square and Round Dance Clubs is nearing its end. One of the more enjoyable things I was tasked to do is to write this column in the OFN each month. The topics that I chose presented themselves based on the activity within the organization when my deadline was looming.
My intent was to keep the articles upbeat and informative. It is up to you as the reader to determine if I accomplished my goal. We all have our opinions of how things are & how we want them to be. This column was an opportunity to express mine.
So here are some more. I believe that during my time as president we as an organization have made significant progress recovering from a difficult time due to no fault of our own. Even though we have lost clubs, our overall membership is on the increase.
I believe we have a good number of people within our organization that are willing to volunteer their time to get done the things that need to be done. They are willing to set aside their differences long enough to accomplish something for the greater good.
I believe that every organization has its detractors. That was true for me as it will be for others who succeed me. I was fortunate in having a good number of supporters that offered advice and helped me stay the course and that made it easier to accomplish the goals that I set out to accomplish.
I believe that my successor is well equipped to build upon the work that I have accomplished. I have the faith that they will do good things for the organization.
When I started my term, I opened my speech by stating our purpose.
To further the common good and general welfare of the people of its communities and to bring about civic betterment and social improvements in the education, promotion and encouragement of square dancing and its related activities, without regard to race, creed, sex, age, national origin, or religion.
I believe that our purpose as stated is as relevant today as it was when written in 1957. Let’s keep doing the things we need to live up to this purpose.
Thank You all,
Sharing is caring,
Tim Keck
President

- National Dance Day

Dance organizations of all kinds from all across the country will be participating in “National Dance Day” on September 16, and the Oregon Federation of Square and Round Dance Clubs would like to thoroughly embrace this opportunity to shed a light on all things dance while promoting our clubs! Therefore, we are calling all Dancers to participate in some way with the National Dance Day on September 16, 2023. Let’s flood Oregon and Washington with dance demos and community dances to promote our favorite activity: square dancing, round dancing, line dancing and clogging! Work with your clubs and councils to come up with a creative venue to strut your moves on this “groovy” day which celebrates all kinds of dancing. If you need help coming up with new places to dance, here is a list for your consideration:
Community colleges
Private schools
Rural schools
Halftime at a football game
Beaches
Campgrounds
RV parks
Local malls
City centers
American Legion
Elks
VFW
"Flash mob" demo in malls or city centers
Chamber of Commerce Events
Restaurants
Bars
Hop & Heritage Festival (Independence, OR)
Breweries
Wineries
Pendleton Roundup (Pendleton, OR)
Casinos
Oktoberfest (Mt. Angel, Canyon City)
Craft shows
Church bazaars
Other church events
Remember to check with the venue management for permission and for their assistance. Take your lesson information with you to the dances. Contact your local newspaper or TV Station and invite their Features Editor to attend or even participate if you plan to have a time to teach. Once you have determined where you are going to dance, be sure to complete a Notification of Event Form: https://squaredance.gen.or.us/insurance/NotificationOfEvent.php. Let your council delegates know your plans so they can share your dance plans with the OFSRDC during their report at the OFSRDC September 10 meeting. And, most importantly, HAVE FUN!
History of National Dance Day: In 2010, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton started National Dance Day while working with Nigel Lythgoe, co-creator of, “So You Think You Can Dance” and the co-founder of the American Dance Movement. They determined that dance was a creative and artistic outlet that can be used to promote a healthy lifestyle by improving muscle tone, bone density, balance, flexibility, and strength. In 2020, working with the American Heart Association, the National Dance Day was moved to September in an effort to provide new dance contents for their “kids’ health initiative, the Kids’ Heart Challenge encouraging students to participate. Dancing improves mental and physical health and relieves stress while building healthier bodies.
If you have any questions or need assistance, contact Kathy Roberts, OFSRDC Publicity and Education Coordinator, kathy@4roberts.us. National Dance Day information is from: https://nationaltoday.com/national-dance-day/

- Caller Shortage
Hello Oregon Square and Round Dancers,
I’m sure that you’ve noticed the decline in the number of available callers. It reminds me of the situation back in 2003 when I returned and settled back into the Oregon square dance activity. There were several clubs in the area in need of callers. For a few years I ran weekly classes in Square Dance Calling. Some of those that were students in those classes are still calling, teaching, and maintaining clubs.
Okay, this is twenty years later. We are coming out of a pandemic that not only caused the loss of a huge number of dancers in the activity, but callers as well.
We’re at a critical point. Yes, we need new dancers worse than we have at any time in the last 50 years. Who’s going to teach them? Callers? What callers? The capable ones are already busy. Look around. How many of the callers that are servicing clubs now going to be here in another 5 years?
Folks, callers are not made in 5 years. They, with the help of very understanding clubs and dancers, in a matter of months can get to the point of maintaining a club while they continue to learn. If you talk to any of my newer callers, they’ll tell you the one thing I say more than anything else is, “Callers call.” The more they call, the more they learn, the more they learn, the more beneficial they are to the clubs and the activity.
What can we do? First, give some of the wannabes that we already have a chance to gain on mic experience. Hire them for guest dances not guest tips. It doesn’t have to be your regular dance night. It can be a special dance for a “Newbie.” If I were a newbie and had an opportunity to show everyone that I have potential, I’d do my best to put together a program that would impress the club. The key word for the club is “potential.” Don’t expect a finished project. Give them a reason to progress. I’ll never forget the first club to hire me as their caller was the Swap and Swing in The Dalles, Oregon. The club teacher (Dick Pentecost) explained that because they were so far from Portland, and could afford so little, that the new callers were their only choice. They knew they’d have to hire new callers. Me? I just wanted to call, and it was worth the 180-mile round trip twice a month to get the experience. I don’t know if I made enough to cover the gas expense, but I was a “club caller.” That was the beginning of what I am now. I think they might have seen some potential in me because I really wasn’t that good.
Currently, we have some caller wannabes in Oregon. We need more. Obviously, everyone that picks up a microphone is not going to develop into a caller, any more than everyone that starts learning to square dance is going to be able to learn all that’s necessary. But they all need to be given a chance.
What can we do? Create new programs for the wannabe callers. If you have a club night and have been hiring guest callers, consider using every other dance to give a newbie a chance to give them some incentive to improve.
It would be in each of the Oregon Federation Councils’ interest to sponsor a special dance monthly, just to give the newbies a chance to call, make mistakes, and try to correct them. If you have a well experienced caller that would be willing, ask them if they would be available to help the newbies with these dances.
Through the pandemic, Jim Hattrick and I ran weekly caller training zoom sessions for newbies. After Jim’s passing, I continued with them. Most of those attending are Oregon new callers. There is only so much that we can do online. Roger Putzler has stepped in to help. These sessions have always been free. If you, or someone you know might be interested in giving it a try, please let me know.
If you are a current newbie, or you think further training might help you as a caller, and would like to be included, let me know. I and Roger are willing to help.
If you’d like to discuss this further, please contact me and together let’s see what we can do to save our activity.

Corvallis Squares will soon start dancing again by kicking off the dance season on Sept. 9. Our fall lessons will be taught by Bruce Lowther and Judy Russell. We will hold a free introduction-to-square dance on Tuesday, Sept. 19 at 7:00 p.m.; then our lessons will be on Thursdays starting Sept. 21, from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. The location is the Corvallis Community Center (formerly the Senior Center), which has been remodeled and is such a nice facility. There is good parking on site.
We wish everyone a good wrap-up to your summers, and all the best as we launch into fall activities.

The club was dark in August due to the Polk County Fair being held in our dance hall, but our annual meeting was held on August 5, and we voted on a new club caller and club cuer. However, we can’t reveal the names until after the contracts have been signed. We also voted to move our dances to the Salem Square Dance Center after being at Polk County Fairgrounds for over two decades. A flyer will be made to let you know when the new caller will be doing lessons. This will be a big transition period and moving things from one place to another. Send some good vibes to us as we change things around.
Our new officers will have a meeting in September and visitations will be scheduled after that meeting. Look for the “wheels” to show up in your doorway.

July has come and gone with the club going dark twice for lack of dancers to make the evening worthwhile. August was off to a good start with a visitor from Arizona and a couple from Prineville. It is so nice to have visitors.
We had a meeting, and we had a request for fall lessons from the youth from Silver City Squares. They would like Cha and we took their request under advisement. We put together a schedule, gave them the time frame, and have posted it for a tentative start date on September 14. 6:30-7:00 p.m. is Slow Two-Step review, 7:00-7:40 p.m. is phase 3-4 dancing, 7:40-8:25 is Cha class, and 8:25-9:15 is phase 3-4 dancing. We really want this to work. The Cha lessons will be a new-to-them rhythm for the youth, and they are eager to learn. A flyer is located elsewhere in this issue of the OFN.
For the rest of August, we will dance various rhythms and keep up our knowledge of the steps. It seems like I learn something and forget it next time it shows up in a dance.

WOW...Can you believe it is already the middle of August? We have had so much fun dancing through the Summer months. There have been visitors from Montana, California, Washington and of course our own beloved Oregon.
Our first Friday dance in August had FIVE SQUARES on the floor for our ½ hour of Plus. And there were still four squares for the Final Plus tip at the end of the evening.
We are gearing up for our Fall lessons which begin on Wednesday, September 13 at 6:30 pm for Mainstream and 8:00 pm for Plus. Flyers are uploaded to the OFN. Mark you calendars for our Annual Corn & Cluck Dance on September 15. There will be a chicken and corn meal followed by lots of dancing, chicken races and prizes. We have three dances in the month of September. So come join us on the first, third and fifth (Plus) Fridays. See you on the dance Floor.

BnBs are having a 5th Wednesday dance at Abernathy Grange on August 30. Our caller will be Terry Halley, and our cuer will be Tami Helms. The Grange address is 15745 S Harley Ave. In Oregon City.

Our tradition is to have a back to school dance at the first dance in September. We collect school supplies to donate to needy students. This year our donated supplies will be given to the Bloom'n Boutique. This nonprofit provides school supplies, new clothing, and bedding to referred children from ages newborn through high school. It serves all of Clackamas County.

Our September 6 dance will be called by Darrell Kalmbach, and our September 20 dance will be called by KC Curtis. Both dances will be cued by Tami Helms.

BnBs will be starting lessons on Wednesday September 13. Beginner through Mainstream Level. Lessons are scheduled from 6:15-7:15 at Abernathy Grange. Angels needed. All dancers welcome.

Our regular dance night pre-rounds start at 7:30, with Mainstream from 8 until break at 9:30. Then one plus tip after break. We'd love to see you there.

We have been busy and active this summer. We had a great club picnic at the home of our caller couple Darrell and Erin Kalmbach, the first weekend in August.
Our first dance in August was our “Dancing in Paradise” dance. Our hall was beautifully decorated both upstairs in our dance room, and also downstairs, where we have our break after the dance. We had tropical fruit and snacks for refreshments during the break. Thank you, Terri, Janice, Cal, Erin, and Betsy for the beautiful tropical decorations. It was a fun dance.
We were very pleased to welcome back our dear friends Larry and Penny Crow, who now live in Arizona and were back to visit their family here. They brought their family to dance with us too.
Happy dancing,
Carol Mendenhall

We had a great time making a spectacle of ourselves at Sundae in the Park in Sellwood on August 6. Daryl Clendenin did his usual stellar job calling and entertaining an appreciative audience. We handed out a bunch of flyers and made some good connections with other community organizations. Afterwards, we amused ourselves with a delightful pool party at the home of club members Louise and Lisa.
Following up on our appearance at Sundae in the Park, we will start out the fall with our free taste of square dancing at the Sellwood Community House on September 9, starting at 6 pm. This will be in lieu of our normal Saturday social dance, so we will not be at Oak Grove in September. Please make a note!
Our fall lessons will start on September 13 at Bridgeport United Church of Christ, 621 NE 76th Ave., Portland, 97213. We will be teaching Social Square Dance (SSD) again this year. The lessons go from 7-8:30 pm. The first two lessons in the series are free.

We took a break during the week of the county fair Aug 6th to 13th. On Tuesday, Aug 15 we had several lightning strikes resulting in several wildfires. We are currently still on hold. We have been holding our new dancer sessions at the Karuk Wellness Ctr. Due to wildfires in our area, the Wellness Ctr is being used as an emergency evacuation center. We are not sure how long we will be on hold. It will definitely depend on the weather and situations surrounding the wildfires. We had a lot of interest from attendees at the fair and hope to generate some new dancers. At this time we don't have a definite starting date for new dancers, but hope to start another session in mid-September. We are looking forward to our "Patriots Day" dance which will be on September 10th. This is a Sunday afternoon. I will be calling and Elaine will be cuing. The dance will be held from 2 to 5 pm at Evergreen Elementary School. It will be Plus for the first hour, then rounds, then SSD/MS With rounds in between tips.

Hugs,
Rikki

The July TVC meeting was an in-person meeting, the first such general meeting since before the Covid restrictions prevented them. It was attended by 19 officers, delegates, and visitors. Presiding was TVC President Dale Brabham. Many of the attendees enjoyed a pre-meeting Italian dinner and then participated in discussions specific to the TVC. The budget for the upcoming year was presented, amended and approved. The TVC dances for the remainder of 2023 and 2024 were announced. The September meeting will be another in-person meeting on the 25th at the Tanasbourne Old Spaghetti Factory (subject to change).
The Council encourages all dancers to attend Anniversary dances. It is important to support our dancing community. The TriSquares will celebrate their 25th Anniversary on Friday September 22nd at the Kinton Grange, Terry Halley and KC Curtis calling with Sandra Pinion cueing. See their report below for additional details.
The next TVC event is our annual Hahn Barn Dance and picnic on September 30th. The picnic will be at 4pm by the lake followed by a mainstream dance featuring caller emcee Mark Wheeler and cuer emcee Lane Clem at 5p.m. Mark and Lane may ask for callers and cuers from the floor for a "Hoedown" style dance.
Once again all the TVC club reporters submitted OFN reports. The TVC is the only Council in the state with 100% club reporting to the OFN. This is a bit of news I do not mind repeating. Keep up the good work!

The Columbia River Dancers Are getting ready for a new fall dance season with our caller, Daryl Clendenin calling and cueing both our September 1st dance as well as our September 15th dance.
We are striving to reach out to our community to acquaint them with square dancing. We are encouraging members to talk to neighbors and may have free dance parties . We are open to suggestions as to how to reach others to this wonderful activity.
Our Sunday mainstream workshops have been great. We have seen great improvement in the dancers. We averaged over three squares each week and have noticed that the newer dancers are much more confident and are much smoother on the floor. A great shout out to all who came.
See you in a square soon.

The Eager Beavers started July with a bang at our Independence Day Dance on the 3rd. We have enjoyed dancing in the air-conditioned Aloha Grange during the hot days of summer.
We will begin the month of September with our Labor Day Dance on Monday the 4th featuring Daryl Clendenin calling and Jeanine cueing. So come join us to get some Plus dancing in before your holiday picnic!
Speaking of picnics, we are having our annual club picnic at Noble Woods Park in Hillsboro on September 20th. Since September is a month where the yellow jackets get a little mean we are dispensing with the fried chicken and potluck, opting instead with bringing our own lunch and drinks. We always have plenty of games and activities.
We dance Plus with Phase II and III Rounds every Monday from 1:00 to 3:00pm, featuring Darrell Kalmbach calling and Jeanine Norden cueing.

With summer in full swing, Hoedowners and visitors kick up their heels on July 8th with a cowboy rodeo, to the calling of Scott Zinser and cueing of Julie Stiers. Thanks go out to Donnie Laas for sharing his wonderful collection of cowboy gear to decorate the hall.
Nothing says summer like a picnic, even if it’s indoors. After dancing to Melissa James’ and Randy Lewis’ calling and cuing for us on July 22nd folks headed to the cafeteria to enjoy a table full of picnic favorites, sans ants.
September signals the start of the school year, and our class schedule for new dancers will begin September 12th, from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. Terry Halley will be the instructor, and “tuition” is $6 per class.
In Memoriam
Hoedowners and other guests gathered on July 22nd, at the Elks Lodge in Sherwood, to pay tribute to and celebrate the life of long-time member, Wayne Ditsworth, who died on June 4, 2023. Wayne and his wife of 56 years, Darlene, joined the club in 1970s when the club was known as the Hillsboro Hoedowners. Always ready with a smile, his easy manner added warmth to any square. Our deepest sympathy goes out to Darlene and family.

Oak Hills Squares have been active throughout the summer, with many dancers visiting from other clubs. We have had more than 2 squares dancing most Monday evenings, and our Caller, Mark Wheeler, continues to challenge us with a few new calls. Although the weather has been warm, our venue is air conditioned and has outside doors, making dancing comfortable in summer. Many hope to attend some of the upcoming dances at local clubs, including the TVC Hahn Barn Dance on September 30th.
The Oak Hills Squares hope to expand our membership, offering lessons for new dancers beginning Monday, September 11th at Oak Hills Recreation Center, 2085 NW 153rd, Beaverton, 97006. Mark Wheeler will teach new dancers from 6:30 to 7:30 with Angels assisting. Mainstream dancing will continue for experienced dancers from 7:30 to 8:30.
One final bit of news; we will be happy to welcome back members Alice Gilchrist and Rick Welcome when they recover from illness. The two were recently married, and we are eager to celebrate with them!

R Square D had at least five squares or more at both July dances and it’s been refreshing to dress casually and enjoy ice cream at the summer dances. We danced at the Cowlitz County Fair on July 27ht and handed out cards promoting lessons that will begin on September 6th in Kelso. We also co-hosted an Evergreen Council dance on July 30th at Kelso Senior Center, which had close to 60 people in attendance. Jim Raupp and Susan Healea called and cued that dance and it was a fun afternoon!
In September, R Square D will go back to the regular dance schedule, which is the second Friday and fourth Saturday each month (occasionally dark on a fourth Saturday). “Roaring 20’s Dance” is September 8th, with Craig Abercrombie calling and Susan Healea cueing. September 23rd will be a Neil Diamond tribute dance, also with Craig and Susan calling and cueing. Both September dances promise to have lively and familiar music.
As mentioned above, square dance lessons will start on September 6th at Kelso Senior Center. Plus lessons are 6:30 – 7:30, beginning class 7:30 – 8:30 and mainstream lessons/workshop 8:30 – 9:00.

A reminder to join us this summer when the weather is so hot for Mainstream or Plus.. we have air conditioning and love visitors!
We had a great July with a Mainstream Independence Day Celebration Dance on July 1st that was well attended. We had root beer floats after the dance. It was a fun dance and the floats topped it off.
Our club picnic was on July 30th at Dan and Terri Browning's. We had a fabulous time with about 45 guests.
Beginning waltz lessons start Sunday, September 17th, from 2:30 – 4 pm. Tami Helms and Tim Keck will be the instructors. The cost is $6 per person and no previous round dance experience is needed.
Our dances are held upstairs (an elevator is available) at the Hillsboro IOOF Hall, 267 E Main St. in downtown Hillsboro. Parking is available on the street or in the Heritage Bank parking lot across the street. The hall is air-conditioned/heated for year-round comfort.
Our September Mainstream dances are on September 2nd with Daryl Clendenin calling and Tami Helms cueing. The Theme is "Back to School". On September 16th, Darrell Kalmbach is calling and Tami Helms is cuing.
The September Plus dances are on Thursday, September 7th and September 21st. Darrell and Tami are calling and cueing both dances.
The TVC sponsored Barn Dance will be held at our members Gary and Bette Hahn's Barn on September 30th. Mark Wheeler is calling and Lane Clem is cueing. More details can be found on the TVC website.

In July we were dark at Kinton Grange, but we scheduled two visitations, to River City Dancers on the 8th and Hoedowners on the 22nd, to keep us dancing. We also encouraged our members to find dances on their vacations. Everywhere in the world square dancing is called in English.
In September our grange is back in business! Our first dance is "Luau Party" on Friday the 8th with our caller Terry Halley and cuer Sandra Pinion. (Will she still be wearing Baby Henry in his baby carrier while she cues?) And our 2nd one, Friday the 22nd is our 25th Anniversary Dance "Celebrate the Good Times!" with Terry, Sandra, and KC Curtis as our 2nd caller. Hope we can get a bunch of squares for that one! Dances start with Rounds at 7:00, then Plus at 7:15 and Mainstream from 7:30-9:30, with every 3rd tip Plus.
Also, fall lessons begin on Sundays, starting September 24th, with Two-Step at 2:30, and Mainstream at 3:30. Let the new dance-year begin!

At this writing we are planning to perform at the Tillamook County Fair. Sort of a warm up for going to the Oregon State Fair and dancing there as well. It is always hoped that we will interest someone.
We dance at the Tillamook Senior Center, 316 Stillwell Avenue. Located on the corner of 4th and Stillwell there is no on site parking and little street parking. The huge Tillamook Coliseum Theater parking lot is directly across the street. Our dances are held weekly on Tuesdays from 4:00 to 6:00. Our caller/cuer is Lane Clem. It is a good idea to call before you make the trip to see if we have enough folks for a square.
