President's Corner
Hello to Oregon from your new OFSRDC President.
I am looking forward to this year.
My goal for this year is to have all clubs, councils and experienced dancers recruit and support all of Oregon’s new dancers and Oregon’s youth dancers.
So far, the clubs that have started lessons are reporting larger class sizes than the previous few years. THIS IS A GREAT START!!!! Now comes the harder part – SUPPORTING!! For those who still have some open weeks and who are starting their lessons soon – here is hoping that you get even more students.
New dancers and youth are our future for without them our activity will eventually fade away due to lack of numbers. We need to bring them in to our lessons and clubs, help them learn, support them at lessons, new dancer dances, festivals and as recent graduates. We need to mentor them and help them to get out to visit other clubs and attend festivals-even if this means we have to take a little of our time and effort and reach out to them. This also includes welcoming back those who have been out of dancing for a while.
I challenge every experienced dancer to do their very best to bring a new student to lessons this year; to act as a mentor to a new dancer or a new family of dancers or a youth dancer; to offer to pick someone up and drive them to a lesson or a regular club dance or to a visitation. Encourage new dancers and youth to attend a festival, offer to meet up with them there and help them find their way around. If someone misses a lesson, call them and let them know that they were missed. Help fill out a square so that others can dance, don’t leave it up to someone else. Smile, welcome and talk to EVERYONE.
If you haven’t seen some of your club members for a while – make a phone call, text or email and let them know that they have been missed. Ask if they need help getting to a dance or lessons. We can all get caught up in our own individual routines and forget that we are all part of a group. Individual dancers make the clubs, the clubs make the councils, the councils make the OFSRDC, the states make the United Square Dancers of America which is part of the WORLD OF SQUARE DANCING which INCLUDES THE ROUND DANCERS, THE CLOGGERS, THE LINE DANCERS. We all need each other. It all starts with just one dancer so we don’t want to lose the one dancer.
Please don’t think that someone else will do this. We don’t want to get into the “Everyone could do this, everyone thought someone would do this but nobody did this” situation. It is much better for several people to call or text or email than for NOBODY to reach out.
Please join me in supporting our new dancers and experienced dancers both young and old, all dancers are our future and our lifeblood for without them our favorite activity will eventually fade away.
Karyn Buchheit

We also have amazing visitation chairs that are in your area that have ribbons. And of course you can always mail your registration in. So there are lots of opportunities to get your ribbons. The other part is your hotel. Now is the best time to call and get your reservation. There are 5 hotels offering the "square dancer" discount. They can be found on the website. Are you excited? We can't wait to see you in a square.
The Trail's End dance will feature Dave Zachry of the Ghost Riders, plus Rikki Lobato. See flyer to the right.

- Classes will be Starting
Daryl Clendenin 2023
This is the time of year that most clubs start their beginner lessons in the hope of replacing dancers lost to normal attrition, I want to relate a few of my opinions about the new dancers from their first night in class to their entry into club dancing..
I want to start with a big one, “Fear of the unfamiliar.” Let’s face it, to the new dancer, everything and everyone is probably unfamiliar. Typically, the new people are walking into a place they have never been. Everything, from where can I hang my coat, to where can I sit, is going to be new.
Have someone with a friendly smile welcome them as they come into the hall and if they are not already accompanied by a club member introduce them to one. Let’s see, did I say one? Yes that “one” can introduce them to their wife or husband later. Hopefully that other “one” will be busy doing the same for another new dancer or new couple. This is the first step in getting them past the fear of not being accepted by a bunch of strangers. Remember, strangers are just friends you haven’t met …… yet. Real friendships develop over time, but all friendships begin the same way. Welcome them into your home club.
I said, “getting them past the fear of not being accepted.” For many, that is their greatest fear. Remember, as for the new dancer, all of you that already know how to dance, are experts. Do everything you can to make them feel a part of the whole group as soon as possible.
Assure them that we all started the same way, and the teacher is going to have them dancing in no time. Let them know that some of the most fun they’ll have in square dancing is right now, making new friends and dancing with them. There are no books you must study, there are no report cards, there are no tests or final exams and no failing grades. It’s just meeting and dancing with friends. Just for fun.
If you see any of the new dancers staying apart from the group, don’t just invite them, take the group to them. Don’t expect them to come to you.
Your caller can teach them to dance but only you can make members of them. Don’t treat them like beginners. Treat them like dancers from the beginning, and hopefully they’ll want to come back and be a part of our extended family.
I have attached a SQUARE ANGEL document that might help the classes run smoothly.
SQUARE ANGELS GUIDELINES
Square angels are an important part of every class. The angels are the new dancers first exposure to what square dancing is all about, friends and group cooperation. Each tip of dancing is a "team effort." we all rely on each other to come to a successful end of the dance tip. The key attitude should always be 'Friends first, dance second."
Daryl can make them dancers. Only you can make them a part of the group.
The following is a bit of information on how you can help make our class successful.
BE EARLY: Be there on time and introduce yourself to the new people.
BE OBSERVANT: Make sure that every student is in a square for each tip. If someone has to sit out, make sure it’s not a student. Square up with different folks for each tip.
DO NOT TALK IN THE SQUARE when the caller is giving instructions. Learning to listen to the caller's commands requires concentration. No person can listen to two people at one time. All should be listening to the same caller. Who knows? You may learn something as well. If you think the caller has missed something, let him know during the break.
DANCING STYLES: Stick to the proper styling during the class. The dancer shortcuts and individual styling adopted by some dancers can be confusing to the students. Leave the Arm around Dosados and shortcuts in Grand Squares for the club dance. They don’t belong in the class.
ANGELS ARE HELPERS, NOT PUSHERS: Students must learn to react to each command. At this stage getting there is not as important as, knowing how to get there. Pushing, pulling and putting the dancers in the right spot is not helpful. Keep in mind, the caller needs to see the mistakes in order to correct them.
LET THE CALLER KNOW (during a break) if a dancer has not grasped the concept of a call. The caller can review the call during the next tip. It is not a good idea to "teach" a call during a break. The student needs the time to relax and clear the mind. Let the caller do the teaching. What if you teach it wrong?
FRUSTRATION IS OUR BIGGEST ENEMY: Let the students know that
mistakes are a part of the dance. No one, the caller included, gets through everything without making the occasional mistake. No one keeps score. Square dancing can be frightening experience. Keep that in mind at all times with the new students even after they "graduate". They might feel responsible for every mistake.
- New Dancer Jamborees
PLEASE clubs when advertising your New Dancer Jamborees list what level the dance will be. CALLERLAB 1-48 or ? or SSD (1-?).
I can't bring or send my classes or even other classes/dancers to your Jamboree unless if we do not know what level will be called. We want them to succeed and have a great time.
Thank you,
Craig Abercrombie

Free Memorial Dance / Potluck in memory of Don Benson
October 15th 7:30 - 9:30 PM
Maplewood Grange
25480 S. Highway 99E
Aurora, OR 97002
In memory of Don Benson we are having a dance / potluck put on by callers from the floor. Considering Don was a Challenge caller, the dance will be multiple levels depending on available dancers.
Don helped our local teens compete at PNTSDF 9 years and this last year the teens won first in 11 of the 12 categories they competed in.
If you knew Don please come show some love to Don's daughter Jessica and share Don's love of square dancing.

Cascade Callers & Cuers Assoc
One of our CCCA members is a new dad. Mike Kious and Camille's baby was born September 1, one day after Christina's birthday August 31. Aidan Alan Kious weighed in at 9.1 pounds! We can't wait to meet Aidan but have seen the cutest pictures of him with his mom and dad! Welcome Aidan!
Our next Fifth Saturday dance is September 30. We canceled our July 29th dance because the clubs in Roseburg had a barn roof benefit. We heard that this benefit day was a huge success, and we thank our dancers for attending. Over $20,000 was raised to add to the money raised in June at the Buckeroo Round Up. It looks like they’ll be getting a new roof.
Our dances start with pre-rounds at 7:00 and mainstream from 7:30 - 9:30. The hall is air conditioned.
Happy calling, cueing and dancing!
Christina Corelli - Secretary
We had one fun dance in August and one very successful dance now in September on the 10th. One of the August dances had to be canceled because we didn't have enough dancers signed up to be assured we would have a square. On Sept. 10th we fell just short of two squares, but our coordinator Fred Beisse kept the tips short so no one had to sit out for too long. Moreover we dance with cards so he kept us rotating so we would dance with everyone at one point or another. It was disappointing not to have two squares going but just being one shy told us that we are building back up. Of course November is coming and our sun birds will be taking off for Arizona and other southerly climes.
You can check for our tentative schedule online at cas-sd.yolasite.com. This is a tentative schedule so if you are not on Fred's email list for last minute notifications, please give Fred ( 458-221-3564 ) a call to check on whether we are dancing on any given Sunday.
One dance I am confident will be well-attended will be held on Nov. 12 with Kris Jensen from Albuquerque, NM calling. Kris generally comes our way at least once a year and as our fellow club member Kurt is her brother, she always stops by to visit and will call for both CAS and Spin Cycle Squares while she is here. She is a very personable caller and always does a fine job of calling advanced for us. We are so lucky to have her ,so please mark your calendars and let us know you're coming! The more the merrier.

We are back to dancing twice a month on the third and fourth Fridays at the Emerald Square Dance Center in Springfield from 7:30 to 10:00PM. We do 15 minutes of pre-rounds to start followed by 15 minutes of plus and then mainstream with every third tip plus thereafter.
We often have a theme so if you are interested in joining in on the theme please check our website at singletrees.blogspot.com to see what the dance theme is. In August we had a watermelon and cornfields dance on the second Friday and then our Hawaiian Nights dance on the 4th Friday. Bruce Lowther called the first dance and Mark Wheeler the last. Both were fun dances, and well attended with 2 to 3 squares on the floor. We were greatly surprised by the number of Hawaiian shirts and muu-muus that showed up. A group photo was taken which can be seen in the photo section. Looks like many dancers have taken cruises or vacations in Hawaii. Our president Joy Pitts and her sister Melba Walker love give-a-ways so quite a few watermelons were give away on Aug. 10 and pineapples on the 24th.
As of this writing we have not had our 3rd Friday dance Sept. 15 which is to be a Sock Hop with Craig Abercrombie calling and cueing. This is always a fun dance. Thank goodness we have air conditioning as it is supposed to be in the 90's by Friday. Jeans and felt poodle skirts will be a mite heavy but the A/C should help. Mark Wheeler and Jackie Gale will call and cue for the Ducks versus Beavers dance Sept. 22.
In October we will have our regular third (Chili Contest with Bruce Lowther and Judy Russell) and fourth (Ian Craig and Jackie Gale) dances and of course the 4th Friday will be our Halloween dance with prizes awarded for best costumes so get with it and come up with a great costume idea. You'll be hard pressed to beat our president Joy Pitts who always has something super zany every year.
See you in a square,
Gaynor Hintz

We dance from 4 - 6 on Sundays at the Emerald Dance Center in Springfield. Everyone is welcome. All our dances are casual. Tim calls all levels and helps us if there are any figures giving us fits.
One of our members, Cheryl Hagey, had successful neck surgery and is without pain now. Yippee! She's not able to dance just yet nor drive, but we hope that will happen very soon.
We invite you to join us any Sunday. It might be wise to call David Lajoie at 541-520-7311 to make sure we are dancing. We shouldn't have any dark Sundays, but one never knows. We dance in Hall A at the Emerald Dance Center, 2095 Yolanda in Springfield. The floor is cushioned, and we have heat in the winter and air conditioning in the summer.
Kris Jensen will be calling for us on November 12, 2023. Kris is a national caller from Albuquerque. Kris is Kurt Jensen's sister. This is going to be one special dance!

We are back to our usual schedule of the second and third Saturdays, but September 16 was dark.. We have Plus from 7:00 - 7:30 and then Mainstream with rounds.
Mike and Camille's baby boy was born September 1 weighing in at 9.1 pounds. Wow, 9.1 pounds and born on 9/1. That baby knew what he was doing! Congratulations Mike and Camille and welcome Aidan Alan Kious! We can't wait to meet you. We have seen the most adorable photos of you and your parents!
Carol Reetz's memorial service was held late August. Many people from Carol's life attended. Carol was active in many things and made a difference. The service was beautiful and meaningful. Carol is sorely missed, and we continue to support and love her family. Larry and Carol met at an Emerald Teens dance.
We are having another free community dance September 23 at 7:00. Dave Cooper will be calling and maybe cueing too. He's pretty versatile! We hope this dance will reap many new dancers for the fall classes which start ion October 3 and 10 with Roger Putzler teaching. The last free community dance had over 7 squares and lots of people who had never square danced. We had enough angels to show everyone a great time. Please join us on September 23 for the free community dance.
September 9 was a memorable dance as we hosted the state meeting that weekend. It was awesome seeing so many faces we don't usually get to see until Mid-Winter. Tim Roberts and Kathy and many delegates and state officers were there. Mark Wheeler called that dance as Mike was home being a new father. Thanks Mark!
Our annual Whirl-A-Ways picnic was canceled due to the extreme heat. We want to thank Todd and Kathy Jensen for being willing to take this on and are sorry it didn't happen. Thank you both for your sound thinking and keeping us all safe.

The club held their first dance of the new season at the Salem Square Dance Center after their relocation from Polk County Fairgrounds. We had six squares in attendance with three dancing regularly. Randy Dibble was the guest caller and Stephanie (John) Lozano started her season as the new cuer for the club. The Welcome dance was held on September 9th. Plus a visitation from R Square D was there to help us welcome Daryl Clendenin as our new caller. He is also their caller.
The “big move” from Polk County to the Salem Square Dance Center was accomplished by a crew of volunteer members who gathered and had everything out in about an hour. Then the caravan to the Center to find room for everything and stash where there was room until some spaces were made. Things are still in a state of “where did we put it?”
Since Daryl is not available to teach lessons, the club has initiated a contract with Bruce Lowther to teach mainstream for the fall session. The club will co-sponsor with Willamette Squares with income and expenses being shared equally. Lessons will be
held at the Salem Square Dance Center starting on September 17th at 6 pm.

Lebanon Square Circlers have been highly active over the summer with lots of activities, including garden parties, potlucks, a campout, and even square dancing! Although we are officially “dark” for the summer, we have been helping host free square dances for seniors at the Lebanon Senior Center on Tuesday afternoons. Our regular dances started up September 16, and our Mainstream and Two-Step lessons started on September 17. Additionally, Lebanon and Corvallis Squares are hosting Advanced (A1) lessons on Saturdays starting the first week of November. Square dancing is alive and well in Lebanon!
Please note that all Lebanon events will be held at the Senior Center, 80 Tangent Street (NOT the IOOF Hall) going forward, unless otherwise noted.

The club was dark for two weeks during August due to a lack of personnel to dance and pay the bills. We did dance on August 31 to celebrate Randy Lewis’s birthday with cake and cards. Only five dancers but we made the best of it anyway.
We scheduled the beginning of our season on September 14 with Slow Two-Step review at 6:30 p.m., followed by Phase 3-4 dancing from 7-7:40 p.m. Then another class for Cha from 740-8:25 p.m. and another session of Phase 3-4 dancing until 9:15 p.m. We are looking forward to some dancers from Silver City Squares to attend the Cha class to add another rhythm to their abilities. Should make for some good fun with more dancers in the hall. Stay tuned for next month’s report to see how the first few lessons went.
We are scheduled to host the New Year’s Eve dance, so that is the next important thing in our schedule to work on.

It is officially FALL!! Yay! September brought us three dances, including our Annual Corn and Cluck, a 5th Friday Plus Dance, and we graduated seven students with a Masters in Square Dancing from our Plus Class on September 6.
Our Fall Mainstream lessons began on September 13, followed by a new Plus class. We are looking forward to introducing square dancing to many more people.
Our October 6 dance will be a Hawaiian Beach theme to keep the good summer vibes going. There are several of us planning to attend the Seaside Sashay at the end of October. Last year we had about thirty of our club members attend.
Salem Swingin' Stars extend a warm and friendly welcome to the Independence Wagon Wheelers as they join the Salem Square Dance Center family. See you on the dance floor.

We had a beach trip with our club with 17 in attendance. We started with the bus taking us to dance on a covered bridge, then off to get the bus’s gas tank filled and we danced at the gas station. Then we headed to Newport and lunch at Arctic Circle. We were at Agate Beach and did squares, rounds, and lines in both the dunes and the surf. Cooked hot dogs on a portable grill at the bus in the parking lot, then headed home. Lots of fun for everyone who attended.
Lessons started for us in September, both mainstream and 2-step. Ian Craig will be teaching the squares and Mark McDonald the rounds. Mark asked Julia and Petrina to be his assistants.
Silver City participated in the youth dance at the state fair. There were about 45 who showed up that day (including youth dancers. Transportation, and other non-dancing family members). There were three squares up for most of our assigned time.

Hope you had a wonderful summer!
Chaps and Petticoats have returned to square dancing after being dark for the summer. We opened our season on Friday, September 15th with Caller Darrell Kalmbach and Cuer Connie Clark. Yeah!! Sure felt good to be dancing at the Maplewood Grange again.
Speaking of the Grange, on October 28 from 3:00-6:30 PM, Maplewood Grange will co-host a Harvest Festival Fundraiser (donations at the door). Proceeds benefit a local school’s lunch program. Bring the kiddos and enjoy pasta dinner and activities for the whole family, such as costume contest, face painting, other games, prizes, raffle, and pumpkin decorating.
A handful of Chaps and Petticoats enjoyed the Port Orford Labor Day “weekend of dancing” hosted by the Beachcombers. Besides the excellent BBQ and potlucks, there was dancing on the beach Saturday, Pancake Breakfast and spud-gun shoot Sunday. Then, Monday morning we were sent home with homemade cinnamon rolls. The smiles present were infectious; thank you Phil Ramey, Darrell Kalmbach, and Terry Halley callers, and Dave Cooper and Kathy Houson, cuers. Our prayers were with KC Curtis (& Linda) who was scheduled for Friday but could not be there due to KC’s illness.
Chaps and Petticoats Mainstream lesson nights began Sept.10 and will continue, 5-7 PM, at Maplewood Grange each Sunday thereafter through the end of the year. You can pay as you go, $5/night, or inquire about upfront payment discounts.
October 6th features our Pirate Dance with “Ahoy-matey’ Caller, Scott Zinser and Wench Cuer, Julie Stiers. Our dancers will choose the costume prize winners. Our third Friday, October 20, will have Terry Halley and Sandra Pinion entertaining us as Caller and Cuer. Please join us.

You may get this in time to come out to our 5th Saturday all Plus dance on September 30th with Scott Zinser and Stephanie Lozano.
October is a busy month at the Barn! We start out the dance schedule with an anniversary dance on October 7, with Craig Abercrombie. Wear your club outfits, bring a pie to share, and if you have extra garden veggies, bring them to share. The 4th Saturday dance will be called by Scott Zinser and cued by Julie Stiers.
There will also be a special birthday dance on October 22 from 2 to 5 pm for our beloved president, Robert Lumsden, and for our friend Melissa James. They are turning 70 only a few days apart this month. A chance to dance for free! Scott Zinser will be calling and Tami Helms will be cueing. And if you know Robert, there will be plenty of cake and goodies!
Our Annual Pancake, Ham and Egg Breakfast will be on Sunday, October 15 this year, starting at 8:00 am, ending at 1:00 pm. There will also be crafted items for sale and raffles. Don't miss this all-you-can-eat chance; ask any Cut-Up for tickets.
If you have been wanting to learn Two Step round dancing, you can sign up at the Barn. Lessons are scheduled to start on October 1 from 6 to 7:30 pm. Julie Stiers will be teaching. We still have line dancing lessons every Wednesday and Thursday afternoon with Lynn.
Looking back, it was fun dancing on the outdoor floor. Kudos to the guys in our club who put a nice new coat of paint on it. Looking ahead, we will be holding our first Craft Show fundraiser on November 11. Contact Bev De La Bruere if you are a crafter and interested in selling your products. All of you should plan to come and do some Christmas shopping!

The Ramblers held a community dance featuring a free taste of square dancing at the Sellwood Community House on September 9. Ian Craig called the dance for us, putting our first-timers through the paces and generating lots of laughter. We were excited to get contact information from almost 40 potential new dancers!
Our fall lessons started on September 13, and continue through December. We dance every Wednesday at Bridgeport United Church of Christ, 621 NE 76th Ave., Portland, 97213. We will be teaching Social Square Dance (SSD) again this year. The lessons are from 7-8:30 pm. The first two lessons in the series are free.
We look forward to our monthly social dance on October 14. Terry Halley will be calling. Our theme will be Halloween Costume Party! We alternate Social Square Dance and Plus tips from 7 to 9:30 at the Oak Grove Community Center, 14496 SE Cedar Ave., Milwaukie.

We are so happy to be back and dancing. New classes started on Tue 9/12 with about 17 new dancers. We are hopeful for more of the same next week!! We look forward to welcoming the dancers into this fun activity.
Those who came to our "Mexican Hat Dance" on 9/13 were treated to a fun nite with guest caller Scott Pearce from Folsom, CA and cuer Rikki Lobato. I wish more would have attended, BUT everyone who did come had a great time and we certainly appreciate those who attended. We had dancers from Klamath Falls, Medford, Roseburg, Yreka and of course Grants Pass. We will not have a dance on 9/16 as some of us are attending Scot Byar's Memorial Dance. Our caller and wife were attending, but due to some family circumstances, they are now unable to attend. We will still have a nice representation from our area to honor a great caller and friend. I(Rikki) am very honored to be part of the celebration as one of the cuers for the event.
Our next dance is a Community Dance on Oct 7th with J Domis. There will be no rounds that evening, but J always does a great job and he spreads the word to his group and we usually get 60-80 dancers for the evening. Those who aren't attending the Community Dance will be in Roseburg for the Country Fever Weekend with Jim Steele & Mark McDonald. We will be dark for our 10/21 dance to support The Potato Festival in Klamath Falls.
As a reminder, our birthday dance on Dec 16th will feature the wonderful Buddy Weaver. We hope you can join us. Also, 2024 Boatnik is being planned and we have a wonderful caller/cuer couple joining us - David & Dawn Mee. Please preregister and plan to attend.
The weekend of 9/22-24 dancers from our club have a wonderful opportunity to dance to some great callers/cuers. The Rogue Valley Rendezvous is happening in Medford with Don & Marie Wood, Jay Henderson and Rikki Lobato. Come and join in the fun!
We hope to see you on the dance floor soon.

The Star Promenaders classes began on Monday, September 11 with a new SSD class and on Thursday, September 14, with a new “Mainstream to Plus” class. Dancers must have the basic mainstream moves to advance to plus. The first “Square Dance 101” class had 15
new students. There were 4 squares dancing all evening and a few extra Angels. Everyone had a great time. There were lots of smiles and laughter!
In August, the Stars laid down new flooring in the Men’s and Ladies' rooms and in the hall between. It is beautiful. The additional air conditioning unit is working great. Even when the temperature was bouncing around 100, it stayed pleasant in the hall.
On Wednesday, September 20, Wayne Weaver will begin a new Advanced class for those who have danced the level of Plus for at least one year or more.
On October 14, the Family and Friends of Gary Gent will gather to “Yellow Rock” and “Remember”. Please come and share your thoughts with the Stars and Gary’s Family.

The August TVC meeting presided by TVC President Dale Brabham was held via Zoom with 20 attendees. There is a divide between Delegates and Officers who want in-person meetings and those who want Zoom meetings. The current solution is to compromise and have six Zoom meetings and five in-person meetings this year. Our next meeting will be in-person on Monday, September 25 at 7 p.m. at the Aloha Grange, 3425 S.W. 185th Avenue, Aloha. Vice President Sally Duyck reported that the Dancing Under The Stars is being worked on as a TVC event for summer 2024.
The Council encourages all dancers to attend Anniversary dances. It is important to support our dancing community. The Sunset Promenaders will celebrate their 38th anniversary on Saturday October 7th at the IOOF Hall in Hillsboro, Darrell Kalmbach calling and Tami Helms cueing. Then on October 21st at the Winona Grange in Tualatin, the Mix & Mingle will celebrate their 39th anniversary with Randy Dibble and a guest cuer. See their reports below for additional details.
Since the OFN is published about the 20th of the month, you still have time to plan on attending the September 30th annual Hahn Barn Dance and picnic at the Hahn Farm, 37280 NW Hahn Rd, Banks, OR. See OFN September flyer under Special Dances for details.
Once again all the TVC club reporters submitted OFN reports, however, we were joined by the Rogue Sis Q Council, also with 100% reporting to the OFN! Kudos to the TVC reporters!

Have you ever had a big bite of ice cream and had a brain freeze? This is what I am having a case of right now. What to say about October dancing with the CRDs? We had a great summer with mainstream workshops on Sunday evening with Daryl Clendenin working us through all the mainstream calls. Three and four squares would be there except when it was just too hot.
Daryl will be calling our first dance in October on the 6th and Mark Wheeler will call on the 20th. Mark stepped forward when Jim was ill and we are very appreciative of his filling in.
While it is happening in September, I will report in the November Newsletter on the results of our “Free Dance Nights” program that we are doing in an attempt to show people that the modern square dance is nothing like you learned in elementary school. How many times have we heard that?
Hope to see you in a square.

August zipped right by, and September was right there. We all know what that means, back to school and cooler weather. A recent Sunday Donnie and I went to the local theater, armed ourselves with popcorn and soda then took a trip back on memory lane. We went to see the 50th anniversary of American Graffiti. It happens on the last night of summer. It features great music, great cars, a beautiful drive-in with roller skating carhops and Wolfman Jack. Could you hear Wolfman Jack when you were growing up? His broadcasts did not reach into northern Montana but every summer we visited relatives in southern Idaho which meant sitting in a car at night, on a hill and fiddling with the radio until you heard his voice. It’s the perfect homage to the end of summer. Hope you had a chance to see it on the big screen or on your TV as a rental.
Our Root Beer float dance was on August 12th and featured Ian Craig calling and Randy smoothly cueing. We also featured all those root beer floats we served. It was so refreshing in our air-conditioned hall. The dancers had a chance to cool down.
We were dark on August 26th. Vacation fever hit our membership and we decided to let everyone go, go, go.
What’s happening in October you ask? October 14th is our famous, infamous Pizza Dance. Don’t miss it! What about October 28th your ask? We’re going dark to attend the Seaside Sashay.

Oak Hills Squares have been enjoying summer dancing with many dancers from other clubs. We welcome all, as we've had lots of fun making new friends and learning from them.
Our club was dark on August 14th due to extreme heat. As of this writing we are not planning to dance on Labor Day, Monday, September 4th but have been active otherwise.
The schedule is to start lessons for beginners on Monday, September 11th at 6:30 PM. Lessons are to be from 6:30 to 7:30, then mainstream dancing from 7:30 to 8:30.

R Square D collected school supplies at the “Back to School” dance on August 9th and donated them to a local elementary school. August 23rd was our “Summer’s Last Hurrah” dance and we had over five squares in attendance.
Our August club meeting was at Pat Faires’ summer house on Mayfield Lake. It was a fun afternoon of food (BBQ/potluck), boat rides and fellowship with other club members. R Square D had a booth at Longview’s Squirrel Fest on August 19th and handed out cards and flyers promoting our September lessons.
October 13th and 14th is Fall Festival at Kelso Senior Center. Callers are Craig Abercrombie and Adam Christman and our Cuer is Susan Healea. Friday night dance is from 7:30 to 10:00. Saturday’s schedule includes an afternoon round dance (1:00-2:30), plus dancing (2:30-4:00), River City Riders at 7:15 and an evening dance from 7:30 to 10:00. This promises to be a fun weekend!

On Friday August 4th, we made a visitation to Valley Squares. On August 20th, a few members did a demo dance at the Homestead Club house. We hope to interest some new dancers to join our beginning square dance classes coming up in January. We had a super fun Hawaiian Luau dance on August 5th with 7 squares and even a few times 8 squares! Many THANKS to Richard Cason who is very faithful about taking club pictures and does an AWESOME job!
The Sunset Promenaders plus dances will be held on October 5th and 19th with Darrell Kalmbach calling and Tami Helms cuing. October 7th is our anniversary mainstream dance celebrating 38 years! There will be a lasagna dinner served at 6 pm; pre-rounds from 7-7:30 pm with mainstream and rounds from 7:30-9:30. Darrell Kalmbach is calling, and Tami Helms is cuing. We sure hope you can join us for this special evening! October 21st is a mainstream dance with Darrell and Tami.
October 27-28 is the Seaside Sashay Square dance festival at the Seaside Convention center. The festival is co-hosted by Sunset Promenaders and Hayshakers. As of this writing we have 90 dancers signed up. This is a really fun event! We hope to see many of you there!
Every Sunday in October from 2:30-4:00 waltz classes continue with Tami Helms and Tim Keck teaching at the Hillsboro IOOF Hall.
Tom Sminia has resigned as a TVC delegate and July Schnase has taken his place. Janice Sminia will continue to also represent us.

On August 5th we had a terrific visitation to the Sunset Promenaders, with 17 of our members - At one point there were 8 squares! On the 13th we held our annual potluck picnic at Snyder Park in Sherwood, and 22 of our members made it out there in the 100 degree heat! (I couldn't handle it personally.) There was a short meeting to discuss plans for how to get new members, and Charles McAuley again played the acoustic guitar afterwards, which is quite lovely in the park in the summertime. And on August 19th we made a visitation to Valley Squares with 12 members. We sure are thankful for granges with A/C, since we go dark in the summer ourselves.
In October our lessons continue on Sunday afternoons, with Two-Step at 2:00 and Mainstream at 3:30, at the Kinton Grange -- except on the 15th and 22nd we will relocate to a different place, since the Grange isn't available. Please check with our club for the other location, because as I write this it hasn't been announced yet.
Another change is that our first dance in October is moved up one week to Friday, October 6th (because of a Grange conflict), and it will be the "Autumn Apple Fest". Our second dance is on Friday, October 27th, "Come As You Aren't!" and Halloween costumes are welcome! Both dances will be with our caller, Terry Halley, and our cuer, Sandra Pinion.
And on October 20th we are following our caller and cuer to visit the Chaps and Petticoats in Aurora. A busy month!

On August 10th the Wavesteppers performed on stage at the Tillamook County Fair. In addition to the dance demo, several of us volunteered to work assisting fair visitors. Part of this was parking cars in the sun. Of course this was coastal sun, not your valley sun so it was mostly comfortable. We always hope someone at the fair will be interested in our demonstration dance enough to visit us or perhaps take lessons.
Our dance venue is the Tillamook Senior Center, 316 Stillwell Avenue. Located on the corner of 4th and Stillwell there is no on site parking and little street parking. The huge Tillamook Coliseum Theater parking lot is directly across the street. Our dances are held weekly on Tuesdays from 4:00 to 6:00. Our caller/cuer is Lane Clem. It is a good idea to call before you make the trip to see if we have enough folks for a square.
