November 2023

A publication of the Oregon Federation of Square and Round Dance Clubs

Printed 20 November 2023
President's Corner

Welcome to fall, the start of the Holiday Season and the start of the New Dancer Dances!

As the new dancer dances start this month, please encourage your club’s new dancers to go out and try these. This is a chance for them to meet other new dancers, see that there are other students out there that are at the same level of experience they are at and to start to make new friends at other clubs. Please remember – the square dance world does not end at the door to your own hall. Offer to meet your new dancers at the new dancer dance, offer to pick them up if you have room in your vehicle, offer to caravan with them to help them find their way.

Do you remember when you were a new dancer? Do you remember how scary it could be to go to another club? Do you remember not finding angels from your group at a new dancer dance you tried to go to – there was no one you knew to ask questions of. Take care of your new dancers!!! Encourage them, guide them, answer their questions.

Every club with students – please before the new dances start, sit your students down and talk to the entire group. Go over what to expect at a dance, what you should wear, how to check in at the door, explain what split the pot (50/50) is, explain how announcements/breaks work (and the variations), give approximate length of time for a dance, explain that they may see round dances between square tips (and that they need to respect the cuer and round dancers who need to be able to hear over conversations and need to be able to dance) and anything else you can think of.

Remind the angels that they are needed at the new dancer dances and that have a duty to your club’s students to go and be a positive presence. The students/new dancers are watching the angels and trying to figure out the proper etiquette – please model the proper attitude and etiquette.

So, as we go out to lessons and our new dancer dances let us make sure that we Square Up With Everyone -- not just a few friends. Seek out the weaker students/dancers and ask them to dance with you. Make sure that students are not sitting out because angels are dancing. Make sure that we as angels and experienced dancers are having fun and being encouraging – this will help make lessons and dances fun for our newer students and dancers.

Karyn Buchheit

Editor's Note

I'm hearing positive reports from lessons around the state. Silver City squares in Silverton is reporting 11 squares on the floor for lessons. That's good news!

Cascade Callers & Cuers Assoc
We had our meeting and dance the end of September.  It was a small dance, but a heck of a lot of fun for everyone.  Our next scheduled dance is supposed to be December 30, but with New Year's Eve the following night we are canceling the CCCA's Fifth Saturday dance.  Therefore, the next scheduled dances are March 30, 2024, June 29, 2024, August 31, 2024 which is also Christina Corelli's birthday!  Our fall of 2024 Fifth Saturday dance is November 30, 2024.

Pat and Cherie Cox come all the way from the south coast to set up and participate.  Thank you two so much!

Christina Corelli

Secretary and Cuer / CCCA

Cast A Shadow - Link
We had two dances in September and have already had our first dance in October on the first Sunday rather than the second one due to the Columbus Day holiday weekend. We had our usual square plus in attendance. Charlotte Jeskey called the second dance in September for us in a debut performance calling advanced. We felt she did quite well for a first appearance, and she is scheduled to call again at our only dance in December on the 10th. She has been teaching advanced off and on but doesn’t get a chance to just call at dances. It is good for everyone to dance to a live caller and good for her to g et more “mic” time.

We will have one more dance in October on the 22nd, two dances in November and one as I said in December. We are looking forward to the opportunity to dance to a live calle on Nov. 12. This time it will be national caller Kris Jensen from Albuquerque. She is great at assessing the floor and calling at a good pace.

If you are in the area, please come join us at the Emerald Dance Center on 20th and Yolanda in Springfield, OR. We dance from 1:30 TO 3:30 in Hall B (behind the building), have wooden floors and plenty of parking. We just found out that RV parking is permitted overnight with permission from someone in the club where you intend to dance. Just give Fred Beisse a call at 458-221-3564. Also please be sure we will be dancing on any given Sunday afternoon by checking with him. We try to dance the 2nd and 4th Sundays but cannot always do so. Fred always does a count ahead of time and will cancel if a square is not expected. We are down to so few dancers nowadays.

When we don’t have a live caller which is most of the time, we dance to recordings by Darrell Lipscomb, Bronc Wise and other national callers who are willing to give permission to use their material.

For more information check out our website at cas-sd.yolasite.com.

Please come join us,

We have two dances a month now on the 3rd and 4th Fridays at the Emerald Square Dance Center on Yolanda and 20th in Springfield OR just off I-105. We dance in Hall A at the front of the building with newly refinished wooden floors and plenty of parking. We just found out that RV parking is permissible when coming to dance at the center for one night only or perhaps more if there is a special weekend of dancing on offer. Please reach out to the club president Joy Pitts at 541-801-55777to be given permission and find out what the ground rules are. Our center sits in a residential neighborhood so rowdy parties are not on order.

Our Sock Hop in September was a big success with many dancers in 50’s outfits as always. We thank everyone who came to dance with us, especially those who came from out of town. There is a photo posted in the photo section of the newsletter, and I see that Craig Abercrombie who called and cued that dance for us posted it on Facebook. Perhaps those who missed this year will come join us next year.

Our Oct. 20 dance (third Friday) will feature a chili contest with Bruce Lowther calling and his wife Judy cueing. On Cot. 27 (4th Friday) we will have our annual Halloween dance with Ian Craig calling and Jackie Gale cueing. This is always one of the highlights of the fall season, and we look forward every year to seeing what zany costume our president Joy Pitts will come up with as well as seeing what our members and guests will wear. There is always a great variety.

We send out reminder notices every week before our dances so if you wish to be added to the email list to receive them, please contact Pam Murray at Red_cedar4@msn.com. For more information about our dances or to see photos taken at our dances, please go to singletrees.blogspot.com.

Keep on dancing,

Come join us and have a blast!  We dance at the Emerald Dance Center at 2095 Yolanda, Springfield, OR.

Dave Cooper did our free community dance in September as Mike is doing the new dad thing.  We can't wait to meet Aidan Kious, Camille's and Mike's new baby boy.  Dave did a great job and had seven squares dancing the entire time.  Lessons are going on now on Tuesdays from 7 - 8:30 with Roger Putzler.  We have a lot of young men showing up which is great!  We thank Dave, Mike and Roger for their time and effort in making our activity known and a lot of fun!

The annual Fall Festival was held on September 30 at the Salem Square Dance Center with two people short of eight squares paid attendance. The floor danced four squares most of the night. Silver City Squares was the host club and did a great job. Leonard Snodgrass was the caller MC and Julia Buchheit stepped in because the scheduled cuer MC was stuck in a traffic backup in the Santiam Canyon due to a wreck. He was several cars behind the wreck. Other talent on stage was Bruce Lowther, Judy Russell, Anthony Egan, and Katy Marteny. There was an abundance of food and lots of friends getting reacquainted from the summertime.

The move to the Square Dance Center is completed and we are still trying to figure out where some things are. The first dance in October was guest called by Roger Putzler, a former club caller. The second dance in October featured our new club caller, Daryl Clendenin, back on the stage.

We have a board meeting in November and will see how things come along. Hopefully, we will get some planning done for future events.

Eight members went to McMinnville for a club visitation on the third Saturday in September. The next scheduled visitation is set for November 25.

Lebanon Square Circlers are happy to report that we have over 20 students for our Mainstream Square Dance class.  Additionally, our Two-Step class is off to a great start.  In conjunction with Corvallis Squares, we plan to start A1 classes in November.

We have several themed dances coming up, including our first ever Circus Dance, and a Wild, Wild West Dance.  (We now have a Club Clown, hence the Circus Dance.)

We are very pleased with our new, permanent location at the Lebanon Senior Center, 80 Tangent Street.  And, if you’ve never visited our website, we encourage you to pop in at www.lebanonsquarecirclers.com.

The club is sponsoring two different classes. The Sunday night class is two-step and is being taught by Mark McDonald with the assistance of Marilyn Schmit. There are 12 students in attendance with the help of some angels and they are progressing well. The Thursday night class is split into four sections. The Slo-Two Step is from 6:30 to 7 pm with one new student. Then we dance phase 3-4 until about 7:35 pm. The Cha class starts at 7:40 until about 8:25 p.m. with 12 students, including five retreads. Seven of the students are youth from Silver City Squares who are learning something new they can use at competitions. Then we finish out the evening from 8:25 to about 9:15 p.m. Randy Lewis and Debbie Olson are the instructors for the entire evening.

We have the Dance Center reserved for the New Year’s Eve dance and will start making plans soon. Time to get the advertising out for a wonderful, successful year of dancing.

Happy Fall Y'all! It was an Indian Summer Day that led to our Hawaiian theme dance on October 6.  Fun was had by all.

Our Annual Corn & Cluck Dance had five squares on the floor most of the evening.  Chicken Races were a blast.  Last year's winner, Evie Lee, placed second and Linda from the Wavesteppers took 1st prize.  It was a close race decided with a tape measure.  There were lots of laughs, loads of food and dancing for all.

Our 5th Friday Plus dance had four squares on the floor including one-and-a-half squares for the Advanced tip.  Randy Dibble put us through our paces to the delight of all.

We have one more dance in October on the 20th.  November brings two dances and December three. Love to see you in a square.

Lesson season for us has started off with a big bang!! We are now in our 4th week of Mainstream and past our open weeks. We had 69 students come try and it looks like we will have about 56 students staying with it for now, and we hope all the way to graduation. While the majority is again youth, we have a larger proportion that is between 20-30 and quite a few parents. We are starting to fill in some of the mission age groups. We are having 11 squares on the floor most of the night.

We have had our third week of 2-step lessons and again we are now past our open weeks. We have had 31 come try with it looks like about 21 staying with it, about 18 couples on the floor.

Now - think about this - we did very little in the way of advertising this year. This is mostly word of mouth. We did not publish or post any flyers for the mainstream class. We did have flyers at our hall and sent them out to our club members. We did post the flyer for the 2-step class, but most of the students were from our club members personally inviting people.

We have the first Mid-Willamette Area new dancer dance this year. We have moved it from our hall to Bethany Charter School. Please see our flyer for more information.

We are doing a youth overnight dance/party at our hall for New Year's Eve again this year. We are planning for squares, rounds, lines and Old English Country to be at intro level so that the youth can invite their friends to try things out. More info to come on this next month.

The PAC welcomed 53 dancers to our 5th Friday dance on September 29 at the Oak Grove Community Club. We saw many outfits true to our theme of “Apples Abound.” The caller was Darrell Kalmbach, and the cuer was Julie Stiers. We had a wonderful time and appreciated the hard work of our co-hosting club, the Buzzin’ Bees, which received over $100 from the dance proceeds.

We won’t have a PAC dance on December 29, due to the proximity to New Year’s Eve. See you at the Tri-Council Dance at the Aloha Grange on March 30, 2024.

Chaps and Petticoats’ open enrollment has concluded for Mainstream Lessons. Lessons will continue each Sunday (through 2023 year) at Maplewood Grange, 5-7 PM, and Angels are welcome to attend at no charge for your participation. Students can pay as they go, $7/night, or receive a discount for prepayment.

Our October 6 Pirate Dance was well attended with four squares on the floor (not walking the plank). Our audience chose these costume winners: Female wench was Charlynn Newton; Pirate was Robert Lumsden; and couple winners were Gene and Patricia Neils. Many thanks to our ‘Ahoy Matey’ Caller, Scott Zinser, and Cuer Julie Stiers. Aaarh!

Maplewood Grange will be co-hosting a Harvest Festival on October 28th from 3:00 - 6:30 pm. Games will be played upstairs (ring toss, costume contest, raffles, and prizes awarded), Pumpkins provided for painting downstairs (take yours home), and Pasta Dinner will be served (gluten free and vegetarian options too). Proceeds from Donations received at the door will benefit the local School Lunch Program.

On Friday, November 3, our Caller will be Scott Zinser and cuer will be Lane Clem. We look forward to dancing with you beginning at 7:30pm.

On our usual third Friday dance night, November 17, we will be dark. Instead Chaps and Petticoats will host a New Dancer “Turkey Trot” Jamboree from 4 - 7:30 PM on Sunday, November 19. We break to serve a Turkey Dinner at 5:30 PM then return to the floor to dance it off with Scott Zinser and guest cuer (to be determined).

Our club had a visitation to Country Cut-ups anniversary dance. It was a very enjoyable dance, and we took home a banner from their club.

Our lessons are in progress and our students are doing well. We will have a square dance clothing sale on November 11 before and after our dance. This gives new dancers as well as other dancers a chance to get some nice outfits at an affordable price.

We will be having a new dancers dance at our regular dance on November 26. All are welcome to join us and bring your new dancers.

Looking forward to welcoming guests to our dances.

The Ramblers brought 9 dancers to the Country Cut-ups anniversary dance on October 7 and, as a result, brought home the banner that the Cut-ups had earned by attending our anniversary dance last February. Now that’s the kind of reciprocal hospitality that makes square dancing so much fun!

We are continuing our fall lesson series on Wednesday evenings. We have 20 students, so our biggest challenge has been finding enough angels to keep our student/angel ratio effective. Our teacher is Rick Hawes, who is doing a great job teaching the calls while keeping smiles on the students’ faces.

We look forward to our monthly social dance on November 11, with Kris Jensen calling. Kris lives in Albuquerque but has deep roots in Oregon. Our theme will be Singing in the Rain(bows). We alternate Social Square Dance and Plus tips from 7 to 9:30 at the Oak Grove Community Club, 14496 SE Cedar Ave., Milwaukie. Although this dance is not specifically a jamboree for new dancers, we encourage new dancers to attend. Our SSD tips will be called at the class level.

Classes are going well for our SSD students. We have about 12 that are attending our Tue class. We are also continuing with our Mainstream & Plus classes/Funshops on Thursdays, with about 2 squares each week.

Our community dance was a wonderful success with 7 squares of new and experienced dancing to the always fun J Domis. He always brings an enthusiastic group with him.

We are dark for our Oct 21st dance in order to support the Potato Festival. However, we will be having a special "Sunday Stomp" on Oct 29th with Dean Black and Chuck starting at 2pm.

Our next dance on Nov 4th will feature Roger Putzler & Bob Dingman. This is our Toys for Tots & Animal Shelter dance and we encourage those who can to bring a donation for either organization. November 18th is our Sadie Hawkins Dance with Chuck & Elaine.

We will have our Birthday dance on Dec 16th (this year only it will be the 3rd Saturday, rather than the 1st Saturday). We will welcome the wonderful Buddy Weaver to our hall and hope we get visitors, and that the weather cooperates! Rikki will be cueing. The fun starts at 6pm with Advanced squares. We are also busy planning our 2024 Boatnik Festival. We are excited to welcome David & Dawn Mee from Anaheim as our featured talent - they are a great duo!! Please pre-register so we can plan a successful weekend!!

Well here we are.... our 3rd Annual Country Fever Dance/Campout Weekend is behind us! We kicked off our weekend on Friday night after dinner was over, and had everyone standing for our flag salute and then listened to the power American song 'God Bless the USA' by Lee Greenwood.

WOW! What a Weekend of FUN and great memories created! The warmth of family, and love between dancers hugging, laughing and sharing home cooked meals together was just a pure JOY to see!

Our numbers this year were smaller than previous, at 4.5 + squares of people, of which not all that attended were able to dance, but even though we only had 3+ squares on the floor all weekend, everyone had a boot stompin' FUN FUN time! and that's what matters the most!

Jim did a great job calling all weekend, challenged the minds with the Plus dancers at Saturday morning Plus Workshop and Mark cued a great program with a nice variety of rhythms for all dancers to enjoy!

Our Club has had a slight change to our Fall Season home program dancing schedule which is basically...

On October 14, the Family and Friends of Gary Gent gathered to “Yellow Rock” and “Remember”. The thoughts and remembrances were all from the heart. There were funny tidbits and a lot of emotional ones. Gary was much loved and a good friend to most all he encountered.

Quite a few of the Stars are heading for Klamath Falls for the Potato Festival, October 20 & 21. They will enjoy the calling of Jim Steele and the cueing of Dave Cooper. It should be a great fun weekend.

On October 28th, the Stars will have a “Spooky Saturday” Dance to celebrate Halloween. Come in costume if you like.

To plan ahead, the Stars are going to have a “Game Night” the Saturday after Thanksgiving. The potluck will be “Thanksgiving leftovers” Come join us.

The September TVC meeting was held at the Aloha Grange and was presided by TVC President Dale Brabham. We started the evening with a chili dinner and the 26 attendees then continued with the meeting. Reports were delivered by the Council officers and appointees. The Council has re-instated the TVC traveling banner to be awarded to the club with highest percentage of their members in attendance at a TVC dance. The next TVC event will be the New Year’s Eve dance at the IOOF Hall, Hillsboro. Our next meeting will be via Zoom on Monday, October 23rd.

The Council encourages all dancers to attend Anniversary dances. It is important to support our dancing community. The Sunset Promenaders Plus will celebrate their 9th anniversary on Thursday November 2nd at the IOOF Hall in Hillsboro, Darrell Kalmbach calling and Tami Helms cueing. See the Sunset Promenaders report below for additional details.

Since the OFN is published about the 20th of the month, you still have time to plan on attending the Mix & Mingle 39th Anniversary October 21st, at the Winona Grange with Randy Dibble and a guest cuer. See their October report below for additional details.

Once again 100% of the TVC club reporters submitted OFN reports, the only Council in the state to do so. While not newsworthy as it is something they regularly do, this is an achievement I do not mind repeating.

It is amazing what a sign saying something is FREE will do. The club sponsored four free dance nights in September to have interested folks try modern square dancing (It ain't what you had in school). We have four squares of new and angel dancers coming on Sunday evenings now. Lots of energy in the hall as Daryl puts them through the learning process. It is the club’s intent to have a BEGINNERS DANCE on Sunday, December 17th for all clubs who are having beginning classes this fall. The dance would be during normal class hours, 6 to 8 PM. Mark the date on your calendar.

November 3rd and 17th are our usual Friday dance nights with famed caller Daryl Clendenin calling and cueing. The energy that was before COVID is slowly coming back. Come dance with our friendly crew.

Hope to see you in a square.

Hayshakers - Link
The number of students attending our series of square dance lessons which started on September 10th has dwindled to a few and some weeks none at all. When new students are present, the first hour and a half are Basic lessons followed by a half hour each of Mainstream drill and Plus lessons involving a few new moves each week. When no new students are present we work at improving our Mainstream proficiency and mastering the complexities of Plus.

Hoedowners - Link
Do you remember the 1966 hit by The Happenings called “See You in September”? It was a great dance song, (double clutching, not square dancing) and certainly holds lots of memories. It was the Hoedowner theme song for the summer and by golly, we have seen most of our favorite people back on the dance floor this fall.

We held two dances in September. On the 9th we enjoyed Melissa James calling and Randy Lewis cueing at our School Daze Dance. It was great to hear a female voice.

On September 23rd we celebrated the Summer’s End Dance with Daryl Clendenin on stage and Randy Lewis calling. It was great to see Daryl and hear his familiar songs and patter.

Our lesson started on Tuesday, September 12th from 7-9. This class is so quick to learn, it’s been amazing and kudos to Terry Halley for challenging the dancers to learn. We’re also enjoying his varied music selection.

The Hahn Barn dance returned for its first September appearance. It was a wonderful, down-home evening as usual.

In November the Hoedowners will sponsor a Veteran’s Day Dance that falls on the real Veteran’s Day, November 11th and in November we’ll be hosting the Fall Fling dance on November 25th. Warning: this is 2 days after Thanksgiving and the day after the Civil War game. You’ll probably need a change of pace.

The Oak Hills Squares have welcomed several new dancers to our lessons held in September and we hope to welcome new members to our club. After lessons from 6:30 to 7:30, current members continue dancing mainstream for an additional hour. Mark Wheeler, our caller, has introduced several plus calls, and we enjoy challenging ourselves to new moves.

On September 11th Marie and Lane Clem, charter members of the Oak Hills Squares, shared some club history and Marie prepared a display of pictures from the earliest years. We all celebrated the founding date of the club with treats provided by the Lane and Marie, as well as fruits and vegetables brought by several of our gardeners.

Our club had a good showing of participants in the Hahn Barn Dance on September 30th, and reported having a wonderful time. Our social director, Barb Laney, encouraged all to attend the Valley Squares October 21st dance at Aloha Grange.

Halloween falls on Tuesday, the day before our dances are scheduled. At this writing the plan is to celebrate on the 30th by wearing costumes or Halloween colors, and bring refreshments to share.

R Square D - Link
Twelve R Square D members visited Independence Wagon Wheelers at the Salem Square Dance Center on September 9th to welcome their new caller, Daryl Clendenin. Our caller, Craig Abercrombie, and wife, Judy, also attended the dance. Daryl and Craig called together more than once during the evening. We retrieved our travel banner as well as receiving a banner from IWW. A fun night!

R Square D had a Roaring 20’s dance on September 8th and it was great that so many came in outfits from that era (see our picture in the October OFN). September 23rd was our second annual Neil Diamond Tribute dance and we had six squares dancing that night. Craig Abercrombie and Susan Healea called and cued to many Neil Diamond songs and it was a fantastic dance!

November 10th is our annual Veteran’s Day dance and veterans will get in free that night. It will also be a class level dance (Callerlab moves 1-48), so plan to bring your students to this dance. Craig and Susan will call and cue that night, as well as at our November 25th Gospel Dance. Come out and dance off some of that excess Thanksgiving “baggage”!

Our lessons continue on Wednesday evenings at Kelso Senior Center, with Plus at 6:30 and the beginning class at 7:30.

Sunset Promenaders - Link
November 4th and November 18th are our mainstream dances with Darrell Kalmbach calling and Tami Helms cueing. The November 18th dance has a theme of "Give thanks"

November 2nd and the 16th are Promenaders Plus dances. Darrell Kalmbach is calling, and Tami Helms is cueing. November 2nd is the 9th anniversary of the Promenaders Plus dance. Ice cream, brownies and cupcakes will be served after the dance.

Waltz classes continue on Sundays from 2-4:30 with Tami Helms and Tim Keck instructing. We have a pretty large class with over 8 couples attending and having a really fun time together.

The TVC Barn dance was held at our members Gary and Bette Hahn's farm on September 30th. There were 5 squares and a few extra dancers. Mark Wheeler was MC and caller, and Lane Clem was Co MC and cuer. The weather was perfect, and everyone had a great time not only dancing but enjoying the potluck together before the dance. Thank you very much to Gary and Bette for opening their barn and farm for this event! Thank you to Mark and Lane for calling and cueing!

In September we attended a visitation to the Tri-Squares anniversary dance. We had a square and one half that attended of about six total squares. We came home with a Tri Squares banner and won a bunch of door prizes. A good time was had by all.

The second weekend in September a number of our members attended a camp out in Lincoln City at the Wapiti RV Park. Those attending enjoyed each other, good food and a beautiful setting.

In September we began with our first dance of the year, "Luau Party" followed by our "Anniversary Dance" both called by Terry Halley and cued by Sandra Pinion. We had hoped to have KC Curtis join with Terry for the anniversary dance, but KC had been ill. I hope he's recovering well by now. On the 16th we made a visitation to the Braids and Braves in McMinnville, another club Sandra cues at, with Leonard Snodgrass calling. At the end of September some of us made it to the Hahn Barn dance, where it was chillier than usual outside for the potluck but just right inside with everybody dancing. On the 24th our fall lessons for Two Step and Mainstream began, and a whopping 23 students showed up for Mainstream!

In November our lessons continue on Sunday afternoons at the Kinton Grange, at 2:00 for Two Step and 3:30-5:30 for Mainstream. TWO EXCEPTIONS: 1) the lesson on November 5th will be held at the Twin Oaks Airpark, which is just 3.5 miles west from our grange, at 12405 SW River Road. We did this last year, too, because our grange was booked with its annual festival, and it was a lot of fun! And 2) both our lessons on November 19th are cancelled so that our students can go join the 4:00 "Turkey Trot" New Dancer Dance and turkey dinner at the Maplewood Grange in Aurora, with the Chaps and Petticoats.

In between we have our "Grateful Harvest Pie Party" dance on Friday, November 10th, and our "Black Friday" black and white dance on Friday the 24th, both at Kinton Grange: 7pm for Plus & PreRounds, 7:30-9:30 for Mainstream, Plus & Rounds. Terry and Sandra will call and cue for both dances.

It sure is great to see all this activity once again!

Wave Steppers - Link
It was a disappointment to have to cancel one of our dances in September due to lack of attendance. Maybe, now that the weather has changed, more folks will come to the dances instead of working in the garden or playing on the beach.

Our dance venue is the Tillamook Senior Center, 316 Stillwell Avenue. Located on the corner of 4th and Stillwell there is no on site parking and little street parking. The huge Tillamook Coliseum Theater parking lot is directly across the street. Our dances are held weekly on Tuesdays from 4:00 to 6:00. Our caller/cuer is Lane Clem. It is a good idea to call before you make the trip to see if we have enough folks for a square.
