President's Corner
Happy Holidays to everyone! As we head into the holidays we are also entering into our new dancer dance season. Make sure you are encouraging your students to attend these dances at their level AND YOU ARE GOING WITH THEM! They need to know that there will be someone they already know at the dance. Offer to give a ride or meet them there.
Before letting your students or newer dancers go off to a dance, please consider going over some common etiquette for square dancers. We all need a refresher on etiquette regularly (even if we think we know everything we need to know). Make sure you give new dancers a chance to ask questions ahead of time on what they may experience.
Square dancers pride themselves on being friendly, courteous and honest on and off the dance floor. Following are a few items to remember when attending a square dance:
- Bathe diligently and refrain from garlic and alcohol prior to dancing.
- Wear proper square dance attire. You will see many styles on a square dance floor from the longer prairie-type skirts to the short petticoated dresses. Any mention of "full attire required" means that ladies will be expected to wear some sort of dress/skirt (don’t forget to wear pettipants or shorts under your skirt), men will be expected to wear long sleeves and that any attire, as always, should be neat and clean. Check all hats at the door. Hats can be dangerous and eyes have been damaged by their brims. Check advertising on the dance – this may be a special “theme” dance and costumes may be encouraged.
- Wear a name badge. There are a lot of people to meet and badges help refresh the memory.
- Show up on time. You will need to sign in and have time to greet those you know and make a new friend.
- Join the nearest square needing a couple. Do not pass by a square needing a couple to join another square. Introduce yourself as if no one in the square knows you. A stranger is just a friend whom you haven't met yet. Avoid cliques and give others the chance to meet and dance with you.
- Do not go through a square on your way to another square – go around.
- Recognize your corner, not only what she/he is wearing, but who she/he is. Next to your partner she/he is the most important person in your square.
- Remember who you are every time you square up -- heads, sides and what couple (1, 2, 3 or 4).
- Listen to the caller. Even if you think you know what he's going to say, someone else in the square may not. OR the caller may call something other than what you expect. After a tip, applaud the caller and thank your fellow dancers.
- Keep smiling even if you are angry with yourself for "goofing". The other seven people in the square may think you are frowning at them.
- Forgive other dancers if they "goof". We all get our turn and next time it may be yours!
- Never walk out on a square! This is the cardinal sin of square dancing. Ask for help and let others help you. If you walk out of the square then nobody gets to dance.
- Regular square dancing is not a competition. Don't speed through the calls or perform time-consuming "cutesy styling". High flung kicks can be dangerous to those around you. There is plenty of time to learn any “extras”. Don’t force a newer dancer into styling that they have not experienced – let them watch and come to you with a question on how to do something.
- Be gentle, especially with the ladies, but not so gentle that you become a "limp noodle."
- Pay attention to what badges someone is wearing! If they are wearing a “Don’t Twirl Me”, obey it. They have a reason for wearing this, please respect it.
For those of you who attend Mid-Winter Festival each year, please make sure that the newer dancers and students in your club/classes are aware of the festival and that there are halls where they can dance at their level. This is a great opportunity to meet others from around the state, out of state or even another country!

Editor's Note
This issue marks the beginning of our 10th year since moving the Oregon Federation News to an online publication. I know not everyone was happy with this decision, but it seems to be working out OK, and we have saved the Federation a lot of money.
This month, the Washington 2024 Summer Festival begins advertising for their festival in July.

- Mid-Winter Festival Resale Clothing
Is your closet bulging at the seams? Are you hankering to recycle some of your square dance or round dance clothes? Or, have you moved on and are no longer able to join in the festivities?
Well, Mid-Winter Festival is fast approaching. For many of you it provides an opportunity to recycle a few or many of those outfits taking up space in your closets. For others, it is a sad time when you are saying, “I just can’t dance anymore”, and you want someone else to enjoy those beautiful outfits you have received so much pleasure wearing over the years.
But first let’s look closely at some key tips to selling your clothing items at Mid-Winter Festival 2024. Follow closely the online instructions and email your list of items in by January 19, 2024.
Note: If you are having any problems completing the form online, then by all means hand write it and mail it in. We will input it to the computer for you. Please email or call Sheila for assistance. If you snail mail your list, it must be received by January 12, 2024. Please, read the instructions very, very carefully.
Make sure the items are clean and in good repair. Square and Round dance clothing only, please.
Bring your items, listed by categories to simplify the tagging process for you to the consignment tables. Labels will be printed in the order that you have numbered them on the submission form.
If you have sets, keep/place them together. This will help you with the tagging process and may even help them to sell.
Please, be early to consignment. Be sure to check the hours and plan on Thursday afternoon (3:00 pm) or Friday morning (9:00 am) so they will be prominently placed on the racks for the opening sales activity Friday evening.
As with so many activities it is getting more and more difficult to get volunteers to help. Resale Clothing is one of those areas that require a large number of volunteers to make it available for all the dancers.
We can no longer accept clothing items at the festival that were not listed for consignment before the input deadline.
We are sorry it has come to this. But we hope you will utilize the online submission process. Or you can hand write it and send it to us. Just print out the input/submission sheet for completion by hand. We want to help you recycle the many beautiful outfits that you all have.
As I said earlier we require a large number of volunteers to assist during consignment and sale hours. We will accept any help, even if for just one (1) hour. So, contact the chair for Resale Clothing – Sheila - and let her know you want to help.
Don’t forget to pick up your returns by 10:00 a.m. on Sunday morning.
For assistance contact the following individual -- preferably by email.
Sheila Machado at sheilainsalem@hotmail.com or if you must call my phone at
503-884-0158.
- HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED WHAT IT WOULD BE LIKE TO BE A CALLER?
WELL........ IT’S GREAT!!
And, we need callers.
If a good piece of music gets your toe tapping,
if you can’t help singing along with the caller,
if you like sharing this wonderful activity with others,
you should try calling.
No! You’re not too young. No! You’re not too old.
It looks harder than it really is. Anyone with reasonable rhythm and can
carry a tune (most of the time), can be a caller. Like most activities, It
takes practice. But luckily, the practice is also fun.
We have an advantage these days, it’s called ZOOM. Since 2020 BC
(before Covid), I have been conducting weekly class sessions teaching
new callers how to call. At present we have several callers in various
parts of Oregon, two in New Jersey, one in Pennsylvania, two in
Australia and one in British Columbia. All online.
What you need to participate, is a laptop or desktop with camera and
microphone capability. You don’t have to leave home to learn what to
call. For Oregon, Washington and Northern California, the price is
$0.00.
We need callers and I am sitting here waiting to help you get started. If
you’d like to know more, contact me. We’ll be starting a new group
soon.

Cascade Callers & Cuers Assoc
Our next scheduled dance is supposed to be December 30, but with New Year's Eve the following night, we are canceling the CCCA's Fifth Saturday dance. Roger Putzler and Christina Corelli are hosting the New Year's Eve dance with pre-Rounds at 7:30 and squares from 8:00 to 10:00. Cost is $2.50 per person. No kidding! This was the cost of a dance a few decades ag’so! We'll celebrate NYE on New York City’s and Chicago (Roger's hometown) time and go home early to avoid the rush and also be able to celebrate with family and friends. Poppers and sparkling cider will be provided! Dancers bring the FUN!
Therefore, the next scheduled dances are March 30, 2024, June 29, 2024, and August 31, 2024 which is also Christina Corelli's birthday! Our fall of 2024 Fifth Saturday dance is November 30, 2024.
One of our members, Mike Kious and his wife Camille are new parents to a precious boy, Aidan. They have been bringing Aidan to dances when Mike calls. We all get a turn cuddling and holding this beautiful baby!

In October we were only able to hold one dance because at the time of our second one we had several people out with COVID. We were lucky that this happened then because on November 12 we had national caller Kris Jensen come to call for us and the Spin Cycle Squares afterwards, and it would have been such a shame to miss getting the opportunity to dance to her. She is amazing! We hope she will be out here on the West Coast again soon, but if not then next November.
We normally dance in Hall B (behind the building)at the Emerald Square Dance Center at 2095 Yolanda in Springfield from 1:30 to 3:30 on the 2nd and 4th Sundays. However, since we only have one and a half squares that attend regularly, we might have to cancel when there are not enough available dancers. Please be sure to check our website cas-sd.yolasite.com or the OFN to see what our schedule is supposed to be and then call Fred Beisse at 458-221-3564 one or two days in advance if youi are coming in from out of town and/or are not on Fred’s email list. Hope to see you in a square soon.

We started back dancing twice a month on the 3rd and 4th Fridays this past summer. We get callers from out of town to come call for us and Jackie Gale comes from Sweet Home to cue for us; however, Jackie is on a leave of absence as they wait for Bill Gale’s health to improve. Meanwhile, Christina Corelli has kindly been filling in for her. Jackie tells me she hopes to return in the near future.
In October we had two really fun dances each with a theme. The first one was on Oct. 20 with a Western Hoedwon and Chili Contest theme with Bruce Lowther and his wife Judy Russell cueing. The second one was a Halloween Costume Ball with Ian Craig calling and Christina Corelli cueing. Both dances had fantastic decorations with lots of photo opportunities (see our website at singletrees.blogspot.com to view some photos).
Our dances in November will be the 17th and the 24th (night after Thanksgiving) with the 1st dance featuring pie and ice cream and the second one turkey of course. Craig Abercrombie will call and cue on the 17th and Roger Puzler will call on the 24th. We do not know yet who will cue for us that evening. We’ll have two dances in December, the 14th and 22nd. Please come and join us if you are in the area. We dance from 7:30 to 10PM.

We continue to dance every Sunday from 4 to 6 with Tim Matteson calling mainstream and plus. We rarely go dark, but once in a blue moon it happens. Please call David Lajoie, our president, at 541-520-7311, to make sure we are dancing.
On Nov. 12 Kris Jensen, national caller, from Albuquerque, and Kurt Jensen's sister, called advanced at Cast-A-Shadow and also Mainstream and plus at Spin Cycle Squares. Our caller, Tim Matteson, had a chance to dance! We had dancers from Single Trees and Whirl-A-Ways join us. Kris did an awesome job!
We dance at the Emerald Dance Center at 2095 Yolanda in Springfield, Oregon 59477. All are welcome to join us any Sunday for fun dancing and camaraderie. It’s casual dress always.

We dance the second and third Saturdays in each month through June. We start at 7:00 with plus and 7:30 to 10:00 it is mainstream and rounds. We hosted a Veterans's Appreciation Dance on November 11. Marvin and Karen Baker presented a rose to the veterans in attendance. It was very special. Thank you Marvin, who is also a veteran, and Karen for making this dance extra special.
One of our former members and president of Whirl-A-Ways, Ken Cornelius, was able to attend Honor Flight. There were two buses of veterans from Oregon and their guardians. Ken's guardian was his son, Steve, who is also a veteran. Ken remarked that next time Steve can be the veteran, and Ken the guardian. There was a special Welcome Home for the veterans with flags, etc. It was a real tear jerker for sure. We appreciate our veterans and our current service members.
We enjoy Mike and Camille's new baby boy, Aidan, and take turns cuddling and holding him. He's already on the stage with his dad calling. He is also enjoying round dancing with Camille or Mike. What an awesome beginning to his life!

Cherry City Cloggers is very excited to have a full dance floor each time we meet and for all three classes. We have at least 15 cloggers that are taking the Introduction to Clogging Class at 5:30 each Tuesday evening. There are at least 15 Intermediate/Super cloggers at the 6:30 class, and at least that many at the 4:00 class each week. We are soooo excited for them and for us in keeping the tradition alive.
Balloting and election of officers was held in October and the winners will be announced in November.

The Corvallis Square dance lessons are going well under Bruce and Judy’s capable guidance!
In October, we hosted Oktoberfest and Halloween dances and had a wonderful time. In November we are planning a visitation and then are looking ahead to our festive Holiday dance on December 9. We will hold a potluck dinner beforehand.
We are extremely grateful for every visitor to our dances and have thoroughly enjoyed the dance season so far!

Now that we have had some dances at the Salem Square Dance Center, things are settling down a little. We know more of where things are, the shed from the fairgrounds has been moved to the backside of the dance center and we are hoping for more fun to come.
November will see us wearing red, white and blue for the November 11 dance, and we will have a visitation from Corvallis Squares. The second dance on December 9 is our annual silent auction, Christmas and New Dancer dance. Come and join us for a night of excitement as the dancers vie for the goods in the silent auction. See the flyer elsewhere here in the OFN.
There are about twelve students in the mainstream class on Sunday evenings. They are progressing well under the tutelage of Bruce Lowther.

Coming up is our Wild, Wild West Dance in November, and our Toy Drive Dance in December (discounted fee with the contribution of a new, unwrapped toy).
We are pleased to report that our Mainstream class has over twenty students and our Two-Step class is off to a great start. Unfortunately, we had to cancel our Advanced lessons as we did not quite have enough for a square. However, we plan to have Plus lessons, probably starting in February, once our Mainstream students have graduated.

The slo-two step class is small but doing well, and the Cha class is going like gangbusters. Our regular dancers are not attending very well since they mostly already know the dance moves for these two rhythms. Hopefully, they will return once this set of lessons is over.
We have the hall reserved for New Year’s Eve and are in the planning stage now. We are hoping for a good show of dancers for a fun evening. Our cuers, Randy Lewis and David Vomocil, have plans for an entertaining program of various rhythms and levels.
The Sunday two-step class had a setback with the resignation of the cuer, Mark McDonald, effective immediately. Stephanie Lozano was asked to finish out the season and she has agreed. So, between her and Marilyn Schmit, the two of them will get the job done and see how we do.

We will be having an overnight dance on New Year's Eve. This will be an intro level dance for squares, rounds, lines and Old English Country dancing. We are telling our youth to invite their friends to come try things out and hang out with the group. See you at a dance soon.

We hope you are all enjoying the holidays with family, friends, and dancing.
We had a busy and enjoyable November with our continued dance lessons and club dances and visitation.
Our dance on November 11 also had a gently-used square dance clothing sale, giving our students and others the opportunity to get clothing at a very affordable price. On Sunday November 19, we took our students along with our club members to Chaps and Petticoats’ Turkey Trot new dancer jamboree and turkey dinner.
At our club dance on Saturday November 25, we will host a new dancer jamboree and another used clothing sale before and after the dance.
We are looking forward to welcoming guests to our dances on December 9 and 23, as we celebrate the holiday season together. We dance the second and fourth Saturday of each month.
Wishing you all a happy dancing and joy.

Our November 11 social dance was a barn burner, with Kris Jensen calling. We had 6 squares, including a visitation from Happy Hoppers, who took home another Ramblers banner. We were thrilled to welcome visitors from Vancouver, BC, and Eugene. Eight of our current students attended this dance—their first experience dancing outside of a class environment. Judging from their ear-to-ear smiles, we think they had a great time.
Our next social dance will be on December 9, at Oak Grove Community Center, 14496 SE Cedar Ave., Oak Grove. Our caller will be Leo Catt, and the theme is Nuttier Than a Fruitcake. The fun starts at 7 pm. We alternate Mainstream and Plus tips.
Looking ahead to 2024, you will want to put January 13 on your calendar. That’s our annual Black and White Ball, with Seattle’s stupendous Stephen Cole doing the calling honors. And our next lesson series will start on January 17 at Bridgeport United Church of Christ, 621 NE 76th Ave., Portland 97213.

We continue to have our Plus Workshops every Wednesday Evening 6:00-7:30pm.
We have had some interest in adding in a little bit of Advanced moves, with Jim calling it directionally and our 6-7 couples of Plus dancers seem to really enjoy a refreshing change at least to PLAY with some Advanced, but it's not actually lessons.
We continue to have our Mainstream Workshops every Sunday 4:00-5:30pm.
Our attendance of dancers has been really poor, with barely getting 4 couples to come, we had two Sundays in a row that we only had 3 couples total that showed up so had to send dancers home, but still had to pay for our hall, that's just not right. We honestly don't know why the dancers in our area don't want to support our Mainstream Workshops. We may not continue come January if the attendance doesn't change.
We will put on our Christmas Party & Dance Sunday, Dec 17th, Caller: Jim Steele, Cuer: Mark McDonald.
Thinking of making it a Xmas Potluck and dance 5:00 - 7:30pm so in case our winter weather turns ugly on us, everyone can still drive home early evening instead of late. Also, may have our dancers donate warm cozy blanket throws for us to give away to a local organization, these details are still being worked on.

We will be honoring our 2023 prices of $45 per person until January 31, 2024, right after Mid-Winter Festival.
Our 2024 prices for Pre-Registration will go up to $55 per person (includes 4 meals for weekend) from Feb 1, 2024 until Sept 15, 2024. Prices at the Door will be $60 per person

We will, however, have our Annual New Year's Eve dance and celebrate the New Year at midnight on New York time or 9pm PST. The October TVC meeting was held via Zoom with 14 members present with TVC President Dale Brabham presiding. Reports were delivered by the Council officers and appointees. The nominating committee is being formed to recruit a slate of candidates for next year.
A special thanks to all the clubs that turned out for the Hahn Barn Dance and congratulations to Valley Squares for highest club participation and taking home the TVC banner.
The next TVC event will be the New Year’s Eve dance at the IOOF Hall, Hillsboro with Darrell Kalmbach calling and Tami Helms cueing. The format will be: 7:00 to 7:15 pm, Rounds, 7:15 to 7:30 pm, Plus, and 7:30 to 9:30 pm, Mainstream with every 3rd tip Plus.
Once again 100% of the TVC club reporters submitted OFN reports, the only Council in the state to do so. While not newsworthy as it is something they regularly do, this is an achievement I do not mind repeating.

December is going to be a great month to dance with us. On December 1st Mark Wheeler will be calling and will probably have Elvis with him. On the 15th our own Daryl Clendenin will call. Those dance nights will feature plus from 7 to 7:30 and mainstream from 7:30 to 9:30.
Then, on Sunday, the 17th, we will have a beginners dance from 6 PM to 8. Daryl will call beginners at floor level. We all know the best way to improve is get out and get floor time. If your club will be sending beginners, regular dancers can show support by being there with them.
Finally, the CRDs will be hosting the annual New Year’s Eve dance with Adam Christman and Craig Abercrombie doing the calling and cueing. The theme is New Years In Chicago. We will plan on celebrating new years eve at the same time as those in Chicago. That is, when it is 12 o’clock midnight in Chicago ( 10 PM here) we will celebrate and have a last tip. Our dance will be from 7 to 10 mainstream with third tips plus. This gives young dancers time to go somewhere and ring in the new year as they wish. It also gives us old-timers time to get a good nights sleep and get up to see the parade in Pasadena on new years day.
Remember we dance at the Manor Grange at the corner of 179th Street and 72nd Avenue.
So, what has been happening otherwise? Our beginners class has two plus squares moving along under Daryl’s instruction. He has been aided by his caller student, Renee Ruud.
We had a good club turnout for the Seaside Sashay this year. It was great to see over 260 people filling the hall and to dance with new and old friends. The weather was clear and cold and the dancing was wonderful.
Your reporter is looking forward to the new year. Come join us and help us ring in a new and better year of square dancing.
Hope to see you in a square.

The Eager Beavers celebrated Halloween with a dance welcoming costumes on October 30th, which was as festive as always. In December we will be dark on Christmas Day. Our Christmas dance will be held on December 18th.
We had 17 members attend Seaside Sashay. Our club caller Darrell Kalmbach shared the calling duties. It was a fun weekend. Gary Clark delivered on his promise for a sunny weekend. See current OFN pictures for a collage photo of dancing on the turnaround.
We dance Plus with Phase II and III Rounds every Monday from 1:00 to 3:00pm, featuring Darrell Kalmbach calling and Jeanine Norden cueing.

Some Hayshakers are considering going to the Midwinter Festival in January by taking a bus from Astoria to Portland, boarding an Amtrak train to Albany, and then taking a free Albany bus from the train station to the fairgrounds. We plan to stay in a hotel adjacent to the fairgrounds. Zero driving in unpredictable weather.

October is always a month of transition, fall to winter, warm, sunny days to rain. Hoedowners were keeping our lessons on track and our regular dancers dancing. On the 14th we had a Randy and Randy Dance, Randy Lewis and Randy Dibble. Dancing with dibble, dibble is always lots of fun. Then to add to the festivities, we had pizza, pizza in the dining room after so everyone could sit round a table and nibble, nibble. Whew! Double Duty.
On the 28th we all headed west for the Seaside Sashay. Dancing at the turnaround, dancing at the convention center, and dancing at the outlet mall! It was cool, crisp, and sunny! Hope you had a chance to get down. As always, the Hoedowners dined at our favorite spot, Finn’s with an after party at Laas’. We had a big bonfire, but it was too cold to eat and visit outside so we watched the flames from inside. A great end to a great weekend.
What’s ahead?? In December we’ll be dancing at the Aloha Grange on the 9th and we’ll be dark on the 23rd. We’re assuming you’ll be shopping, wrapping, baking or napping that day. Merry Christmas to everyone. See you in 2024.

Thanks to all who attended the M&M’s 39th birthday dance in October. There were 4 squares - including one “phantom” dancer”. Oh what fun we had with the old faces, new faces, Randy Dibble and Lane Clem.
Maybe we’ll see you in a square in December, celebrating friends and saying goodbye to 2023.

Oak Hills squares continue to enjoy a good turnout for our Monday Night dancing with Mark Wheeler as caller. Lessons are from 6:30 to 7:30. A few newbies depart after lessons, and then our "regular" dancers continue with mainstream dancing until 8:30. We had lots of laughs recently as we learned "Grand Colonel Spin" and "Load the Boat" this past month. Thanks to Mark for his patience!
On October 30 we held our Halloween Dance with members wearing costumes and enjoying refreshments between tips.
As of this writing, the club plans to hold a Holiday Dance with decorations and refreshments on December 18. Come join a fun group of energetic people as we dance, form friendships, and create a community together.

R Square D hosted Fall Festival in mid-October with Callers Craig Abercrombie and Adam Christman with Cuer Susan Healea providing great music and fun dancing throughout the festival. River City Riders’ performance on Saturday night was a treat, as always! The festival was well-attended and our club has decided to host this again next October.
Beginning lessons continue on Wednesday evenings with seven students. We are encouraging them to attend “new dancer” or “class level” dances as much as possible. The Plus class is also going well and we are grateful for the help of our angels.
R Square D has only one December dance, which is “Sounds of the Season” on December 8th. Craig Abercrombie and Susan Healea will call and cue this dance.
Our annual Christmas party will be December 18th at Kelso Senior Center. We’ll enjoy ham with potluck side dishes and goodies. The gift exchange is always great fun with people being able to “steal” gifts others have opened or select a new gift.
For current information, please see our website: http://r-square-d.info/. (see link above)
We wish all our dance friends a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

In October we had our two Friday dances, including a Halloween dance with prizes for costumes. Our lessons continued well each week, and two of them were at the Twin Oaks Air Park hanger because our grange was busy with their fall festival. Ten of us visited the Chaps & Petticoats on October 20th and won a banner! And several of us attended the Sunset Promenaders Anniversary Dance, too.
In December our lessons for Mainstream and Two Step are ending on the 3rd. Mainstream continues in January. We do not plan to make any visitations during the holidays. We have two Friday dances: "Rat Pack Reflections" (music from Frank Sinatra's era) on December 8th, and on December 22nd "Sounds of the Season". Plus, our annual Christmas party is on the 10th at the Royal Panda in Tualatin again, because they have a nice side-area for our group, besides great food. And yes! There WILL be another White Elephant Gift Exchange!

As we do each year the Wavesteppers go dark for December and January. We have several snowbirds who fly south for warmer weather which leaves us without enough dancers to have a dance. We will resume dancing on February 6th.
Our caller, Lane Clem, has resigned his position so we are looking for a new club caller. We have a couple of months to accomplish this.
Our dance venue is the Tillamook Senior Center, 316 Stillwell Avenue. Located on the corner of 4th and Stillwell there is no on site parking and little street parking. The huge Tillamook Coliseum Theater parking lot is directly across the street. Our dances are held weekly on Tuesdays from 4:00 to 6:00 except the dark months in winter.
