February 2024

A publication of the Oregon Federation of Square and Round Dance Clubs

Printed 20 February 2024
President's Corner

As we move into February, we are experience both sweet and sorrow. As a state, we are mourning the loss of more dancing friends and callers. We have lost both Leonard Snodgrass and Ian Craig during January. They will both be missed. They are not the only ones we have lost, please pay attention to the notices in the OFN which are posted when we get informed of the passing of another friend. Please don’t forget to reach out to the family members of those who have passed – let them know you are thinking of them, you too miss the one now gone, offer to help them.

Mid-Winter Festival came at the end of January. I hope everyone had a lot of fun! I sure did.

We have a lot to look forward to this month and this year. February has Super Bowl for those who actually watch and follow football (sorry – I really don’t pay any attention to football at any level); Valentine’s Day, which falls on a Wednesday this year – so take your sweetheart out to dinner on the day and then to a square dance on the weekend.

There are a lot of festivals and special dances throughout the year. Keep a watch for flyers and information on bulletin boards, at dances and especially on our Oregon Federation website. Make sure you are passing information along to our newer dancers and encourage them to explore the Federation website and OFN.

Hope to see you at a dance soon.

Karyn Buchheit

Summer Festival

"Sashay to Salem 2024" will be held at Blanchet Catholic School in Salem on July 12 to 14, 2024.

Hi everyone. We have excitedly started planning your summer festival. It will be July 12-14th, 2024 at Blanchet Catholic school. So mark those calendars. We want to see all of you there. We have two new talents coming from Sparks, Nevada, and Grove City, Ohio. Neither one has ever been to Oregon, so we are thrilled to show off our state and our amazing dancers. We hope you are excited to come see some fabulous talent. So don't forget to get your ribbons. If you come see us at Mid Winter and register, you will be entered into a very special contest for free ribbons. We are hosting the after party on Friday night from 10-11 in Hall A. Cascade Callers & Cuers Assoc
Roger Putzler and Christina Corelli hosted a New Year's Eve dance with six squares dancing!  We had guests from Roseburg, the coast, and other places as well.  Pat and Cherie Cox and Sandy Harris called and cued guest tips. Everyone had a great time toasting New York City at 9:00 and  Chicago at 10:00.  We went home early and avoided the 'after-midnight' rush and celebrated with friends and family.

Our next scheduled dances are March 30, 2024, June 29, 2024, August 31, 2024 which is also Christina Corelli's birthday!  Our fall of 2024 Fifth Saturday dance is November 30,

Dancers from all of the clubs came out to undecorate the hall.  With many hands helping, Christmas and New Year's Eve decorations were put away and the hall cleaned in less than two hours.  A big Thank You to all who showed up!  It made a difference, and we had a great time too!

On a very sad note, Leonard Snodgrass, former member of Cascade Callers and Cuers Association passed away January 9 following cardiac arrest Saturday, January 6.  We are stunned to say the least.  Leonard moved to the Salem area where he continued to call and then starting cueing as well.  Our thoughts and prayers go out tor his partner Josie, and also Leonard's daughter.  Leonard will be sorely missed.

We only had one dance in December. We danced as usual to recorded tips. We dance normally on the second and fourth Sundays from 1:30PM to 3:30PM in Hall B at the Emerald Square Dance Center on Yolanda and 20th in Springfield. Please check our website at cas-sd.yolasite.com for tentative dates and then always call Fred Beisse at 541-683-2522 if you are not on his email list. He always sends out a notice if there will be enough dancers on hand to have a dance. Some of our dancers come from over an hour away to dance with us, and we appreciate their support.

Please join us when you are in the area. We’d love to dance with you.

We held two successful dances this month with two to three squares of dancers on the floor. The first was our stuffed toy drive for the Sheriff’s Office-- the toys to be given to young children caught up in a bad situation and the second one was our Holiday Dinner and Dance on the 22nd. The hall was full of glitz and glitter and Christmas cheer. Craig Abercrombie called and cued on the 15th and K.C. Curtis and Christina Corelli called and cued on the 22nd. We all had a great time.

Many Single Trees attended the New Year’s Eve Dance held by Roger Putzler and Christina Corelli who have often stepped in to provide some dancing for our square dance community on NYE. Again the hall was awash in lights and glamour thanks to our vice president Melba Walker who has a real penchant for decorating. There were party hats and noise makers provided as well as poppers and sparking cider was served to toast the new year Chicago time at 10PM. There were dancers from all over who came to welcome the new year with us. As well as our local club dancers and local guests, there were dancers from Lebanon and Sweet Home along with some from Roseburg and Medford and from the coast. Roger and Christina were joined on stage by other EEAC callers and cuers. Thank you Roger and Christina for hosting such a fabulous dance. There is a photo in the photo section showing the more than six squares of dancers that made the night so much fun—although by the time time Melba took this shot some had already gone home. This night will be long remembered, but we have lots of dancing to look forward to in 2024.

We were all saddened to learn that former Single Tree member Leonard Snodgrass passed away on Jan. 9 after suffering cardiac arrest on the 6th. We send best wishes to his loved ones.

This month (January) Single Tress donated the large bag of stuffed toys we had gathered together to the Lane County Sheriff’s Office for distribution to children in distress (see photo of Joy and Melba at the Sheriff’s Office). We also donated 44 pounds of food which had been gathered from members and guests to our dances over the past few months to Food for Lane County.

Happy New Year to All Belatedly!

We continue to dance every Sunday from 4 to 6 with Tim Matteson calling mainstream and plus.  We rarely go dark, but once in a blue moon it happens.  Please call David Lajoie, our president, at 541-520-7311, to make sure we are dancing.

Tim Matteson, our caller, hosted a second gathering at his home for those unable to view his spectacular 'playmobile' display in December.  He started working on his "playmobile" display in September.  It's very time consuming, but the results are always amazingly beautiful and intricate.  You can spend hours looking at everything.  This company is based in Germany.  Tim works on photos of his displays for the company. He's been to Germany a number of times as well.  This is the first time since COVID that he's been able to host such a gathering.  Awesome, as usual!

We dance at the Emerald Dance Center at 2095 Yolanda in Springfield, Oregon 97477.

All are welcome to join us any Sunday for fun dancing and camaraderie.  It’s casual dress always.

Whirl-A-Ways
We dance the second and third Saturdays in each month through June with plus at 7PM and mainstream and rounds from 7:30 until 10PM

One of our member, Scott Bolton, should be back to dancing very soon.  Scott has a new knee, and is our most recent 'Bionic Man!'  Surgery and healing were both successful.  Yay! Two other members, Marida Martin and Erik Swan are back in California for a couple of months but will be back dancing when they get back.   Scott and Gail Sandgaithe are off to Argentina and Antarctica.  Lucky them!  They are great supporters of Whirl-A-Ways and other clubs in our area.

Several Whirl-A-Ways members showed up to help undecorate and clean up the hall after New Year’s.  Thanks ever so much!

Whirl-A-Ways New Dancer Dance is January 20.  Please join us.

In February, we are excited about our Birthday Dance, and a visitation that our Visitation Chair is organizing. We look forward to seeing you on the dance floor!

Our second dance in December was a successful New Dancer dance with twelve squares in attendance. The silent auction netted about $500 for our chosen charity, Windsor House.

Our students will graduate on January 21 with approximately twelve dancers. They will be given applications for IWW and Willamette Squares, the co-sponsor of lessons.

Daryl Clendenin will be teaching a new mainstream class starting on February 25 from 1:00-2:30 p.m. at the Salem Square Dance Center. We have hopes for a successful class.

The Slo-Two Step class is two people strong. Others are coming for the review. I am doing the “boy” part, so it is a learning experience. It is fun to switch my brain and feet around.

The Cha dancers are looking at various songs to work on for the Showcase of Rounds at Mid-Winter. They are about six couples strong. They are working their way through Phase 4 cha moves and they will get to a few easy phases 5 moves or a new rhythm. Time will tell. There was no dancing the last two weeks of December due to a lack of participants.

New Year’s Eve was fun with twenty-three people in the building, all sorts of tasty food to eat, and a variety of music. Thanks to David Vomocil, Kathy Baumhardt, and Leonard Snodgrass for their contributions to the evening. Our cuer, Randy Lewis, had to bow out of NYE due to coming down with covid. He was bummed at missing the fun. We signed a card for him and sent him pictures.

The Sunday two step class graduated before Christmas and will do three more Sunday workshops to get ready for Mid-Winter. A waltz class will tentatively start on February 25 from 3:30-5:00 p.m.

Wow! What a December of Dances. December 1 was our New Dancer Dance. There were thirteen squares in attendance with eleven on the floor dancing every tip. The New Dancers did an amazing job. Thanks to all the Angels who came out to support the New Dancers.

December 15 was our Christmas Dance. We had eight squares in attendance with seven on the floor for Mainstream and five for Plus.

December 29 was our New Year's Eve Eve Dance with seven squares of dancers and six on the floor. We toasted 2024 a little early and had a wonderful time with lots of goodies to eat.

January brings us two dances and of course, Mid-Winter Festival.

Our Mainstream and Plus Classes graduated on January 10 with a Potluck and fun festivities, welcoming the 19 New Dancers and 15 Plus Dancers to our ranks. They have worked very hard and have had lots of fun. Let us all welcome them to our Wonderful World of Square Dancing.

February 2 is our Annual Wear Red Dance to bring awareness of Women's Heart Disease. Flyers will be available soon. February 16 is our third Friday dance.

We had a good turnout for our New Year's Eve dance, and we had about twenty-five stay overnight. Everyone had a lot of fun and stayed awake.

Mainstream graduation was just before Mid-Winter, and we graduated over fifty. The 2-Step class will graduate in early February with close to twenty graduating.

We are getting ready to start practice for the Pacific Northwest Teen Square Dance Festival. We have over fifty youth signed up wanting to go. We will have six squares, at least eight callers, three cuers, and at least ten round dance couples. We will also do the exhibition dance again this year. These are just preliminary numbers as we have more youth still signing up, and the squares/round couples are still being put together. We have Festival pins and cash raffle tickets available for sale. We will be having our fundraising dance on Saturday, February 24.

See you at a dance soon.

The PAC is looking forward to dancing with you all at the following council dances in 2024:

1. Tri-Council Dance at the Aloha Grange on March 30.

2. PAC 5th Friday dance at the Abernethy Grange, co-hosted by Bachelors and Bachelorettes, on May 31.

3. PAC 5th Friday dance at Oak Grove Community Center on August 30. This dance will be a community dance, in which we invite any and all members of our communities to give square dancing a try. The idea is to encourage brand new dancers to enjoy a free introduction to square dancing to support the many clubs that start lessons in the fall. Scott Zinser has generously agreed to donate his time and talents for this dance.

4. PAC 5th Friday dance at Milwaukie Community Club on November 29. This will be a new dancer Jamboree to support all the clubs who started lessons in the fall. Darrell Kalmbach will call, and Tami Helms will cue.

Our Mainstream class is doing well and should have graduated before this article appears. With angel assist, they are already dancing with us at regular dances. Three of them are returning for review and have rejoined the club. Several of our club members have already purchased ribbons and are looking forward to Mid-Winter Festival.

We are happy to report that our attendance is growing. We had enough dancers for four squares at our Black and White Ball.

BnBs will be having a fifth Wednesday dance on January 31, with Ian Craig calling and Tami Helms cuing.

February 7 will be our Valentines Dance, with Darrell Kalmbach calling On February 21, we look forward to our own Melissa James calling. Tami Helms will cue for the entire month. And we look forward to lots of visitors for a fun filled month of dancing.

We are blown away by the loss of Leonard Snodgrass. He was the Chaps and Petticoats Cuer on January 5. It was bizarre having one square but oh-so-fun with Leonard dancing the floor with us. We had a grand time. We were surprised to hear of his heart attack the next day—it didn’t seem real. Our memories linger; glad you were with us.

On December 30, the Chaps were part of seven squares at the Country Cut-Ups “Snow Ball” dance. Abercrombie and Chrisman rocked the night away, on the Eve of New Years Eve! Thank you, Cut-Ups, for the yummies too - sure made the evening fly by!

Now that Mid-Winter Festival “Mask”uerade is just around the corner, invite your new dancers to turn out. Round up your angels, and get them in a familiar square with your club. Your students will be surprised at how well they dance!

Don’t forget your Valentine in February. February is the Chaps and Petticoats Anniversary month, we are 49-ers (49 years young) in 2024. Our Friday dances begin February 2, with Scott Zinzer and Julie Stiers. How does one celebrate Groundhog Day, are there songs? We celebrate our anniversary on Feb 16, with the Flintstones Dance, our Caller Darrell Kalmbach and Cuer Tami Helms will dress the part, and our dancers will be the judge of who wins the costume prizes. Please join us as we “go way back” in time - dress the part or come casual.

Chaps and Petticoats will do something different and exciting in the month of March. On Friday, March 15, the Chaps and Petticoats have invited the Silverton youth to come to an "Open Mic" Night and showcase their talents as Callers and Cuers before they compete at the Pacific Northwest Teen Square Dance Festival (PNTSDF) weekend (held in May this year in Washington). Ian Craig will be the host Caller MC, and Julia Buchheit will be the Cuer MC as the Silver City Squares youth rehearse their planned calls and cues to a live audience. Come join us and show your support by wishing them success.

Happy Feet,

Betty Chipps

The door opens at 6 PM with a snack bar available and games begin promptly at 7 PM. Children are welcome, if well attended by their parents/grandparents.

Don't miss a chance to dance to Andy Allemao, a great national caller, and our own Tami Helms, as cuer at our Spring Fling Dance, May 10-12, 2024. Great chance to dance to a great caller without a lot of travel or motel expenses!

The crazy winter weather forced us to postpone our world-famous Black and White Ball originally scheduled for January 13. But with sufficient notice from the forecasters, we were able to reschedule for the following Saturday, January 20. If you are an eager reader of these pages, you might see this in time to come dance to Seattle sensation Stephen Cole. You need not wear black and white, but it’s always fun to see the various creative ways that these two contrasting colors can be combined.

Our next series of Social Square Dance lessons started Wednesday, January 17, at Bridgeport United Church of Christ, 621 NE 76th Ave, Portland 97213. New dancers are welcome to start on January 24, too. Our lessons continue every Wednesday from 7-8:30 pm until the last Wednesday in April. The first two lessons are free, to give potential dancers a chance to try before they buy. If you know anyone on Portland’s eastside who seems like a good candidate for dance lessons, send them our way!

We are thrilled to announce that Michael Kellogg will be returning to call our 41st Anniversary Dance on February 10. Our theme is Roses and Rainbows, and Michael is one of the best callers in the business. This is going to be a really fun evening, with Advanced dancing from 4-6 and Social Square Dance and Plus from 7-9:30. Last year we had seven squares—can we top that number in 2024?

Hope to see many of you in Albany for Mid-Winter Festival.

For those looking way ahead, we are delighted to announce the return of our fall square dance festival, Scares and Squares. This year, our three-day event will take place the second weekend in October (corresponding to our regular dance weekend), so no conflict with Seaside Sashay! Our featured callers are Hunter Keller and Eric Henerlau. We’ll be dancing all levels from Social Square Dance to C-2. Check out rosetownramblers.com or the flyer under Special Dances on this site for details and registration materials.

The Stars had a great turnout for their Annual New Year’s Eve dance and celebration of the New Year at midnight on New York Time or 9pm Pacific Time. The caller and cuer were mysteries again this year, but turned out to be Mike Haworth and his lovely wife Heather.

We started a new Square Dance 101 class (SSD) on January 8. There were 21 new students and with all the angels, 5 squares on the floor. We certainly hope this is a good omen of things to come.

Janet Geiger was sick and unable to call the SSD Dance on January 5, 2024 – Phil Ramey stepped up and called the dance.

The Stars had their Annual Black and White Dance on January 13, 2024 with Phil Ramey calling and Elaine Funk cueing. There was a good turnout, considering the weather.

A good many of the Stars, new dancers included, are planning to go to Midwinter Festival on January 26, 27 & 28. We don’t want to miss dancing to Jet Roberts.

The Valentine’s Dance on February 10 will have Rikki Lobatocueing the rounds for us.

The Stars are also preparing for a big bash on February 24 – the 67th Birthday of the club. The caller will be Tim and Bev Oren Pepper.will be the cuer.

The TVC did not hold a meeting in December. The next TVC Meeting will be held in person on Monday, January 22nd, 2024, at the Hillsboro IOOF Hall in Hillsboro. This is our annual President’s Potluck and Meeting. Potluck at 6 pm, Meeting at 7. This annual meeting is held to honor current and past club Presidents of the TVC clubs. All TVC club Presidents & dancers are invited to join us. At this meeting TVC President Dale Brabham will announce the recipient of the Tualatin Valley Council “Recognition Award”. This award is for outstanding service and special contribution to the square dance community within the TVC geographical area.

The TVC New Year’s Eve Dance at the IOOF Hall in Hillsboro featuring Darrell Kalmbach calling with Tami Helms cueing was successful. What a great way to start the new year.

The Council highly recommends that all TVC dancers attend the anniversary dances held by other member clubs. On Saturday, February 24th the Hoedowners will celebrate their 74th Anniversary at the Aloha Grange with Randy Dibble calling and Randy Lewis cueing. A chicken dinner will follow the dance. See their flyer with the Hoedowner club report below.

It is with a heavy heart that I must tell you that one of my TVC OFN reporters, Bob Allen, died on Christmas day. He was very committed to square dancing. He lived in Garibaldi and danced regularly in Tillamook, Warrenton, and Aloha. He had been the President of Wavesteppers for many years and was my reporter for them. Over the past 12 years he never missed an in-person TVC meeting and attended most of the TVC sponsored dances. He was my friend and I will miss him. RIP Robert Lee Allen - 86 7/12/1936 - 12/25/2023

Nine squares! New Year’s eve saw that many squares on the floor at our Manor Grange dance. Adam Christman and Craig Abercrombie called and cued. I can not think of a local dance that l attended since COVID that had that number in attendance. There may have been some, but l missed them. Many thanks to all the club members who came and brought goodies for our guests.

Now comes February and ground hog day and post Valentine’s day. Our great caller, in my humble opinion, Daryl Clendenin is calling both on the second and the sixteenth.

We are also continuing our beginner’s class and mainstream class. We have experienced a growth in members as a result of the classes and the friendly atmosphere or older members create. It is a pleasure to be associated with all of them.

The Eager Beavers had a nice turnout for our Christmas Dance on December 18th. We were dark on Christmas Day, December 25th as well as New Years Day, January 1st because they fell on a Monday. These are the only Mondays of the year that the Eager Beavers are dark except for weather related closures.

We are excited to be starting our Plus lessons on Monday, February 5th from 12:00 noon to 1:15pm with Darrell Kalmbach instructing. Our regular dances during the lesson series will be from 1:15 to 3:00, and students are welcome to stay for the first tip which will be called at their level. Anyone who is a plus dancer who is looking for brush-up is invited to attend lessons and stay for the entire dance for the cost of the lesson.

We were saddened to learn of the passing of long-time member Bob Allen on Christmas day, who traveled 150 miles round trip from Garibaldi every Monday to dance with us. Our condolences to his family and friends..

Only a few people knew that he was an avid beekeeper who had served on the Oregon State Beekeepers Association Board for 20 years and at one time had upwards of 200 hives.

Quiet, unassuming, always ready to dance, Bob will be missed.

In March the Hayshakers will start another series of Mainstream lessons. We’ve chosen Sunday March 10th, the first day of Daylight Savings time.

Hoedowners - Link
For the Hoedowners, December was here and gone in a twinkle. We only hosted one dance as our second scheduled dance was interfering with Christmas celebrations. It was a special dance on December 9th because we invited our new dancers to join in a dance and jamboree. It worked out perfectly with Terry Halley and Randy Lewis charming as usual.

The ballroom was especially festive with the Christmas wreaths lining the walls and the 10-foot, beautifully lit tree. The Aloha Grange has added new holiday lighting with garlands lining the stage and hung over the entry. Somehow the mirror ball adds just the right amount of twinkle. We served holiday treats and nibbles with holiday punch.

What lies in store for 2024? The Hoedowners Anniversary Dance on February 24th with Randy Dibble calling. We will be serving a chicken dinner after the dance. Whoo, see you then.

Oak Hills Squares - Link
The Oak Hills Squares have seen lots of activity this winter! December ended our fall lessons and the mainstream dancers have had fun with a few new calls. Mark Wheeler always keeps us smiling, especially with his "singing calls" during the holiday season when he belted out some funny lyrics.

Our Christmas Dance on December 18th was a big success with festive costumes, lights, and bright decorations. All members brought yummy treats to share for our social time between tips. After the Holiday Dance Sharon and Tony invited members of the club to their home to extend the celebration. Those of us who went to their home for cider and cookies had a wonderful time conversing and getting to know one another more personally.

Several members joined carpools for other dances and attended the New Year's Eve Dance in Hillsboro.

As of this writing, we look forward to welcoming new dancers with lessons beginning January 15th.

R Square D - Link
December was a fun month for R Square D. Our “Sounds of the Season” dance on December 8th was called by Craig Abercrombie and cued by Susan Healea with an abundance of holiday music. We had visitors from at least eight clubs dancing with us that night! Our annual Christmas party on the 18th took the place of our December meeting. A delicious meal was followed by a fun gift exchange that evening.

R Square D will host two dances in February, both called by Craig and cued by Susan. February 9th is a “Pre-Super Bowl” dance and will feature a chili feed after the dance. “Winter Doldrums” dance on the 24th is meant to escape those doldrums by dancing the night away!

By now our lessons that started in January are underway on Wednesday evenings, with the Plus class at 6:30 PM and the beginning lessons at 7:30. We are thankful for angels who help support the lessons!

In December our lessons for the Two-Step and Mainstream-Part 1 ended on the third. We had two dances, "Rat Pack Reflections" (Frank Sinatra-type theme) on the 8th and "Sounds of the Season" on the 22nd, both with our caller Terry Halley and cuer Sandra Pinion. Her little guy Henry always tags along and enjoys the music. We had another great Christmas party at the Royal Panda in Tualatin, with more crazy white-elephant-gifts exchanged and lots of great Chinese food going around on the lazy Susans. (Note to self: Go there more than once a year.)

In February our lessons for Mainstream-Part 2 do continue every Sunday afternoon at our grange in Kinton, along with Plus lessons, both taught by Terry Halley. Plus is at 2:00-3:15, and Mainstream at 3:30-5:30. We have a Valentine's dance "Love Notes" on February 9th with Terry and Sandra, at 7:00 for Plus and Rounds, and 7:30-9:30 Mainstream, Rounds, and 3rd tip Plus. Then our big anchor-dance the "Mardi Gras Masquerade Ball!" is on the 23rd, with Terry and Sandra, (same dance hours) and we hope you'll join us for it, all costumed-up if you like! Let's chase this winter away with a little Mardi Gras fun!

Wave Steppers - Link
Long time Wavesteppers member Bob Allen died on Christmas Day. Bob was the current Vice President and immediate past President of the club. He was also the Wavesteppers TVC OFN reporter. Not much is known at this time. He was fine Christmas eve having attended church with another dancer and then candlelight services that evening. He sang with the choir and then went to Denny's for a bite to eat after. He seemed to be in good spirits and was talking about the new caller he had found. RIP my friend.

Our new club caller is Anthony Egan and our dance venue is the Tillamook Senior Center, 316 Stillwell Avenue. Located on the corner of 4th and Stillwell there is no on site parking and little street parking. The huge Tillamook Coliseum Theater parking lot is directly across the street. Our dances are held weekly on Tuesdays from 4:00 to 6:00.
