March 2024

A publication of the Oregon Federation of Square and Round Dance Clubs

Printed 20 March 2024
President's Corner

Welcome to spring! Or at least it should be close.

As we are gearing up for traveling to some of the spring and summer festivals and conventions please make sure you are ready for travel.

If you don’t usually travel much or make big purchases on your credit card, make sure that you contact your bank ahead of time to let them know that you will be traveling and where so that they don’t block you trying to pay for your hotel room.

If you are traveling internationally, check your phone service and see what you need to do to still receive and make calls (provided you want to stay in touch locally while you are gone). Also you can order currency from your bank for the country you are going to ahead of time.

Something to know as you are going to larger dances is the Emergency Call for Medical Aid.

  1. When a dancer goes down, one other dancer in the square will attend to the injured dancer.
  2. The other dancers will back up in a circle, to give the injured and attending dancer room and air.
  3. The remaining dancers will lift their hands into an arch, known as the Emergency Call For Medical Aid (ECMA) formation.
  4. Upon seeing this, the caller or hall monitor will place an Emergency Call For Medical Aid; summoning paramedics, etc. If this does not occur, a dancer should run to the stage to alert the caller, or those in charge, so the proper authorities can be summoned as quickly as possible.

If you don’t feel well while in a square or just can’t finish the tip, signal to a dancer watching who isn’t dancing for them to come take your place. Or if you know that you are likely to have to have someone replace you – make sure that you make arrangements with another dancer before you head out onto the floor. Don’t just leave the square without a dancer if you can avoid it.

See you at a dance soon.
Karyn Buchheit

Federation Meetings

At the January 27 Federation meeting, the slate of officers for 2024-25 was announced. The Federation is now doing revolving multi-year terms, so not every office is elected every year. Your club Secretaries should be getting a ballot link via email before the end of February.

You will find brief biographies of all of the candidates in this document.

The next Federation meeting will be hosted by the South Coast Area Council, and will be held at the Beachcomber's Barn in Port Orford on April 26, 2024.

Mid-Winter

Thank you to everyone who came, danced and had a great time. We had an amazing 802 dancers there. Also a huge thank you to all the callers, cuers and committee who gave so selflessly of their time and efforts to make it a fantastic event. We even made it on TV. Check out Kezi Eugene to see the replay. Now the committee is going to turn to Dancing Around the World in 2025 with an international crew of talent. If you haven't pre registered yet, be on the lookout for flyers. There will also be t-shirts available for sale. Looking forward to seeing all of you and more in 2025!

We are pleased to report that the recipients of the 2024 Randall Award are Roger and Linda Putzler. Congratulations to a couple that has done so much for our activity.

Summer Festival

"Sashay to Salem 2024" will be held at Blanchet Catholic School in Salem on July 12 to 14, 2024. Click here to get your registration form.

The countdown to summer festival is on. July will be here before we know it. I wanted to introduce our featured caller to you. Most of you have probably never heard of Jason Raleigh out of Ohio. Let me tell you, you are in for a treat. Jason has been calling for over 25 years. He calls beginners to A2. He also yodels. Jason has a lovely wife and 3 young boys that all square dance and are joining him on his journey out west. Fun fact he has never been to the pacific coast before, so he is looking forward to spending some time out here when they come. Jason just recently joined the staff of Riverboat recordings. He has performed at dances, festivals, conventions, one night parties and even with the symphony orchestra in Lima. Make sure you get your ribbons to come join us and hear this amazing performer!

Cascade Callers & Cuers Assoc
In January a former members of CCCA, Leonard Snodgrass, passed away. We were stunned to learn that he was gone so suddenly. He was scheduled to cue at Mid-Winter.  Leonard was the caller for Braids and Braves and the cuer for Valley River Dancers.  He was a member of the Oregon Round Dance Teachers Association along with his partner Josie Rosenbury. We send our thoughts and prayers to Josie and to Leonard's family.

Ivan Koehn was also a former member of CCCA who had passed away in January.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife, Donna Koehn, and his family. Ivan called and taught for Whirl-A-ways for 40 years. Ivan was a special person who made a difference.  We miss both Leonard and Ivan.

Our next CCCA dance is scheduled for March 30. Our dances are held on fifth Saturdays.  June and August have fifth Saturdays as does November. We have a short business meeting before our dances. 7:00 is Pre-Rounds and then 7:30 to 9:30 is our square and round dance. The dances are called and cued by members of CCCA.

Respectively submitted,

Christina Corelli

We danced only once in January as our dance scheduled for the 21st had to be cancelled due to the ice storm which caused power outages throughout parts of Springfield. We are on for our dance on Feb. 11 and hope to dance on Feb. 25 as well if we can get enough dancers to commit to that date. We will try for two dances in March as well on the 3rd and 24th. We are looking forward to having a live caller, Terri Sherrer from Palm Springs, CA, on April 14. We normally dance to recorded tips so this will be a special event and we hope others will come in from other areas to join us.

We dance at the Emerald Square Dance Center at 2095 Yolanda in Springfield from 1:30 to 3:30PM in Hall B behind the center. Our dress is casual always. The schedule posted on our website at cas-sd.yolasite.com is tentative only. Fred Beise gets a head count of who is committed to dance on any given date, and if we don’t have enough we cancel. If you plan to attend, please let Fred know

Three CAS members went to Mid-Winter Festival in January and had a blast dancing to all the fine callers that Erin and Darrell Kalmbach lined up for us. We thank all of those who did so much work to put together this fine festival for us all to enjoy. On a side note we were pleased to see so many younger dancers at the festival. Cast A Shadows donated $200 towards scholarships to help teens afford to come dance for this special weekend. Any money not used this year will be set aside to help teens attend next year.

Single Trees - Link
We had only one dance in January. On January 6, a Saturday not our regular dance night, we held a New Dancer Dance. We had to cancel our regularly scheduled dance on Jan. 19 because of the ice storm and the subsequent power outage in Springfield. We, of course, went dark Jan. 26 because that was Mid-Winter Festival. Quite a few Single Trees attended the MWF this year and had a great time as always. We were all pleased to hear attendance was up despite the horrible weather during the middle part of January. It was a great relief to be able to dance the last weekend of the month and through off the winter doldrums.

In February, we sadly learned that our longest living Life Time member Angi Barta who had joined Single Trees in 1969, had passed away while living in assisted living. Over the years she had served on the Single Trees board in several capacities and even when she stopped dancing continued to come and help out on the front desk. Our thoughts go out to her family. Her long time life partner Alan Pritchard preceded her in death.

We are hoping in February that we’ll have a good turnout for our 60th birthday dance Feb. 16. Being so close to Valentine’s Day it will be a sweetheart themed dance. Please wear red or pink with white. The next dance Feb. 23rd will have a Chinese New Year’s theme and I am sure both dances will be decorated to the hilt by our vice president, Melba Walker, and her sister, our president, Joy Pitts. These two enjoy decorating as much as they do dancing. In March we will dance on the 3rd and 4th Fridays as usual. We start our dances with 15 minutes of pre-rounds at 7:;30PM and then one plus tip at 7:45. Mainstream starts at 8 with rounds in between tips and every third tip plus. Please come join us and dance to our guest callers (see the OFN's where and when for specific dates). We hope we will see Jackie Gale return to cue for us on the 4th Fridays starting in March.

See you in a square,

Gaynor Hintz

We dance every Sunday but had to cancel most of our January dances due to the weather and no power at the hall during and after the ice storms mid-month. Our caller, Tim Matteson, had been under the weather so he has had time to recuperate. We are looking forward to dancing in February every Sunday.

Please call our president, David Lajoie at 541-520-7311 to make sure we are, indeed, dancing.  January was a freak month weather-wise, that's for sure.

Whirl-A-Ways
We started out the new year with some sad news.  Former caller, Ivan Koehn, had been on hospice a couple of months and passed away January 18.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to Donna, his wife, and their family. He called and taught new dancer classes for 40 years for us before he retired.  A lot of Whirl-A-Ways dancers learned from Ivan.  We all have fond memories of both him and Donna.  They were very active with Whirl-A-Ways and made a difference.

Former Whirl-A-Ways dancer, Lyle Oswald passed away January 15 from Alzheimer's and a heart condition.  His wife, Earlene, said he still had that mischievous smile right up to the end.  They had moved to Idaho three years ago to be near Earlene's family.  They had no family left here in Oregon.   The Whirl-A-Ways were their family and all of us remember, with much fondness, the mischievous antics of Lyle who will be missed.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to Earlene and his family.

The Whirl-A-Ways have made the decision to hold a dance only once a month on the second with the exception of July and August.  We start dancing at 7 with plus for half an hour, and then Mainstream and Rounds from 7:30 to10:00.

We invite all dancers to join us at the dance center in Springfield on the second Saturdays.  We did have to cancel our January dances due to icy conditions and an extended power outage.

Our February 17 Dance was called by a brand-new caller, Shaun McKamey from Dallas. This was his very first dance as a caller. Other callers may also be auditioning on future dates, due to the passing of our beloved Leonard.

We are all saddened about the passing of our club caller, Leonard Snodgrass. We spent many evenings enjoying his patter, singing, and yodeling. Our March 16 dance will be in memory of Leonard. Mainstream and rounds will be 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., with Bruce Lowther as MC and callers and curers from the floor. Sandra Pinion will also be cueing. Then at 9:00 p.m. everyone will meet downstairs at the McMinnville Grange for refreshments and sharing memories of Leonard. Come and join us.

Lessons went very well under the excellent instruction of Bruce Lowther and Judy Russell. We welcomed nine newly minted dancers into our club at graduation on February 6.

Usually, we dance on the second and fourth Saturday of each month, but in March we will be dark, except for the dance on the beach. In April, we dance April 13 and 20 at the Congregational Church, 4515 SW West Hills Rd, Corvallis, from 7:00 to 9:30 pm.

If you see this in time, come celebrate at our Birthday Dance February 24 at the time and place above.

We had two great dances in the month of January. We had lots to dance to in preparation for attending Mid-Winter Festival. There were many of us in attendance at the Festival.

The club graduated nine students in conjunction with Willamette Squares. They enjoyed a potluck before graduation.

The first February dance saw a guest caller, Terry Halley, take Daryl’s place for the evening. Daryl had a family medical situation to take care of. Hope things are OK with all.

Daryl will start mainstream lessons on February 25 at 1:00 p.m. We hope to see many return dancers to brush up on the moves and bring along some new dancers who want to share in the enthusiasm this last class showed. There is always room for more on the dance floor.

The slow two step and cha classes will be finished before this article is printed. They have all done well and learned lots. We will start Fox Trot on February 15. We have no clue how many will show up, but we are hoping for new and returning dancers to join us.

We have raised our door prices for our Thursdays. $6.00 for class only and $8 if you come and stay for the entire evening.

The phase 2 waltz class will start on February 25 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. at the Salem Square Dance Center. There is room for many dancers so we will see who returns and if there are any newcomers to join us.

The cha class put ten youth dancers in a demo during the Showcase of Rounds at Mid-Winter. They showed well and were received by the audience in attendance with much appreciation for their efforts.

We have our fundraiser dance for our youth on February 24. We will also draw our cash raffle and quilt raffle winners there. Please come join us if you can. A Flyer is available. Terry Halley has agreed to fill in as Caller MC.

We have over fifty youth planning on going to the Pacific Northwest Teen Square Dance Festival. We have two Senior Level Squares (Plus), four Junior Level Squares and one Pre-Teen Level Square. We have ten callers and five cuers. Two Intermediate Round Couples will be doing Cha and Waltz, seven Junior (Basic) Round Couples (2-Step and Waltz), and four Novice Round Couples (2-Step and Waltz). We are practicing two times a week for two hours each time, though we do seem to go overtime for those who want and are able to stay longer. The Festival will be at Auburn Mt. View High School in Auburn, Washington, the first weekend in May.

Hope to see you at a dance soon!

Thanks to all the Mask’uerading MidWinter chairs and crew - I thoroughly enjoyed Scott Bennnett and Jet Roberts. I kept hearing other folks say they were so very fun too.

Chaps and Petticoats will do something different and exciting in the month of March. On Friday, March 15th - the Chaps and Petticoats have invited the Silverton youth to come to an "Open Mic" Night and 'showcase' their talents as Callers / Cuers before they compete at the Pacific Northwest Teen Square Dance Festival (PNTSDF) weekend (held in May this year in Washington). Silver City Squares youth will rehearse their planned calls and cues to a live audience at Maplewood Grange. Come join us and show your support by wishing them success.

On Friday, April 5th, Scott Zinser and Mark McDonald, will call and cue at our HIPPIE Dance. This is a costume dance and those in attendance will cast their vote to choose Male, female and couple winners.. There will be a photo opportunity in front of the 10-ft tall ‘peace’ prop too. On April 19th, Mike Kious and Connie Clark will call and cue for the Chaps and Petticoats..

Rosetown Ramblers - Link
Notwithstanding our best efforts, we ended up having to cancel our annual Black and White Ball in January. Our caller for this dance, Seattle sensation Stephen Cole, worked hard with us to try to pull off the dance, but the ice at the Oak Grove Community Center was simply too persistent. To assuage your disappointment, we are thrilled to announce that Stephen has agreed to call our June 8 dance—so lemonade from lemons!

We celebrated our 41st anniversary on February 10 with our usual Ramblers gusto. We welcomed seven squares to dance to the marvelous Michael Kellogg. We had visitors from almost all the Portland area clubs, Salem, Seattle, Eugene, and Oakland and Los Angeles, CA. Our theme was Roses and Rainbows. Notwithstanding February’s reputation as a bleak month, our door prizes highlighted the month’s many charms: recognizing lunar new year, Valentine’s Day, and the Super Bowl—all happening within a period of four days.

Our breathtaking 2024 continues on March 9 with dynamic Darren Gallina coming up from Southern California to make his Ramblers debut. Darren is a hugely popular caller and musician. His pop star patter tips are legendary among the square dance cognoscenti. You’ll not want to miss this dance at Oak Grove. Advanced dancing from 4-6 pm, followed by alternating SSD and Plus tips from 7-9:30.

Our next series of Social Square Dance lessons, at Bridgeport United Church of Christ, 621 NE 76th Ave, Portland 97213, was delayed by one week due to the tenacity of the ice in east Portland. But we finally kicked off the lessons with free tastes on January 24 and 31. We’ll continue every Wednesday from 7-8:30 pm until the last Wednesday in April. We’ll graduate our class on May 11.

For those looking way ahead, we have opened registration for our fall square dance festival, Scares and Squares. This year, our three-day event will take place the second weekend in October (corresponding to our regular dance weekend), so no conflict with Seaside Sashay! Our featured callers are Hunter Keller and Eric Henerlau. We’ll be dancing all levels from Social Square Dance to C-2. Check out rosetownramblers.com or the flyer under Special Dances on this site for details and registration materials. If you register during February, we will honor the $70 registration rate for the full weekend. Registration goes up to $80 March 1.

We had a couple of fun dances in February, low on attendance, but we always have a great time. Our dances in March should be lots of fun. We have dances on 3/2, 3/8 and 3/16. Flyers are on the OFN and our website. We are really looking forward to our annual Boatnik Festival during Memorial Day weekend with David & Dawn Mee as our featured talent. The dancers are still talking about their trip to Mid Winter in January. The newer dancers had a blast, right along with the rest of us. The Stars had a great time at their 67the Birthday Dance. The caller and cuer were Tim and Bev Oren Pepper.

The new Square Dance 101 class ( SSD) that started on January 8 still has 21 new students and everyone is having a great time learning the Nation’s official dance.

The Valentine’s Dance on February 10 had Rikki Lobato cueing the rounds for us. It was a great time. She always does a good job. The Stars will be dark for the March 9 dance to give the dancers a chance to go to Roseburg and support the “Luck of the Umpqua” plus weekend with Doug Davis, Dan Preedy and Rikki Lobato. On March 23, the Stars will celebrate the “Teddy Bear” Parade and help out the Sheriff’s Department of Jackson County with stuffed animals for the kids in stressful situations.

The January meeting was be held in person on the 22nd, 2024, at the Hillsboro IOOF Hall in Hillsboro. It was our annual President’s Potluck and Meeting. At that meeting TVC President Dale Brabham announced the recipient of the Tualatin Valley Council “Recognition Award”. This award is for outstanding service and special contribution to the square dance community within the TVC geographical area. The TVC Recognition Award for 2023 was presented to Nadine Collett on behalf of her and Frank. Sadly, Frank passed away last March.

The next Council event will be the Tri-Council Dance on March 30th. It will be held at the Aloha Grange and will feature the calling and cueing of Randy Dibble and Randy Lewis. The dance will begin at 7PM and continue until 9:30PM.

The Council highly recommends that all TVC dancers attend the anniversary dances held by other member clubs. On March 9th the Columbia River Dancers will celebrate their 9th Anniversary. The dance will be at Manor Grange, 17901 NE 72nd Ave, Battle Ground, WA featuring the calling and cueing of Adam Christman. It will begin at 7:00 and continue until 9:30pm with Mainstream and every third tip Plus. Since the OFN is published about the 20th of the month, you still have time to plan on attending the Hoedowners 74th Anniversary on the 24th at the Aloha Grange with Randy Dibble calling and Randy Lewis cueing.

Nine years ago a group of square dancers decided to begin a new club. We set our goals to have fun dancing, be inclusive so everyone danced and not be burdened by lots of committees and regulations. This month we will dance to our great caller, Daryl Clendenin on both the first and the fifteenth. Our goals have not changed. We still invite everyone to dance with us and try to make sure everyone has a good time.

On March 9th we will celebrate our 9th Anniversary. The dance will be at Manor Grange and feature the calling and cueing of Adam Christman. It will begin at 7:00 and continue until 9:30pm with Mainstream and every third tip Plus. Should be a rocking good time.

We are excited to have begun a new dancers class and had six squares of new and returning dancers for lessons. We have enough dancers from our last class that have changed times for our mainstream class in order to insure they get enough floor time. We now are teaching mainstream from 5-6 PM on Sunday and beginners from 6-8. Rene Ruud is helping Daryl as he helps her to become a caller.

At the end of January the club had over 20 members meet for dinner at the Sizzler in Albany as we all enjoyed the Oregon Winter Fest. The club would like to give a big Shout-Out for the great dance.

Do come join us. We dance at the Manor Grange. Just take exit nine off the I-5 and go east three miles.

The Eager Beavers were dark on New Year’s Day and had to cancel one of our January dances due to weather. We were not alone as many other clubs had to cancel as well. So, in a very unusual month we only held three dances of the five Mondays in January.

We did hold a dance the Monday after the Mid-Winter Festival. We had about a third of our club at MidWinter and all of them were at the Monday dance some of us a little tired from the weekend.

In March we will have a Black and White dance on Monday, March 4th and we are looking forward to our 49th Anniversary on April 15th. Please plan on joining us.

Oak Hills Squares Club members missed one another in January! With New Year's, followed by two weeks of "Snowmageddon", the club missed several weeks of dancing. Finally, on January 22nd we were eager to see one another. Dance lessons had been advertised in the previous month and we had a wonderful turnout for our first time back dancing in 2024. The Newbies learned several moves quickly; before you knew it, angels and newbies laughed and had fun dancing together. New Dancers could join classes through February 4th and we'd like to add new club members as lessons proceed.

At this writing, the club plans a Valentine's themed dance with some decorations and treats brought by all.

R Square D had no dances in January – we had to cancel the dance scheduled for the 12th, due to icy roads and extremely cold temperatures. We were dark on January 27th for Mid-Winter Festival and were happy to hear festival attendance was very good.

Our caller, Craig Abercrombie, will be in Arizona the whole month of March in order to attend Mariners’ spring training games, so we have guest callers that month. Melissa James will call on March 8th and Jim Raupp will call our March 23rd dance. Susan Healea will cue both of these dances.

There were no students for beginning lessons in early January, so Craig is teaching Plus at 6:30 on Wednesday evenings and is calling Mainstream dancing/workshop from7:30 to 9:00. This will be our lessons schedule through the end of February and will likely continue on Craig’s return in April.

In January we started mainstream lessons for new dancers. We have 14 new dancers .. so fun!! Our Wild West Dance with chili and cornbread on January 6th was well attended. The TVC President's potluck was held on Jan 22nd at or lodge and was well attended.

We are very sad to have lost Shelley Sohriakoff, one of our members on January 25th who passed after a long illness. We send out prayers to her husband Jim and their family.

Due to the big snow and ice storm in January, our Cowboy-B51 dance on the 12th had to be cancelled, along with our lessons on the 14th. But lessons continued the next week, with 10 Plus students and 13 in Mainstream. Due to Midwinter our second dance was dark. Thirteen of our members and two students attended Midwinter this year.

In March we begin with a Zoom Board Meeting on the 4th, during which we're setting our calendar for next year to get ready for contract-signing with the grange. We're having final Plus and Mainstream lessons on the 3rd and 10th, with graduation on the 17th. We're visiting the Valley Squares on the 16th. And our two dances both with Terry Halley calling and Sandra Pinion cueing are: March 8th, "Wearin' O' the Green" and March 22nd, the "Spring It Forward!" dance during which we will be collecting donations again for the Good Neighbor Center, a shelter for homeless families in Tigard. (For their "Needs List" please see gncnw.org.) And boy, does "spring" sound really good right now!
