Welcome to April.
SUNSHINE!!! Isn’t it great to see longer patches of sunshine and warmer weather? Does anyone else have a case of Spring Fever? I just want to sit in the sun and do nothing!
As we get a chance to get outside and do some of the outdoor upkeep of our halls, please pay attention to possible hazard spots. Our hall is way out in farmland, but we still need to make sure that we have bushes cut back, hall entry cleared, driveways have good vision and lights are working. Since we are back on Daylight Savings Time, we still have light as we arrive at a dance, but it is still dark when we are ready to go home. We need to make walking to and from the cars and hall as safe and easy as possible. All halls have different difficulties – take a look at your hall and see where it might need a bit of help to help our visitors and club members.
There are still a lot of dances available before some of our clubs start taking their summer breaks. Many of us have gotten into the habit of only looking at the flyers on the OFN. Is there someone in your club who might be able to print out various flyers and put them on your club’s bulletin board. As a dancer visiting other clubs – it is fun to look at the bulletin board and see what might be coming up – especially if I’m at a club outside my own council. Don’t forget, many of our newer dancers are not used to checking the OFN. We can start them looking at bulletin boards and then get them looking at the OFN.
Have someone from your club keep the “Where and When” updated so others know if you are dancing for a particular night. If you are looking at going out – check the “Where and When” first and then, if you still aren’t sure – call the contact number to double check. Is there someone at your club who could print this out and put on the bulletin board at your hall each month to help those who don’t have internet see what is out there?
Enjoy the spring weather!!!

In June of 2023, I departed Oregon for what should have been a two year commitment, serving as a science education volunteer to Liberia, West Africa, in the Peace Corps. In February, I received medical separation for a condition I developed that was caused by the heat and humidity. The medical team I was working with determined they could not treat me in a way for me to be able to live comfortably and this was the best course of action. This was not an easy decision as I did miss the people here in Oregon, but I would also be leaving my friends that I was working alongside with in Liberia. I returned to Oregon on February 20th. I regret nothing about my adventures and am happy to be home. If people have questions about what I did or see in Africa, feel free to come up to me at a square dance. For now, I will be working with my club the Silver City Squares to help prepare the kids for the competition in May. I shall see you all in a square at some point.

We will have a live caller on April 14, named Terri Sherrer. We are hoping for a great turnout. Hope to see you join us some Sunday from 1:30 to 3:30 in Hall B of the Emerald Square Dance Center in Springfield on 20th and Yolanda. If you are new look for Hall B on the backside of the building. We normally dance on the 2nd and 4th Sundays, but please be sure to always call Fred Beisse at 458-221-3564 to make sure we are dancing as some times we do not get a square and have to cancel a dance. Check the OFN or our website at cas-sd.yola.site for a list of the dates we plan on dancing. You can also ask Fred to be added to his email list so you can keep advised.
See you in a square soon,

We held two great dances in February. The first was our birthday dance with Craig Abercrombie calling and also cueing. We had five squares of dancers, some were local but many came from down in Roseburg and elsewhere. What a fun time we had dancing to Craig’s calling and cueing. There was lots of red or pink and white on the floor as our theme was Sweetheart of a 60th Birthday Dance. Yes, we finally hit the big 6-0. See the photo in the photo section of the dancers that came that night and had the pleasure of seeing and talking to our former caller Dale Roberson who came with his wife Betty to wish us well. What a treat that was. There was birthday cake and lots of door prizes. The hall was decorated by our Vice President Melba Walker who loves to decorate and plan the themes with the help of some members. Our second dance was called by K.C. Curtis and cued by Sandy Harris. We are always delighted to have K.C. join us. Look for him on our calendar in the OFN in the coming months.
On Mar. 22 in case this edition get published early you might want to make a note that Darrell Kalmbach is calling and Jackie Gale is cueing the 4th Friday dance with a spring theme.
In April 19 Single Trees will host a Tax Troubles and Woes/Hobo Stew Night with Craig Abercrombie calling and cueing. On April 26 we will have K.C. Curtis and Christina Corelli calling and cueing “Under the Big Top”. All clowns are welcome, says Joy Pitts, our president.
We dance from 7:30 to 10:00, starting with 15 minutes of pre-rounds, 15 minutes of plus and then at 8 we do mainstream with every 3rd tip plus with rounds in between tips.--at least that is the format we would like but at times our callers and cuers decide differently. Go with the flow. It’s all fun at Single Trees.
See you in a square soon.

Please come and join us from 4 to 6 on Sundays. It is casual dress always. Please call our president, David Lajoie at 541-520-7311 to make sure we are, indeed, dancing. We are dark March 17.

Roger Putzler has graciously offered to step in and call for us for as many dances as he is available. He and Linda do spend time traveling each year which is healthy and a lot of fun for the both of them. Roger teaches the square dance lessons here. Roger also along with me runs and calls for the Buccaneers Mainstream and Plus dances the first and second Fridays. Roger was awarded his 50-year certificate for calling from Callerlab. Roger started dancing when he was three as his mom owned and operated a dance studio in Chicago. He learned to square dance and call at age ten.
Several Whirl-A-Ways had a chance to go for pizza before one of our dances. That was a lot of fun. And, a lot of Single Trees dancers came to visit that evening too. Thank you Single Trees for supporting us. We will do the same.
We dance on the second Saturday of each month with the exception of July and August. We dance plus at 7:00 and then Mainstream and Rounds from 7:30 – 10:00.
We invite all dancers to join us at the dance center in Springfield on the second Saturdays.
Christina Corelli
The dance is on March 30 at 7:30 pm.
We will also welcome Thomas Buchheit home from West Africa. He is home early from his Peace Corps assignment due to heat related issues. He misses his friends there already.
Currently there are eight to ten of our members who are practicing the "art of cueing" in the event we need someone to give our great cuers/instructors a well-deserved break, or in case of emergency. It is NOT as easy as the current cuers make it appear! The dates for our demos will be available for the next council meeting and newsletter.

Special thanks, also, goes to the Lebanon Square Circlers, Timber Twirlers, and Sweet Home Serenaders, who joined us for our 65th Birthday Dance (old enough for Medicare), making five squares. We were pleased to even see some of our students. The event was even more festive by the efforts of Juan for a beautiful cake, Barb for the bouquet of flowers, and Charlotte, Carol, and Julie for inspiration and for creating the game of Pinning the Badge on the Dancers. Not to be forgotten, our table was full of treats thanks to members bringing all kinds of good things to eat. Since we had our Beach Retreat in March at Gleneden Beach, we did not dance at the Church in March. Join us April 13 for Spring Dance at Church with Sandy Harris. We are also having a plant sale at Sue’s house that day.
The popular International Butterfly Dance is May 11, which focuses on the preservation of butterflies, with caller Craig Abercrombie. Wear your most colorful outfit. May 25 dance honors Veterans with caller Charlotte Jeskey and cuer Sandy Harris.
Corvallis Squares dance at the Congregational Church, 4515 South Hills Road, Corvallis, OR, 7 to 9:30 p.m., second and fourth Saturdays unless we are dark. See us in the Oregon Federation News

We have also lost a fairly new member, Alice Baldwin on March 1. She passed away at her son’s home in Yamhill after being placed on Hospice comfort care a couple of weeks before. She leaves behind her husband Paul, a son and two daughters.
Our first dance in March saw KC Curtis as the guest caller, and he put some youth callers on stage. Benjamin and Noah Rudolph will be participating in the Pacific Northwest Teen Square Dance Festival in May. Kaylia Avila did one round dance as she will also be participating in the Festival. Good luck to all.
Roger Putzler (Linda) was our guest caller for our 64th birthday dance on March 9. He is a former club caller and was welcomed by many for the fun event.
The club is gearing up for the annual Koast Krash at the end of April in Yachats. A full weekend of resting, exploring the community, and eating. We will also be solving a mystery dinner, with the club members involved in the murder plot and figuring out who did it.

Plans are in the works for a party dance in May, celebrating spring (if it ever arrives), and no lessons that night.
We have changed our dance time on Thursdays to 7:00 to 9:15 pm. Fox Trot is from 7-7:45, and all rhythm dancing the rest of the evening. We will not have lessons during the summer, just dancing and reviewing steps that come up that need review.
Marilyn
March 15 was our Annual Hobo Dance, with three kinds of Hobo Stew and March 29 will be a Plus Dance. We are enjoying the twenty new dancers in our Mainstream class, and the plus ten in the Plus class on Wednesdays. Randy Dibble and Randy Lewis keep us on our toes and keep us on the dance floor.
April brings us a regular dance on April 5, and our 58th Birthday dance on April 19. This is also our Election of Executive Board Officers for the next year. Come on in and join the FUN!!!
Sheila Machado
We have started our search for a new club caller, though we are still mostly just getting guest callers for dances right now. We are not in a huge rush as KC Curtis has agreed to teach our lessons in the fall. We are starting to go out for visitations again so you might see us at a dance soon.

Did you attend the Silver City Squares (SCS) fundraising Dance and Auction held February 24th at Bethany Charter School in Silverton? To say it was exciting would be an understatement - 7 or better squares danced and there were (at least) half again as many spectators. Many donations were provided for the Auction, but a special thank you goes out to Kathy Roberts who supplied multi-themed baskets, oodles of them, to support the youth. The full-of-energy event earned SCS about $4,000 towards their May travels to the Pacific Northwest Teen Square Dance Festival (PNTSDF) competitions in Auburn, WA. Ten youth Callers and 4 youth Cuers are planning to compete, in total, more than 50 youth will travel to perform in squares and rounds. Thus, yet another $4,000 is needed for the SCS journey to be a cost covered trip.
Chaps and Petticoats hosted our first ever "Open Mic" Night held on March 15, with MC’s: Thomas Buchheit, Caller and Julia Buchheit, Cuer. It was the wish of Ian Craig, the SCS former Caller, who wanted to provide a place for the youth to showcase their talents to a live audience and ‘Oh What a Night’ it was: Six squares danced, 8 youth Called, 3 youth Cued and a total of 21 youth attended. Thanks to everyone who turned out to support the Silver City Squares! It is not too late to help them towards their fundraising needs - we wish them success and safe journeys.
Chaps and Petticoats will graduate our MS class (composed of 4 new dancers and 3 retreads) on March 24th Soon you, too, will see them in a square as we arrange visitations.
You are invited to our ‘Hippie; dance on April 5th to a decorated hall with a 10-ft tall ‘peace’ sign, psychedelic colors and beads galore. Scott Zinser is our Hippie ‘Dude’ Caller and Mark McDonald's cueing is “groovy man.” At our April 19th dance, we feature Mike Kious as Caller and Connie Clark, Cuer - won’t you please join us.
On Friday, May 3rd, Scott Zinser and Tom Klug (Central Oregon Cuer) will be our Caller/Cuer for the HILLBILLY Dance - such an opportunity to attire yourselves like the Beverly Hillbillies in casual wear, snickers and come dancing!
Happy Feet,
Betty Chipps
Our Annual Barn Sale will be held on April 19-20, 2024, so save the dates.
Beverly De La Bruere
Our club also had a visitation to Chaps and Petticoats’ "Flintstones Dance" on February 16 and captured their flag! On February 26, our club enjoyed hosting a Beginners Dance celebrating the completion of the January/February lessons. It's so nice to have new dancers joining the world of square dancing!
Happy Hoppers dance the first and third Saturdays of each month at Washington Grange #82 in Vancouver, Washington. Come join us this April 6 and 20. Craig Abercrombie will be calling and cueing.
On April 22 (Monday) we will be having a Square Dance Clothing Sale from 6:00-8:30 pm at Washington Grange. Huge selection of clothing for a great price! Everyone is welcome.
Following our March/April session of lessons, the Happy Hoppers will host another Beginners Dance on Monday, April 29. Mark your calendars. Information on flyers and our website at happy-hoppers.com.
See you dancing...Roz and Denise Buddenberg
We are looking forward to our April dances. Our Crazy T-Shirt dance is April 27. Come and join us and be part of the decorations. Wear your most interesting, creative, or funny T-Shirt.
Linda Curtis
Our April 13 dance will feature Terri Sherrer. Terri is a well-known caller in Palm Springs, California, where she has called for many clubs and is an experienced and accomplished square dance teacher. Our current students will be making their social dance debut at this dance, so this is a great opportunity to meet new dancers and to bring any students or new dancers from your club to dance with us. We always feature a supportive dance environment at the Ramblers. We’ll have Advanced dancing from 4-6 pm, followed by SSD and Plus from 7-9:30 pm, at the Oak Grove Community Center. Our theme is Spring Fling, so break out those pastel colors and cross your fingers for warm weather.
For those looking way ahead, we have opened registration for our fall square dance festival, Scares and Squares. This year, our three-day event will take place the second weekend in October (corresponding to our regular dance weekend), so no conflict with Seaside Sashay! Our featured callers are Hunter Keller and Eric Henerlau. We’ll have 14 hours of dancing at all levels from Social Square Dance to C-2. We’ll be dancing at the Beaverton Elks Lodge off Canyon Road near 217, so this will be a convenient location for all our friends in Washington County, as well as Portland and Vancouver. Check out rosetownramblers.com or the flyer under Special Dances on this site for details and registration materials. If you register by June 15, the cost for the full weekend of dancing is only $80.
SYIAS!

Hope to see you on the dance floor.
still has 19 new students and everyone is having a great time learning
the Nation’s official dance. Graduation is planned for the mid to late
April.
On March 23, the Stars celebrated the “Teddy Bear” Parade to
help out the Sheriff’s Department of Jackson County with stuffed
animals for the kids in stressful situations. The stuffed animal collection
is a year-round event. There is always a plastic tub available at the hall
for collecting. One of our members is part of the Jackson County
Sheriff’s Department and keeps an eye on the contents of the tub and
empties it as needed.
On April 13, the Stars will be dark for the Pear Blossom Square
Dance Festival with Tim Pepper calling and MaryAnn Callahan cueing. If you
came to the Star’s Birthday Dance in February, you danced to Tim
Pepper. There were a lot of raves about Tim.
On April 27, the Stars will have their Annual “Spring Western
Event” with Wayne Weaver calling advanced from 6:30 to 7:30 and
alternating Mainstream & Plus from 7:30 to 9:30. No rounds.
All clubs within the Council are reminded to send in their State and TVC dues. They should be remitted by check to the TVC treasurer, preferably by May. The total amount due from each club is $40, $20 State and $20 TVC.
The Council highly recommends that all TVC dancers attend the anniversary dances held by other member clubs. April is a big month for anniversary dances with three clubs celebrating anniversaries.
On April 5th the Valley Squares will celebrate their 74th Anniversary at the Aloha Grange from 7:00 to 9:30. Darrell Kalmbach calling and Connie Clark cueing with Mainstream and every third tip Plus. Valley Squares are the oldest club in the Portland area, 3rd oldest in Oregon.
On April 12th the R Square D will celebrate their 71st Anniversary with Craig Abercrombie calling and Susan Healea cueing. It will be held at the Kelso Senior Center, Kelso WA from 7:00 to 9:30.
On April 15th the Eager Beavers will celebrate their 49th Anniversary at the Aloha Grange from 1:00 to 3:00. Darrell Kalmbach calling Plus and Jeanine Norden cueing Ph II - IV.
Since the OFN is published about the 20th of the month, you still have time to plan on attending the Tri-Council Dance on March 30th. It will be held at the Aloha Grange and will feature the calling and cueing of Randy Dibble and Randy Lewis. The dance will begin at 7PM and continue until 9:30PM with Mainstream and every third tip Plus.

Our plans for our 74th Anniversary Dance included the two Randys, Randy Dibble and Randy Lewis. The floor was full for the evening with seven squares and friendship seating all around. Chicken dinner in the dining room, followed by Anniversary cake. Thank you to all who came to share the celebration with us.
Is 74 years a milestone? Well, I checked it out. In 1950 life was a little different. Dwight Eisenhower was president; the US was fighting a war in Korea and the first credit cards were issued (Diners). In movie theaters Cinderella was a big hit. “Mona Lisa” was a big hit for Nat King Cole. In sports the Yankees won the World Series, the Minneapolis Lakers (now LA) were NBA champs and Oklahoma won the NCAA Football championship. Charles Schultz started the comic strip Charlie Brown while “Guys and Dolls” was knocking them dead on Broadway. The first kidney transplant was performed, and the science community worked to perfect a polio vaccine. It was 3 more years before it was readily available. TVs were rare and of the black and white variety. Children’s programming, soap operas and boxing matches were all broadcast on the radio.
Where have we gone since then? Korea is still an issue, credit cards are endemic, Cinderella is living large at Disney properties and at least one knocks on my door on Halloween. The Oklahoma Sooners won 6 more championships it’s been slim pickings since then. The Lakers have built and lost dynasties and so have the Yankees. New Charlie Brown comic strips lasted 50 years until 2000. Not only do we all have TV’s but our cell phones to keep us connected and tell us where to go. I suspect we’re all children of 1950.
Hope to see you soon.

A couple of recent accidents have not diminished enthusiasm at our dances. Hillary Barrett broke her wrist while vacationing in Hawaii, and Lynne Fonner fell while climbing on a chair at home (DON’T do that!) which produced a big black eye and bruised face. But dancing helps lift the spirit, and all is well despite the mishaps.
As of this writing, the club plans a St Patrick's Day celebration on the Monday before the holiday, and dancers are encouraged to wear green and socialize with snacks before tips.
We’re hoping April will bring warmer weather, but it’s always warm in temperature and atmosphere in the Oak Hills Rec Center gym every Monday night.
For additional information visit our website, http://oakhillsquares.com/. (see link above)

Our club will celebrate its 71st anniversary on Friday, April 12th. Craig will call and Susan will cue this dance. We are also welcoming/looking forward to spring! We will be dark April 27th so that members can attend Yakima Sashay that weekend.
Wednesday night lessons will resume in April, after pausing while Craig was in Arizona. Plus lessons continue at 6:30 and Mainstream workshop is at 7:30 at Kelso Senior Center. Come and brush up on both!

On April 1st our board will meet on Zoom (no April foolin') and make final plans for the election of new officers, which will be held at our annual General Meeting on the 14th, again at La Sierra Mexican Restaurant in Dundee where they have a great side room and great service, too. We'll be visiting the Hoedowners on Saturday, April 13th. For our two dances please note - our first dance will be on Friday, April 5th (instead of the 12th) due to grange-availability. It will be "Grace Notes" with Gospel and all-singing calls. And our second dance "In Nature's Realm" on Friday April 26th will be in honor of Arbor Day. For both dances we are very fortunate to have Terry Halley calling and Sandra Pinion cueing. We would love to have you join us!
Gloria Davis

The venue for our dances when we have them is still the Tillamook Senior Center, 316 Stillwell Avenue. Located on the corner of 4th and Stillwell there is no on site parking and little street parking. The huge Tillamook Coliseum Theater parking lot is directly across the street. Our dances are held weekly on Tuesdays from 4:00 to 6:00 and we always have food and snacks after the dances.
