President's Corner
Welcome to May.
Is anyone else tired of the weather not being able to make up its mind? At least I’m seeing some flowers poking their heads up and some trees blooming and leafing out.
A Challenge. A Challenge. A Challenge. Please ask your newer dancers these questions:
- Why did you start square/round dancing?
- Why did you stay with it?
- What would you recommend that our club/council/state do to attract and keep dancers?
Take these answers, think about, discuss and maybe make some changes. If any of your newer dancers would like to write down their answers and submit them to the OFN editor/webmaster he would be very willing to post them. (They don’t have to put their name on it if they don’t want to.)
As we are heading into a slower/down season for many of our clubs, now is the time to discuss and maybe set in place changes to be ready for a new season of lessons/dances in the fall.
What are some fun things that your club can do over the summer? Now is the time to start planning. Afternoon BBQ/potluck and social? An extra long mystery trip? A visitation that is a bit of a longer drive? Dance in a parade? Have a booth at a local summer event? Dance at your county fair? What normally happens in the summer in your area that you could participate in and get your club’s name out?
If you are planning to travel over the summer is there a club that will be dancing where you are going that you could visit? Can you explore the square dance community and maybe bring some new ideas back? Are you going to one of the large conventions/festivals where you can meet dancers from other states/countries and talk about what works for them?
As you are out and about – please be a good visitor, a good club member, be positive and not negative. Promote our state, your club, your council and encourage people to visit and maybe try square dancing.
Enjoy our good weather (hopefully soon).
Karyn Buchheit

We had a small turnout for our March 30 dance, but it was fun nonetheless. Cherie Cox, caller/cuerb had a cough so was unable to join us. We trust she has improved. She was missed. The hall was decorated for Easter complete with a person-sized rabbit on one side of the stage. There were places intended to be backdrops for photo ops as well. Thank you, Melba and Joy, for all your time and effort! Beautiful!
We have a short business meeting before our dances. 7:00 is Pre-Rounds and then 7:30 to 9:30 is our square and round dance. The dances are called and cued by members of CCCA.
Upcoming dances are June 29, August 31 (Christina's birthday) and November 30.
Respectfully submitted,
Christina Corelli
By the time you read this we will have had our live caller dance April 14 with national caller Terri Sherrer—we are hoping many will have come to join in on the fun of having a live caller who will also have called for Spin Cycle Squares the same day. We dance to recorded music most of the time which does keep our skills honed, but as we all know dancing to a live caller is best. Still one doesn’t get to be where someone like Darrell Lipscomb is calling or Bronc Wise.
Two members of our group traveled to Roseburg to dance to Doug Davis and Dan Preedy as there were several opportunities that weekend to dance advanced. It was so much fun and I would highly recommend attending the second weekend in March next year for the "Luck of the Umpqua" festival.
We dance in Hall B at the Emerald Square Dance Center from 1:30 to 3:30 normally on the 2nd and 4th Sundays unless a holiday interferes with that schedule. If you are planning on attending any of our dances, please contact Fred Beisse at 541-683-2522 to find out if we are dancing on that particular Sunday. We do have to cancel occasionally when we do not have enough for at least one square. You can visit our website at cas-sd.yolasite.com to see what our tentative schedule is. All of our dances are casual. Please wear soft soled shoes to dance on the cushioned, wood floor.
Hope to see you in a square soon.

We had two very successful dances in March with four squares on the floor much of the evening March 15 and March 22. The first dance had a potato bar with a St. Patrick’s theme, Shamrock Shindig. There was lots of green to be seen. Roseburg Buckeroos brought their cuer and taw, Neil and Doris Koozer and 8 square dancers and took back another of our banners. There is a photo in the photo section of the group. Phil Ramey, a new caller for us from the Medford area, called and Sandy Harris cued. On the 22nd we had Darrell Kalmbach calling and Jackie Gale back once again cueing for us. A great time was had by all as we ended the evening with three squares on the floor, a good sign that everyone was enjoying the dancing and camaraderie.
In April our dances being on the 3rd and 4th Fridays cannot be commented upon, but we hope attendance will continue to be high. We are holding our elections somewhat late this year along with our membership drive.
On May 17, we will hold our annual Mexican Fiesta dance with a taco bar. Phil Ramey will be back calling with Jackie Gale cueing so it should be a great night of dancing as well as eating. On May 23rd we will have a new dance theme for us—”Chef’s Famous Breakfast Feed” with breakfast attire optional. It would appear our theme committee likes to eat as we so often have meals included. Come one, come all and enjoy the dancing and feasting.

Oh, my goodness, what an Easter potluck we had on the 31st! Ham, turkey, casseroles, salads, desserts and lots of extras to boot. We managed to get in a few tips. We had guests from other clubs join us. Melba and Joy had decorated the entire hall for Easter! Thanks gals! It was amazing and beautiful! And thank you one and all for the fantastic spread! We were all stuffed!
Please come and join us from 4 to 6 on Sundays—it’s always casual dress. Pleas call our president, David Lajoie at 541-520-7311 to make sure we are, indeed, dancing. We rarely go dark, but it's still best to make sure.

Our caller, Michael Kious, is resigning following the April 13 dance. We are going to miss him and his family and watching that baby grow. We all enjoy taking turns holding and cuddling him. Mike has been our caller for over 11 years and has done a superb job! He makes the dances fun! Roger Putzler will call for our second Saturday dance in May.
Several dancers attended the spring campout at the coast. Our campouts are always great and other clubs' members are always invited to join us.
We dance on the second Saturday with the exception of July and August. We start at 7PM with plus and then dance mainstream and rounds from 7:30 to 10:00.
We invite all dancers to join us at the dance center in Springfield on the second Saturdays.

Our March 16 dance was a memorial to our late caller, Leonard Snodgrass. 125 dancers paid respect to the memory of Leonard. From 7:00 – 9:00 p.m., Bruce Lowther and Sandra Pinion were M.C.’s for callers and cuers from the floor. Refreshments and remembrances of Leonard were held downstairs at 9:00 p.m. Thank you to all who attended.
K.C. Curtis will call our April 20 dance. Then on April 23, at our monthly business meeting, we will decide on our new caller. We have three candidates for that position.

We had our annual Spring Fling dance on March 30 with eight plus squares in attendance. A great dance, and we invited some of the youth who are going to competition get on stage to practice their music.
The youth attended and did their thing in the squares they were in. So fun to watch. We are a small club, but we had food enough to feed the crowd, and we succeeded in having a profitable dance for a change. All clubs need that assistance.
We met in April to catch up on things as we have not met for a long time. In the meantime, our President, Leonard Snodgrass, passed away. So, we have some loose ends to tie up before we end our fiscal year.
Marilyn Schmit
*Note from Judy: The Capitol Callers & Cuers ‘Spring Fling’ dance March 30 was…. Well, AMAZING! We had sixty-five people attending that included people from twelve different Clubs, three different Councils, some from Canada, and of course, members of our Association. WOW!
Bruce also invited youth callers and cuers up to the stage. Two callers and one cuer entertained us! Thank you, everyone, for supporting us.

Our March 8-10 Gleneden Beach Retreat started on a low note with our chosen dining spot saying they were unable to accommodate us due to lack of staffing. We were not able to eat together but everyone showed up to dance Friday evening and no one looked hungry. Bruce Lowther, Charlotte Jeskey, and Judy Russell, called and cued, making this weekend a fun one. Shaun McKamey joined us to dance and do a few calls. Cynthia Lamb led the 60-ties and 70-ties pop music trivia game.
Our last dances before summer break include April 13, Spring dance with plant sale at Congregational Church, 4515 West Hills Rd, Corvallis, 7 - 9:30 pm. Caller and cuer is Sandy Harris. Pots of beautiful irises and other plants will be on sale as a fundraiser for our club.
May 11 is International Butterfly, with Craig Abercrombie, at Congregational Church, 7 to 9:30 pm. This is a beautiful dance featuring food from different countries. We also create butterflies and see who can create the best flying one.
May 18 is a Fundraising event, Garage and Plant sale at Sue’s house in Corvallis, 545 NW Witham Dr., Corvallis. from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm.
May 25 is Veterans’ Recognition, with Caller Charlotte Jeskey and Cuer Sandy Harris. Note location change; First Baptist Church, 125 NW 10th St, Corvallis, 7 to 9:30pm. This is a new place we may use next year. June 8 is a Luau Dance with Bruce Lowther and Judy Russell, calling and cueing at the Congregational Church, 7 to 9:30 pm. Enjoy the opportunity to try a Hulu Dance. It is fun and not that difficult. And we will have Hawaii inspired goodies.
The club will be dark from June 10 until September 14. Lessons for new dancers will begin on Thursday, September 26. We will also be scheduling visitations during the summer.

KC Curtis (Linda) has been hired as our new caller, effective on April 1. His first official dance was April 13 when we had a benefit dance for the Silver City Squares Youth to assist with expenses for their competition weekend in May. The Buzzin’ Bees made a visitation since KC is also their caller.
March was our birthday dance with a good crowd and yummy birthday cake and ice cream. Roger Putzler was our guest caller, and a lot of fun was enjoyed. There was a board meeting, and some changes were made to voting dates for Federation officers, directory time paperwork, etc.
The club has selected various themes for future dances, so stay tuned for flyers in the OFN and Facebook for updates. The first dance in May is a hat dance with Kentucky Derby themes.

We are continuing with Fox Trot, and open rhythm dancing. We have a nice group of people who come each week to dance.
We are thinking about having a party dance on May 16 to just dance, with no lessons that evening. We may also bring forth our 48th birthday dance a month early. A flyer is in the works and will be posted when it is ready.
All the current members have paid their dues, and it is time for us to consider officers in the club. They have not changed for several years, but we ask for volunteers yearly.
There will be no lessons during the summer, just two hours of dancing and reviewing all the rhythms.

Willamette Squares has had a lot of fun dancing at our regular monthly dances. We hosted a Chocolate & Cheese dance in February, a March Pi Dance, and our annual Spring is in the Air dance in April. Although our dances have not had large attendance of late, we have enjoyed visitors from clubs as far away as Portland and welcomed new dancers who recently finished lessons!
For the last couple of years, we have put on a Brisket & More dance at our regular dance on Memorial Day weekend, so we have decided to make it a tradition! We would love to share the food, the fun, and the dancing with you this May, too! So come and join us.

I’ll tell you what …our April 5th Hippie Dance was lively, starting with Scott Z. and Mark McDonald on stage, making us work for it. We had more than enough folks for three squares, though only two squares danced at a time. Costume prizes were awarded, too, and our new graduates (in costume) put us to shame: Female award went to Christine (Chaps graduate), male award went to Jason (of Rosetown Ramblers) and couple award went to Pat E. and Marty (Chaps graduates).
Get out your HILLBILLY casual attire (be a Beverly Hillbilly - rope belt accepted) and join us on Friday, May 3, with Scott Z. calling and Tom Klug (Central Oregon) cueing. Last year our first ever Hillbilly dance (Tom Klug’s favorite theme) was a blast, and we have high hopes of a repeat this year (no prizes, just dance)!
Our patriotic dance is “Flags of Valor” on May 17. We invite all to join us as Darrell Kalmbach and Dave Cooper help us thank those who served our great country.
Looking for another fun dance? On May 19 (3rd Sunday), the Silver City Squares and the Chaps & Petticoats host a Celebration of Life dance for Ian Craig starting 2:00 PM at Bethany Charter School in Silverton (see OFNews flyer). Come join these Clubs and maybe share an Ian story!
On June 7, caller is Scott Z., and cuer is Lane Clem. No theme, just dance. Our last dance of this square dance season is June 21. The theme will be “At the Hop” (time for rolled cuffs, bobbie socks, and poodle skirts) with Terry Halley calling and Sandra Pinion cueing.
Chaps and Petticoats are dark in July and August to fundraise, vacation, and visit those clubs that dance throughout the summer.
See you on the floor dancing,

There is a lot going on at the Boring Barn these days! It is far from boring! We recently graduated 16 Mainstream students and welcome them to our club! Many are actively attending dances!
May has our Spring Fling event with Andy Allemao, a national caller, along with Tami Helms, as cuer. This will be on Friday through Sunday, May 10 through 12. This was a very fun event last year! Check out the whole schedule on our flyer in the OFN. We will have our usual, 1st and 4th Saturday dances at the Barn.
Bingo at the Barn has been very successful so far. We are open to the community every 2nd and 4th Friday night for Bingo games, and we are having great crowds of 75 to 130 people showing up. The larger numbers challenge our parking lot, and fill all our seating, but they enjoy themselves! Thanks to all the Cut-Ups volunteers! However, we will not be having Bingo on May 10th due to the Spring Fling.
Our Annual Barn Sale will be late this year on May 31 and June 1. We will be having shortened hours, since we have a dance on June 1. We are still accepting donations. Plan to come and shop and invite your friends and family along!

The Happy Hoppers Square Dance Club of Vancouver, Washington felt lucky in the month of March. Mark Wheeler shared his calling skills with us on the first and third Saturdays. Our own members, Tom and Liza Halpenny, added Folk dancing and Scottish dancing for all to participate in and complete the fun evenings.
April will be lively with Craig Abercrombie calling and cueing our April 20 dance. The club's clothing sale will be April 22, from 6-8:30 pm. Happy Hoppers are also anxious to celebrate our March/April session of lessons with a Beginners Dance on April 29, 2024 (see flyer). Come dance with us!
May is fast approaching, and our club will dance on May 4 with Daryl Clendenin. We're switching things up this month...we will be having a Cinco de Mayo Potluck Dinner at 6:00 before our mainstream dance at 7:00. On May 18, Daryl will call and cue our Plus dance from 7:00-9:30. Plan to join our FUN!
May will also offer Monday evening Workshops (6:30 Plus and 7:30 Mainstream and beyond beginners) with Craig Abercrombie. He will be reviewing square dance skills and letting dancers strengthen their skills.

Grab your western clothes and cowboy boots for our cowboy dance on May 25.Come prepared to kick up your heels and have a hooting good time, western style.
We will be celebrating our club anniversary on June 22. It will be a blue and white dance which are also our club colors. Please come help us celebrate.

Our April 13 dance featured Terri Sherrer from Palm Springs. A riot of rambunctious Ramblers welcomed visitors from Fairview Village Squares, Happy Hoppers, and Spin Cycle Squares. Terri has taught many students to dance over her 22 years of calling. She has a reassuring manner and uses vivid analogies to help students learn calls. Thus, she was the perfect caller to welcome our current students to their first official social dance.
We held our annual membership meeting before the dance. We elected the following Board members:
President, Jeff Knapp
Treasurer, Tara O’Neil
Secretary, Eileen Pettycrew
Members at Large: Louise Richards and Mary Ross.
Our May 11 dance will be our Mad Plaid Grad extravaganza, where will celebrate the graduation of our latest group of dancers from 7-9:30 pm. We are on track to graduate 18 dancers, and we hope to welcome them in style and encourage them to keep dancing. Calling honors will be shared by Rick Hawes and Rob Page. Admission to this dance is free.
On June 8, we will have our Pride dance with Seattle sensation Stephen Cole calling. Stephen was slated to call our January dance, but we got iced/snowed/frozen out, so he agreed to come down for our June dance instead. Second chances don’t come around all that often, so take full advantage of this one! Advanced dancing from 4-6, and Mainstream/Plus from 7-9:30.
For those looking ahead, registration continues for our fall square dance festival, Scares and Squares. This year, our three-day event will take place the second weekend in October (corresponding to our regular dance weekend), so no conflict with Seaside Sashay! Our featured callers are Hunter Keller and Eric Henerlau. We’ll have 14 hours of dancing at all levels from Social Square Dance to C-2. We’ll be dancing at the Beaverton Elks Lodge off Canyon Road near OR 217, so this will be a convenient location for all our friends in Washington County, as well as Portland and Vancouver. Check out rosetownramblers.com or the flyer under Special Dances on this site for details and registration materials. If you register by June 15, the cost for the full weekend of dancing is only $80.

We are very excited to have dancers that are energetic and enthusiastic about dancing. Some of them are making plans to travel and attend dances in other places. The group enjoy dancing, visiting and sharing their dance experiences. We hope that when you get a chance to meet and greet them you will see their excitement and be willing to have them join in your square. We are planning on holding a dance in Yreka on Friday May 17th at Evergreen Elementary School. (See the attached flyer) We hope everyone will mark their calendars and try to attend.

As to be expected in the great Pacific Northwest, rain/snow ushered in the month of March. But that didn't dampen our spirits for our 9th Anniversary dance which was held on Saturday March 9th. Adam Christman came over from Spokane to guest call and cue for us as he has done with each and everyone of our anniversary celebrations. We had 8 squares on the floor and a totally awesome evening of both square and round dancing. Mark your calendars for our 10th Anniversary dance on March 8th, 2025, it’s gonna be a “party”.
Our club caller, Daryl Clendenin continues with our Sunday basic/mainstream classes and they continue to be fun while learning. We are also looking into possibly doing some round dance lessons, stay tuned for more information on that.
We are getting ready to let our beginners loose. The club will have a beginners dance on Sunday, May 5th for all beginners from all clubs. The dance will be from 6 PM to 8. Look for the flyer. To get new people in the mood, we are holding a clothing sale beginning at 5 pm with all items only a dollar each. Can’t beat that price for a petticoat or a top.
Our regular dances will be on the first and third Fridays (May 3rd and 17th.) Daryl Clendenin will be calling and cueing. Hope to see you there!

The Eager Beavers began the month with our Black & White Dance on the March 4th. Dancing each Monday, we have typically have three or four squares at our afternoon dances. Darrell Kalmbach likes to try out various DBD plus moves on us which makes for interesting dances. Jeanine Norden keeps the floor circling with her phase III and IV rounds added to the standard phase II fare. We look forward to having you join us! Last month I reported that 9,000+ flyers were inserted into 3 local newspapers. The first day of lessons 13 new students showed up and had a good time. The second week only 1 of the 13 returned . . . but she brought a friend which makes 2. At least we got our name out there.

March 2024 was another exciting month for the Hoedowners. We were literally going in circles! On the 9th, we had Rounds with Randy! An evening of round dancing with our cuer Randy Lewis. It was a first for Hoedowners and it was a ton of fun. Then, to continue our “round” theme, we served pizza for dinner and cannoli for dessert.
On the 23rd we shifted gears, changed directions and had Mark Wheeler calling squares for us. We were excited to welcome all our visitors, especially Braids and Braves, who made the trip from McMinnville. It was a delightful evening with the company, the dancing and the first fresh flowers of the year.
All sorts of news coming next month. Stay tuned!!!

March came in like a lamb and out like a lion, but the weather never deters our dancers! We have had great attendance, including members visiting from several nearby clubs, so we've consistently had 3 squares + dancing.
St. Patrick's Day gave us a reason to celebrate, especially since our club colors are GREEN! Many wore traditional green Oak Hills dancing outfits, adding to the festive atmosphere. Snacks and socializing are always a welcome part of our celebrations and we enjoyed good conversation between tips..

R Square D enjoyed dancing to guest callers in March while Craig was in Arizona. Melissa James called our March 8th dance and Jim Raupp called for us on the 23rd. Susan Healea cued at both dances. It’s wonderful to see so many people from Susan’s Tuesday night waltz class dancing rounds at our club dances!
Friday, May 10th is our “Dancing Through the Decades” dance with Craig Abercrombie calling and Susan Healea cueing. This will be a fun night of music from various decades. Ladies and gentlemen, put on your poodle skirts, Roaring 20s garb, Zoot suits, hippie-era outfits or whatever you feel comfortable dancing in! This is our only dance in May, because we will be dark on May 25th for Memorial Day weekend.
R Square D’s Wednesday night lessons will finish on May 8th and we will have a “finish the year” dance on Wednesday, May 29th. This will be a great dance for those who have just finished lessons or are fairly new dancers. It will be held from 6:30 to 9:00pm at the Kelso Senior Center.
We held a club election in March and our officers for 2024 – 2025 are Chris Poole, President; Marv Pope and Sandy Sims, Vice President; Goldie Worley, Secretary; and Gloria Nichols, Treasurer. Our “Sheriff Darla” is very entertaining as she collects “fines” and Happy Bucks at our dances. The money collected is donated to one or more local nonprofits at the end of the year. We also have a recently formed committee to work on promoting square dancing in our area. This committee is led by Sandy Sims and includes Kristy Nessly, Susan Fowler and Lisa Jessen. Thank you to all who are willing to serve our club in these jobs, as well as in other ways!

We went dark on March 16th to attend the memorial dance for Leonard Snodgrass in McMinnville. We had 10 dancers who attended. The place was packed, and it was a wonderful tribute to Leonard!
Our club meeting was held on March 28th and officers for the upcoming year with a June 1st start date were elected. They are Ed Mickelson, President; Donna Swanson, Vice President; Dianne Pratt, Secretary and Lalani Radford, Treasurer. Judy Schnase with continue as past president and our TVC delegates will be Judy Schnase and Janice Sminia. The new officers will be sworn in at our May meeting.
Square dance lessons for new dancers continue and Darrell Kalmbach expects to be done at the end of the April or early May.

On March 8th we had our New Dancers dance, which had been scheduled for January but was cancelled by the icy conditions then. On March 17th, we graduated our 10 students and all of them became members. They came to our dance on March 22nd, our "Spring It Forward" dance. At that dance we collected donations for the Good Neighbor shelter for homeless families in Tigard, as in years past.
We had to suddenly change our original visitation plan for Valley Squares, due to Scott Zinser's surgery, so we scheduled one to the 5th Saturday Tri Council dance, "Spring Beach Party" on the 30th instead.
In May we have new officers (but as I write this in April, we don't know who they are yet!) On May 10th we'll have our "Fiesta Time!" dance, in honor of El Cinco de Mayo. And on the 24th "Hippie Hoedown" where you can wear that old tie-dye shirt, John Lennon glasses, and flowers in your hair! Both dances will be called by Terry Halley and cued by Sandra Pinion, at 7:00 for Plus and Pre Rounds and 7:30 for Mainstream, Rounds, and 3rd tip Plus, at our grange in Kinton. We'll try again for a visitation to Valley Squares on May 3rd.

We are dancing at the Tillamook Senior Center from 4-6 on Tuesday each week. Our caller is Anthony Egan. We have a class in progress at this time and could use some strong angels to help. Some of our members have been making visits to the Astoria Hayshakers, Eager Beavers and Sunset Promenaders.
The address of the Tillamook Senior Center is 316 Stillwell Avenue, Tillamook . Located on the corner of 4th and Stillwell there is no on site parking and little street parking. The huge Safeway parking lot is directly across the street. Our dances are held weekly on Tuesdays from 4:00 to 6:00 and we always have food and snacks after the dances.
