I was recently invited to attend a unique caller patter practice in Port Orford, OR in conjunction with the Oregon Federation meeting April 26-28, 2024, sponsored by the South Coast Council. It was held at the Beachcombers Cove dance hall.
The practice was the brainchild of Dave & Patty Cooper. Seeing the need for newer callers to get more comfortable with patter, they designed a practice event where experienced callers got to invite a newer caller specifically for the purpose to practice patter. It was a well received and successful weekend.
The experienced callers were Phil Ramey from Medford, Terry Halley from the Portland area and Dave Cooper from Port Orford. The practicing callers were Steve Taylor from Port Orford, Wayne Chipman from Central Point, Dann Houghton from Eagle Point and me from Vancouver.
Friday evening we met for about 2 hours and each caller got a turn on stage with their mentor caller. We had 2 squares of volunteer dancers who gave up their time to come and support. At the end of this session all 4 got the chance to call with one other caller on the stage together calling back and forth. Saturday morning we met for another 3 hours following the same format with more time for each caller. We had 1 much appreciated square on Sat AM.
The feedback from the experienced callers was that each student caller improved very much with just those 5 hours of stage time and mentoring. I know that I personally gained some more confidence and improved in my ability to follow dancers around the square. Dave and Patty put on a very good practice and also fed us very well! The clubs represented were very encouraging and supportive. This was a wonderful idea and I am hoping to be a part of putting together a similar opportunity in the Portland area before long.
This was indeed a unique idea and opportunity and Dave & Patty deserve a round of applause for stepping up to make it happen. And another round of applause for the many dancers who selflessly came out to move around the floor to very repetitive calling just so another person could advance in their craft.

We continue to muster more than a square of dancers at each of our dances with some coming from Corvallis and other areas further away. We appreciate those that are committed to traveling so far to keep our club going.
We dance most months on the 2nd and 4th Sundays in Hall B from 1:30 to 3:30PM at the Emerald Square Dance Center at 20th and Yolanda in Springfield. We wold welcome any and all who are traveling through our area to come join us but please check our website at cas-sd.yolasite.com for our tentative schedule and then call Fred Beisse, our fearless leader who finds the good material for us to dance to, at 541-683-2522 to make sure we are dancing on the date you plan to attend.
Our dances are casual always and are followed at 4PM in Hall A by a mainstream/plus dance hosted by Spin Cycle Squares with caller Tim Matteson.
Hope to see you in a square soon,
Gaynor Hintz

Our second dance had the theme “Under The Big Top” with many coming dressed circus style. We had a couple of fat ladies, a lion tamer (Christina Corelli the cuer that night), a tiger lady, a ringmaster (our new president), and several people wore clown noses! It was a fun night with K.C. Curtis calling to four squares on the floor on occasion. We had some out of town visitors as well as members that night. We sure appreciate those that can drive over an hour to come dance with us!
As usual, our May dances are on the 3rd and 4th Fridays, the 17th and 24th. Phil Ramey will call and Jackie Gale will cu the first dance and Janet Geiger will call and Sandy Harris will cue the 4th Friday dance on Memorial Day weekend. We hope you all can join us.
In June we will hold our usual 3rd and 4thFfriday dances, the 21st and the 28th with Mark Wheeler calling and Dave Cooper cueing the first dance and Bruce Lowther calling and Jackie Gale cueing the 4th Friday. The first dance will be a benefit for Greenhill Humane Society which we do annually.
We hope you all will join us on the dance floor sometime soon.. Square dance attire is admired but not required. Our hall has wooden floors and A/C when the weather gets hot. When it does get hot, we all go casual.
Happy dancing, everyone!

Please come and join us from 4 to 6 on Sundays. Our dances are casual dress always.
Please call our president, David Lajoie at 541-520-7311 to make sure we are, indeed, dancing. We rarely go dark, but it's still best to make sure.

We had an all club meeting with a potluck enjoyed by all.
We dance on the second Saturday with the exception of July and August. We dance from 7:00 which is Plus and then Mainstream and Rounds from 7:30 to 10:00. Roger Putzler will be calling for us. He's an awesome caller who also teaches our lessons. Roger started dancing at age 3 in his mother's dance studio in Chicago.
We look forward to our campout at Camp Sherman in June.
We invite all dancers to join us at the dance center in Springfield on the second Saturdays.

We had a profitable Spring Fling and will end our fiscal year at the end of May. Our website, www.ccca-or.org is a reliable source of the listing of our membership if you need assistance or a substitute caller or cuer. Our next meeting is in September. Have a great summer.
Marilyn
We perform annually at five major summer events and add others if the opportunity arises. Those of you who have performed in demos know the pitfalls that can occur when the music and audio equipment is not what you regularly use and is operated by someone else – you cannot hear the music, cannot hear the cuer, the dance surface is uneven, etc. Therefore, the songs need to be practiced often, to the point of having them memorized, to make up for any sound equipment issues that may arise.
To provide an opportunity for more of our cloggers to participate in cueing, Glee has been supervising a weekly “class,” which started with a detailed instruction sheet on the basics of cueing and included an easy song for them to start with. As we all know, cueing is not for everyone and several cloggers have dropped out along the way, but we have few who are continuing and doing quite well. We look forward to adding them to our cueing roster.
We have confirmed June 29 to appear at World Beat from noon until 12:45 p.m. on the European Stepping Stage. World Beat is held at Riverfront Park in Salem and is a festival celebrating world cultures and people.

May 25 is Veterans’ Recognition, with Caller Charlotte Jeskey and Cuer Sandy Harris. We will meet at the First Baptist Church, 125 NW 10th St, Corvallis, from 7:00 to 9:30 p.m. This is a new place that we may use next year.
On June 8 we will have the Luau Dance, our last dance, until September. We will meet at the Congregational Church, 4515 West Hills Rd, Corvallis, 7:00 to 9:30 p.m., with Bruce Lowther and Judy Russell calling and cueing, We will have tropical themed entertainment and snacks. This is your opportunity to learn a little Hula dancing. It is fun and not that difficult.
Except for May 25, our dances will be at the Congregational Church. The club will be dark from June 10 until September 14, and lessons will begin on Thursday, September 26. We will be scheduling visitations during the summer. For more information: corvallissquares.com or Oregon Federation News (OFN) or call or text 541-752-1282.

The first dance of May was a Derby Day dance with hats approved and non-alcoholic mint juleps for some refreshments. Hope you got to attend. Our guest cuer for this event was Sandra Pinion. We got to meet Henry and have his company for the dance.
We have elected officers and will install them in September. We will have a couple of new people on board, and they are welcome.
The first June dance is a beach themed event. So, if you plan to attend, get your beach towels, sun blocking hats, and sunglasses ready to help celebrate the start of summer.

Our open dancing time is fluctuating due to intermittent attendance. A couple of times we have had one couple and me to dance. Not particularly good, but lots of one-on-one dance lessons.
We have scheduled an early birthday dance for May 16 to celebrate our 48th birthday. We are not having lessons that night, just dancing, snacks, and some experienced clothing. Time to get out of the rut for an evening.
Our summertime will be just dancing from 7-9 p.m., with an occasional stop for a troublesome move that Randy sees needs some correction. There is always room for more dancers in the hall.
Marilyn
Elections were held and we have a new President - Keith Waterhouse, new Vice President - Richard Smith and a new Area Delegate - Nancy Wilson. The rest of the Board members will continue in their positions for another year.
We will graduate our new Mainstream and Plus Dancers on June 5 with a potluck and fun activities. They will all be invited to our first Friday Dance on June 7. The dancers all worked hard to get the calls perfected. Randy Dibble has once again done a fantastic job of teaching both levels. We will dance again on June 21.
Our dance on July 5 will be a Patriotic Theme, so wear your Red, White, and Blue. We will be attending the Summer Festival at Blanchet Catholic School July 12-14, and on July 19, we will finish out our dances. See you on the Dance Floor.
Sheila Machado
Our new club callers are KC Curtis and Thomas Buchheit. KC will be doing mostly the Saturday dances and Thomas mostly the Friday dances. We are happy that they both agreed.
We will be dancing through the summer except for our Friday dance in July, as we will be going dark that dance for Summer Festival. See you in a square.
Petrina Buchheit
We look forward to celebrating two PAC club anniversaries in June. Happy Hoppers will celebrate on June 15, and River City Dancers will celebrate on June 22.
See you on a dance floor!
Just two days later, on May 31, we will be hosting the PAC 5th Friday dance. The theme is "Sunshine and Lollipops."
Breaking news: We now have air-conditioning, so no more cancellations due to heat!
June 5 will be our summer kickoff dance with Darrell Kalmbach calling, and Tami Helms cueing. And on June 19, we welcome Mark Wheeler to call, and Tami Helms to cue.
Come dance with us on 1st, 3rd, and 5th Wednesdays at Abernethy Grange, 15745 S Harley Ave in Oregon City. Our regular dances start with pre-rounds at 7:30, followed by Mainstream and rounds from 8-9:30. At 9:30, we have announcements, followed by one Plus tip.
The schedule for the PAC dance will be slightly different. We’ll have pre-rounds from 7:00-7:15, Plus from 7:15-7:30, and then Mainstream and rounds from 8-9:30.
We'd love to see your smiling faces. Come join the fun.
Kathy Polley
On June 7 Caller is Scott Z., and cuer is Lane Clem - no theme, just dance. Our last dance, of this square dance season, is June 21. Our theme is “At the Hop” (rolled cuffs, bobby socks, and poodle skirts time) with Terry Halley calling and Sandra Pinion cueing.
Chaps and Petticoats are dark in July and August to fundraise, vacation, and visit those clubs that dance throughout the summer.
See you on the floor dancing,
Betty Chipps
May is here, and Daryl Clendenin has been calling and cueing for our club this month. We were excited to have a Cinco de Mayo potluck dinner at 6:00 pm on May 4, just before the Mainstream dance at 7:00 pm. Then, on May 18, the Happy Hoppers enjoyed a Plus dance.
June will see us kick up our heels before going dark for the summer. We would love to see everyone on June 1 for a Plus dance with Craig Abercrombie calling and cuing. June 15th is the Happy Hoppers 65th Anniversary Dance. Craig Abercrombie and Adam Christman will be calling and cueing this Mainstream dance with some plus tips and rounds. Come help us CELEBRATE!
We will also host "Beyond Basics" Mainstream and Plus workshops on Monday June 3 and 10 (6:30 Plus, 7:30 Beyond Basics, 8:30 Mainstream). See our flyer.
Our club continues to visit as many square dance clubs and festivals as we can. Lots of our dancers enjoyed the Yakima Spring Festival and look forward to many festivals coming up! We had many dancers attend Buzzin' Bees Anniversary dance. It was difficult to know this was their last dance. A bittersweet time for a club with many ties and memories for the Happy Hoppers!
See you dancing...Denise and Roz Buddenberg
On June 8, we will have our Pride dance with Seattle sensation Stephen Cole calling. Stephen was slated to call our January dance, but we got iced/snowed/frozen out, so he agreed to come down for our June dance instead. Second chances don’t come around all that often, so take full advantage of this one! Advanced dancing from 4-6, and Mainstream/Plus from 7-9:30.
We’ll be dark in July and August, as we recharge our batteries, enjoy some vacation time, and attend some special dance events. We’re encouraging our members to go out dancing, so if you happen to see them on a dance floor, please help them feel welcome. The Ramblers love visitors, so we would love to welcome any and all dancers from other clubs to our dances when we resume in September.
For those looking further ahead, registration continues for our fall square dance festival, Scares and Squares. This year, our three-day event will take place the second weekend in October (corresponding to our regular dance weekend), so no conflict with Seaside Sashay! Our featured callers are Hunter Keller and Eric Henerlau. We’ll have 14 hours of dancing at all levels from Social Square Dance to C-2. We’ll be dancing at the Beaverton Elks Lodge off Canyon Road near OR 217, so this will be a convenient location for all our friends in Washington County, as well as Portland and Vancouver. Check out rosetownramblers.com or the flyer under Special Dances on this site for details and registration materials. If you register by June 15, the cost for the full weekend of dancing is only $80. The rate goes up to $90 after June 15.

The Council welcomes the new officers and offers a big "Thank You" to those who have served and to Andis Garuts, Marie Clem, and Dale Brabham, who are continuing to do so.
The Council highly recommends that all TVC dancers attend the anniversary dances held by other member clubs. On June 17th the Oak Hills Squares will celebrate their 2nd Anniversary at the Oak Hills Recreation Center from 7:00 to 9:30. Mark Wheeler and Rene Ruud calling with Lane Clem cueing. Although the Oak Hills Squares have been a TVC club for 5 years, this is only the second time they have had an anniversary dance due to Covid and other issues.
Our “Dancing in the Park” is on Saturday, June 29th from 7 pm to 9:30 pm at the Oak Hills Community Center, 2400 NW 153rd Ave., Beaverton. This will be an outdoor event similar to the "Dancing Under The Stars" dances of the past. Darrell Kalmbach is the caller and Tami Helms will cue. Remember to bring your lawn chairs! The format for this dance follows the standard TVC format, 15 minutes of upper level rounds, 15 minutes of Plus, then Mainstream, with 3rd tip plus from 7:30 to 9:30.
Please do not park in front of the homes on Oak Hills drive. There is great parking at the Community Center lot, and the school, just to the north.
Since Memorial Day is being observed on the Monday scheduled for our meeting we have decided to not have the May meeting. The next TVC meeting will be an "in person" meeting held at the Aloha Grange on June 24th at 7PM. A dinner will precede the meeting at 6PM. Joann Swanson is providing her famous Italian casserole for us to enjoy.
Ferrous Steinka
That does not mean we will be gone altogether, however. We said last month the CRDs will hold brush-up workshops again this year. We received many requests for brush-up work shops on the plus level and so have added them to our Sunday evening programs this year. Our Mainstream brush-ups are from 5 PM until 6:30 and Plus from 6:30-7:30. Daryl will take your requests each night and work you through it. So, if someone wants to learn or brush up or just have a good time dancing casually on a Sunday evening, come on out.
The only time we will not dance is when the 5PM temperature is 90 degrees or more.
We look forward to having you in a square this month.
Nick Johnson
Our new club officers for the next year are: Sally & Mike Duyck as Co-Presidents, Karen & Ferrous Steinka as Co-Vice Presidents, Donna Swanson as Secretary, and Joann & Ronnie Swanson as Co-Treasurers. Tom Sminia will join Judy Groom as our two TVC Reps. We thank our outgoing team of officers for their dedication. We hope you will join us for our Monday afternoon Plus dances at the Aloha Grange, which is air-conditioned in case Mother Nature has turned up the heat by then.

The Hoedowners held their only dance of the month on Saturday, April 1st. What was the theme?, “April Foolish” of course. You had to be there to know what all the foolishness was. Mark Wheeler was our caller, Randy, “How many shopping days “til Christmas?” Lewis cued.
We headed north to Vancouver on April 27 for the Buzzin’ Bees last dance. 66 years of square dancing must end with a big party. Several callers were on the stage and five squares of dancers. Bravo!
Anything else happen in April? Whoa, we had election of officers and, drum roll please, Sarah Richmond was elected president. Patrick Hoye Vice President and Chet Wolter as Treasurer. We are all excited!

For April we had a nice showing of Promenaders who attended the April 3rd, 59th anniversary dance for the B & B's. It was a super fun dance and many clubs attended. There were 8 squares most of the time and a few times there were 10 squares!
On Monday April 15th a number of our Plus dancers joined the Eager Beavers Plus dancers for their 49th anniversary.
Mainstream dance classes have continued from January with 11 new dancers. At this writing the graduation is scheduled for May 5th, and we hope most of them will join the club! Tami and Tim's waltz class is wrapping up in early May as well and they had a large class that has been well attended.
