It’s hard to believe that my year as President is over. Time really does fly.
Your new President, Patrick Cox takes office at the OFSRDC meeting later this month. Please welcome him and help him have a hopefully easy and uncontroversial year. It is always nicer and easier when things go smoothly.
Many clubs start lessons this month – both squares and rounds and at more than one level. Angels are always welcome to have since their experience and knowledge at a level/rhythm helps put them in the correct spot which in turn helps students figure out what they are doing.
However, angels do need to remember that they are not the teacher. They shouldn’t argue with or complain about who is the teacher OR how they are teaching. Please remember – EVERY caller, EVERY cuer and EVERY club has a different method, style, feel and presentation with lessons. Angels NEED to roll with the flow and be open to this caller/cuer/club – you might learn something yourself, at the least you will be strengthening your own skills by repeating what you learned previously. This is true no matter how many times you have been through lessons – there is ALWAYS something new to pick up.
Every club member NEEDS to be welcoming and encouraging of new students. How you interact with students and club members can be vital in them wanting to come back to your club and your lessons. Your club can’t grow or revitalize if it is perceived as unwelcoming or critical and it only takes one person being a grump/complainer/negative to give that impression. In this case one person does make a difference. Please don’t be that one person. Over the years I have seen students and experienced dancers quit because of that one person way too many times. I would really love to never see or hear of that happening again. Remember – all it can take is one comment (even if it is meant as a joke or just off the cuff backwards encouragement and not remembered by the person saying it) to make someone so discouraged that they decide to quit. Once they quit, there is very little chance of them trying again.
As we go into our next season, please remember our youth, our students, our attitudes are our future. How we react to others will dictate how we survive and grow. We all want to grow and not just survive.
Now that my lecture is over – Midi-Winter 2025 is going to be exciting this year. Please start talking to your students about it early and encourage them to attend. All of the featured talent is international this year and this is a great opportunity to hear and dance to caller, cuers and clogging instructors that you might not be able to see again. Jaden Frigo (caller) is from Australia, Susie and Gert-Jan Rotscheid (cuers) are from The Netherlands and Oliver and Angelika Kromer (clogging cuers) are from Germany.
It's an exciting time in the square dance world, with many of our clubs starting lessons this month. Be sure to let us know how your lessons are proceeding when you file your news reports for next month.

Hi everyone!
I just wanted to give you all an update on our amazing Festival that happened in July of 2024. We had 228 dancers that came and enjoyed the wonderful talents of Jason Raleigh and Bev and Tim Pepper. And I'm so happy to report that thanks to everyone's efforts the festival did manage to make a small profit that was given back to the federation at the September state meeting. Thank you to all the dancers and the federation that took a chance on us. Hope to see you on a dance floor soon.
Sincerely,
Lisa Kious, Bill and Lisa Coen

November 30 is the next scheduled CCCA Fifth Saturday dance. Please put both dates on your calendar.
We have a short business meeting before our dances. Dances start at 7:00PM with Pre-Rounds and thenfrom 7:30 to 9:30 is our square and round dance. The dances are called and cued by members of CCCA.
Respectfully submitted,
Christina Corelli
We dance to recorded tips but are hoping to have a live caller in the near future. Kris Jensen is unable to join us in September although we will have a chance to dance to here fine calling Sept. 15 at Spin Cycle Squares. Maybe next time she is here she’ll be able to call for us. It is always a hoot to dance to Kris. Meanwhile we hope we have the two dances scheduled for the 11th and 23rd of August (we have enough signed up for the 11th as I write this) and also hope that the dances tentatively scheduled for Sept. 15 and 29 will come about.
We dance from 1:30 to 3:30PM on scheduled Sundays (twice a month normally) and look forward to seeing those who cam make it. We are a small group but still very much invested in the advanced program. Please be sure to check with Fred Beisse at 541-683-2522 to find out whether we will be dancing that Sunday. If we do not get more than a square, we do not rent the hall. You can check our website at cas-sd.yolasite.com to see our tentative schedule.
All dances are casual. Hall B is located behind the Emerald Square Dance Center at 20th and Yolanda in Springfield.
See you in a square,
Gaynor Hintz
The day after our July 19th dance, some of us attended the wedding and reception of two of our members, Connie Seamans and Paul Gates, who have been Mid-Winter Chairs twice since they got together 12 years ago. The ceremony was officiated by Paul’s cousin and was followed by a big BBQ and potluck at their home in Pleasant Hill. The day was quite hot but there was shade provided by the tents and some shade from the house. Everyone was happy to see them finally tie the knot and wish them a lot of joy in their future lives together.
We will have two dances in August with Darrell Kalmbach and Bruce Lowther calling and hope they see good turnouts as well. In September as we start the new dance year with our sister club once again hosting dances we still don’t know how many dances we’ll be hosting through the fall months and neither do we know exactly when. We are hoping to return to our 2nd and 4th Friday schedule. It is wait and see time.
Single Trees starts out the night with a plus tip at 7:30PM and then 15 minutes of rounds, followed by Mainstream with every 3rd tip plus and rounds in between. You can check out our schedule here in the OFN or by going to singletrees.blogspot.com. Summer dances are always casusal but by fall we hope to see more square dance attire. We do not take formal breaks.
Gaynor Hintz
We enjoy dancers from other clubs who join us from time to time.
Please join us from 4 to 6 on Sundays. it's casual dress always.
Please call our president, David Lajoie at 541-520-7311 to make sure we are, indeed, dancing. We rarely go dark, but it's still best to make sure.
Christina Corelli
This fall we will be dancing on the third Saturdays. Roger Putzler will be calling. We start at 7:0 with half an hour of Plus and then from 7:30 to 10:00 is Mainstream with rounds. Christina Corelli is cueing.
Mike Kious's twin sister, Sammie, passed away in July. She was 36. We keep Mike and his family in our thoughts and prayers. Cards were sent to Mike and Camille and also to George and Patty Hermann, their grandparents. Losing a person so young is unimaginable and a twin too. We pray that the hole Sammie's passing leaves is filled with love and support. Thank you one and all for reaching out.
Whirl-A-Ways was invited to a wedding. Yes, a wedding! Connie Seamans and Paul Gates tied the knot last month out at their home on Hilltop Drive. It was outdoors with a BBQ potluck to boot. Best wishes to the happy couple!
Happy dancing!
Christina Corelli
Our club is ready to start up another year of lessons and another year of dancing and friendship! Lessons start Sunday, September 15, 5:00-6:30 p.m. at the McMinnville Grange and continue on Sunday evenings. First two lessons are free. We always welcome Angels to help out!
We’d love to have you visit us! Or send a new dancer! Our first dance starting out this season will be Saturday, September 21, 7:00-9:30 p.m., followed by refreshments. The McMinnville Grange is our venue.

We will also work on some topics for education to be discussed at the end of our meetings. Thomas, our new vice-president, has asked for assistance in this endeavor.
If you need some assistance, you can find contact information at www.cccaor.org.

Our Intro to Clogging class will begin on Tuesday, September 17 from 5:45 to 6:30 p.m. at the Square Dance Center on 45th Avenue NE. This is a great way to learn about clogging and try it on for fun!!! The cost is $50 if you pre-register at the Cherry Cloggers website where registration forms and additional information is available. You can also show up at the door, but the price goes up to $65. That is the whole cost to the learn to clog program until December. Pretty good bargain!
We will hold our election of officers during October. Ballots will be available during the two class times of 4:00 and 6:30 p.m. Elections are generally open for two weeks so all members in good standing can participate.
Cathy Drawson
Look for our flyers for updates on special events each month. Now is the time to tell your friends to sign up for a free square dance lesson September 26, 7:00 - 8:30 p.m., at the Corvallis Community Center, 2601 NW Tyler St., Corvallis. Instructors are Caller, Bruce Lowther, Judy Russell, Cuer. To sign up and register for your free lesson, call CCC, 541-766-6959 or just come and register. If you like the lesson, you can register for classes starting Oct. 3 to learn the Mainstream, beginner level. Classes will be held on Thursday 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at CCC. We welcome dancers of all ages: families, couples, and singles. This is also a good refresher opportunity for those dancers who have not danced for a while.
The Benton County Fair asked the club to do a demo dance at the fair, but the positive reaction by the dancers turned this into multiple demos over several days. A fun time was had by all. Jaga, Tom, and Tove distributed flyers about the free first lesson, and answered questions from the audience about square dancing. I think they will do this again next year.
Rachel Nettleton
We had a club meeting to certify the officers previously elected and turned over the club to the new officers in mid-August. Some proposed changes to our Practices and Procedures will be voted on and the position of Secretary hopefully filled. It is an open position as of September 1. Our out-going President, Cheryl Hagey, is recovering nicely from her neck surgery. She will be in a neck brace for a few more months to ensure complete recovery and healing.
Marilyn
We are contemplating doing rumba for fall class to help the youth for competition. We will sponsor a two-step class on Sudays to assist the youth junior level for competition. We all need to encourage the youth to learn another rhythm and go up one level from Phase II.
Another thought is for a theme dance the end of August to end the summer’s sessions. Suggestions are encouraged. A good way to celebrate our cuer’s birthday.
Marilyn
We had a great time at the Summer Festival. There were over 30 of our club members in attendance and we won both the Wood Award and the Chairman's Award. Two of our Youth, Kaylia Avila ($3000.00) and Evie Lee ($500.00) won scholarships from the National and State levels. CONGRATULATIONS!! Several of our new dancers joined us at the festival and danced, danced, danced, improving their skills and having a blast.
September brings us a new round of Mainstream Lessons beginning on Wednesday, September 11 at 6:30 p.m. Randy Dibble will be the instructor. At 8:00 p.m., Randy will teach Advanced to all Plus dancers who want to go to the next level. Flyers are posted.
Our Annual Corn and Cluck Dance is Friday, September 20, with a Chicken and corn on the cob dinner, followed by lots of dancing and some chicken races. See Flyer for more information or check out our Facebook page: Salem Swingin' Stars Square Dance. We continue to dance on the first, third, and fifth Fridays of each month. See you on the dance floor.

We are gearing up for lessons to start in September. We will be offering mainstream, plus and waltz. Mainstream will be on Tuesday evenings. Both Plus and Waltz will be on Sundays. Please see our flyers for more information.
We are hoping that the Pacific Northwest Teen Square Dance Festival will be in Oregon in 2025. We will have more information by next month.
Petrina Buchheit
We were looking forward to a repeat in July, but unfortunately, we had to cancel due to an accidental scheduling conflict at the center. However, we are looking forward to our annual August Watermelon Dance. It will be our last dance of summer 2024!
Shari Schonbrun
See you on a dance floor!
KC Curtis will call, and Tami Helms will cue on September 18.
Darrell Kalmbach will be teaching our lessons this year, starting September 11. Basic and Mainstream lessons begin at 6:00 on Wednesday evenings. The first lesson is free. Dancers of all ages are welcome.
We dance on 1st, 3rd, and 5th Wednesdays at Abernethy Grange, 15745 S Harley Ave., in Oregon City. Pre-rounds 7:30, Mainstream 8 to 9:30, followed by announcements and one Plus tip.
On August 15 at the Clackamas County Fair in Canby, 2 squares of Chaps and friends performed a square dance DEMO at the Food Court Stage with Scott Zinser calling (despite wearing a surgical boot). We began at 5pm and did a tip. Afterwards, still on stage, Scott slowed down the calling of the moves revealing just how simple the moves were, when not danced together. Next we invited the audience to join us in squares for the same series of moves. Now we had 3 squares dancing - some angels had to sit out, as we were well received by the audience. It is always so fun to see the surprise on people’s faces when they. too, discover they can square dance! Thank you Scott (you are such a trooper) and thank you dancers.
We are offering two free MS Lesson nights, at Maplewood Grange, on Sept 15th and
Sept 22nd from 5-7 PM (see Flyer under Lessons in September’s OFN). Scott Zinser is our Caller, and “Word of Mouth” has been our formula for recruiting new dancers this year. We look forward to our classes and seeing our efforts come to fruition. Students can pay as you go or inquire about up-front paid discounts.
Hope you are having a wonderful summer!
Happy Feet,
Betty Chipps
Our Mainstream lessons will be starting on September 12. Remember the first lesson is always free! Bring a friend or come be an angel to help the new dancers. Scott Zinser is the instructor, and lessons begin at 7:30 PM, every Thursday. Remember that throughout the year we also have line dance lessons!
Bingo at the Barn is happening on the second and fourth Friday nights, doors open at 6:00 PM, games start promptly at seven. There will NOT be a pancake breakfast this fall, but we will be doing another craft show on November 16. It is good time to do some Christmas shopping!
Remember to come out and dance on the 1st, 4th, and 5th Saturdays for a fun time at the Boring Barn!
Bev De La Bruere
Although we were dark with no dancing at the Washington Grange #82 this summer...our club participated in the Battle Ground and Camas parades to promote square dancing. The club is also performing with other clubs at the Clark County Fair on August 7, advertising the fun and benefits of square dancing.
The club's annual picnic was August 4. The socialization, food, and fun could not have been any better! Thanks to all who were able to be a part.
Happy Hoppers begin our first session of Basic / Mainstream & Plus lessons this fall on Monday, September 9. We will then host Craig Abercrombie on Saturday, September 21 calling and cuing our Mainstream with some Plus dance.
Information about our club can be found on our website: happy-hoppers.com
We look forward to seeing you at our 1st and 3rd Saturday dances! Come see us...we love visitors!
See you dancing...Denise and Roz Buddenberg
We dance every second and fourth Saturday of the month in our comfortable air-conditioned hall on 42nd and Jackson in Milwaukie.
We began August with our club dance on August 10, and our club picnic on August 18. We will be serving root beer floats during the break at our second monthly dance on August 24.
Our Mainstream dance lessons begin on September 8 from 3:30 - 5 PM and will continue at that time weekly.
We invite you to join us for your dancing pleasure.
Carol Mendenhall
We’ll be offering Social Square Dance lessons every Wednesday from 7-8:30 pm. We start on September 11 and continue every Wednesday through mid-December. Our first two lessons are free. The venue is Bridgeport United Church of Christ, 621 NE 76th Ave., Portland 97213.
We can’t wait to resume our social dances on September 14, with the stupendous Scott Zinser calling our Back to School Dance at Oak Grove Community Center. Although our club focuses on creating a safe space for the LGBTQ community, everyone is welcome at our dances, and we encourage you to stop on by if you are looking for a high-energy, friendly dance environment. We alternate Social Square Dance and Plus tips from 7-9:30 pm.
Time’s running short to register for our mostly annual fall square dance festival, Scares and Squares. This year, our three-day event will take place October 11-13 (corresponding to our regular dance weekend), so no conflict with Seaside Sashay! Our featured callers are Hunter Keller and Eric Henerlau. We’ll have 14 hours of dancing at all levels from Social Square Dance to C-2. We’ll be dancing at the Beaverton Elks Lodge off Canyon Road near OR 217, so this will be a convenient location for all our friends in Washington County, as well as Portland and Vancouver. Check out rosetownramblers.com or the flyer under Special Dances on this site for details and registration materials.

The TVC Directory for 2024-2025 was completed, printed, and distributed in July. Thanks to those who helped make this happen in a timely manner.
Several TVC clubs had members attending the Oregon State Summer Festival in Salem. Some actually got to dance with Governor Tina Kotek who was at the opening ceremonies and then danced! The attendance this year was greater than last year but still not enough to get into the black.
The Hot August Nights came early this year and in July caused the cancellation of some of the Council clubs dances. Even those with air conditioned halls found that the systems could not quite keep up with the heat. In combination with several clubs dark for the summer, the cancellations made for fewer dancing opportunities in July.
The Council highly recommends that all TVC dancers attend the anniversary dances held by other member clubs. September has two clubs celebrating anniversaries.
On September 7th the Wavesteppers will hold their Anniversary dance at the Garibaldi City Hall Ballroom from 5:30 to 8:00, Anthony Egan calling. Finish off your day at the Coast with some dancing.
On September 27th the TriSquares will celebrate their 26th Anniversary with Terry Halley & K.C. Curtis with Cuer Sandra Pinion. It will be held at the Kinton Grange with Rounds at 7:00, Plus at 7:15, Mainstream and Rounds at 7:30 with 4th tip Plus.
The next TVC event will be on September 14th at the Kinton Grange where the Council will host a Saturday dinner dance and a Sunday Federation meeting on the 14th and 15th. The dance theme is "Southern Nights" and will feature the calling of Craig Abercrombie and Julie Stiers cueing. A "Chicken and Waffle" dinner precedes the dance at 6PM. Then at 7PM advanced rounds 7PM, Plus at 7:15, and Mainstream at 7:30 with every third tip plus.

Speaking of Daryl we got the good news that the nodule on his vocal cord was nothing to be concerned about. It seems they stuck a thing down his throat, said “yes, it’s there”, and “nope, nothing to worry about”.
As many of you know, Daryl has a calling class on line with students all over the world. One of his close-by students is Renee Ruud. Another Clendenin success, as we have seen her grow in her pattern calling and confidence. She has a great singing voice and the duets they sing are great.
This is being written early, but if you were not at the Clark County Fair on the 7th of August you missed a combination of club dancers demonstrating how much fun it is to square dance. We had an hour plus to show that what we do now is not what everyone was taught in elementary school. Hopefully, this we translate to more new dancers this fall. Many thanks go to Frannie Wells for all of her work in putting this together.
Usually, we have a new class beginning on the first Sunday in September, but because of the Labor Day holiday that weekend we will start it a week later. Our first dance will be on Friday, the 6th. Daryl will be calling and cueing. Our second dance will be on the 20th. Hope to see everyone we missed this summer. We might get to have Renee and Daryl sing a few songs for us.
Nick Johnson
On July 29th we had a dance in honor of the 2024 Olympics with dancers wearing various athletic attire or brandishing equipment. There were boxing gloves, bow & arrows, fencing foils, rackets and paddles everwhere! See photo in this months OFN issue. After the dance we had a 5th Monday dine out at Red Robin with 20 people attending.
Darrell Kalmbach continues to challenge and delight us with his excellent calling, and we are grateful to Lane Clem and Tami Helms who have been filling in for our cuer, Jeanine Norden, during her recovery from surgery.
We will begin September with our Labor Day Celebration featuring Daryl Clendenin as caller. We hope you can join us at the Aloha Grange every Monday afternoon from 1:00 to 3:00. Casual dress is welcome, and on the second Monday of the month we encourage Hawaiian attire all summer long.
For current dancing information, please see our website at http://EagerBeavers.info. (see link above).

Lessons are scheduled to last one and a half hours followed by a one hour Mainstream workshop ending at 7:30.
The fourth Sunday will be a Basic level dance with every third tip Mainstream until 7 o’clock when it’s time for a potluck FEAST.
Craig Holt
Fortunately, Hoedowners had planned for such contingencies and had a Summer Road Trip Dance on the 13th of July. Mike Kious was the caller and Connie Clark was on cuer duty. Was it corndog weather? Yep, 93 degrees.
July 27th was the Hoedowners’ Here’s the Scoop Dance. That meant Terry Halley doing the honors as our caller and Randy Lewis taking the stage as our cuer. Was it corndog weather? Nope it was only 82 degrees. Don’t worry there is still plenty of time for more scorching weather in August and September and we’ll be prepared.
In September, our classes begin on the 10th. Gather your friends who want to start this fun hobby and join us.
We’ll be dark on September 14th. On the 28th, we’ll be having our Pirates Booty Dance. With Randy Dibble calling and Randy Cueing. We’re letting you know now so you can start working on your pirate costume.

September is around the corner and with that is Fall colors and cooler weather. Lessons will start on September 11th, 2024, at Catlin Grange. We are hopeful our membership drive brings in new Dancers. Our dances will change from our summer Wednesday schedule to our normal alternate Friday and Saturdays.
September 13th (Friday) will be the first dance. September 28th (Saturday) will be a Neil Diamond tribute. Craig loves doing Neil Diamond songs and we enjoy watching him do them. It is so much fun.
We are expecting the Kelso Sr. Center to be completed the end of September. Hoping our October Dances to be in the renovated Sr. Center. For additional information see us on Facebook on the R Square D Facebook page, or see our website: http://r-square-d.info/. (see link above)

September 7th is a mainstream dance with the theme "Tailgate Party". Please join us for a fun dance and wear your favorite team apparel! Darrell Kalmbach is calling and Jeanine Norden is our guest cuer. September 21st is a mainstream dance with Darrell Kalmbach calling and Tami Helms cuing.
The Sunset Promenaders are having our annual club campout at Silver Lake RV Resort, September 27-29th. This is always such great fun with visiting around the campfire, games, and great food!
Don't forget the State Meeting Dinner Dance "Southern Nights" at the Kinton Grange on September 14th with dinner served at 6 pm. Donation of $8.00. Craig Abercrombie is calling, and Julie Stiers is cueing. Sounds really fun!
Tami Helms and Tim Keck will be doing cha cha/rumba lessons this fall. They begin on Sunday October 6th from 2:30-4:00 for 10 weeks. $7.00 per person per week. 10 couples are needed to keep the class going. Please sign up and learn this spunky dance with friends! The classes will be at the Hillsboro IOOF Hall.
The Seaside Sashay is coming to the Seaside Convention center October 25-26. Promenaders are co-sponsors of the event. It is always fun.. If you have never gone... consider it in your plans! You can purchase tickets/ribbons from Dianne Pratt.
Beginning Mainstream dances will be starting in January – more details to follow in the next update.
The highlight of July was the Independence Dance with root beer floats and lots of red, white and blue!
