Obituaries
- Paul Swenson
PAUL SWENSON 9/15/1921 - 7/2/2024
Our friend and co-founder of Eager Beavers passed away July 2nd, 2024. Paul was a kind, funny, wonderful man, and is missed. He would have been 103 this month. Until a few months ago he would attend a dance and visit with everyone. Two years ago he was honored on a float in the Rose Festival Parade as the oldest surviving WWII Oregon combat veteran. There will be a celebration of life on what would have been his 103rd birthday Sunday September 15th at 1:00 pm. It will be held at the Sheraton Airport Hotel. 8235 NE Airport Way, Portland, Or 97220.
Below is the article KATU did about Paul on his 100th Birthday. Many of us attended his 100th Birthday celebration. Our condolences to Karen Ripka daughter/care giver and the rest of his family.
September 2021 - This week’s Everyday Hero is a Portlander who was born before the St. Johns Bridge was built, and he remembers when Charles Lindberg inaugurated the airport at Swan Island in the late 1920s.
His name is Paul Swenson, and he just turned 100 on Sept. 15, 2021. But what's more impressive than his longevity is that he’s a war hero who inspires everyone around him.
“All through the 30s I would go down to the Rose Festival and tour all the ships. I always wanted to be a sailor,” Swenson said.
To meet him is to come face to face with history.
“My ship and two other ones were the first to be hit by kamikazes on October 25th, and on the next day, the 26th of October, we got hit by a single kamikaze,” he said. For Swenson, every day since then has been a gift. “I don’t know why I am here, because it crashed about 10 feet from me. They left me for dead.”
Swenson was born in 1921 and joined the Navy right after graduating high school. After the war and surviving those first kamikaze attacks, he returned home to a comfortable life in Portland. He married his wife Dottie and bought a house, but he never lost that sense of adventure.
“Went on our first cruise on our 50th wedding anniversary and took our kids on the same cruise through the Panama Canal on our 70th anniversary. For them to see something other than Oregon, Washington and California,” he said as the reason for taking them.
Swenson worked as a mailman and then retired. He is currently the longest living member of the local letter carrier’s union.
He and Dottie loved square dancing so much they founded the Eager Beavers Square Dance Club in Beaverton. Dottie passed away a few years ago, but his growing family keeps Swenson busy. He still enjoys playing chess and cards.
And he has no problem sharing his secret to living such a long and inspiring life. “I think all those hugs from the square dancers and carrying the mail and square dancing for 40 years, that was exercise without realizing it, so I think that’s why I am here,” he said.

Lebanon had our annual Labor Day campout and Silo Dance. We had one tip where our caller climbed to the top of a silo on the farm to call the tip. A lot of card and board games were enjoyed, while the various children at the campout had a lot of fun on hayrides, with a few even getting to drive the tractor.

Cascade Callers & Cuers Assoc
We had a fun dance August 31 which was also Christina's birthday. As promised, there was cake and ice cream! Dancers came from Sweet Home and Corvallis and locally.
November 30 is the next scheduled CCCA Fifth Saturday dance. Put both dates on your calendar.
We have a short business meeting before our dances. 7:00 is Pre-Rounds and then 7:30 - 9:30 is our square and round dance. The dances are called and cued by members of CCCA.
Respectfully submitted,
Christina Corelli
We had two dances in August on the 11th and the 25th as we intend to do in September. We danced to recorded music and calls by such callers as Johnny Preston and Bronc Wise. One Sunday we were very close to having two squares on the floor. We keep hoping some more advanced dancers will move into our area as they have in other areas. In the meantime we always have a good time, and we keep the tips short so people don’t sit out for too long.
Please come dance with us when you’re in the area. Check the schedule on our website: cas-sd.yolasite.com. We are tentatively scheduled to dance Sept. 29, Oct. 13 and Oct. 27, but it is best to call to make sure we are dancing. We dance in Hall B at the Emerald Square Dance Center.

Single Trees had a super fun month this August. We started out the month with our annual picnic held out near Mt. Pisgah off Seavey Loop at the country property of one of our members, Suzanne Peterson. This property had been hit hard by the ice storm we had here in January, but you wouldn’t know it, looking at it now. It was in pristine condition as always! Thank you, Suzanne, for hosting once again.
As usual we had about 25 members and guests on hand with hamburgers and hot dogs grilled to perfection by newer member John Olson from the Medford area. We all brought side dishes and desserts to go with. We ate and talked, talked and ate, and none of us wanted to dance, feeling replete and in need of a good sit down. The day was perfect—not too hot as it was overcast. There was no blueberry picking this year as the berries ripened early in July.
We had two fun-filled dances on the 3rd and 4th Fridays. We had lots of guests from clubs to the north of us whose clubs do not dance during the summer. We appreciate their support.
In September, we are sponsoring a new caller dance on the 14th with several new callers or callers getting back into the game having just gone through Daryl Clendenin’s and Roger Putzler’s zoom caller class. We are excited to hear them call and get the opportunity to dance to them. On Friday, Sept. 20 we will hold our regular mainstream dance called by Janet Geiger and cued by Jackie Gale with a Sock Hop/Back To School theme. On Sept. 27, the 4th Friday,, we will host a Pie and Ice Cream Social Dance with Mark Wheeler calling and Christina Corelli cueing. We expect to have a great time dancing and visiting with our guests.
In October we are hosting three dances. On the 2nd Friday we will have newer up and coming caller Shawn McKamey with Jackie Gale cueing. On the 3rd Friday we will feature K.C. Curtis and Sandy Harris with a Western Hoedown/Chili Feed theme. Our 4th Friday dance with be a Halloween Bash with Roger Putzler and Christina Corelli. Please come join us.

We have enjoyed having Tim and Cheryl Hagey back with us. Cheryl is dancing a little bit more each time. Sometimes they bring their oldest grandson, Killian, with them. Killian square dances which is a ton of fun. We remember when he was tiny dancing on his Grandpa Tim's shoulder. Then he would dance tandem with Grandma. We're thrilled.
We enjoy dancers from other clubs who join us from time to time.
Please come and join us from 4 - 6 on Sundays. Casual dress always. There is a plus class from 3:00 - 4:00 so there is a little overlap which means we can mingle and meet others dancers and encourage them to stay and dance with us!
Please call our president, David Lajoie at 541-520-7311 to make sure we are, indeed, dancing. We rarely go dark, but it's still best to make sure.

Our regular dances are now at The First Baptist Church, 125 NW 10th St., Corvallis, OR, 97330. Starting September 28, we will be dancing on the second and fourth Saturdays, 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. We will be dark November 9 in order to support and visit Sweet Homes’s Veterans Day Dance. Look for our flyers or for updates each month.
We have been advertising our free square dance lesson September 26, 7:00 - 8:30 p.m, at the Corvallis Community Center, 2601 NW Tyler St., Corvallis. We are hoping for a good turnout for our Instructors, Bruce Lowther, Caller, and Judy Russell, Cuer. Classes start October 3 and continue weekly.
All of us appreciate the Hacklemans for hosting our fall planning meeting. We all know it is not an easy job, even if everyone shows up with food. No matter how we try, we always run late. There was plenty of food for seconds, some socializing, and there was business to discuss. They have earned a big thank you from the club.
I hope you are feeling the change of mood. People are getting out and about. Now is the time to reach out and invite your friends to dance just for the fun of it. An evening of dancing is better than any handful of pills.

Our first dance in September was a Tail Gate party with hot dogs provided, and the club members brought finger food to go along with the hot dogs.
We had a general membership meeting in August that finalized the election of officers. We have changed our Annual meeting date to March so the names will be correct for the state directory.
We have also changed our start time to 6:30 p.m. for pre rounds and pre plus. The mainstream dancing will start at 7:00 p.m. and end at 9:45 p.m. There will be an open break for refreshments and eating and then we will go back to dancing.
There is a board meeting on September 14, so stay tuned for upcoming dance themes. KC Curtis (Linda) and Stephanie Lozano (John) are the club caller and cuer. Come and join us for a nice evening of fun and good friends.

We had an amazing campout at Frank and Marianne Cawrse's over Labor Day. Over 75 people attended the Silo Dance, where our new caller, Shaun McKamey, climbed the grain silo to call. We played cards, croquet and other games, and had hayrides and potlucks.
Our next dance is our Wild, Wild West dance on October 5. Please visit us at lebanonsquarecirclers.com or Like us on Facebook!

We were dark for most of August due to lack of attendance from the few dancers who attend on Thursdays. We start dancing again on September 5 and Rumba lessons will start on September 19 at 7:30 to 8:15. We are hoping to have more dancers show up and enjoy the opportunity to learn a higher level of dance.
ReVuNQ is also sponsoring two-step lessons starting on September 15 at 3:30 to 5:30, taught by Stephanie Lozano and Marilyn Schmit. This is to assist the youth for a competition next May. Silver City Squares will be teaching Waltz for the other rhythm used in competition.
Our cuers are Randy Lewis and Debbie Olson. Marilyn Schmit assists when Debbie is not in attendance.

Portland Area Council -
Link
For the first time in memory, the Portland Area Council hosted a community dance to promote square dancing to prospective students. The idea was to use our regular 5th Friday dance to promote the lessons that the PAC clubs will be offering this fall. The dance was a huge success.
Because Scott Zinser donated his calling services, we were able to have free admission for all. We distributed a flyer listing all the PAC clubs, their lesson dates and times, and a brief promotional blurb about each club. (The clubs provided the content for the blurbs.) A second flyer included information for TVC clubs located close to Portland since we anticipated that some of the prospects might find it more convenient to attend a club on Portland’s westside. We had sign-in sheets and name tags for dancers, allowing us to obtain contact information for the prospects.
We had 22 brand new dancers and 40 angels, giving us 7 squares on the floor, with a good ratio of angels to students. All PAC clubs were represented, and we also had several angels from the TVC—we really appreciated the support!
Our initial survey indicates that more than half the prospective students who attended the community dance have followed through by attending at least one lesson at a PAC club. We hope that they will continue to dance. Our 5th Friday dance in November will be a new dancer jamboree, where we hope to see many of these same faces.
All in all, this was a very fun and successful evening.
See you on a dance floor!

Chaps & Petticoats -

After a summer of being dark, Chaps hosted our first dance of the season on Friday, September 6th. It was a little unusual: Scott’s foot is still recovering so he grabbed a chair and called. We had a square of Chaps dancers and a square of visitors (plus some extras), and Mark McDonald let us choose what we wanted to Round Dance to. We had a group of enthusiastic dancers who created excitement and a fun, fun dance night. Good to have everyone back!
We offer one more free night of Mainstream lessons on Sunday, Sept. 22 from 5-7 PM. Angels are appreciated and always get in free, so please join us Sunday, bring a friend, and introduce them to square dance. Students can pay as you go to continue lessons or inquire about pay-in-full discounts.
Chaps will host our annual Pirate Dance on Friday, October 4 at Maplewood Grange. Scott will open with Plus at 7:30. Mainstream begins at 8 pm, and Julia Buchheit will cue Rounds between tips. You can come as a pirate to win a costume prize; the audience will be your judge. Try very hard though as each year Scott adds an item to his pirate costume and enjoys having you walk the plank, matey! Three prizes will be awarded: Couple, Male and Female.
Our third Friday dance is October 18 - we open with Sandra Pinion cueing Rounds at 7:30 pm with Terry Halley as the featured Caller from 8 – 10 pm (Rounds between tips).
Mark your calendars and bring you appetites on November 24 to our “Turkey Dinner” New-dancer JAMBOREE. Look for the “Turkey Trot” Flyer in the OFN under “New Dancer Jamborees” with Scott Zinser and Dave Cooper as Caller and Cuer.
Does your Club hold a Chaps and Petticoats Banner? I would love to plan a visitation, so please let me know.

The Cut-Ups and our guests enjoyed the outdoor dance floor during the hot summer days, but now fall is upon us, and that brings school and square dance classes. Scott Zinser will capably teach our classes again. Lessons begin on September 12 and be open until the third week, September 26. First lesson for new students is free, so invite someone.
Craig Abercrombie will be calling and cueing the first Saturday dance on October 5, which is the Cut-Ups anniversary dance. Come help celebrate! The 4th Saturday dance will be dark as many members will be enjoying the Seaside Sashay.
Line dance lessons are ongoing with Lynn and Dave on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons. Bingo at the Barn is happening on the second and fourth Friday nights, doors open at 6:00 PM, games start promptly at seven.
There will not be a pancake breakfast this fall, but we will be doing another craft show on November 16. It is a good time to do some Christmas shopping!

Happy Hoppers are looking forward to their September 21 dance in Vancouver, Washington at Grange #82. We hope you will join us at 7:00 pm for Mainstream with some Plus and Rounds called and cued by Craig Abercrombie.
Our club had our first session of Basic/Mainstream and Plus Lessons on Monday, September 9. Plus at 6:30 followed by Basic/Mainstream at 7:30 pm. It was nice to see new people eager to learn about square dancing. A big thank you to our members for being so supportive and encouraging everyone to feel welcome. Lesson students and club angels filled the floor with 8 squares! We are also glad to see some new faces stepping into Plus lessons. Five squares enjoyed dancing and learning together.
October is sneaking up fast. Happy Hoppers will dance October 5 with Daryl Clendenin calling and cueing a Plus dance with Rounds. Craig Abercrombie follows on October 19 calling and cueing a Mainstream dance with some Plus and Rounds. Come and join us, 7:00-9:30 pm.
We are also planning a Beginner's Dance on Monday October 28 (costumes are optional). This dance will be 7:30-9:00 pm.
Happy Hopper's Clothing Sale will be Monday, October 21 from 6:00-8:30 pm.
We do encourage our members to continue to travel and visit other clubs and festivals. Such a great way to socialize and build friendships!

We started our Social Square Dance lessons on Wednesday, September 11, welcoming 17 students. Our second free taste occurred on September 18—after the deadline for this edition of the OFN. We will provide an update on lessons in the November OFN. We’ll continue with lessons every Wednesday from 7-8:30 pm through mid-December. The venue is Bridgeport United Church of Christ, 621 NE 76th Ave., Portland 97213.
Time’s running short to register for our mostly annual fall square dance festival, Scares and Squares. This year, our three-day event will take place October 11-13 (corresponding to our regular dance weekend), so no conflict with Seaside Sashay! Our featured callers are Hunter Keller and Eric Henerlau. We’ll have 14 hours of dancing at all levels from Social Square Dance to C-2. We will also have an opportunity to learn some line dances, and we’ll have some round dancing with Rikki Lobato cueing, too. Something for everyone! We encourage dancers to wear Halloween costumes on Saturday night. We’ll be dancing at the Beaverton Elks Lodge off Canyon Road near OR 217, so this will be a convenient location for all our friends in Washington County, as well as Portland and Vancouver. Check out rosetownramblers.com or the flyer under Special Dances on this site for details and registration materials.

The August TVC meeting was held on the 26th at the Aloha Grange. Nineteen members were present as President Sally Duyck presided. The main topic of discussion was the content and wording of the document revisions being worked on. The TVC Practices & Procedures and By-Laws documents are currently being revised to bring them in line with current needs and requirements. Many things have changed since the Covid epidemic and technology advances have made things like the telephone committee somewhat antiquated. Among other things, we now have Zoom as an alternative to in-persons meetings. Also discussed was the preparation for the September Federation Meeting and dance at the Kinton Grange.
The Council highly recommends that all TVC dancers attend the anniversary dances held by other member clubs. On October 5th the Sunset Promenaders will celebrate their 39th anniversary. Held at the Hillsboro IOOF Hall, a lasagna dinner will be served prior to the dance. Darrell Kalmbach calling and Tami Helms cueing. Then on the 19th the Mix 'N Mingle will celebrate their 40th anniversary at the Winona Grange. There will be cake and M&M's with Randy Dibble calling and Julie Stiers cueing. See their reports below for details.
Since the OFN is published about the 20th of the month, you still have time to plan on attending the TriSquares 26th anniversary on September 27th. Terry Halley & K.C. Curtis calling with Cuer Sandra Pinion. It will be held at the Kinton Grange with Rounds at 7:00, Plus at 7:15, Mainstream and Rounds at 7:30 with 4th tip Plus.
The TVC is proud to announce the nomination of Darrell and Erin Kalmbach for the 2025 Randall Award. There have been nine previous Randall Award recipients from the TVC.

Not a lot to report this time around. We have our badges for the Seaside Sashay now and encourage everyone to do the same. It is always a good time to dance and to see folks we have danced with in the past.
Our lessons this summer were a success. We saw a great deal of growth in the
mainstream dancers and lots of growth on those that chose to learn plus. In addition to all of that, we had a lot of fun dancing.
Our dances this month will feature Daryl Clendenin as our caller and everyone knows how entertaining he makes the dances. We hope to see everyone on the 4th and the 18th. They will be good warm-ups for the Sashay.

In years past the Eager Beavers would have a "Dine Out Monday" where we would go out to eat after our dance. We are a Plus club which dances every Monday at 1 PM so it worked out well to have a late lunch or early dinner, or "Linner". Prior to Covid there were many restaurants which had the capacity to seat 30+ folks more or less together. Azteca was one of our favorite places to go. They would happily re-arrange the tables to accommodate our group, had good food, and it did not hurt that they had Happy Hour Margaritas for $2.50! We got to know the staff on a first name basis! Typically our official Dine Out Monday was held on the 5th Monday of the month but that was not often enough for many members. Then Covid hit and not only were we not dancing or going out anymore, many of our favorite eating places had gone out of business or changed to a carry-out only business. Now, some four years later we have decided to try the Dine Out Monday again. We are finding it a little more difficult to find restaurants with ability to seat a group. Gone are Azteca, McGraths Fishhouse, and recently, Cracker Barrel. We will just keep looking.
In August we had four dances averaging 3 squares and an occasional four. No theme dances, just normal Plus dances on warm summer days. Luckily the weather did not force us to cancel a dance. Other clubs were not so fortunate. We gained two new members so we are slowly growing. Several of our members performed at the State Fair.
In October we will have a visitation to the Sunset Promenaders 39th Anniversary on the 5th and then back to our hall for a costume optional dance on the 28th, a couple days after the Seaside Sashay. The rest of the month will be our regular 1PM Plus dance at the Aloha Grange each Monday. Darrell Kalmbach keeps us moving and Jeanine Norden cues soothing phase II and III rounds with an occasional IV. Lane Clem has been a great help by filling in for Jeanine while she was recovering from recent surgery. Also thanks to Tami Helms who also filled in.

August for the Hoedowners was a time of confusion. Where did the hot weather go? I love the sound of rain on the roof but not in August with cool temperatures. We were prepared for the scorching weather we had in July but, it never showed. On August 10th we had our Knobby Knees and Popsicles Dance on the 10th with Mark Wheeler calling, and Randy on Rounds. On August 24th we entertained the dancers with a Back-to-School Sock Hop. Randy Dibble was our guest cuer and, one of our favorites, Connie Clark, cuing. Maybe we should declare August the month of tomatoes, cucumbers and plums and stop worrying about the weather.
Our October plans are simple; we will sponsor our Oktoberfest dance on the 12th and see you in Seaside the weekend of October 25th for the Seaside Sashay.
Our lessons will be in full swing, and we’re excited to see the turnout.

Yippee! M&M’s are turning 40 and the celebration will take place on Oct 19th with a Plus dance at the Winona Grange. Randy Dibble is calling, Julie Stiers is cueing and of course there will be cake and ice cream. (What would a birthday be without that?) We’d love to have you join us. You might even go home with some M&M’s... all you have to do is come closest to guessing how many are in the jar(s).

Oak Hills Squares continued to be active through the August heat, and our enthusiasm did not wane! Several members brought fruits of the season (tomatoes, berries, grapes, pears) to share with happy dancers. At this writing we have scheduled lessons on Monday evenings beginning September 9th, continuing through Sept 23rd. We look forward to meeting new friends with a love for square dancing.

August has been a wonderful time of travel, camping, getting things done around the house and some Dog Days of Summer. Washington and Oregon state Fairs had Demo Square Dances that many dancers from our club and around the area participated in.
Our membership drive took place August 17 at Squirrel Fest in Longview WA at the Civic Center Circle. Along with a booth for information we had a street dance for 3 hours. Terry Halley called Basic to Plus. Our Dancers were able to pull in many non-dancers from the crowd. Terry would call and instruct Basic dances. The weather was wonderful and there was a large crowd. We also had many Dancers from Columbia River Dancers, Cougar Squares, St. Helens, and Happy Hoppers. It was an amazing time with advertisement on Facebook, Podcast on local radio station and coverage by the Daily News.
Kelso Senior Center is still undergoing renovations. We are hopeful to be back in Catlin hall (Kelso Sr. Center) by mid-September or Early October.

The month of August surely went by fast, and while we were dark, we fit in our annual picnic at Snyder Park in Sherwood plus two visitations, to the Bachelors & Bachelorettes in Oregon City and to the Silver City Squares in Silverton.
For October our lessons continue at the Kinton Grange on Sunday afternoons, with our cuer Sandra Pinion teaching Phase 2 Waltz from 2:00-3:15, and our caller Terry Halley teaching Entry Level Mainstream from 3:30-5:30. We plan to visit the Sunset Promenaders on October 5th for their 39th anniversary dance. On October 11th we are DARK due to a scheduling conflict with the grange. And on October 25th we'll have our "Come As You Aren't!" dance with Terry calling and Sandra cueing. So put on your favorite costume (however corny it might be) and come join us for some Halloween fun!

We did a demonstration dance at the Tillamook County Fair the first week of August.
Wavesteppers dance at the Tillamook Senior Center from 4-6pm on Tuesday each week. Our caller is Anthony Egan. We are working on having lessons begin September 24th.
The address of the Tillamook Senior Center is 316 Stillwell Avenue, Tillamook. Located on the corner of 4th and Stillwell there is no on site parking and little street parking. The huge Safeway parking lot is directly across the street. Our dances are held weekly on Tuesdays from 4:00 to 6:00 and we always have food and snacks.
