Publicity Report

I hope everyone’s classes are going well and that you and your students are having fun. There are several new dancers’ jamborees scheduled this year that your students can attend. Experience dancers, please consider taking your students to a jamboree at another club. They will appreciate your support and will benefit from dancing with other callers and dancers.

Here is a handy list of the jamborees that I found prior to this issues’s publication. Click on the thumbnail to see the whole thing. Be sure to check the Jamboree Section in the OFN for the most updated list. Clubs can add jamborees throughout the month.

We had two good dances in September but had to cancel our first dance on Oct. 13 due to lack of dancers. One of our members Chris Vanderlinde will be unable to dance wit us for some time because she broke her wrist at the Roseburg weekend with Jet Roberts on the evening of the 5th. Heal up soon, Chris! We need you. We hope to have our tentatively scheduled dances on Sunday, Oct. 27, Nov. 10 and Nov. 24. Check the schedule at cas-sd.yolasite.com but always call Fred Beisse at 541-683-2522 to be sure we are dancing better yet get on the email list so you will be notified.

We were delighted to have a new dancer join us at our last dance in September. Katie was an excellent addition, and we hope to see more of her if she stays in the area. We would like to encourage anyone who has moved to the area or is visiting the area to join us. We are all happy to have people dance with us, singles or couples.

We dance in Hall B (entrance behind the building) of the Emerald Square Dance Center at 2095 Yolanda St., in Springfield, OR. We dance to recorded music by such calls as Darryl Lipscomb and Bronc Wise from 1:30PM to 3:30PM often on the second and fourth Sundays. It is always casual.

See you in a square,

Gaynor Hintz

In September we lost one of our “star” dancers who had been a member of our club for over 24 years since she first learned mainstream back in 2000. Judy Melendrez was a fun-loving dancer who attended as many dancers as she possibly could over the years. She will be sorely missed. On Sept. 27 we stopped the dance and had a small remembrance for her and then danced a round for her. In early October on Saturday the 5th, Chris Vanderlinde, a Life-time Member of our club, fell at the dance festival in Roseburg, breaking her wrist and damaging one of her vertebrae. She will be down for the count for some time to come and will be greatly missed as she has been very diligent about supporting all the clubs in the area as well as dance weekends around the state. But we know she’ll be back as soon as her bone heals and her back will tolerate it. Good healing, Chris!

We held three dances in September. One was at the behest of Roger Putzler who wanted to give the latest “zoom” caller class a chance for some “mic” time with live dancers on the floor in front of them. Four new or refreshing callers were there including Renee Ruud who was a protegee of Les Seeley a few years back. We enjoyed being able to help them out. The next Friday we held our regular mainstream with every third tip plus dance. This was our Sock Hop dance with Janet Geiger calling and Jackie Gale cueing. Our fourth Friday dance was called by Mark Wheeler and cued by Jackie Gale who graciously substituted in at the last minute for Christina Corelli. This was our pie and ice cream social which was a treat.

In October we will hold three dances once again. We are transitioning back to a second and fourth Friday format, but until December, we will also have a 3rd Friday dance, it looks like.

Presumably on the 8th we will have our 2nd Friday mainstream dance but at the time of this writing I do not have any information on that one. In November on the 15th we will hold an “Honoring Our Veterans” dance with Mark Wheeler and Sandy Harris, and on the 22nd we will have our Thanksgiving Celebration with Bruce Lowther and Sandy Harris.

Please try to join us for one of our fun dances. There is always a lot of camaraderie, fun themes and decorations, good food, and good music provided by our callers and cuers.

See you soon in a square,

Gaynor Hintz

Spin Cycle Squares - Link
We're dark for Scares and Squares October 13 which is up in the Portland area.

Tim, Cheryl Hagey and their grandson, Killian come for beginner lessons and stay for Spin Cycle Squares.  Cheryl gets floor time, and Killian is polishing his skills as he's already graduated from a class but gets floor time with Roger's class and also Spin Cycle Squares.  He's a good dancer.  He actually started when he was pretty small riding on Grandpa Tim's shoulder.  Cheryl had hopes of being done with physical therapy the end of September, but now she won't be through with therapy until the end of December.  She can't wait.  We are so happy to have the three of them back to dancing with us.

One of our dancers, Chris Vanderlinde, suffered a fall at the Country Fever Dance Weekend in Roseburg on Saturday and broke her wrist and cracked a lumbar vertebrae.  We pray for swift recovery for her.

We enjoy dancers from other clubs who join us from time to time. Please come and join us from 4 to 6 on Sundays.  It’s casual dress always.  There is a plus class from 3:00 to 4:00 so there is a little overlap which means we can mingle and meet other dancers and encourage them to stay and dance with us!

Please call our president, David Lajoie at 541-520-7311 to make sure we are, indeed, dancing.  We rarely go dark, but it's still best to make sure.

We dance on the third Saturdays at the Emerald Dance Center on Yolanda in Springfield with plus at 7 and then mainstream from 7:30 to 10:00 Mainstream with rounds. Christina Corelli is cueing.  From November through June Roger Putzler will be calling. We look forward to a Veteran's Dance in November honoring those who have served our country.

We learned that a former member, Margaret Feller, has passed away.  Margaret moved to Federal Way, Washington to be near family following the death of her husband, Erich. Thoughts and prayers for her family.

Whirl-A-Ways will visit Spin Cycle Squares in the near future.  They dance Sundays from 4;30 to 6:30.

Please come join us the third Saturday in each month!

Happy dancing!

November is slowly arriving, and we edge closer to the New Dancer Dance on December 15 at 1:00 p.m. We will be thinking about snacks to bring, along with door prizes for the dancers.

The list of New Dancer Dances was recently sent to the callers and cuers in our area so they would know when and where the dances are and at what time.

The members are always ready to help with questions that others may have. You can find our contact information on our website, www.ccca-or.org.

Our regular dances are now at The First Baptist Church, 125 NW 10th St., Corvallis, OR, 97330. Dancing begins at 7:00 p.m. with rounds, then mainstream, and finally plus every third tip. We all head for home at 10:00 p.m. feeling pleasantly energized.

We began our new season with a tasty theme, Banana Split Dance, on September 28. With Shaun McKamey calling and Sandy Harris cueing, we had an enjoyable dance. We appreciated our visitors from Lebanon, Sweet Home, and Salem Swinging Stars. The real fun came when Shaun tried calling plus with a six-sided square, which went smoothly until one call got the dancers so tangled they were laughing as Shaun said, “We won’t try that one again.” The banana splits disappeared quickly and were much appreciated by all that attended.

October 12 was October Fest with Sandy Harris as caller and cuer. October 26 is our Halloween Dance with caller Roger Putzler and cuer Jackie Gale. We are dark November 9 for a visitation to Sweet Home’s Veterans’ Day dance. November 23 is our Friendsgiving Dance celebrating the beginning of the holidays season with caller Roger Putzler and cuer Jackie Gale. Our only December dance is a potluck on December 14. Craig Abercrombie is caller and cuer.

New Dancer lesson began on September 26. Having the first lesson free seemed to have worked. We had five squares, counting angels and new students. Everyone had a great time and most did sign up for lessons. I like dancing weekly, meeting interesting new people, helping others learn the calls, and exercising. Even though I have danced many years, I generally learn something new each time. Bruce Lowther and Lila complimented the students on their quick understanding of the calls.

Seven Corvallis Squares members enjoyed their September 20 visit at the Alliance plus dance in Albany’s IOOF Hall. Caller Bruce Lowther and cuer Judy Russell kept us on our toes with some challenging calls. It was a fun dance even if a few of us (me?) felt we were not up to the challenge. The mainstream class is going well with five students, returning dancers, and angels helping.

Our second dance in September provided hot dogs, and the members brought finger foods to go along with them. There was a lot to choose from. The second dance in October has a Harvest theme.

There is still room for more people on our dance floor. Come and enjoy KC Curtis and Stephanie Lozano provide the music and calls/cues for the dancers.

Our New Dancer Dance is December 14 at 6:30 p.m. New dancers can come and get their Mid-Willamette New Dancer booklet signed in order to work their way to earning the Ambassador bar for their badge.

We met in October by Zoom with our new chairperson, Sandy Harris, in charge of the meeting. Currently all members have renewed their membership. We have had two retirements from the activity.

We discussed the upcoming Mid-Winter weekend and the possibility of a round dance weekend or full day of dancing, and some teaches. Stay tuned for further details

Marilyn.

ReVuN'Q
Our Rumba class is small, but it is progressing well. Most are returning dancers and know the movements. The later session of all rhythm dancing was not well attended, but requests for certain music is helping to fill the time, and to work on moves that need a little attention.

We are discussing possible New Year’s Eve activities but have hit a snag because our cuer has been booked elsewhere for the evening. There is a new dancer dance in our area at the same time, so we are not sure how many dancers would attend. Time will tell.

Happy Fall Y'all. We are excited for cooler temperatures outside and plenty of warmth and friendship inside our hall. The Annual Corn & Cluck dance was a great dance with the Chicken races and a wonderful dinner. Congratulations to our winners, Janet and Nancy. We hope they enjoyed all the goodies.

We are having a Halloween Dance on October 18. Wear a costume and come join the fun. November has three Fridays. Watch our Facebook page to see if we are dancing on the fifth Friday. Our New Dancer Dance is December 6 with a Recycled Clothing Sale. The Christmas Dance is December 20.

We are having a blast with our nineteen new students. They are learning by leaps and bounds. See you on the dance floor.

We are seeing the benefits of the free community dance that we offered on the fifth Friday in August. Many PAC clubs have students who heard about dancing at the community dance.

To continue our theme of promoting lessons and encouraging newer dancers, our fifth Friday dance in November will be a new dancer jamboree. The jamboree will be co-hosted by River City Dancers at the Milwaukie Community Club, 10666 SE 42nd Ave., Milwaukie. We’ll dance from 7-9:30 pm. Darrell Kalmbach will be calling, and Tami Helms will be cueing. We hope to see lots of angels there!

Chaps & Petticoats - Link
Chaps and Petticoats Mainstream lessons are in full swing. While we did not meet our new dancer goal, we happily welcomed four students and decided to run with it. Thank you to Scott Zinser, who restarted the program four times, and our loyal angels. We will continue Mainstream lessons each Sunday 5-7 pm.

Our Pirate Dance, held Friday, October 4, had two squares dancing and spirits were energetic. Costume winners were: Charlynn Newton, Terry Halley, and Lezlie Miller & Jay of Bachelors & Bachelorettes. Scott Zinser received an honorable mention. Julia Buchheit cued a fabulous set of rounds; thanks to all who made this dance fun.

Scott will call our dance on Friday, November 1, and Lane Clem will cue - no theme, just dance. Chaps will be dark on Friday, November 15 so that we can prepare to host our Turkey Trot Jamboree for new dancers on Sunday, November 24 from 4:30 - 7:00 pm. Angels, please invite your students to come, maybe even carpool, as we serve a full Turkey Dinner in addition to the dance. Scott will open with squares, Dave Cooper will be our cuer, and we anticipate a full hall, with food served in shifts beginning around 5:30 pm.

On Sunday November 24, we will be bringing our students and club members to a visitation to Chaps and Petticoats Turkey dinner and new dancer dance. Our Scares and Squares dance weekend is in the books, and we are thrilled to report that we had a marvelous event. We had two stellar callers, Eric Henerlau and Hunter Keller, cuer Rikki Lobato, and line dance teacher Clara Daikh. In addition to traditional squares from SSD through C-2, we learned a cha-cha, several line dances, and a barn dance. We saw many of our Portland area friends and were excited to welcome dancers from Tampa, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, Eugene, Grants Pass, and British Columbia. Our hosts at the Beaverton Elks Lodge enjoyed watching us dance almost as much as we enjoyed doing it, and we shared lots of information with them about local clubs and lessons.

We get a chance to rest our weary feet for a week, and then our lessons resume on October 23, continuing Wednesdays through December 18, when we will take a three week break for Christmas and New Year’s holidays.

Our next monthly social dance will be November 9, with the always entertaining Daryl Clendenin at the mic for our theme of Pass the Pumpkin. We’ll round out 2024 with our Cool Yule dance on September 14, Seattle’s Vance Morrison calling. The social dances go from 7-9:30 at the Oak Grove Community Club.

The September TVC meeting was held on the 23rd at the Aloha Grange. Twenty three members were present as President Sally Duyck presided. The main topic of discussion was the approval of the content and wording of the TVC Practices & Procedures and By-Laws documents. After some discussion, a motion to approve the revisions was made and approved. The documents are now available on the TVC website (see above link) by clicking the "Documents" tab. Also discussed were the results of the September Federation Meeting and dance at the Kinton Grange. Past TVC President Dale Brabham reported a successful dance weekend with a memorable dinner for our guests. The TVC hosted the Federation meeting on Sunday with several favorable comments from attendees.

The Council decided to not have a 5th Saturday November dance and instead is recommending that all dancers attend the Portland Area Council 5th Friday PAC Jamboree Dance on November 29th. This is a New Dancers Jamboree to be held at the Milwaukie Community Club, 10666 SE 42nd Ave, Milwaukie, OR 97222. It is important to get your current and recently graduated students attending dances. Jamborees are an excellent way to introduce them to our activity and to support them. Organize a carpool and show them a good time.

The TVC encourages Plus dancers to attend the anniversary dance on November 7th at the Promenaders Plus 10th anniversary. Held at the Hillsboro IOOF Hall, Darrell Kalmbach and Tami Helms will be calling and cueing. See their report below for details.

Since the OFN is published about the 20th of the month, you still have time to plan on attending the Seaside Sashay on October 25th and 26th. Held at the Seaside Civic & Convention Center, callers Adam Christman & Craig Abercrombie with cuer Tami Helms will be featured.

Be sure to vote! As square dancing is America’s dance, so is the right and privilege to vote.

As for our club, we are in a time of sorrow. We lost a club member, Betsy Hurt, this month and also have felt the pain of our Caller, Daryl Clendenin as he morns the loss of his daughter. We would ask that fellow dancers keep those families in your prayers.

Our mainstream and plus classes are going well. We will be starting a new dancer’s class in January. Daryl and Renee Ruud are doing a great job.

Our November dances will feature Daryl calling and cueing. Come join us on the first and fifteenth. We might even talk him into doing either Running Bear of just some hot hash. Either or both can keep you on your toes.

Hope all have a very happy Thanksgiving.

Eager Beavers - Link
The Eager Beavers have had the good fortune to welcome a number of guests joining our members, giving us an average of four squares. Darrell Kalmbach has been challenging us with intermittent workshop moves to keep us on our toes, and Jeanine Norden cues the most wonderful Phase III and IV rounds.

We started September with our Labor Day Dance, and later in the month several members attended the memorial for Paul Swenson, our founding member along with his wife, Dotti. Paul passed away in July at the age of 102. It took four large displays around the room to document 102 years of photos and mementos! Paul visited Eager Beavers until his last year of life, and he will be missed.

November will bring our annual Veterans Day dance on November 11th where all veterans are thanked for their service and admitted to the dance for free. Our other themed dance is the Thanksgiving Dance on Monday the 25th.

We dance Plus at the Aloha Grange every Monday afternoon from 1:00 to 3:00, and would love to have you join us! For current dancing information, please see our website at http://EagerBeavers.info. (see link above).

Well, it’s November, the last month of the fall season and time to "get ready for all the fun colors and to break out the winter clothes". It’s also a month with lots of special days: All Saint’s Day, Diwali, Daylight Savings Time Begins, Election Day, Veterans Day, and Thanksgiving to just name a few.

M&M’s are dark on November 2nd. Fun fact - it is also known as Look For Circles Day, Bison Day, Book Lovers Day, All Souls Day, Deviled Egg Day, Ballet Day and Pumpkin Destruction Day!

M&M’s WILL be dancing with Randy Dibble and Katie Marteny on November 16th. Fun fact - it is also known as Button Day, Tolerance Day and National Fast Food Day.

Many dancers continued our good cheer throughout September at Oak Hills Rec Center on Monday nights. We welcomed Julie and Nathan in our lessons all month, and they are picking up the cues quickly. Also in September, several of our dancers joined Hoedowners for a pirate-themed dance and reported that it was an amazingly good time.

As of this writing, our club will enjoy Halloween decorations and treats in October, with no plans for special dances in November. All are welcome to join our group every Monday evening at 6:30 to 8:30 at Oak Hills Rec Center, NW 153rd Ave. Beaverton.

September went by so fast! R Square D had 2 dances. A Sunflower Dance to celebrate late summer and the Annual Neil Diamond Tribute Dancer. We had dancers from Columbia River Dancers, Cougar Squares, St. Helens, and Happy Hoppers, Prairie Steppers, and Hayshakers attended. Both Craig Abercrombie and Susan Healea did wonderful calling and cueing.

Our lessons started on September 11th. We had a large turnout of new dancers and some returning dancers. Thanks to our many angels that help the new dancers. Craig Abercrombie is teaching. Lessons are Wednesday, Plus at 6:30p and Basic, Mainstream @7:30-9P. Catlin Grange, 205 Shawnee St. Kelso, WA 98626.

Kelso Senior Center is still undergoing renovations. We are hopeful to be back in Catlin Hall (Kelso Sr. Center) by November.

R Square D is dark on 10/26 to attend the Seaside Sashay in Seaside Oregon. Looking forward to November with our Veterans Day tribute on November 8th and Pie Potluck dance on November 23rd. Everyone is invited to bring a favorite pie (fruit or meat or veggie).

In September we had a full month, with two dances including our anniversary dance with Terry Halley and K.C.Curtis harmonizing together & Sandra Pinion cuing, with terrific music and 5 squares on the floor - It was really great! Our lessons started on Sunday afternoons - 8 people signed up for waltz and 16 for Mainstream, off to a good start.

In November lessons are continuing Sunday afternoons, 2:00-3:15 for Waltz with Sandra Pinion and 3:30-5:30 for Mainstream with Terry Halley. However, on the 3rd lessons will be held at the Twin Oaks Airpark (3 miles west of our grange) at 12405 SW River Road, Hillsboro - and even though it says "road closed" it is open to local traffic going to the airpark. Lessons on the 10th and 17th will be back at Kinton Grange. On the 24th there will be NO lesson (due to the Chaps Turkey Trot Jamboree.) We're having our first dance "The Golden Oldies" on November 8th, and our 2nd dance is "The Grateful Harvest Pie Fest" on the 22nd, both dances with Terry Halley calling and Sandra Pinion cuing. (Like pie? You'll like this dance!)

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone.
