I know a lot of people look forward to the return of fall, but I'm going to miss the sunshine this year. On the plus side, we're entering "decoration season". We'd love to see photos of your dance halls set up for the upcoming holidays.

Is your closet bulging at the seams? Are you hankering to recycle some of your square dance or round dance clothes? Or, have you moved on and are no longer able to join in the festivities?
Well, Mid-Winter Festival is fast approaching. For many of you it provides an opportunity to recycle a few or many of those outfits taking up space in your closets. For others, it is a sad time when you are saying, “I just can’t dance anymore”, and you want someone else to enjoy those beautiful outfits you have received so much pleasure wearing over the years.
But first let’s look closely at some key tips to selling your clothing items at Mid-Winter Festival 2025. Follow closely the online instructions and email your list of items in by January 18, 2025.
Note: If you are having any problems completing the form online, then by all means hand write it and mail it in. We will input it to the computer for you. Please email or call Sheila for assistance.
If you snail mail your list, it must be received by January 11, 2025.
Please, read the instructions very, very carefully.
Make sure the items are clean and in good repair. Square and Round dance clothing only, please.
Bring your items, listed by categories to simplify the tagging process for you to the consignment tables. Labels will be printed in the order that you have numbered them on the submission form.
If you have sets, keep/place them together. This will help you with the tagging process and may even help them to sell.
Please, be early to consignment. Be sure to check the hours and plan on Thursday afternoon (3:00 pm) or Friday morning (9:00 am) so they will be prominently placed on the racks for the opening sales activity Friday evening.
As with so many activities it is getting more and more difficult to get volunteers to help. Resale Clothing is one of those areas that require a large number of volunteers to make it available for all the dancers.
We can no longer accept clothing items at the festival that were not listed for consignment before the input deadline. We are sorry it has come to this. But we hope you will utilize the online submission process. Or you can hand write it and send it to us. Just print out the input/submission sheet for completion by hand. We want to help you recycle the many beautiful outfits that you all have.
As I said earlier, we require a large number of volunteers to assist during consignment and sale hours. We will accept any help, even if for just one (1) hour. So, contact the chair for Resale Clothing – Sheila - and let her know you want to help.
Don’t forget to pick up your returns by 10:00 a.m. on Sunday morning.
For assistance contact the following individual -- preferably by email.
Sheila Machado at sheilainsalem@hotmail.com or if you must call my phone at 503-884-0158.
Lauri Irene (Lund) Weidenhaft, 68, was born on May 8, 1956 at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eugene to her parents, Marvin S. Lund and Audrey E. Lund. She was the youngest of 3 siblings. The other two are Jack (deceased), married to Connie, and Susan, married to Don. They lived on South 19th Street in Springfield. She went to Brattain Elementary school. In 1968 they moved to a newer and larger home in Gamebird Village in Springfield. From there she went to Cal Young Junior High and Sheldon High School, where she graduated in 1974.
She had a love of horses ever since she was a little girl. Her parents would buy her Breyer horses as gifts, and she ended up with a large herd of them. Then in 1971, at age 15, her parents bought her a real Quarter Horse mare. She kept her at the barn on Game Farm Road and rode with her friend Cindy, who also had a horse there.
In 1972, she met another horse owner, Rick Weidenhaft. They dated for 2 years, then were engaged for 13 months.
Lauri started attending church with her mom at Wayside Open Bible Chapel in 1966. She asked Jesus to be her personal savior and became a born again Christian shortly after. Her mother often said, "You might be the only Bible someone reads today," so Lauri lived her life doing her best to be a good example of Jesus Christ's love to the world, and she passed that philosophy to her own family. After they started dating, she asked Rick to attend also. On November 8, 1975 they were married at Wayside Open Bible Chapel by Pastor Ray Rexius.
That same day, he carried her across the threshold of their new home. It, of course, had a barn and acreage for their 3 horses: a Quarter Horse a pair of Appaloosas, mother and son.
She was self driven and began seeking employment at an early age. Starting with picking beans in her teenage summers and then being a car hop at A&W on Coburg Road and at 29th and Willamette Street. After getting married, she worked at K-Mart, Fred Meyer, Al Beckett and Assoc. Realtors, then as a legal secretary for a local law firm.
Then children came along. In 1983 she had her first, a daughter, Megan, 5 weeks premature, and 3 years later, in 1986, a son, Eric, who was also early. They both had to spend 14 days in NICU before coming home. Both instances were difficult for Lauri because she was in one hospital and both babies needed to be transported to another hospital, but both kids grew up happy and healthy.
Lauri, wanting to work, but also be home with her kids, started an in-home childcare business. Megan was old enough at that time to be her little helper. She treated the kids with the same kindness, love, and compassion that she gave to her own. She strongly believed that everyone deserves to be welcomed, respected, encouraged, supported, and loved.
The year her kids started high school and middle school, respectively, Lauri got a job with the Springfield School District. A few years later, she applied and got hired on with the US Bankruptcy Court, finishing off her various careers at the US Courthouse.
Her hobbies included sewing, making all of us clothes, blankets, and pillows, raising various animals as pets, including dogs, cats, various rodents, fish, cows, chickens (her girlies, who provided us with delicious eggs), and horses (of course), jogging, bike riding, being in the church choir, gardening, brain puzzles including crosswords, sudoku, cryptograms, and Tetris, square dancing, and clog dancing, which lead to her becoming the cure and instructor of the Misty Valley Cloggers. The Misty Valley Cloggers performed at many events, including Oktoberfest, Bohemia Mining Days, the Festival of Trees, the Filbert Festival, as well as floats in parades in Springfield and Eugene. They also did performances for private events by request. She co-chaired, with her husband, the clogging program of the Oregon Mid-Winter Square Dance Festival from 1995 through 2024. To share her love of clog dancing, she taught clog dancing classes 11 months out of the year for beginners up through intermediate skill levels from 1994 through 2020.
Lauri was an incredible woman. She was a kind and generous woman. She was always willing to help those in need; there was nothing she wouldn't give or do to help someone. She was a wonderful caregiver and was always willing to be a nurse to those who needed assistance. She was fearless. She would not sit idly by in difficult situations. She was always willing to stand up for what was right and would defend those who needed protection. Her sense of humor was a constant joy to those around her. If she saw someone who was down, she did everything she could to alleviate their burdens and lift their spirits. She treated everyone like they were family and was never afraid to start up a conversation with a stranger. She often said, "Strangers are just friends you haven't met yet, and friends are the family you choose." She loved meeting new people and hearing their stories and sharing hers with them. She was a one-woman cheer squad that could whistle loud enough to make you feel like you could accomplish anything; you never had to wonder if she was in the audience. She was incredibly wise and would offer counsel to anyone who sought it. She had a great depth of life experience and a wide breadth of knowledge. Her deep love of animals wouldn't let her ignore an animal in need and she took in many strays and gave them a wonderful forever home. It also led to a relationship with local animal control. If there was a horse loose in the area (and one time an emu named Peaches), she would often receive a call and be asked to go help capture it safely, transport it, and sometimes house it temporarily until the owner could be located. Lauri was the most dependable person I have ever known. If she said she would do or take care of something, there was no doubt that it would be done. She was always calm in a crisis. If there was ever an emergency, you could count on her. Many friends and family contacted her in their hour of need and she was always there, day or night. Lauri was amazingly resilient and had an immense inner strength; she endured a great multitude of hardships in her life and still persevered and managed to hold her head high and smile. She was a loving and devoted wife and the best mom anyone could ever ask for. She will be dearly missed and remembered fondly forever. Everyone who had the privilege of having Lauri in their life is better for it.
Lauri died peacefully at home and went to be with Jesus in Heaven the evening of August 19th, 2024, with Rick, Megan, and Eric beside her.
There will be a Memorial Service on Saturday, October 12th at Springfield Faith Center at 2:00pm.

We have a short business meeting before our dances. We start dancing at 7:00 with Pre-Rounds and then from 7:30 to 9:30 is our square and round dance. The dances are called and cued by members of CCCA.
Respectfully submitted,
Christina Corelli
We were delighted to have a new dancer join us at our last dance in September. Katie was an excellent addition, and we hope to see more of her if she stays in the area. We would like to encourage anyone who has moved to the area or is visiting the area to join us. We are all happy to have people dance with us, singles or couples.
We dance in Hall B (entrance behind the building) of the Emerald Square Dance Center at 2095 Yolanda St., in Springfield, OR. We dance to recorded music by such calls as Darryl Lipscomb and Bronc Wise from 1:30PM to 3:30PM often on the second and fourth Sundays. It is always casual.
See you in a square,
Gaynor Hintz
We held three dances in September. One was at the behest of Roger Putzler who wanted to give the latest “zoom” caller class a chance for some “mic” time with live dancers on the floor in front of them. Four new or refreshing callers were there including Renee Ruud who was a protegee of Les Seeley a few years back. We enjoyed being able to help them out. The next Friday we held our regular mainstream with every third tip plus dance. This was our Sock Hop dance with Janet Geiger calling and Jackie Gale cueing. Our fourth Friday dance was called by Mark Wheeler and cued by Jackie Gale who graciously substituted in at the last minute for Christina Corelli. This was our pie and ice cream social which was a treat.
In October we will hold three dances once again. We are transitioning back to a second and fourth Friday format, but until December, we will also have a 3rd Friday dance, it looks like.
Presumably on the 8th we will have our 2nd Friday mainstream dance but at the time of this writing I do not have any information on that one. In November on the 15th we will hold an “Honoring Our Veterans” dance with Mark Wheeler and Sandy Harris, and on the 22nd we will have our Thanksgiving Celebration with Bruce Lowther and Sandy Harris.
Please try to join us for one of our fun dances. There is always a lot of camaraderie, fun themes and decorations, good food, and good music provided by our callers and cuers.
See you soon in a square,
Gaynor Hintz
Tim, Cheryl Hagey and their grandson, Killian come for beginner lessons and stay for Spin Cycle Squares. Cheryl gets floor time, and Killian is polishing his skills as he's already graduated from a class but gets floor time with Roger's class and also Spin Cycle Squares. He's a good dancer. He actually started when he was pretty small riding on Grandpa Tim's shoulder. Cheryl had hopes of being done with physical therapy the end of September, but now she won't be through with therapy until the end of December. She can't wait. We are so happy to have the three of them back to dancing with us.
One of our dancers, Chris Vanderlinde, suffered a fall at the Country Fever Dance Weekend in Roseburg on Saturday and broke her wrist and cracked a lumbar vertebrae. We pray for swift recovery for her.
We enjoy dancers from other clubs who join us from time to time. Please come and join us from 4 to 6 on Sundays. It’s casual dress always. There is a plus class from 3:00 to 4:00 so there is a little overlap which means we can mingle and meet other dancers and encourage them to stay and dance with us!
Please call our president, David Lajoie at 541-520-7311 to make sure we are, indeed, dancing. We rarely go dark, but it's still best to make sure.
Christina Corelli
We learned that a former member, Margaret Feller, has passed away. Margaret moved to Federal Way, Washington to be near family following the death of her husband, Erich. Thoughts and prayers for her family.
Whirl-A-Ways will visit Spin Cycle Squares in the near future. They dance Sundays from 4;30 to 6:30.
Please come join us the third Saturday in each month!
Happy dancing!
Christina Corelli

The list of New Dancer Dances was recently sent to the callers and cuers in our area so they would know when and where the dances are and at what time.
The members are always ready to help with questions that others may have. You can find our contact information on our website, www.ccca-or.org.

We began our new season with a tasty theme, Banana Split Dance, on September 28. With Shaun McKamey calling and Sandy Harris cueing, we had an enjoyable dance. We appreciated our visitors from Lebanon, Sweet Home, and Salem Swinging Stars. The real fun came when Shaun tried calling plus with a six-sided square, which went smoothly until one call got the dancers so tangled they were laughing as Shaun said, “We won’t try that one again.” The banana splits disappeared quickly and were much appreciated by all that attended.
October 12 was October Fest with Sandy Harris as caller and cuer. October 26 is our Halloween Dance with caller Roger Putzler and cuer Jackie Gale. We are dark November 9 for a visitation to Sweet Home’s Veterans’ Day dance. November 23 is our Friendsgiving Dance celebrating the beginning of the holidays season with caller Roger Putzler and cuer Jackie Gale. Our only December dance is a potluck on December 14. Craig Abercrombie is caller and cuer.
New Dancer lesson began on September 26. Having the first lesson free seemed to have worked. We had five squares, counting angels and new students. Everyone had a great time and most did sign up for lessons. I like dancing weekly, meeting interesting new people, helping others learn the calls, and exercising. Even though I have danced many years, I generally learn something new each time. Bruce Lowther and Lila complimented the students on their quick understanding of the calls.
Seven Corvallis Squares members enjoyed their September 20 visit at the Alliance plus dance in Albany’s IOOF Hall. Caller Bruce Lowther and cuer Judy Russell kept us on our toes with some challenging calls. It was a fun dance even if a few of us (me?) felt we were not up to the challenge. More info at www.CorvallisSquares.com.
Rachel Nettleton
Our second dance in September provided hot dogs, and the members brought finger foods to go along with them. There was a lot to choose from. The second dance in October has a Harvest theme.
There is still room for more people on our dance floor. Come and enjoy KC Curtis and Stephanie Lozano provide the music and calls/cues for the dancers.
Our New Dancer Dance is December 14 at 6:30 p.m. New dancers can come and get their Mid-Willamette New Dancer booklet signed in order to work their way to earning the Ambassador bar for their badge.
Marilyn Schmit
Looking forward, our New Dancers Dance will be Sunday, December 8, and the ALLIANCE will be hosting a New Year’s Eve Dance at the Lebanon Senior Center as well. If you would like more details about what Lebanon Square Circlers are up to, we encourage you to pop in to our website at www.lebanonsquarecirclers.com - hope to see you in a square!
Kaynor Heineck
We discussed the upcoming Mid-Winter weekend and the possibility of a round dance weekend or full day of dancing, and some teaches. Stay tuned for further details
Marilyn.
We are discussing possible New Year’s Eve activities but have hit a snag because our cuer has been booked elsewhere for the evening. There is a new dancer dance in our area at the same time, so we are not sure how many dancers would attend. Time will tell.
Marilyn
We are having a Halloween Dance on October 18. Wear a costume and come join the fun. November has three Fridays. Watch our Facebook page to see if we are dancing on the fifth Friday. Our New Dancer Dance is December 6 with a Recycled Clothing Sale. The Christmas Dance is December 20.
We are having a blast with our nineteen new students. They are learning by leaps and bounds. See you on the dance floor.

Darrell Kalmbach will call on November 6. Tami Helms will cue.

In addition to our regular dances, Darrell Kalmbach will be teaching “tune up” sessions each Wednesday evening at 6 pm. Experienced dancers from all clubs are welcome and encouraged to attend one or all sessions through November 20. The suggested donation is $5 per dancer, per session. Those attending tune ups will receive a discount when they stay on a dance night. Come for the tune up and pay only $5 additional for the dance.
See y’all soon.
Our Pirate Dance, held Friday, October 4, had two squares dancing and spirits were energetic. Costume winners were: Charlynn Newton, Terry Halley, and Lezlie Miller & Jay of Bachelors & Bachelorettes. Scott Zinser received an honorable mention. Julia Buchheit cued a fabulous set of rounds; thanks to all who made this dance fun.
Scott will call our dance on Friday, November 1, and Lane Clem will cue - no theme, just dance. Chaps will be dark on Friday, November 15 so that we can prepare to host our Turkey Trot Jamboree for new dancers on Sunday, November 24 from 4:30 - 7:00 pm. Angels, please invite your students to come, maybe even carpool, as we serve a full Turkey Dinner in addition to the dance. Scott will open with squares, Dave Cooper will be our cuer, and we anticipate a full hall, with food served in shifts beginning around 5:30 pm.
Happy Feet,
Betty Chipps

Looking ahead - we are celebrating our 57th birthday dance on Dec 7th with the wonderful Adam Christmand calling and Rikki cueing. Wishing you a great start to the Fall season and their holidays and hope to see you in a square soon.
Lots of snacks, (4) great meals with endless coffee, Iced Tea, Juice, Ice Water all weekend long. The dancing was high energy and our staff of callers, cuer, kitchen workers, registration greeter, Louise Voss everyone worked exceptionally well together all with the same goal to make our Country Fever Weekend the best ever! And we did! We had 14 squares of registered dancers paid this year at the Buckeroo Barn.
Our 2025 Country Fever will have Callers, Jim Steele & Adam Christman and
Cuer, Rikki Lobato. Our 2025 Flyer will be out ready to for print in a couple weeks, so be sure to watch for it and get pre-registered with the limited time of 2024 pricing of $45 per person only until Feb 1, 2025. Then the price goes up!

All of our Workshops are located at Pleasant Ridge Community Hall 7067 SW Canal Blvd, Redmond, Oregon.

Rockin’ Outlaws
on October 26, with Phil Ramey calling Advanced from 630 to 730 and Alternating
Mainstream and Plus from 730 to 930.
On November 9, the Stars will honor our servicemen and women with a
Mainstream/Plus dance. There is no cuer at this time, but they hope to have one
by dance time.
On November 23, the Stars will give thanks. There will be advanced from 630 –
730 and alternating Mainstream/Plus from 730 to 930.
The class is doing well. There are consistently 14 or 15 students and enough
angels to make 4 or 5 squares.
The Council decided to not have a 5th Saturday November dance and instead is recommending that all dancers attend the Portland Area Council 5th Friday PAC Jamboree Dance on November 29th. This is a New Dancers Jamboree to be held at the Milwaukie Community Club, 10666 SE 42nd Ave, Milwaukie, OR 97222. It is important to get your current and recently graduated students attending dances. Jamborees are an excellent way to introduce them to our activity and to support them. Organize a carpool and show them a good time.
The TVC encourages Plus dancers to attend the anniversary dance on November 7th at the Promenaders Plus 10th anniversary. Held at the Hillsboro IOOF Hall, Darrell Kalmbach and Tami Helms will be calling and cueing. See their report below for details.
Since the OFN is published about the 20th of the month, you still have time to plan on attending the Seaside Sashay on October 25th and 26th. Held at the Seaside Civic & Convention Center, callers Adam Christman & Craig Abercrombie with cuer Tami Helms will be featured.

As for our club, we are in a time of sorrow. We lost a club member, Betsy Hurt, this month and also have felt the pain of our Caller, Daryl Clendenin as he morns the loss of his daughter. We would ask that fellow dancers keep those families in your prayers.
Our mainstream and plus classes are going well. We will be starting a new dancer’s class in January. Daryl and Renee Ruud are doing a great job.
Our November dances will feature Daryl calling and cueing. Come join us on the first and fifteenth. We might even talk him into doing either Running Bear of just some hot hash. Either or both can keep you on your toes.
Hope all have a very happy Thanksgiving.
Nick Johnson
We started September with our Labor Day Dance, and later in the month several members attended the memorial for Paul Swenson, our founding member along with his wife, Dotti. Paul passed away in July at the age of 102. It took four large displays around the room to document 102 years of photos and mementos! Paul visited Eager Beavers until his last year of life, and he will be missed.
November will bring our annual Veterans Day dance on November 11th where all veterans are thanked for their service and admitted to the dance for free. Our other themed dance is the Thanksgiving Dance on Monday the 25th.
We dance Plus at the Aloha Grange every Monday afternoon from 1:00 to 3:00, and would love to have you join us! For current dancing information, please see our website at http://EagerBeavers.info. (see link above).
Alice Hendricks
On the 4th Sunday we’ll have a class level dance followed by a potluck dinner. Always a pleasure.
Craig Holt
We had 14 new students as a result of our September classes and of these 6 will likely continue Square Dancing given attendance.

On November 23rd is our Pajama party dance with Randy Dibble calling and Randy Lewis cuing

M&M’s WILL be dancing with Randy Dibble and Katie Marteny on November 16th. Fun fact - it is also known as Button Day, Tolerance Day and National Fast Food Day.
Who knew there were so many things to celebrate in November??
Lindie Noonan

For September many of us had fun at the club campout at Silver Lake RV Resort September 27-29. Lots of great food, conversation and plenty of outdoor activities were enjoyed by all.
We had a super fun "Tailgate Party" mainstream dance on September with lots of great team jerseys and finger foods.

In November lessons are continuing Sunday afternoons, 2:00-3:15 for Waltz with Sandra Pinion and 3:30-5:30 for Mainstream with Terry Halley. However, on the 3rd lessons will be held at the Twin Oaks Airpark (3 miles west of our grange) at 12405 SW River Road, Hillsboro - and even though it says "road closed" it is open to local traffic going to the airpark. Lessons on the 10th and 17th will be back at Kinton Grange. On the 24th there will be NO lesson (due to the Chaps Turkey Trot Jamboree.) We're having our first dance "The Golden Oldies" on November 8th, and our 2nd dance is "The Grateful Harvest Pie Fest" on the 22nd, both dances with Terry Halley calling and Sandra Pinion cuing. (Like pie? You'll like this dance!)
Happy Thanksgiving to everyone.
