Have you ever thought about trying your hand at calling?
I am conducting weekly “virtual caller training sessions,” via Zoom. That’s right, you don’t have to leave the comfort of your own home. If you’re interested in giving it a try, or have any questions, email me, call me, or meet me at one of my dances.

Dorothy was a long-time member of the Hillsboro Hoedowners. We will post an obituary when one is available.
Born - January 9, 1945 in Vancouver, Washington
Died - January 6, 2024 in Brush Prairie, Washington
Janet passed at home with family, three days shy of her 80th birthday, just a few days after coming home from the hospital on hospice care. Many family members and friends got the opportunity to come and say hi over those last few days. Janet knew and greeted many of the family and friends that visited, and showed great excitement to see some of the grandkids, great grandkids, and great nieces.
Janet is survived by husband of 58 years Roy Bellcoff, daughter Colleen (Jeff) Relyea, grandson Sam (Kari) Sawyer, granddaughter Alyssa (Sean) Rice, grandson Josh, great grandchildren Malikai, Carolyn, Ellie, and Finn; son Steve (Martha) Bellcoff, grandson Erick (Beth Ann) Bellcoff, grandson Justin (Hannah) Bellcoff, great grandchildren James, Tyler, Liam, and Camdyn; son Greg (Lisa) Bellcoff, grandchildren Ashton, Chloe and Jace; and many, many, many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, cousins, and friends that have been adopted as part of the family, then can be listed in any paper.
Janet was born and raised in Clark County, Washington. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, she loved to camp, travel, and dance and especially loved it when those adventures included her wide family and friends. She really enjoyed any time she got to spend with her grandkids and great grandkids.
Janet (Wife, Mom, Auntie, Aunt Janet, Grandma, Grandma Janet, Grandma Bellcoff, whatever you knew her by) was always there to support you in anything you did. From the support of Roy and Steve in the Fire Department to new life adventures; from school plays to sporting activities; from band recitals to 4-H Fashion Review; from meal prep practices to food demonstration; from the 1st day of school to graduation. If you were part of her circle she was there to support you!
Janet graduated from Battle Ground High School in 1963. She was involved in Future Homemakers of America, Pep Service Club, Future Nurses Volunteer Services, and National Honor Society.
Janet graduated from Emanuel School of nursing in 1966, teaching nursing at Emanuel until Colleen was born, and then working as a RN between Vancouver Memorial Hospital and St Josephs Hospital (later known as Southwest Washington Medical Center, and today as PeaceHealth Southwest). After nearly 20 years in the hospitals, she moved to the Pediatrics department at Vancouver Clinic (in 1988). She served in many different roles at the Vancouver Clinic, retiring in January 2009.
Janet was always active in and around the community, locally, throughout the state, and nationally.
As a youth, Janet was heavily involved in 4H, she first exhibited in 4-H in 1955. Her involvement in 4-H continued throughout her life; spending many years as a 4H leader of the As You Like It 4H Club (even before her own kids were old enough to join 4H) working with youth on everything from sewing to baking to dairy cattle, from leading 4H activities to chaperoning 4H events and trips. She was a constant supporter of Youth; it didn’t matter if it was locally or across the state. In 1969, Janet was recognized with her Silver Clover award for 5 years as a 4H leader, continuing to be leader for nearly 50 more years. In 2001, Janet was recognized as one of the ‘First 100’ inductees into the Washington State 4-H Hall of Fame.
Janet went on and served many years on the Clark County 4H Leaders Council serving in all offices, eventually representing 4-H on the Clark County Fair Board starting in 1996, later moving from representing 4-H to being an at large Fair Board member. Janet was named Clark County Fair Volunteer of the Year in 2010. Janet served on the Clark County Fair Board for many years in many roles and especially loved being part of the scholarship committee. She loved being part of the fair every day, wondering the grounds and conversing with anyone and everyone. For many years she lived in the trailer at the fair from a day or two before the fair opened until the day after it closed. Janet was recognized in 2010 by the Western Fair Association with a ‘Blue Ribbon Award’ for her dedication to the Clark County Fair. In 2016, Janet was recognized for 50 years of Volunteer Service at the Clark County Fair. Janet retired from the fair board following the 2023 fair.
Janet attended Elim Lutheran Church in Hockinson for many years, heavily engaged in youth (teen) ministry along with Roy. Eventually they moved to Bethel Lutheran Church in Brush Prairie, where they were active for many years.
Janet was always active anywhere her kids were, beyond helping out in classrooms she served as the ‘School Picture Lady’ for many years, and was very active for many years in the Glenwood/Laurin PTA’s. Her PTA involvement included serving in many board positions including as President of the local Glenwood/Laurin PTA and the Service Area 3 PTA vice president where she received numerous awards and recognitions.
In 1980, Janet (and Roy) took square dance lessons in the gym at Glenwood Elementary school, shortly thereafter they joined the Silver Star Square Dance Club. Eventually joining the Evergreen Square Dance Council, and then the Buzzin Bees Square Dance Club. Janet enjoyed square dancing and danced regularly until the last few years. In the square dance community Janet was very active in any and all the organizations she was involved in including the Washington State Square Dance Federations, where she and Roy were recipients of the McGregor Award (2007) and President’s Award (2012). Janet and Roy served as the co-Committee Chairman of the 1986 WA State Square Dance Festival Pageant (in Vancouver, WA), the Chairman of the 1997 Washington State Square Dance Festival (in Ridgefield, WA), and Assistant General Chairman of the 69th National Square Dance Convention (2012) (in Spokane, WA).
Janet was also an active Grange member, as a part of Hazel Dell Grange and currently as a member of the Washington Grange. Janet served in many board positions while at Hazel Dell Grange eventually being recognized as a 7th degree National Grange member at the National Grange Convention in Spokane (2018).
Janet (Wife, Mom, Auntie, Aunt Janet, Grandma, Grandma Janet, Grandma Bellcoff or however knew her) will be forever missed and loved but will live on in all our hearts and memories.
Celebration of Life and potluck will be on Saturday, January 18, 2025 at 1pm at the Washington Grange 7701 NE Ward Rd Vancouver, WA 98682. In lieu of flowers, the family ask that donations be made in Janet’s name to the Clark County Fair Scholarship fund. Checks made payable to Clark County Fair Association (with memo to Clark County Fair Scholarship fund – in memory of Janet Bellcoff). Checks can be mailed to 17402 NE Delfel Rd., Ridgefield, WA 98642.

We are sharing the bounty of plastic ware, napkins, plates, bowls and cups that Abi Hargreaves had donated. These were purchased by the Boots and Sandals club which had folded. Single Trees club was going to buy forks, but we had a lot of those to give them. We thank Abi for donating these to the hall. They will be used.
Our president, Pat Cox and his wife, Cheri, and our vice-president, Sandy Harris were in attendance at our New Year's Eve dance put on by the Buccaneers, aka Roger Putzler and Christina Corelli. Everyone had a chance to call and cue and have a great time bringing in 2025! We charged $2.50 per dancer.. This was the entrance fee back over 26 years ago when we first purchased the dance center in Springfield. We had over five squares. Ending at 10:00 made it safer to drive home too.
The next fifth Saturday is March 29. This will be the Emerald Empire Area's annual benefit dance. The area has asked the callers and cuers of Cascade Callers and Cuers Association to donate their services which we are happy to do.
Respectfully submitted,
Christina Corelli
We dance at the Emerald Square Dance Center at 2095 Yolanda in Springfield in Hall B which is behind the building with a smaller parking lot. Please enter using the center doors. The dress code is casual. Since our group is small—from 12 to 15 at most attend—we often have to cancel our proposed date to dance, so be sure to call Fred Beisse at 541-683-2522 to see if we are dancing if you are not on his email list. You can check cas-sd.yolasite.com to see our tentative schedule. We are dancing on the 12h of January but will be dark on the 26th for MWF.
In February, we hope to have dances on the 2nd and 16th. Please mark your calendars to hold those dates. In February, we will be dancing from 1 to 3 PM instead of 1:30 to 3:30 PM. Please make a note of this if you plan on coming.
Happy New Year to All!
Keep on dancing!
Gaynor Hintz
In January we will only have one dance on Jan. 10 which will be our new dancer dance. We hope to see many new dancers out to join in the fun of this great activity. One of our sister club’s, the Whirl-A-Ways, members, Nancy Gowins, is always out there recruiting and has brought in members for both clubs. Thank you, Nancy! Recruiting isn’t easy, but it is necessary if we are to survive as a community activity.
We have a lot of good callers and cuers lined up for 2025. In February we will hold our 61st birthday dance, our Sweetheart of a 61st Birthday, on Feb. 14 with Shaun McKaney calling and Christina Corelli cueing. Shawn is an up and coming caller currently calling for Lebanon Square Circlers and Sweet Home Squarenaders. He has great timing and a very clear, good singing voice. On the 28th we will have “Your Favorite Cartoon Character” dance with Mark Wheeler and Christina Corelli. Mark Wheeler is one of Jim Hattrick’s proteges and has a fun personality and great stage presence. He is sure to get into the theme of this dance. Please come dance with us and enjoy all of the fine calling and cueing this month.
Happy New Year to All!
Gaynor Hintz
Please come and join us from 4 to 6 on Sundays. It’s always casual dress. Our caller, Tim Matteson, will call to the floor. Lately, we've been dancing Plus, but we do get guests who dance mainstream so that's what we dance. We enjoy having guests attend.
We will be dark Sunday, Jan. 26 for Mid-Winter Festival.
Please call our president, David Lajoie at 541-520-7311 to make sure we are, indeed, dancing. We rarely go dark, but it's still best to make sure.

Our holidays dance was a lot of fun. Roger Putzler always calls "I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas" and has a cute hippo up on the stage. The hippo was made by Tim Hagey. Tim sells a variety of his wonderful creations at Mid-Winter. Christina and Roger had fun calling and cueing Christmas favorites.
One of our members, Clara Fay Anderson, lost her son, Mark, recently. We are all so very sorry and are keeping Clara Fay and her family in our thoughts and prayers.
Whirl-A-Ways will visit Spin Cycle Squares in the near future. They dance Sundays from 4:00 to 6:00 at our hall in Springfield.
We look forward to our Pajama Dance January 18. Wear something warm for this cold time of the year. Dancers have worn some pretty interesting nightwear!
Happy dancing!
Christina Corelli
We meet in February to finalize the Spring Fling dance plans for the flyer, set the time, and to get the members informed of those plans. See www.ccca-or.org for information, and to contact the members.

Our Holiday Dance with Craig Abercrombie calling and a delicious potluck of holiday goodies was great fun for all. Several of our students attended and did very well. They are looking forward to their graduation on February 27.
February 8, we have a visitation to Sweet Home for their Birthday Dance. For a small club, they always have a good party. Check it out. February 22 is our Birthday Dance, and an Alliance Dance, with caller Roger Putzler and cuer Jackie Gale. This is a Gala so come for good dancing, entertainment, and, naturally, food.
March 7-8 is the annual Gleneden Beach Coast trip with callers and cuer Friday and Saturday; Bruce Lowther, Charlotte Jeskey, Judy Russell. I do like this trip because it is also an opportunity to have longer conversations with others. It is relaxing whether I can be active or not as I please, and the potlucks are good. Guests are welcome. See CorvallisSquares.com for more details.

The mainstream class will graduate on January 19 with dancing, pizza, and the distribution of diplomas. A new mainstream class will start on February 16 at 6:00 p.m. We encourage new students and others who need some brush up to attend the class.
We only had one dance in January. We do not have any special theme for this month. On January 11, we went dark to support the new students as they attended the last new dancer dance in Corvallis, and a chance to earn their New Dancer Ambassador bar.
We had a board meeting to upgrade the Constitution and By-Laws so that they agree with the recently updated Practices and Procedures. The voting will take place at our annual meeting in March. We also looked at potential officers for the club. Names are needed so their name will be on the ballot.

We just graduated nine dancers from our Mainstream class, and six two-step graduates. We are starting Plus and Cha Cha lessons February 9, so we are busy, busy, busy!!
Kaynor Heineck
We will eventually be thinking about our next rhythm to brush up on and get the word out to attract more dancers.
The two-step class will graduate on January 19 with dancing and diplomas. We have about five students and several angels. We laughed and had an enjoyable time learning and reinstructing the angels on what they had forgotten or gotten lax on. This is always a fun time for them also.
We will start a phase 2 Waltz class on February 16 at 3:30 p.m., and hope to see some new dancers in our next class.
Marilyn
Mainstream Graduation was January 15. We started off with a potluck dinner and then put the dancers through their paces.
January 17 will be a regular dance. Our new dancers will have graduated by then and will be able to gain more experience. After Mid-Winter, we will have a 5th Friday Plus Dance on January 31.
Our Annual Wear Red Dance to bring awareness of Heart Disease in Women will be on February 7. New Mainstream Lessons will start on February 12.
Blessings to all. Happy New Year.

On March 8, we’ll have our annual Purple Party. We wear purple to honor International Women’s Day, and our caller will be Karla Westphal from Southern California. Karla always picks wonderful singing calls appropriate to the dance theme, so see how many purple songs you recognize!

Janet Geiger is now teaching our SSD classes on Monday evenings. We had 5 students the first nite and 3 last week. We will be keeping the class open one more week and we hope to have a good turnout for the remainder of class.
Our next dance is our Valentine's dance on 2/8 with Phil Ramey calling and Rikki Lobato cueing. February 16th we are having a Heavenly Hoedown on Sunday, February 16th with Phil and Janet calling SSD and Mainstream. February 22nd is our 67th birthday dance with Dean Black and Rikki Lobato. Should be lots of fun. Be sure to mark your calendar for the 52nd annual Diamond Lake Festival July 23-26th with David and Dawn Mee from Anaheim, Ca. They are a lot of fun.
Hope to see you on the dance floor soon!
A successful TVC New Year’s Eve dance with 8 squares was held at the IOOF Hall, Hillsboro. Eager Beavers took home the attendance banner for highest percentage of club attending. Due to health issues Daryl Clendenin and Jeanine Norden, originally scheduled to call and cue, were not able to attend. With only a day to prepare, Darrell Kalmbach agreed to call for us, something that the TVC greatly appreciates. Lane Clem had more time to prepare to fill in as cuer. Both of them did an exceptional job keeping us all entertained throughout the evening. We began with a ham dinner, and then danced for a couple hours. We adjourned to the dining room for a New Years celebration at 12AM EST toasting with sparkling cider. We danced some more then back for desserts. Oh my! Desserts, desserts, desserts! What a great night.
The next TVC event will be on March 29th at the Aloha Grange. The dance will feature the calling of Craig Abercrombie and Julie Stiers cueing. The format will be: 7:00 to 7:15 pm, Rounds, 7:15 to 7:30 pm, Plus, and 7:30 to 9:30 pm, Mainstream with every 3rd tip Plus.
The Council highly recommends that all TVC dancers attend the anniversary dances held by other member clubs. On February 22nd the Hoedowners will hold their 75th Anniversary dance at the Aloha Grange from 7:00 to 9:00, Michael Kious calling and Randy Lewis cueing. A lasagna dinner precedes the dance at 6:00. See Hoedowners report below for additional information.
Since the OFN is published about the 20th of the month, you still have time to plan on attending the TVC’s annual President’s Potluck and Meeting on Monday, January 27th. It will be held at the Hillsboro IOOF Hall. The potluck is at 6 p.m., the meeting following after 6:30. This annual meeting is held to honor current and past club Presidents of the TVC clubs. All TVC club Presidents & dancers are invited to join us. At this meeting TVC President Sally Duyck will announce the recipient of the Tualatin Valley Council “Recognition Award”. This award is for outstanding service and special contribution to the square dance community within the TVC geographical area. Please see the flyer below or in the 'Flyer' section of this OFN issue.

We are anticipating a great dance at the Midwinter Festival in Albany. A good number of our members have ribbons indicating they are going.
February looks to be a month of dancing with our caller, Daryl Clendenin. The dates are February 7th and 21st, the first and third Fridays.
There was a question at a recent club meeting about why we dance on Fridays instead of Saturdays. The answer is money. As grange members we get a reduced rate during the week but on the weekend the grange is rented out for multiple times the amount we pay. If, like in the old days, were assured of nine squares on the floor it would probably be different. We chose the first and third Fridays so as to not interfere with the R-Square-D’s dance nights. There is a strong mutual support between our clubs.
I look forward to the days getting longer and seeing more and more folks in a square.
Nick Johnson
Looking forward, we are very fortunate to have found two wonderful cuers. Tami Helms and Lane Clem will be sharing the cueing duties for us on alternate weeks.
Eager Beavers danced all five Mondays in December, including our Christmas Dance on the 23rd where we each had our photos taken in front of the beautiful Christmas tree. February 10th will be our Valentine’s Dance.
We are starting our Plus lessons on February 10th from 12:00 to 1:15. After the second lesson students will be welcome to stay and dance for one class level tip following lessons, as our caller and instructor Darrell Kalmbach adjusts the level to include calls taught so far. Please note that our regular Monday dances will be from 1:15 to 3:00 during our lesson series, rather than starting at 1:00.
By the way, if you are looking for an additional dance opportunity after the Mid-Winter Festival, Eager Beavers will be dancing on Monday, January 27th. You are welcome to join us for Plus with Phase II and III Rounds at the Aloha Grange every Monday afternoon from 1:15 to 3:00. For current dancing information, please see our website at https://EagerBeavers.info. (see link above).

Lessons which began at the beginning of September will almost be finished by the end of February. No new lessons are planned until next September - meanwhile we’ll review ALL of the Basic and Mainstream calls each week.
A few Hayshakers are enjoying choreographing square dances using the Taminations sequencer. This is much more fun than solving crossword puzzles.
Craig Holt
In December we continued our lessons for new dancers. Our New Dancer Jamboree was held on December 14th with our regularly scheduled dance.
On December 28th, we bid farewell to 2024 with our annual Sparkle Dance. Everyone loves an excuse to break out the sequins!

February 22nd is our 75th Anniversary Dance. 75 years only comes around once so please join us for a lasagna dinner at 6.

We would like to congratulate Tami Helms who retired at the end of the year from her bus driving position. Enjoy!!
December is always a fun month for our club. The Christmas dance and cookie contest was a lot of fun! There were 9 entries; Ronnie and Joann Swanson won the best decorated; Madeline Sims won both the most original and the best overall for her delicious caramel apple skillet cookie. Darrell and Tami called and cued to Christmas songs. A great time was had by all!
The TVC New Years Eve dance was well attended with about 8 squares!
