Editor's Note

Callerlab, the international association of square dance callers, voted at their annual convention this week to make some rather substantial changes to the way the lists of moves are organized. You should ask your caller about it, and see if they think it will change the way your lessons are run.

even squares greeted Terri Sherrer from Palm Springs to the Rosetown Ramblers April showers dance on April 12.

Over the weekend of March 29th, Lebanon Square Circlers had a dance campout with dancing each night and dancing at both the Green Peters and Foster dams. Saturday night we had live music by the Patio Pickers, and Shaun McKamey called a tip and Sandra Pinion hash cued a pair of rounds to the live music.

Happy Hoppers visiting the R Square D 72nd Anniversary Dance on April 11

R Square D members at the R Square D 72nd Anniversary Dance on April 11

Lebanon had our annual Hippie dance on April 5th with 3 to 4 squares on the floor all night. Most of our dancers donned their hippie costumes for the dance.

Two squares of Rosetown Ramblers ventured north to visit the Happy Hoppers in Vancouver on April 19. What a friendly and energetic club!

Cascade Callers & Cuers Assoc
The Emerald Empire Annual Benefit Dance was called and cued by members of the CCCA.  The dance was not very large, but the dancers, the area and CCCA donated quite a bit to Oregon Horse Rescue.  David, a representative from the organization, was on hand to answer questions and to share more about this worthy cause.  There were lots of awesome items on which to bid in the silent auction.  Please go to their website for tons of information and how to donate and support.

Oregon Horse Rescue

Our president, Pat Cox, and his wife, Cherie, were unable to attend because they had come back from their Australian cruise pretty ill.  A number of people had gotten ill on the plane going over and had spent a lot of their vacation in bed.  We are so sorry this had happened to them.

Our next fifth Saturday dance is May 31. Please put that date on your calendar and join us.

Thank you for your support.

Respectfully submitted,

Christina Corelli

We had three dances in March. As usual we danced to recorded tips. In April on the 13th we will be dancing to a national caller, Terri Sherrer, which will be a special treat. We hope to have some out of town visitors join us. We’ll see. This article was submitted prior to the dance.

We dance at the Emerald Square Dance Center at 20th and Yolanda in Hall B which is behind the building. We normally have only one square, but we are hoping to build back up to two squares eventually.

We would love to have you come join us on the second and fourth Sundays from 1:30 to 3:30. Be sure to call Fred Beisse if you are not on the list and have not heard if we will be dancing. Also, there are some months when we dance on the 1st and 3rd Sundays to avoid conflicts with holidays. You can check us out on the website: cas-sd.yolasite.com or in the OFN. Remember the dates you see are only tentative. Fred does an assessment several days before the date, and if we don’t have a square, then we cancel as we have dancers who travel quite far to dance with us.

See you soon, I hope.

We held two dances in March, on the 2nd and 4th Friday, the 14th and the 28th. Darrell Kalmbach and Sandy Harris called and cued on the night of the 14th. Darrell called an excellent dance to a very small group of dancers. Hard to tell why so few would show up as Darrell always calls so well, paying close attention to the floor and making it fun for everyone. On the 28th we again had a poor showing. This time it was for for K.C. Curtis and Christina Corelli. K.C. always calls a good dance with great music. This reporter was unable to be there due to illness. He will be calling our April 11 dance with Dave Cooper cueing. We hope to see more people out since the weather is getting better. We appreciate those who drive from Roseburg or from towns and cities to the north of us.

We dance at the Emerald Square Dance Center at 2095 Yolanda off I-105 in Hall A from 7:30 to 10PM. We do not take a formal break but at times will when we have something special like the Irish Potato Bar on March 14. In May we will have our Taco Bar on May 9 with Mark Wheeler calling and Sandy Harris cueing. We hope to have the taco bar before the dance at 6:30 or 7 so as not to disrupt the flow of the dance.

See you in a square,

Gaynor Hintz

Please come and join us from 4 to 6 on Sundays.  It’s always casual dress.  Tim Matteson, our caller, will call to the floor.  That means if we have Mainstream dancers that's what he will call.  If we have Plus dancers, he will call Plus.   There will be something for everyone who shows up.  We always have lots of munchies too.  So, please come and enjoy two hours of dancing and camaraderie.

Our friend, national caller, Terri Sherrer called for us April 13. What a special treat!  Our caller, Tim Matteson, got to dance!

Tim and Cheryl Hagey sometimes bring their four grandsons to Spin Cycle Squares.  Killian, the oldest, dances mainstream and does a great job.  He was 'dancing when he was very little and the only grandson.  He would ride on Grandpa Tim's shoulders.  The four boys are so well behaved and a delight.

Please call our president, David Lajoie at 541-520-7311 to make sure we are, indeed, dancing.  We rarely go dark, but it's still best to make sure. Planned dark dates are July 6, September 21 and October 12.

We held our annual Spring Fling dance on March 30 with 4.5 paid squares in attendance. We also had four young women on stage to share what they have learned to be callers or cuers. They did very well. They will compete at the Pacific Northwest Teen Square Dance Festival in May. We had lots of food and many door prizes to go around. The end of our fiscal year is June 1 and we have our last meeting on the third Sunday in May. We are dark for the summer.

We held elections at our February meeting and all the current officers were re-elected for another year. KC and Linda Curtis will be the new club delegates to the Mid-Willamette Area Council meetings.

This will go to print after our April dances. The first dance is a benefit dance with monies made going to the youth dancers of Salem Swingin’ Stars. The youth who are competing will be brought up on stage to show their talents and be appreciated for what they have learned.

The second dance is an Easter dance with pastel colors welcomed at the dance.

We have another board meeting in May to do final voting on constitution changes that needed to be put in the club newsletter twice before voting could happen.

We are sad to report the passing of a long time member, Ron Lockwood. He passed on March 13. He was a good cook and made some great soups for some of the past Koast Krashes. We extend our condolences to Carol and the family.

We will have our spring meeting in April and will make a few plans for something special to happen to raise some funds. The exact date has not been decided but is still under discussion.

Our Treasurer, Connie Clark, fell and broke one of her legs pretty bad, and had to have surgery and some recovery at OHSU and Avamere in Beaverton. She was hoping to go home on April 1. Get better soon, Connie. We are thinking about you.

ReVuN'Q
We will finish the rumba lessons on the second Thursday in April and be dark for two weeks while Randy and Debbie attend a Festival in Germany. After their return, we will just dance all the rhythms for the rest of the spring/summer season, provided there are enough attending to make it worthwhile to open the door and have Randy drive 60 minutes or more to cue.

We will dance on the third Thursday in June as we celebrate 49 years of existence. Hoping to have lots of visitors to help us celebrate. More details next month.

The PAC has elected officers for the term running from June 2025 to May 2026. Congratulations to:

President: Jeff Knapp

Vice President: Tami Helms

Secretary: Sue Stevens

Treasurer: Vicki Pounds

State Delegate: Betty Chipps

Thanks to all the officers for their dedication to square dancing and helping the PAC be the best it can be.

Extra special thanks to Eileen Pettycrew, who is stepping down as secretary after six years in this role. Eileen’s organizational skills are impeccable, and her minutes always are prompt and contain just the right amount of detail. She’s decided to give her keyboard a break from writing minutes, while she focuses on her family and hobbies. Did you know that Eileen is an accomplished and published poet? With her usual diligence, she is ensuring a smooth transition for our new secretary, Sue Stevens. We are thrilled to have Sue on our Board.

Our next PAC event will be the Tri-Council Dance on Saturday, May 31, at the Oak Grove Community Club, 14496 SE Cedar Ave., Oak Grove 97267. The caller will be Darrell Kalmbach; the cuer will be Tami Helms, and the theme will be Summer Dreaming. Let’s hope for some warm weather, so we can break out our summer togs and celebrate a new season.

The Chaps’ Open Mic Night held Friday, March 21 was exciting! Four squares danced that night, and the youth cuers had a big circle of couples on the floor, too. KC Curtis, Silverton’s Caller, came up on stage to help ‘lil’ Page get over the stage fright as a Caller—the audience was very proud of her. Our MCs, Thomas and Katie, were super. Thank you to everyone who participated - we look forward to being at the Pacific NW Teen Square Dance Festival competitions on May 11th at Blanchet Catholic School in Salem. Mark your calendars for next year…the Open Mic Night will be held March 20, 2026.

Hey man, our Hippie Dance on Friday, April 4th was indeed a ‘groovin’ time. Scott Z. and Mark McDonald entertained two lively squares. Our costume winners were: Male winner - Jay (Bachelor & Bachelorettes); Female winner was Elaine (Bachelor & Bachelorettes); and Gene & Patricia Neils were our winning Couple.

Chaps will take you back to the 60’s with the Hillbilly Dance on May 2. Go ahead, wear your jeans with a rope belt. You’ll find our Cuer, Tom Klug, wearing his torn/floppy hat with a straw in his mouth … it is his favorite theme. I wonder if Scott will call in suspenders and wearin’ a long-john tee. Of course, there are always Granny glasses and Eli Mae’s braids for the ladies.

May 16 will feature our Flags of Valor Dance where we honor all who have served our Country and kept us free. Dave (& Patty) Cooper, South Coast Cuer, will open with Rounds and Mark Wheeler is our Caller. Come help us honor our veterans and thank them for their service.

Scott Zinser will open our June 6 dance with Pre-Plus and Stephanie (&John) Lazano will call Rounds between tips. Please join us!

Happy Feet!

As usual, the activities at the Boring Barn will be anything but boring!

We’ll be dancing on April 26. Scott Zinser and Julie Stiers will call and cue.

Plus lessons are being taught on Thursday evenings by Scott Zinser. Angels can hone their skills, and those dancing the male position are especially needed. The lessons are at 7:30 pm at the Boring Barn.

We are looking forward to Spring Fling with Andy Allemao and Tami Helms on May 9-11. Contact Young or Patti for tickets. Andy is a wonderful national caller. See the flyer for the schedule.

Remember we have line dancing lessons starting at 5 pm on Wednesdays and Thursdays with Lynn. There is Bingo at the Barn on the 2nd and 4th Friday nights at 7 pm.

The Happy Hoppers Square Dance Club of Vancouver, Washington, felt "lucky" during the month of March. The club hosted Daryl Clendenin calling and Julie Stiers cueing on March 1, with Renee Ruud calling and cueing on March 15. Members and guests enjoyed "wearin' of the green" and had fun sharing shenanigans. March/April new lesson session began. It's great having newcomers to join in learning to square dance. HH have lessons Monday nights 6:30 Plus, 7:30 Basic/Mainstream. We welcome others to join us anytime. Mark your calendars to celebrate these new dancers at our Beginner Dance, Monday, April 28, 6:30 Plus, 7:30 Basic/Mainstream.

April will be lively with Craig Abercrombie calling and cueing our April 19 Mainstream with some Plus Dance from 7:00 to 9:30 PM. "Hop on over" to Washington Grange in Vancouver, WA and dance.

May is fast approaching! Our club will dance its first Saturday with Roger Putzler. It will be a Plus dance and our own member, Tom Halpenny, will lead Folk Dancing for all who want to participate. Our third Saturday, May 17, is a Mainstream dance with some Plus and rounds. Daryl Clendenin will be calling and Julie Stiers cueing. Come dance with us 7:00 to 9:30 PM.

May will also offer Monday evening workshops, May 5 and 12 (6:30 Plus, 7:30 Beyond Beginner/Mainstream) with Craig Abercrombie. He will be reviewing square dance calls and letting dancers strengthen their skills.

See you dancing, Denise and Roz Buddenberg

We had a great visitation to Bachelor ‘n’ Bachelorettes’ 60th Anniversary Dance on April 2 with seventeen members attending. We retrieved another club banner. They had a great attendance, yummy cake and other finger foods, besides a poker run.

By the time this is printed, our club will have had two great dances in April. Our fourth Saturday dance was our Crazy T-Shirt Dance…hope you did not miss it! In May, we will be dancing on the 2nd & 4th Saturdays (as always). We find our second Saturday dance seems to be not as well attended; too many club dances that night, but hope some of you will come visit us. Next month we will be reporting on the “new” officers for our club and in June our second Saturday dance will be our Anniversary Dance.

We are looking to do more visitations to retrieve our club banners. I’m sorry to admit that we do not know who has our banners. If your club has a River City Dancers’ banner, please send a message to Pat Young, patriciajyoung@yahoo.com. We want to add you to our visitation list!

On April 12, we had our April showers dance on a beautiful and dry spring evening. Not complaining! Terri Sherrer from Palm Springs called to seven squares. We welcomed visitors from Columbia River Dancers, Fairway Village Squares, Chaps and Petticoats, Country Cut-ups, and a couple from Denver, Colorado. It’s always a blast to dance with new friends and old. Come join us!

Before our April 12 dance, we had our annual membership meeting. We amended our bylaws to add a new Board position: Membership Coordinator. This person will help promote dances, lessons, and other club events to members; maintain our club directory; assist our students to transition student members to full club membership; and coordinate our annual membership drive and insurance reporting each October. Our plan is to enhance membership engagement and retention of new dancers.

After we amended the bylaws, we elected our Board. We are pleased to announce the following:

President: Jeff Knapp

Secretary: Eileen Pettycrew

Treasurer: Tara O’Neil

Membership Coordinator: Gerry Blakney

Member at Large: Mary Parsley

Member at Large: Jason Kelly

Our next dance will be our Mad Plaid Grad graduation dance on May 10. We are on track to graduate 23 students. Wear your crazy combinations of plaid to this dance. Admission is free, to celebrate our students’ achievements.

Our last dance before our summer hiatus will be our Pride dance on June 14. You do not want to miss this dance, which will feature international phenom Michael Kellogg at the mic. Even as I type, Michael can be found in Austria, where he just called a club anniversary dance for over 200 dancers. Wow!

We are thrilled to announce that our Scares and Squares dance weekend will be back for 2025. Dance dates are October 10-12, 2025, and we will be dancing at the Beaverton Elk's Lodge again. We’ve lined up some of the world’s best callers: Vic Ceder, Darren Gallina, and Stephen Cole. We’ll be dancing from 7-10 on Friday night; 9 am to 10 pm on Saturday; and 10 am to 12:30 pm on Sunday. Over the course of the weekend, we will be offering all programs from Social Square Dance all the way through Challenge. Early bird registration, through July 6, is just $75 for the entire weekend. To register, print out the form on our website, rosetownramblers.com, or you can just send your registration information to rtramblers@gmail.com.

The March 24th TVC meeting presided by TVC President Sally Duyck was held via Zoom with 20 attendees. There were three main topics of discussion. 1) The finalizing of the “Delegates Intro to TVC” document for placing on the TVC website, done. 2) Whether or not to have a combination of in-person and Zoom meetings or go to Zoom only, no final decision. 3) How to distribute printed materials to delegates. The last item is still under consideration depending upon the results of meeting type discussions.

The March 29th TVC Fifth Saturday dance was a huge success. With nearly 11 squares of dancers present, the Aloha Grange was rocking with Craig Abercrombie calling and Tami Helms cueing. Thank you to Tami for filling in for Connie Clark on short notice.

The TVC is looking for a new President or co-President to assist Sally. Election of Council officers is held at the May 28th meeting. Nominations must be submitted before then. Those elected take office in June. Please consider running for this position.

There are no TVC club anniversaries in May but we are joining the other two local Councils at the Tri Council Dance at the Oak Grove Community Club On the 31st. The dance is hosted by the Portland Area Council and will feature Darrell Kalmbach calling with the cueing of Tami Helms.

The dates, times, and talent have been determined for three of the 2025 TVC events. August 30th TVC dance at the Aloha Grange will feature caller Darrel Kalmbach and cuer Tami Helms at 7p.m., November 29th TVC New Dancer Jamboree at the Kinton Grange featuring caller Scott Zinser and cuer Lane Clem at 7:30p.m., and December 31st will be the New Year’s Eve Dance with Darrell Kalmbach and Tami Helms at the Hillsboro IOOF Hall. Good news! Our beginners’ class is doing great. They are progressing better than I thought they would. We are planning to have a Beginning Dancers class in May. The tentative date is May 18th, a Sunday. Please watch for a flyer and encourage your new dancers to come. Daryl Clendenin, our caller will call to the floor, but our dancers are getting really good, so…

We celebrated our 10th anniversary in March. We had nine squares on the floor. What a blast. It was so good to see some dancers that we haven’t seen for a while. Adam Christman has called for us at least nine of our anniversary dances, and I think all ten, and is on our schedule for number eleven.

As you may recall from previous notes, Renee Rudd, Daryl’s student caller and a cuer on her own, had a slight stroke that affected her equilibrium. I am glad to say she is getting better data by day. She was able to come to the club and even sang with Daryl for two tips. It’s so good to see her.

Our regular dances in May will be the 2nd and the 16th. Daryl will call and cue. Come dance with us even if you are a single. It is our mission to ensure that all who attend dance.

In March we once again had five Mondays of dancing, including our festive St. Patrick’s Day Dance on the 17th. Our Plus classes are going well, with only a few more calls to learn. We enjoy having the students stay after lessons for the first half-hour of our dance, when Darrell calls to their level and they can practice what they’ve learned.

May will start with a Cinco de Mayo Dance on the 5th featuring Darrell Kalmbach calling Plus with Tami Helms cueing, then with lots of great dancing in between, ending with our Memorial Day Dance on the 26th, featuring guest caller Daryl Clendenin and Lane Clem cueing Phase II and III Rounds.

You are welcome to join us for Plus with Phase II and III Rounds at the Aloha Grange every Monday afternoon from 1:00 to 3:00. For current dancing information, please see our website at https://EagerBeavers.info. (see link above).

Hoedowners - Link
Was it the Luck of the Irish Dance or just plain luck that made the Hoedowner’s dance on March 8th so darn much fun? The sound of a little Irish jig will jump start any dancer’s heart. When you were a kid, if someone showed up not wearing green on St. Patrick’s Day did it mean you got to give a pinch? That’s what we thought. I didn’t see any pinching going on, but frolicking was the order of the day. Thank you, Michael Kious and Randy Lewis for keeping us going. Baked potatoes for all.

The fun and craziness continued the 22nd for our March Madness Dance. Basketball fever seizes America and folks wear school gear, join betting pools and have an excuse for eating pub food. Then again, who doesn’t love pub food? The outcome is still weeks away, but insanity continues right up until the end which oddly enough is in April.

What does the future hold? A very busy May with our Mother’s Day Dance on May 10th and Memorial Day dance on the 24th. Hope you can come over to the Aloha Grange and join in.

March was a busy month for Oak Hills Squares as we celebrated new dancers Julie and Nathan joining the club after their series of lessons. We also held a St Patrick's Day themed dance with decorations, and many dancers were in green dancing costumes, and others were dressed in Irish Green.

May 5th, or "Cinco De Mayo," falls on our regular dancing night, and we look forward to a fun night of themed music and wearing colorful attire. Members will bring food to share as we celebrate the holiday.

Looking forward, our club will celebrate our anniversary in June; the date will be announced.

March has flown by with many dances throughout our area. R Square D dancers attended many area dances. Our dances were full of our own members and many dancers from nearby clubs. March dances included a TVC Council dance and Evergreen Council dance. We were well represented at both Council Dances. We had a great time at both. In March we had the Wearing of the Green dance with Guest Caller Jim Raupp, and a Crazy Tee Shirt Dance with Melissa James as the Guest Caller.

On May 9th we will have Our Fiesta de Mayo dance with a Taco Bar. And May 24th we are DARK due to the Memorial Day Holiday.

Our lessons continue on Wednesday evenings. Plus 6:30-7:30 and Basic /Mainstream 7:30-9, Craig Abercrombie instructor.

Plus square dance lessons continue with Darrell Kalmbach from 2:00-4:00 on Sunday's. We have quite a few students, so angels are needed and welcome to come and help.

Club officers effective in June were elected at the March meeting. Congratulations to our new President team of Ronnie and Joann Swanson, and those serving a second term; Donna Swanson, VP, Dianne Pratt, Secretary and Lalani Radford, Treasurer. We appreciate your willingness to serve! Ed Mickelson will serve as past president. Thank you, Ed, for your fantastic leadership as President! You have been a wonderful communicator!

In March, our Irish Themed dance was a great success with over five squares and lots of green! The potato bar was a huge hit as always!

In March we finished our last lessons in Mainstream and Plus, and we gained 14 new members. Also we had an Irish Dance, a Spring Fling Dance, a Jamboree, and a visitation to the Hoedowners' Irish Dance, too. A busy month! On the spur of the moment some of us visited "Open Mic Night" at the Chaps and Petticoats, to see the youth dancers tuning up for the regional Pacific Northwest Teen Square Dance Festival in May. They were fantastic! And so fun to dance with.

In May our caller Terry Halley and cuer Sandra Pinion will sing out for the "Fiesta Time!" dance on the 9th, and the "Hippie Hoedown" on the 23rd. Both will be held at our Kinton Grange - 7:00 Pre-Rounds, 7:15 Pre-Plus, 7:30-9:30 Mainstream, Rounds, and Plus at the 4th tip. Good chances to dress up in your special duds!

And something else... A "Mystery Trip" on the 17th - Will we be visiting you? It's a mystery!

Hope to see you in a square.

Gloria Davis
