Oregon hosted the 73rd annual Pacific Northwest Teen Square Dance Festival at the Blanchet Catholic School in Salem on May 9th and 10th, organized by Karyn Buchheit. Nearly 150 teen and pre-teen dancers, callers and cuers were competing, from Oregon, Washington and British Columbia.
Dancers who have never attended the festival would be astonished by the competition that goes on. Squares compete against each other to a 9-minute patter tip, young callers are judged on patter and singing calls, round dancers and young cuers are judged on both choreographed songs and hash calls.
This year, there was even a "last square standing" and "last couple standing" competition that was open to all comers.
The PNTSDF is quite a hoot. If it returns to Salem next year, do make an effort to attend to see what these young people are doing for our activity.
Summer Festival will be held July 11-13, at Blanchet Catholic School in Salem. Our exciting new program will have Dan Preedy as our Featured Caller with our very own Cathy & Bob Houston as our Featured Line Dance Teacher. For our round dance enthusiasts, we will have several excellent Oregon cuers cueing and teaching new and favorite rounds from Phases 2-4. This is an exciting new format and we hope you can join us.
The Charlie Browns from the Rogue Sis-Q Council will be hosting the Trails End Dance on July 10 in the Mainstream Hall (Sailboat Hall) from 7:00-9:30 pm. Dean Black will be our Caller MC with Rikki Lobato the Cuer MC. Callers and cuers will be welcome from the floor. To reserve your time to call or cue, please contact Lorri McIntosh (nursylady1976@yahoo.com). The Youth’s Concessions Stand will be open during the dance for dinner, drinks, and snacks.
On Friday, we will start in the Sailboat Hall with a Mainstream Open Mic for callers and cuers between 1:00-1:50 pm. Mainstream Dancing with Rounds continues from 2:00-4:00 pm. In the Round Dance Hall (Yacht Hall), we will have round dance teaching, round dancing, and line dancing and teaching until 4:00 pm. All halls will be closed for dinner from 4:00-7:00 pm when our Featured Caller Dan Preedy will kick off our evening in the Sailboat Hall with Julia Buchheit cueing. In our Plus Hall (Steamboat Hall) the evening will start with Randy Dibble calling and Sandy Harris Cueing. In the Yacht Hall, Sarge Glidewell will start the evening with a Phase 2 teach. The Youth’s Concessions will be open from 10:00 am-9:30 pm.
This year, our schedule also includes an opportunity for recent mainstream square dance graduates and others who might like to start their weekend off with easy mainstream. Saturday evening, you will be confident as you transition into the Mainstream Hall. Dancing in the Easy MS/Advance Hall (Rowboat Hall) will be from 7:00-10:00 pm Friday and Saturday from 10:00 am-1:00 pm.
Saturday brings a full day of dancing, line and round dance teaching, education, and a Last Square Standing challenge. Be sure to check out the Youth’s Concessions Stand. They will open for breakfast at 8:30 am and remain open until 9:30 pm. At 1:00 pm, Dan Preedy will be challenging everyone who would like to participate in a Last Square Dance Challenge --- tighten your dancing shoes and get ready to move it! Everyone participating will receive a fun badge! The lucky 8 who are left standing at the end will receive a special gift. We are charging $1 per person at the door to participate. At 1:00 pm, we will also be opening Advanced Dancing in the Rowboat Hall. At 2:00 pm, we will have an Education Seminar on how to be a Facebook Administrator for your clubs, how to create and use a QR code, and how to use sites like Next Door to promote your clubs. This is a continuation of our Mid-Winter seminar. Our Ceremonies will be Saturday from 6:30-7:00 pm. Opening Ceremonies will finish with one tip from Dan Preedy and Jonny Roberts. Mainstream with Rounds opens at 7:00 pm with Dan Preedy calling and Cathy Houston cueing. Plus will be with Dean Black and Julia Buchheit, Advanced will be with Rick Hawes, and Rikki Lobato will start the evening in the Yacht Hall.
On Sunday, dancing will start in the Mainstream Hall at 9:00 am with a Heavenly Hoedown. Round dancing will in the Yacht Hall will be 10:00-12:00 pm. The OFSRDC State Meeting will be held in the Rowboat Hall at 9:00 am; everyone is welcome to attend. Mainstream with rounds continues in the Sailboat Hall until 2:00 pm.
We will have a Basket Raffle again this year. We would like to ask clubs, councils, and dancers to donate a basket. The more baskets we have, the more fun we have.
Daytime dancing will be casual dress. Evening dancing is square dance attire is appreciated but not required. Please remember cowboy boots and spike heels are not allowed on the gym floors in the Sailboat/Mainstream and Steamboat/Plus Halls.
We are still looking for volunteers to help with setting up Thursday morning at 9:00 am and teardown on Saturday after 2:00 pm. If you are available to help, please contact Bill Coen or Lorri McIntosh.
Weekend ribbons will be available at the door for $45 per adult or $25 per youth. If you are unable to attend the entire weekend, you can purchase daily ribbons at the door. RV dry camping is available at the school for $10 per RV. If you would like to volunteer for Summer Festival, please contact Lorri McIntosh. Keep checking our Facebook page 2025 OFSRDC Summer Festival to keep up to date. Our current schedule has been posted to both the OFN and our Facebook page.

April 20, 1953 - March 23, 2025
Ginger Cadwell, beloved mother to 3 children, 71, of Albany, passed away at Samaritan Evergreen Hospice of leukemia on March 23rd, 2025, leaving a void her friends and family cannot fill. She was born in Birch Run, Michigan in 1953 to Earnest and Eileen Magnus, and could not wait to leave home. Ginger studied Computer Science at Coleman College before going to work at Price Club then IBM. Ginger was an amazing cook, dedicated quilter, and loved to dance. She had a zest for life that drew in the people around her. She also loved to see her grand kids and let her friend know how proud she was of her three daughters Stacey, Lauren, and Megan. Everyone she encountered will never forget the love she brought to their lives. A celebration of life will be held in early summer.
Ginger was a member of the Lebanon Square Circlers.

As usual in April we danced to recorded tips, but on April 13 we had a national caller, Terri Sherrer, come and call for us. What fun! Live callers are the best, but most dances we have to make do with recordings given the smallness of our dances and no available advanced caller nearby.. Since the recordings are from Bronc Wise or Darrell Lipscomb, we enjoy them very much. We’re getting to know Bronc Wise very well now and who is that guy that yells out all the time? Fun.
We will not have a live caller until next fall. Please come join us if you plan to be in the area. We would love to have you there and two more people would mean two squares!
Since we don’t always dance on the 2nd and 4th Sundays, please check our website at cas-sd.yolasite.com for our tentative schedule. We on occasion cannot muster a full square so that too determines whether we are dancing or not on any given Sunday. Please contact Fred Beisse at 458-221-3564 to be sure we are dancing.
See you in a square soon,
Gaynor Hintz
In May we will only have one dance on the 9th as the 4th Friday is Memorial Day weekend, and we expect many to be out of town or engaged with family gatherings.
In June we will return to our normal two dance format, 2nd and 4th Fridays. Our themes may change so I won’t announce them here. On June 13 we will have Shaun McKamey calling and Sandy Harris cueing. Shaun is a fairly new caller, but has a very clear voice, doesn’t stack the calls, and has a good singing voice. Our neighbors just to the north of us are lucky to have him. On June 27 the dynamic duo will return: K.C. Curtis and Dave Cooper so that should be a fun dance as well.
Please come join us on the 2nd and 4th Fridays. We’d love to see you.
Gaynor Hintz
Tim and Cheryl Hagey sometimes bring their four grandsons to Spin Cycle Squares. Killian, the oldest, dances mainstream and does a great job. He was 'dancing' when he was very little and the only grandson. He would ride on Grandpa Tim's shoulders. The four boys are so well behaved and a delight.
Please call our president, David Lajoie at 541-520-7311 to make sure we are, indeed, dancing. We rarely go dark, but it's still best to make sure. Planned dark dates are July 6, September 21 and October 12.
Christina Corelli
We had a nice surprise recently when our former caller, Mike Kious and his wife, Camille, and their darling son, Aiden came for a visit. Mike called a tip for us, and Aiden just charmed the socks off of us.
I talked with Donna Koehn, our original caller's wife. Ivan Koehn passed away a few years ago. Donna is now living in a senior living facility on Coburg Road and is doing very well. She has a nice apartment and an outdoor space and doesn't have to cook! She's at Crescent Park Senior Living if you wish to visit. Her phone number is the same as before: 541-688-1964. She'd love to hear from you.
We are getting ready for the Life's a Dance Festival coming up August 22-24. Hunter Keller is the featured caller and Rikki Lobato the featured cuer. Find this festival on FaceBook. For more information please call 541-359-4390 or 541-343-7323 or e-mail LifesADanceFestival@gmail.com

March 7-9: Our Coast Retreat to Gleneden Beach was well attended and we were pleased with the upgrades at the Community Center. Along with our dancing, we had a delicious potluck lunch and dinner, so it was a good thing we had a lot of dancing to do. We even had visitors from Colorado who decided to join our club, which made six new members.
We were dark on March 22 for a well attended visitation to Willamette Squares. On April 5, at least a square of us attended the Hippie Dance in Lebanon. This was fun not just for dancing but listening to stories of the Hippie movement in the 60’s and 70’s. For our charity dance, April 12, we had a free dance with all our donations going to the local Food Banks. Food banks have had an increase in people indeed and a decrease in funding, so thank you to our generous members.
Our snacks are always good, but April 26 was special. We were treated to a delicious chocolate coated Anniversary Cake to celebrate the wedding anniversary of our president, Jaga and Tom, married 50 years ago in Poland. We sang and cheered for them and then cheered some more for the two other couples who announced they had been married longer.
May 10 is our International day with members bringing in snacks inspired by other countries. We are dark on May 24 and on May 30 there is a board meeting with election of officers.
June 10, our last dance until September, is our most colorful and educational dance of the year. We test our skill in creating a paper butterfly and wear our most colorful outfits.
Rachel Nettleton, Reporter
Our Derby Hat dance showed some nice hats for those that remembered.
The annual Koast Krash weekend is now done and over. Dr. Seuss and Whoville were well represented with costumes, decorations, and fun. A good weather weekend for all. Some went home early with some sickness but are doing better now. A new set of organizers are set for next year and they will be looking for other sites for the weekend. It has been moved up a week to the third weekend of April due to the Yachats Inn being booked up already.
We have a board meeting in June to approve some adjustments to the Constitution to concur with the Practices and Procedures. It will be held before our second Saturday dance.
We will be dark on the second Saturday of July to support the Summer Festival.

A couple of moves, Suzie Q and Serpiente, were demonstrated for the guests, who are interested in becoming members. Another simple move, Strut, was also shown.
It was nice to see Neil Koozer, who had open heart surgery recently and is doing well. Another of our members, Connie Clark, fell and broke a leg in two places and she is home slowly recuperating. Jeanine Norden is under palliative care but is getting out to some events when she feels well enough.
A memorial service was held May 3 for former member, Patty Hermann, with over one hundred friends, family, church family and square dance family in attendance. Lots of good stories about Patty that made us smile and remember her.
Marilyn
We are back to dancing on Thursdays with the various rhythms being done. Randy will workshop any steps that he catches us doing that may need a little tweaking. We just need more dancers to show up.
Our 49th birthday is in June, and a flyer is in the works. We are hoping for lots of visitors to help us celebrate. The date for now is June 19.
Marilyn
On May 16 guest Caller Darrell Kalmbach will welcome the teams, and they will dance their Display Routines. Randy Lewis will be the Cuer. May 30 is a 5th Friday Plus dance with Randy Dibble calling and Randy Lewis cueing. June 6 is our First Friday Dance with Randy and Randy.
Our Mainstream lessons will have their Graduation Potluck on June 11. Randy Dibble is planning on a Plus Class and may continue the Advanced Group throughout the summer. Details will be on our Facebook page in June.
The warmer weather is nice. When it gets too hot, we have an air-conditioned hall, and we dance all summer long. Hope to see you in a square.
Sheila Machado
Sandy Harris
May 21 is our Memorial Day Dance. Come dressed in Red, White, and Blue. Dance to Terry Halley and Tami Helms. June 4 will be a Western Hoedown night, called by Darrell Kalmbach, and cued by Tami Helms. On June 18, we are happy to welcome Mark Wheeler as our guest caller, and Tami Helms will cue. Come try out our new schedule.
See you there.
Scott Zinser will open our June 6 dance with Pre-Plus and Stephanie Lazano will call Rounds. Please join us! On June 20, Terry Halley and Sandra Pinion will be rockin’ 50’s & 60’s music “At the Hop.” It’s time to go retro with Poodle skirts, bobby socks, saddle shoes, go-go boots, 50’s men roll-sleeved tee with jeans, or the 60’s tailored slacks and blazers.
Chaps and Petticoats will be dark in July and August 2025 . . . great time to claim a few visitation banners, don’t you think?!
Mark your calendars for Friday, September 5, when we return to dancing at the Maplewood Grange. with Scott Zinser as caller and Mark McDonald as cuer.
See you at Summer Festival, July 11-13, 2025, at Blanchet Catholic School, Salem.
Happy Feet,
Betty Chipps
June is an exciting month for the Happy Hoppers. The club will share Monday night Plus and Beyond Beginner workshops on June 2, 9, and 16. We will end our dancing season this month sharing a Plus dance on June 7 with Craig Abercrombie calling and cueing. Then on June 21, the Happy Hoppers will host Craig Abercrombie and Adam Christman to celebrate our 66th Anniversary Dance! We hope to see you at our Mainstream dance with some Plus tips and rounds, 7:00-9:30 at Washington Grange #82 in Vancouver WA. Ice cream social to follow.
Our club will be going dark in July and August. We encourage our members to keep dancing through the summer. Enjoy dancing when they can. Our website https://happy-hoppers.com is great for updates and information.
See you dancing...Denise and Roz Buddenberg
In April we had a visitation from the Country Cutups as well as a very fun Crazy Tee Shirt theme dance. Thank you to the Cutups for your support with the visitation. In May we hosted our normal 2nd and 4th Saturday dances.
We are planning for our Anniversary Dance on June 28 to celebrate another year of fun and dancing with our square dance friends. Please come and join our celebration!
We are looking forward to dancing through summer in our beautiful, air-conditioned hall except for July 12. We will be dark Saturday the 12th to attend Summer Festival in Salem. RCD will again be having a clothing resale at this year's Festival.
Hope to see you at these events.
Janice Brown
We held our Mad Plaid Grad graduation dance on May 10. Some of our superstar dancers sewed their own plaid attire for this dance—it seems others reached deep into the wardrobe and pulled on whatever they pulled out. Yikes—my eyes! So much fun! We graduated 20 students in the SSD program, and we will spend the next five weeks teaching Mainstream to those who wish to continue. We are really encouraging them to visit other clubs, so keep an eye out for Ramblers on parade!
Our last dance before our summer hiatus will be our Pride dance on June 14. Our caller will be international phenom Michael Kellogg. Michael has just completed a square dance tour of Germany, Austria, and Denmark. He is megastar and not to be missed!
We are dark in July and August, but far from idle. We’ll be performing at Pride Beaverton on June 29. Many of us will head down to San Francisco July 3-6 for the IAGSDC convention. We’ll be back in Portland for the Portland Pride Parade on July 20. And we’ll be a featured act at Oregon City Pride on September 6, followed by a community dance at Oak Grove.
No moss grows on these roses!
SYIAS!

Our next meeting is June 3rd at 4:30pm at the Rogue Valley Square Dance Center.
We are excited to have many of the state officers and delegates at our hall in Grants Pass the weekend of 5/31 and 6/1 for dance and Federation meeting.
June 7th is our Cancer Benefit dance with donations being taken to supper the American Cancer Society. We will also be having a bake sale and cake walk during the dance. Chuck Simpkins will be calling and Sarge Glidewell is cueing. June 21st is our Good Vibrations dance with Dean Black and Elaine Funk.
Looking ahead, we have our birthday dance on December 6th with Andy Allemao and Rikki Lobato.
Hope to see you down our way soon. Happy Dancing!
Advanced lessons are continuing on Wed evening at the Pleasant Ridge Community Hall in Redmond and dancers have started on the A2 calls.
Happy dancing!
The Council highly recommends that all TVC dancers attend the anniversary dances held by other member clubs. On June 15th the Oak Hills Squares will celebrate their 3rd Anniversary at the Oak Hills Recreation Center from 7:00 to 9:30, with Mark Wheeler calling and Lane Clem cueing. Although the Oak Hills Squares have been a TVC club for 6 years, this is only the third time they have had an anniversary dance due to Covid and other issues.
Since Memorial Day is being observed on the Monday scheduled for our meeting we have decided to delay the May meeting by one week. The next TVC meeting will be an "in person" meeting held at the Aloha Grange on June 2nd at 7PM. This will afford the opportunity to distribute the State Directories.
Ferrous Steinka
We think that it is good to have our dancers continue to learn and grow. It has been said that if newer dancers stop dancing they have a tendency to forget the moves and may not return in the fall. We will be reviewing mainstream and encouraging plus moves and a little bit more.
We use the temperature as our gauge to dance or not dance. If the temperature is 90 or above at 5 PM we will not dance.
If you or your club is dark during the summer, I would encourage you to come to Manor Grange on Sundays. Daryl will keep you sharp and you will be with good friends.
Our regular dances in June are on the 6th and the 20th. Daryl Clendenin will be calling and Julie Stiers will be cueing. See you in a square!
Nick Johnson
The Plus lessons are now complete and class members are dancing with the club. We finished with a final workshop on the 21st of April along with graduation of eleven students. The lessons were completed in just nine weeks on April 7th this year. An accelerated class allowed the new plus dancers to participate in our Anniversary dance. Darrell Kalmbach was our instructor and had a fast learning class.
Our club officers for the next year were elected in April and took office in May. They are: Sally & Mike Duyck as Co-Presidents, Karen & Ferrous Steinka as Co-Vice Presidents, Donna Swanson as Secretary, and Joann & Ronnie Swanson as Co-Treasurers. Tom Sminia remains as our lone TVC Representative. Thank you to our outgoing team of officers for their dedication over the past year.
We hope you will join us for our Monday afternoon Plus dances at the Aloha Grange, which is air-conditioned in case Mother Nature turns up the heat.
You are welcome to join us for Plus with Phase II and III Rounds at the Aloha Grange every Monday afternoon from 1:00 to 3:00. For current dancing information, please see our website at https://EagerBeavers.info. (see link above).

The Hayshakers square dance with Mark Wheeler calling every Sunday at 5 o’clock in the Pacific Grange on Hwy 101 halfway between Seaside and Astoria. It’s easy dancing which everyone can enjoy.
Craig Holt
The Hoedowners held their first "Spring Fever Dance" on Saturday April 12th with guest caller Terry Halley filling in for Mike Kious. Randy, “How many shopping days “til Christmas?”, Lewis cued. Then on April 26th Mike returned for our "Fiesta Dance" with recovering Connie Clark cueing for us. Connie had recently fallen which resulted in two fractures in one of her legs. Aside from negotiating the Grange stairs she did very well.
Hold on, wait for this, on June 14th we’ll be celebrating Parenthood, a salute to Dad with hot dogs after the dance. Hey, we all had parents and this is our evening to acknowledge Moms and Dads of all generations.
What’s ahead?? On June 28th we’ll have our "Hope To 'Sea' You Here" dance. There will be beach balls, mermaids, sandcastles, and shells scattered about but the bathing beauties hanging on the walls will have everyone talking. Their swimsuits will be from oh, so modest to holy cow! Those couples may be a little wooden when it comes to dancing but they certainly will put on a fashion show. We’ll keep you posted.
Both June dances will have Mike Kious calling and again with Randy cueing and reminding us of the remaining shopping days.
Hope To 'Sea' You.....

Our Secretary, Anne Scott, is in the process of streamlining our internal communication by creating a Google Group where any member can message the entire roster in one email. Thanks to Anne for improving our system of communication. Thanks also to Mike Duyck who has been doing the financial audit for the club for many years.
Currently, our Oak Hills Squares Board consists of Linda Kitchin, president, Barb Laney, Vice President, Anne Scott, Secretary, and Hillary Barrett, Treasurer. These loyal members have served the club since it's inception over 5 years ago, and most are ready to give others a chance to serve in these roles. Although Barb Laney has offered to continue as Vice President, the others are willing to help potential new officers in their roles. Many thanks to these officers; we are hopeful that others will step in to serve their club.
Monday June 16th will be a special day for Oak Hills Squares as we will celebrate our Anniversary! All are welcome to Oak Hills Rec Center, 153rd Ave. Beaverton. Mark Wheeler will call and we'll have special treats to share. Come celebrate with us!
Lynne Fonner

The club is making a visitation to the Tri Council dance on Saturday, May 31 at the Oak Grove Community Club in Milwaukie.
Janet Cason is going to be our new TVC delegate. We thank Janice Sminia and Judy Schnase for representing us last year. Judy is taking the VP role in the TVC. We thank Joann and Ronnie Swanson for representing us as the TVC VP's last term. It is nice to see our club so active with the TVC!
Our new club officers begin their term on June 1st and dues are due by that time as well. Many thanks to Ed Mickelson for his leadership as President for the last couple of terms! Ed has done a great job on communication and among other things began the weekly "Peek" which has really helped everyone to know what is going on from week to week.
April was a fun and busy month with our well attended sock hop on April 5th and our two visitations: to Valley Squares on April 4th and to Eager Beavers on April 14th. Everyone seems to really enjoy visiting other clubs!
It has been a great pleasure being the club reporter for two years. Janice and Tom Sminia will be the club reporters for this next year.

Terry Halley, our Tri Squares caller, was a guest caller at Braids and Braves on April 19th, and several of our members were able to attend. We all had a great time.
Our Annual Meeting took place at La Sierra Mexican Grille in Dundee on April 13th. A big thank you to Dale Brabham, our Tri Squares President for over five years. He is stepping down just a single rung to become Vice President. He will be the right-hand man to our new President - John Prouty.
Here is a list of all our elected officers: John Prouty - President, Dale Brabham - Vice President, Carol Roos - Secretary, Edith Prouty - Treasurer, Lynnea Loveberg - Dance Coordinator, and Charles McAuley & Barbara Huie - TVC Delegates.
It takes a lot of folks to run a successful club, and we had many of our members step up to volunteer for positions this year: Assistance Dance Coordinator & Lesson Refreshments - Helen McAuley, Assistant Treasurer - Dave Spaulding, Caller/ Cuer Liaison - Greg Moravan, Dance Flyer Creator - John Prouty, Grange liaison - Dale Brabham, Lessons Chair - Linda Brabham, Roster Editor - Edith Prouty, Social Chair - Juanita Hitt, Social Media/Facebook - Charles McAuley, Special events Coordinators - Carol Roos & Lynnea Loveberg, Tattler Editor - David Godsoe, Visitations - Carol Roos, and OFN Reporter - Renee Ramig.
We will continue some great themed dances in May and June including: May 23rd: Hippie Hoedown, June 13th: Stars & Stripes, and finally our last dance of the season June 27th: Berry Best Ice Cream Social. Our Ice Cream social will include delicious ice cream with lots of toppings for you to enjoy at the end of the night.
All the dances take place at the Kinton Grange in Beaverton - 7:00 Pre-Rounds, 7:15 Pre-Plus, 7:30-9:30 Mainstream, Rounds, and Plus at the 4th tip. Our Caller is Terry Halley and Cuer is Sandra Pinion. Both are amazing, and I hope you can come by and join us!
Squarely Yours,
Renee Ramig
Come join us and have fun dancing.
