Caller's Corner
“The Proposal”
CallerLab as presented (in a video) by Ted Lizotte, Chairman of the CallerLab Board, has come up with a plan they think will help resolve the declining square dancer population. The Proposal involves combining four (4) dance levels: B1, B2, MS through Plus - splitting them into two (2) divisions of 50 moves each:
- 50 Basic (B1+B2) moves (encompassing SSD), followed by
- 50 more moves = Mainstream (MS) + Plus & maybe a few A1 moves too.
One caller shared that their “good intentions” may help ‘newer Callers’ more than ‘new dancers, though I don’t see how.
From a Caller perspective, the first 50 Basic instructions would probably be OK. However, the second 50 moves, teaching MS with PLus, would be very confusing and time consuming for the dancers. As Callers, we have always been told NOT to rush MS Dancers into Plus (as these are two distinct levels); instead give dancers at least a year’s worth of floor-time to solidify their newly learned Basic & MS skills. I concur MS should NOT be taught back-to-back with Plus, and throwing in a few A1 moves would further add to the confusion.
After watching the 2024 video, many times, and speaking with several Callers throughout Oregon, the general consensus is “don’t teach MS moves with Plus moves” - what we have as lists right now works … “IF it ain’t broke - don’t fix it.”
CallerLab, at their April 2025 meeting, approved this “Proposal,” pending the vote of their members not in attendance. I’m not a CallerLab member, so I probably won't get to vote on these changes; should I be concerned about this plan? Aren’t “Caller commands merely suggestions?”
Terry Halley, OFSRDC Caller Liaison
Obituaries
- Mary Joyce (Martin) Theirl

February 17, 1940 – May 20th, 2025
Mary was born to John and Helen Martin in Portland, Oregon. She was the fourth of five children. She met her husband, Steve Theirl, in 1965, doing what she loved to do the most, square dancing. Mary was almost a charter member of the Bachelor & Bachelorettes, back then the only club that would allow solo dancers. Mary and Steve were married July 20th, 1968, and were blessed with three wonderful children – Theresa, Rose and David. Steve and Mary were married for 35 years before he died in November, 2003.
She went to St. Francis grade school and St. Mary’s Academy high school. Right out of high school, she worked for the Catholic Sentinel newspaper, followed by the State Game Commission, Bonneville Power Administration, Corps of Engineering, and retired from the Federal Wage and Hour Division in 2005.
She is survived by her children, Theresa, Rose and David; also, a granddaughter, Ruby, and Mary’s youngest sibling, Anne.
A Catholic funeral mass will be June 4th, 10:30AM at Christ the King Church, Milwaukie. Refreshments will follow. This was Mary’s parish.
Remembrances to Christ the King School, in lieu of flowers.
Mary’s cremains will be interred (next to her husband’s) at Gethsemani Catholic Cemetery, Happy Valley.

We had over three squares for our May 31 Fifth Saturday dance. One of the dancers brought over a square from out-of-town and other out-of-town dancers came as well. Our next Fifth Saturday dance is scheduled for August 30. Christina's birthday is August 31 so she will bring cake.
Our hall has a cushioned wood floor and air conditioning. So, come and be comfortable. Dance and eat cake!
Respectfully submitted,
Christina Corelli
We had two fun albeit small dances in May. We danced to recorded music, mostly Bronc Wise recordings. We always enjoy dancing to his calls. At times we are only two dancers short of two squares, but Fred Beisse makes sure we don’t sit around too long and that everyone gets their fair share of floor time.
If you are in the area, we would love for you to come dance with us.
We hope to have a class taught by Tim Matteson on Wednesday evenings from 7 to 8:30PM at the hall in Springfield. If you are in the area and want to learn advanced, please be sure to let us know so we can send reminder notices to you.
We dance mostly on the 2nd and 4th Sundays in Hall B at 2095 Yolanda in Springfield from 1:30 to 3:30. Door donation is $5.00 which goes towards hall rental and building up our coffers to pay live callers when we can get them. Please check the OFN or our website for our tentative schedule. Fred does a poll early in the week preceding the proposed date of our dances to see how many can come. If we don’t heave enough signed up then we cancel. Please call Fred at 458-221-3564 to let him know you’re coming if you are not on the email list for notifications. We are tentatively scheduled to dance July 13, July 27, and Aug. 10. We are looking forward to the opportunity to dance some Advanced with Hunter Keller at the Life’s A Dance Festival at our hall August 22, 23, and 24. Please visit our website at cas-sd.yolasite.com for more information.
Happy dancing this summer, everyone.

We held our annual Mexican Fiesta Dance with Taco Bar on May 9 this year. We were happy to see some dancers from our sister club, the WAWs, as well as dancers from the Alliance clubs. The taco bar was so good and well-attended---34 people including some members who no longer dance joined us. The floor was bright with color and smiling faces. Thank you all for coming in this show of support. We had not seen four squares on the floor for quite some time.
We wee dark for Memorial Day weekend. In June by the time you read this article we will have had our Reigning Cats and Dogs dance on June 13 which is a benefit for our local humane society, Greenhill. We hope that those who attended were generous with their monetary support or else brought pet food and supplies to help care for our furry friends awaiting adoption. At the end of June on the 27th we will have our 4th Friday dance with K.C. Curtis and Dave Cooper. In July we will be dark for Summer Festival weekend (second Friday), but will dance on the 4th Friday which is Diamond Lake weekend. Sandy Harris is calling and cueing that dance. In August we will have an ice cream sundae social on the 2nd Friday, Aug. 8 with Bruce Lowther and Judy Russell, and go dark for the Life’s A Dance Festival on the 4th weekend.
We are casual during the hot summer months We dance 7:30 to 10 stating with 15 minutes of plus and 15 minutes of pre-rounds followed by mainstream with rounds..
Please come dance with us at the Emerald Square Dance Center in Springfield.

Please come and join us from 4 to 6 on Sundays. It’s casual dress always. Tim Matteson, our caller, will call to the floor. That means if we have Mainstream dancers, that's what he will call. If we have Plus dancers, he will call some Plus--something for everyone who shows up. We always have lots of munchies too. So, please come and enjoy two hours of dancing and camaraderie.
Melba Walker is a dancer who comes and supports Spin Cycle Squares big time. We were looking forward to having Melba come and dance with us following her recovery from successful shoulder surgery. Then, Melba fell and damaged her C2 disc and is in the hospital. She had surgery and is recovering. It's going to take time, but Melba is determined and has a positive attitude which makes all the difference in the world. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Melba for a full recovery.
Please call our president, David Lajoie at 541-520-7311 to make sure we are, indeed, dancing. We rarely go dark, but it's still best to make sure. Planned dark dates are June 22, July 6, September 21 and October 12.

We have gone dark for the summer except for our 49th birthday on June 19. By the time this is published, it will have happened.
We will start up again on September 11 at 7:30 p.m. for Slo Two Step rhythm. We are talking to Phase 2 dancers to encourage them to move up from Phase 2 to Phase 3. Slo Two Step is a slow rhythm that can be learned by most Phase 2 dancers.

Silver City is dancing over the summer though we are dark for some of our dances. We will be dark for our Friday dance in July as we will be attending the Summer Festival and running the concession stand. Please stop by and say "Hi" to our youth.

The Tri-Council Dance, hosted by the PAC on May 31, 2025, was a tremendous triumph. More than 100 paid dancers signed in, and we filled the entire Oak Grove Community Hall with 12 squares of dancers. We had dancers from 18 clubs, ranging from Kelso to Lebanon. Darrell Kalmbach and Tami Helms did a wonderful job entertaining the crowd, and the joint was really jumping. Thanks to all who supported this event.
We won’t be resting on our laurels because the next PAC dance will pop up on Friday, August 29. This will be a free community dance. All are welcome for a free taste of square dancing from 7-8:15, followed by our usual alternating Mainstream and Rounds from 8:15-9:30. Invite all your friends, and use this opportunity to promote your club’s fall lessons.

Thanks to all our wonderful friends who attended our dance at Maplewood Grange on June 6. It had an out-of-the-ordinary start when no one was present to open the hall, but but thanks to Sue who opened the doors, ended the chaos, and eased everybody's anxiety. We had two active squares that helped Scott Z. and Stephanie Lazano dance the night away; very much appreciated, everyone.
Please join Chaps and Petticoats (at Maplewood Grange) for our last dance of the season on June 20. Terry Halley and Sandra Pinion will be rockin’ 50’s & 60’s music “At the Hop.” It is a great time to go retro with poodle skirts, bobby socks, saddle shoes, go-go boots, 50’s men roll-sleeved tee with jeans or the 60’s tailored slacks and blazers. See you “At the Hop!”
Chaps and Petticoats will be dark in July and August 2025 … a great time to claim a few visitation banners, don’t you think?!
Mark your calendars for Friday, September 5, when we return to dancing at the Maplewood Grange with Scott Zinser and Mark McDonald as Caller and Cuer.
See you at Summer Festival, July 11-13, 2025, at Blanchet Catholic School, Salem.

The Happy Hoppers of Vancouver, WA, had "blooming" fun dancing in the month of May. Both first and third Saturday dances featured guest callers, Roger Putzler and Daryl Clendenin. Our club enjoyed the talents of Julie Stiers and Tom Halpenny for round dancing and folk dancing. A BIG thank you to all for attending.
June is here, and the Hoppers had a Plus with Rounds dance on June 7 with Craig Abercrombie calling and cueing. On Saturday, June 21, Happy Hoppers will celebrate our 66th Anniversary Dance! Craig Abercrombie and Adam Christman will be calling and cueing Mainstream with some Plus tips and Round Dance, 7:00 to 9:30 at Washington Grange #82 in Vancouver, WA. Ice cream social to follow. The Ramblers hosted another barn burner at the Oak Grove Community Club on June 14. Six squares of Ramblers and friends welcomed caller Michael Kellogg from Northridge, CA. We were thrilled to host guests from as far away as Eugene and Grants Pass; we sure do love visitors! Before the dance, we enjoyed homemade carrot cake and lemon blueberry cake to celebrate the two Ramblers couples who are getting married this summer. Congratulations to Cheyenne and Renee and Kristan and Eve!
We look forward to visiting River City Dancers on June 28 for that club’s anniversary dance.
We are dark in July and August, but our dance cards are full! We’ll be performing at Pride Beaverton on June 29. Many of us will head down to San Francisco July 3-6 for the IAGSDC convention. Then, we’ll head down to the Oregon Federation’s summer festival July 11-13, followed by the Portland Pride Parade on July 20. Groups of Ramblers plan to head over to Sisters for the Central Oregon Round-up August 7-9, and then it’s back on the road for the Life’s A Dance Festival in Springfield August 22-24. In between, we’re planning a club outing to Tigard’s Broadway Rose Theatre for Anything Goes on August 16.
We’ll gear up for our fall lesson series by performing at Oregon City Pride on September 6, followed by a free introduction to square dance at Oak Grove at 7 pm. Our lessons will start Wednesday, September 10, possibly at a new venue. Stay tuned!

Workshops are continuing thru July on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We will be closing down dancing on the 23rd of July as we have to tear down the hall for the fair to move in. We will put the hall back together at the end of August and restart dancing at that time.
Our next dance is Saturday, June 21st as we have a Good Vibrations dance with Dean Black and Elaine Funk. We will be dark during the 4th of July weekend and have our last dance of the summer on July 19th. New classes will start on September 4th. We look forward to dancing where we can during the summer. We hope you will attend the Summer Festival (hosted by our Council) as well as the Trails End Dance for Summer Festival; which is hosted by the Charlie's and MCs will be Dean Black and Rikki Lobato.

The May TVC meeting was delayed by one week due to Memorial Day being observed on our scheduled day. Twenty one members were present on June 2nd at the Aloha Grange with President Sally Duyck presiding.
The first order of business, the installation of officers, was actually conducted by Past President Dale Brabham. All elected and appointed officers along with attending club delegates were asked to stand. They were then asked to affirm their commitment to the position they held, each agreeing to the request. Dale then declared the installation to be complete.
The TVC wishes to welcome new Board members Vice President - Judy Schnase, and Treasurer - Bonni Lesser. Special thanks to Sally Duyck, Andis Garuts, Laura Irvan, and Dale Brabham who are continuing to serve on the Board and for the service of outgoing Board members Ronnie & Joann Swanson and Marie Clem as Vice President and Treasurer respectively.
Invited guest, Oregon Federation Youth Advisor, Kathy Roberts set up a projector and screen and with visual aids presented ways to advertise club events. She also showed how dance flyers are created and how to post them to the OFN or to Facebook. Flash drives containing information files were handed out after her presentation.
A transition session preceded the TVC meeting where the outgoing officers passed on office documents and operational information to the incoming officers.
It was reported that the 2025-2026 TVC Directory Ferrous has been compiling is nearing completion with the goal of a June printing order.
There are no scheduled TVC events in July. The next TVC meeting will be in person at the Aloha Grange on August 25th at 7pm.
The next Council dance will be August 30th at the Aloha Grange, details to follow.

What a great way to end our classes this year. The club had a new dancers dance on the 18th of May. We had 4 squares with 3 of them new dancers and a square of angels. Daryl did his usual great job of calling and the club had a cake to celebrate the end of the class for now.
While the club will not hold its scheduled dances on the first and third Fridays during July and August we are going to be having a great time on Sundays. We want to keep all new dancers dancing this summer so we are having Mainstream lessons and workshops on Sundays from 6 to 7:30 PM. Prior to those workshops we have workshops on Plus and a Little Bit More. Those are from 5 to 6 PM.
So, whether you are a new or experienced dancer we are offering something for you. The only thing to watch for is the temperature. If it will be 90 degrees or more at 5 PM, you will know that the workshops are canceled.
With all of that said, we look forward to seeing everyone in September. Jan and I do plan to continue to visit and dance with other clubs this summer, so look for us in a square.

May was a great month for Eager Beavers. We had at least four squares every Monday. Our Cinco de Mayo and Mother’s Day dances were special. We came out all dressed up in red, white, and blue for Memorial Day. Daryl Clendenin was our guest caller, always wonderful to see him. He was one of our great callers along with Darrell Kalmbach & Jim Hattrick, back in the years when we had all three calling for our club. We send a special thank you to all of our guests who come to dance with us and support our club.
In July we will celebrate another holiday with our Fourth of July Dance on Monday July 7th. We are again celebrating summer with our fondness of Hawaiian clothing. We suggest Hawaiian wear on the 2nd Monday dance all summer thru the 2nd Monday in September. Not a fan of Hawaiian or tropical shirts, no worries we are always happy to see you.
We dance in air-conditioned comfort at the Aloha Grange every Monday afternoon from 1:00 to 3:00. Come join in the fun we have at every dance.
You are welcome to join us for Plus with Phase II and III Rounds at the Aloha Grange every Monday afternoon from 1:00 to 3:00. For current dancing information, please see our website at https://EagerBeavers.info. (see link above).

The Hoedowners welcomed May, growth and spring, with our Mother's Day dance and honoring all our ladies who are Mothers for either their children or for others in need. We then celebrated Memorial Day and our precious freedom which we are very blessed and privileged to have. Michael Kious called and Randy Lewis cued for these May dances. Later in the month our dear friends Mike and Sally opened their gracious home to the club and we had a grand time playing games, eating, drinking and overall having a merry time!!! Many of us visited the Tri-Council dance at the end of May and had an incredible time dancing to Darrell Kalmbach as he called and Tami Helms as she cued. What a spectacular turn out the Tri-Council was and for the Hoedowners May was a very good month!
July is shaping up to be just as fun! Do you like Ice cream? I know I like ice cream! I scream, you scream, we all scream for Ice cream! We are holding the "Here's the Scoop" dance on July 12th and, you guessed it, we are serving Ice cream!!! We will have the incredible Michael Kious and the fabulous Randy Lewis Cueing. Then serving Ice cream and all the fixings after the dance! Yum!!! Then, not to be outdone, put on your clown outfit or Ring Master attire as we will then be hosting our Under the Big Top dance July 26th! The circus is coming to town in the form of a Hoedowner Dance! There may, or may not be, Lions, Tigers, and Bears! Oh My! But I know there will certainly be dancers, our wonderful Caller Michael Kious and our very talented cuer Randy Lewis. Then join us after the dance for hotdogs with all the fixings, popcorn, and other fun nostalgic circus treats.
We hope to see you there!!!

Oak Hills Squares continues to be very active, often with 3 squares for our 6:30 PM Monday night dances. We enthusiastically celebrated Cinco de Mayo with wonderful decorations, refreshments, and members dressed in colorful skirts and costumes.
On May 12th, we held a club meeting and many issues were discussed. Our club voted to continue dancing during the summer months as we have the luxury of air conditioning in the Oak Hills Recreation Center. New club officers were elected with Hilary Barrett as President, Dee Rice will serve as Secretary, and Marie Clem as Treasurer. Barb Laney will continue as Vice President.
We thank Linda Kitchin, club president for the past 6 years, and Anne Scott, Secretary for 6 years for their service as they step down from their roles.
Our Monday evening dances will include mainstream dancing from 6:30 to 7:30, then instruction on plus moves from 7:30 to 8:30.

May 2025 commenced our group lessons with 4 graduates. Several new dancers are continuing with workshops. We had one club dance, Fiesta de Mayo, with a Taco Bar. Our second dance of the month was dark due to the Memorial Day weekend.
May 31st was the Tri Council dance in Milwaukee, Oregon. Tri Council, as you know, is made up of Portland Area Council, Tualatin Valley Council, and Evergreen Council. As members of both the TVC and the Evergreen Council, several members of R Square D danced the evening away along with a total 106 dancers. It was beautiful weather to have a summer dreaming dance. Columbia River Dancers and Happy Hoppers, also part of the Evergreen Council, attended.
July is coming up around the corner. I don't want to anticipate the summer getting away from us, it will go by fast. July 9th will be our first dance with Craig Abercrombie and Julie Stiers as cuer. Dancers will be treated to Root Beer Floats. We are so lucky to have an air conditioned hall to dance in this summer. Our second dance in July will be on the 23rd. Caller is Terry Halley and cuer Rochelle Catt. Dancers will have ice cream floats as a summer treat. Washington State Festival in Yakima will be July 10-12 with several of our members attending.
Hoping everyone has a wonderful June and get many steps in dancing in the summertime air.

We are the new OFN reporters for the Sunset Promenaders, Tom, and Janice Sminia. We are grateful for Terri Browning's dedicated service as our reporter, authoring insightful monthly articles while traveling around the United States. We extend our sincere thanks to Terri for her excellent work and contributions. Excellent job gal and we really appreciate your work, thanks.
Sunset Promenaders dance schedule for July includes: Three Plus dances, July 3rd, July 17th, and July 31st. Mainstream schedule is Saturday July 5th. The Club is dark on July 19th because of a City function of “Chalk Art” on the streets. That activity causes street closures and parking issues downtown.
Seaside Sashay activity has started for the October Festival, with Dianne Pratt and Gary Clark coordinating, receiving requests for tickets, arranging for the callers, cuers and working with the Convention Center on details. Registration forms are now available. see October 24 in the Special Dances section of the OFN. Forms should be available at dances soon. The featured callers are Ray Brendzy and Darrell Kalmbach and the featured cuer is Tami Helms. Now is a good time to get your motel/hotel reservations.
The Hillsboro IOOF dance hall is air-conditioned, so we dance all year around. Our club starts Round dances at 7:00 PM, followed by square dancing from 7:30 to 9:30 PM. We dance Plus on the 1st, 3rd, and 5th Thursdays, and Mainstream on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays, both with Rounds.

May was a busy month for the Tri Squares! We had two dances. On May 9th, we had our Fiesta themed night with some nice Mexican snack foods afterwards. It is so much fun to continue socializing after dancing with some great food. (All Tri Squares dances have a theme and food!)
On the 23rd we had a night where Hippies came together to dance at the Hippie Hoedown. We had visitors from five clubs plus some independents. We had four squares for mainstream and three for plus.
Carol Roos coordinated a mystery trip for the Tri Squares on May 17th. Seventeen members of our club went together for a pizza dinner and a great dance at the Happy Hoppers in Vancouver Washington. The club members were so welcoming. A special shout out to Greg Moravan who drove the rented van and put up with 13 backseat drivers.
We hope you will be able to join us for our last dance of the season on Friday June 27th. The theme is “Berry Best Ice Cream Social.” Besides mainstream, plus, and rounds, we will have ice cream and lots of fun toppings.
Just a reminder, that the Tri Squares are dark during the months of July and August. We will be back in September with dancing as well as lessons.
I hope to see you soon,

The address of the Tillamook Senior Center is 316 Stillwell Avenue, Tillamook. Located on the corner of 4th and Stillwell there is no on site parking and little street parking. The huge Safeway parking lot is directly across the street. Our dances are held weekly on Tuesdays from 4:00 to 6:00 and we always have food and snacks.
