Editor's Note

I tend to be a summer kind of guy, but it's nice to have the temperatures get a little cooler for a change.

Kathy and I had a great time at the 25th annual Battle Rock Festival at the Beachcomber's Barn in Port Orford over Labor Day weekend. The Beachcombers know how to put on a good party, with as many as 11 squares on the floor, and about 6 squares in the ocean.

Cascade Callers & Cuers Assoc
A number of our members helped out at the Life's a Dance festival held at our dance center Aug. 22-24 and had a great time.  It was fun to square dance and round dance and enjoy someone else's calling and someone else's cueing.  We loved the featured caller, Hunter Keller and the featured cuer, Rikki Lobato.

Michael Kious is in charge of next year's festival slated for August.  He's already working on a featured caller and cuer  CCCA was asked if we'd be willing to sponsor Mike and this festival.  We said Yes!  So, look for news of next year's festival.  This year's festival was a success, and next year's will be as well!

We had a small but fun Fifth Saturday Dance, August 30.  Christina Corelli's birthday was the following day so she brought a yummy chocolate cake and a huge tub of ice cream!  Yum and Happy Birthday, Christina!

Our next dance is scheduled for November 29.

Happy calling and cueing,

Christina Corelli

We are looking forward to Tim Matteson’s advanced class starting in September on Wednesday nights from 7:15 to about 9 at the ESDC.. By the time you read this it will be underway with over a square of dancers starting to learn all the many calls on the A1 and A2 list. We are also looking forward to the graduates joining us on Sundays when we hold our dances to recorded music from 1:30 to 3:30. We sometimes dance on the 1st and 3rd Sunday and sometimes on the 2nd and 4th Sundays depending on how holidays fall. You can check our tentative schedule at cas-sd.yolasite.com. Our fearless leader Fred Beisse always does a count to make sure we have enough for at least a square so be sure to give him a call before you come to make sure we are dancing (458-221-3564.

In August many of us attended the Life’s A Dance Festival for the advanced level sessions each day and stayed to dance plus or mainstream and help out in the kitchen or elsewhere as needed. It was a fun time dancing to Hunter Keller and Rikki Lobato. We hope to see the festival return next year. Many thanks to Christine Beneda who organized this festival with her co-chair Nancy Gowins and others on her committee. Thanks to all the dancers who came from out of the area to make this a success!

Don’t forget to mark our calendar and come dance to Dan Preedy when he calls for us Nov. 9. That will be a special dance for sure.

We always dress casual and have tea, coffee, and snacks available. We would love to have you join us.

The Life's a Dance festival was a success and a number of our members were on hand to help.  We all enjoyed dancing to Hunter Keller.  We all thank Christine Beneda for all of her hard work putting together this fun festival!

Spin Cycle Square dances from 4 to 6 on Sundays.  It's casual dress.  Tim always calls to the floor.  That means if you dance Mainstream or Plus he'll make sure you are on the floor a majority of the time.  We always have a lot of munchies too.  So, please join us for a fun evening of dancing, camaraderie and munchies!

Melba Walker was  brought to the festival with her walker.  Melba was able to stand and give hugs too!  She's come a long way from falling and breaking her neck!  She has wowed her doctors! Thanks to her sister, Joy Pitts, for bringing Melba to visit.  Joy comes to dance with Spin Cycle Squares often.

This past Sunday we enjoyed the camaraderie of members and guests and all of the munchies provided.  This was also Christina's birthday.  There was cupcakes and ice cream available.  Our president, David Lajoie made an apple pie from apples he had picked earlier that day!  His first time to make it, and it was delicious!

So, plan to come and visit us Sundays from 4 to 6.  You may wish to call our president to make sure the dance is on.  We rarely go dark, but you just never know.  This past Sunday our caller, Tim Matteson, came to call but went home not feeling well.  We learned later he tested positive for COVID.  We all stayed and enjoyed the time together, but we hope to be dancing to Tim's calling next week.  David's number is 541-521-7311.

Happy dancing!

Christina Corelli

The Life's a Dance festival is over, and we are happy to report it was a huge success!  Hunter Keller called an awesome dances from new dancer through advanced levels.  Rikki Labato cued fun dances and taught us basic figures from a new rhythm called 'hustle'.

We want to applaud the efforts of Christine Beneda who did the majority of work for this festival!  Thank you Christine!  There were volunteers from Whirl-A-Ways, Spin Cycle Squares, Cast-A-Shadow, Single Trees, and Cascade Callers and Cuers Association who were willing to help before, during and after the festival.  Thank you one and all!

Whirl-A-Ways first dance of the season is September 20 with Roiger Putzler calling and Christina Corelli cueing with plus at 7:00 and mainstream from 7:30 to 10 with rounds. rounds.

We dance at the Emerald Dance Center, 2095 Yolanda in Springfield.  The hall has cushioned wood floor with air conditioning for the summer and heat in the winter!

Roger Putzler will be teaching  beginning square dancing starting September 9 at 7:00.  He'll teach Plus or do Plus workshops at 9:00 provided there are enough dancers.

Christina Corelli will be teaching Beginning Waltz on Mondays starting September 8 from 7 to 8.  Intermediate rounds is from 8 to 9.

Don't have a partner for squares or rounds?  Come anyway!  Have two left feet?  Bring

‘em both!  The best thing to bring to lessons and dances is a big SMILE!

Please join Whirl-A-Ways every third Saturday.

We started a new year of dancing in September. All of our officers are returning for another year of service to the dancers.

We are discussing updating the Banner Stealing Guidelines to adopt rules for small clubs who make visitations with less than a square.

The draft of the New Dancer booklet will be available for additions and changes so it will be ready for the November meeting and distribution. We will also hear some final plans for the Fall Festival in November.

We held installation of officers on September 6 before our dance. Cheryl Hagey did the honors as other long-time members were not available.

We did not dance on the second Saturday of September due to the Federation meeting in our hall on the second weekend. A lot was happening then with several members.

We have a board meeting on October 11 to discuss future dance themes, making sure the door hosts and kitchen help lists are filled up, and to discuss results from the council vote on Banner Stealing guidelines.

We have been asked to participate in a dance demo at the Bigfoot BBQ & Brews event at Dallas City Park on September 27 for an hour. This is a new event for Dallas and will involve people grilling for judging, vendors with other kinds of food, and merchandise.

We started slo-two step on September 11. It is unknown at this writing how successful we were at getting new students for the class. More information will be available in the next OFN.

Stephanie Lozano and Marilyn Schmit started waltz lessons on September 14 at 3:30 p.m. and we have a few who are coming from the youth dancers. More news on that next month also.

YAY!! Cooler weather is here at last.

Our next set of Mainstream lessons began on September 10, and we are looking forward to another great class. Randy Dibble started another Plus class on September 17 following our Mainstream class.

The Annual Corn and Cluck Dance was September 19 with chicken races, prizes awarded, and a delicious dinner. October brings us three dances with the 5th Friday on Halloween!! We are making it a Mainstream dance. Get your costumes ready.

We are thankful for all the dancers who have come to dance with us throughout the summer and all year long.

Our Youth are getting ready to start preparing for the Pacific Northwest Teen Square Dance Festival that will be held at Blanchet School May 1-2, 2026. We will see you on the dance floor.

We were dark for our Friday dance in September in favor of the OFSRDC dance and meetings which our youth hosted in partnership with the Salem Swingin' Stars youth.

Willamette Squares had a wonderful summer, thanks to all the folks who came to dance with us! A surprise visit from Lebanon cheered our tiny, little club immeasurably! We had our annual Brisket & More dance at the end of May, which was so well attended we ran out of brisket! Next year we’ll be better prepared.

We’re unable to have lessons this fall, but we are looking forward to a great 2025/2026 season, starting with our annual Oktoberfest dance on September 27 at the Salem Square Dance Center. Don’t forget your lederhosen!

Our August 29 community dance was a rousing success. We welcomed 16 prospective dancers, who had a fabulous time learning some basic calls. About half of them enjoyed it so much that they asked to learn more after the scheduled end time for the lesson. Scott Zinser and Tami Helms generously donated their time to help make this event a success.

Our next PAC dance will be January 30, 2026. We are opting not to dance on the fifth Friday in October because that coincides with Halloween, and many of our dancers have plans or want to stay home to hand out candy to the trick-or-treaters.

Hard to believe we are already thinking about 2026!

A special thank you from B’n’Bs, the staff at Bloom’n Boutique, and the foster kids they serve for generous donations at our “Back to School” night.

Beginning September 17, our dance times are temporarily changing again for lesson season. Our caller/instructor is Darrell Kalmbach. Lessons are from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm each Wednesday. Dance times will be from 7:30 to 9:30, with every third tip Plus, and slightly higher rounds. Angels dance free during lessons and pay only $5 at the door for the dance that night.

Darrell is also teaching mainstream lessons on Sunday afternoons at River City. For more floor time, students are encouraged to attend lessons at both clubs. Both clubs would greatly appreciate angels.

Our club caller, Darrell Kalmbach, will also be calling our Mainstream dance on October 1. Club cuer Tami Helms will cue. On October 15, Mark Wheeler will call, and Tami Helms will cue. And to all Ghosts and Goblins, we will host our Halloween Dance on October 29 (5th Wednesday), with KC Curtis calling and Tami Helms cueing. How spooky can you be???

B’n’Bs dance on 1st, 3rd, and 5th Wednesdays at Abernethy Grange, 15745 Harley Ave., Oregon City. Friends and neighbors are always welcome to come watch us dance.

September saw the start of our square dance lessons. We are excited by the many new faces that turned out to join us. We always need angels if you want to come on Thursday nights.

We were also excited to see the return of BINGO, and so was the community. If you haven't been out to one of our games, we highly recommend it. As we look to October, we are super excited about our anniversary dance on October 4. Scott Zinser will be calling and Julie Steirs cuing. Our theme is gardens and pies. Raffle prizes will be garden items, and our members are bringing lots of yummy pies to share. So if you like pie this is the place to be on Oct 4.

We are DARK on October 25 so that the majority of our members can attend Seaside Sashay. We hope to see you on the dance floor soon.

The Happy Hoppers are excited to start a new year of dancing at Washington Grange #82 in Vancouver, WA. Being dark in August still left many club members traveling to lots of fun square dances offered around the area.

The club's annual picnic and fair demonstration were a success and now September is under way. Craig Abercrombie, club caller, began on Saturday, September 6, with a Plus dance. Five squares kicked up their heels and grooved to the music. Craig also cued round dances. So much fun to be had.

The Happy Hoppers started Basic/Mainstream and Plus lessons on Monday, September 8. Plus is at 6:30, followed by Basic/Mainstream at 7:30 pm. Our club appreciates members being supportive and encouraging to new people. We all have our fingers crossed for a great group of new dancers.

Happy Hoppers will host Craig Abercrombie on the third Saturday in September. He will be calling and cueing a Mainstream dance with some Plus and Rounds. Make your way to our club on September 20. We love to share our newly refinished floor and air conditioning!

October is sneaking up quickly. The Happy Hoppers will dance October 4 with Craig Abercrombie calling and cueing a Plus dance with Rounds. He returns October 18, calling a Mainstream dance with some Plus and Rounds. We will enjoy "fun fall" dances. Come join us, 7-9:30 pm.

Happy Hoppers will host a Beginners Dance on Monday, October 27. (Halloween costumes are optional) This dance will be 7:30-9:00 pm. Craig will be calling. Bring your new and seasoned dancers for a great time!

See you dancing ... Denise and Roz Buddenberg

21 members attended our Summer Potluck and Club Meeting at our caller’s home. The food was plentiful and delicious and a good time was had by all. Thanks to Erin and Darrell for hosting the group!

Our Root Beer Float dance had a small attendance (probably due to the heat), but everyone had a good time and enjoyed the finger foods and root beer floats.

A few club members brought friends to the PAC’s community dance to “try out” square dancing. It was fun and a well-attended dance. Thanks to PAC for hosting.

The club’s first Mainstream lesson was fun with two squares of angels and two new students. Hopefully next week will bring in additional students.

Please join us for September 13 and 27, and October 11 dancing in our air-conditioned hall.

The Club will be DARK for Seaside Sashay on October 25. Hope to see many of you there, as our caller Darrell Kalmbach will be calling with Ray Brendzy for the two-day festival. Two great callers in one place!

The Ramblers had a fun-filled day on September 6 in conjunction with Oregon City Pride. Two of our club members hosted an all-members brunch at their house in Oregon City to fill our tanks for a full day of dancing. We then did a dance demo in the afternoon—it was hard to tell who had more fun, the dancers or the spectators! We finished the day with a free taste of square dancing at Oak Grove. Over the course of the day, we obtained expressions of interest from 22 prospective dancers!

Our lessons started Wednesday, September 10 with a free introduction to square dancing. We welcomed 15 prospective dancers, who had a great time learning some basic calls with our 35 angels. That’s right, we had six squares on our first night at our new venue for lessons: All Saints Episcopal, 4033 SE Woodstock Blvd., Portland. We’ll have another free night on September 17, and then we will teach the Social Square Dance program over the next 12 weeks.

Our September social dance took place on Saturday, September 13, at Oak Grove, with Roger Putzler making his Ramblers debut. We took advantage of a beautiful late summer evening to have a barbecue and potluck before the dance. It was wonderful to catch up on everyone’s very busy summer activities. The dance was typical rambunctious Ramblers revelry. We had 5 squares and were thrilled to welcome a visitation from the Country Cut-ups, who took home a Ramblers banner.

We’re getting down to the wire for registrations for our annual weekend festival, Scares and Squares, which will take place October 10-12 at the Beaverton Elks Lodge. We have dancers registered from all over the Northwest and as far away as Chicago. Imagine being able to dance to callers of the caliber of Vic Ceder, Darren Gallina, and Stephen Cole—and you might not even have to splurge for a motel room. (However, if you need a room, we’ve reserved a special group rate at the Beaverton Best Western. Email rtramblers@gmail.com for details.) If you can’t make it for the entire weekend, we encourage you to attend at least a couple of dance sessions at a cost of $20 per session. We’ll have C-2 dancing on Saturday morning. We will dance all other levels from SSD through A-2 throughout the weekend. You can find the schedule on our website.

We round out the fall with Dan Preedy calling our November 8 dance and Janienne Alexander-Kellogg calling our December 13 dance. Fun times ahead!

SYIAS!

The August in person TVC meeting at the Aloha Grange on the 25th was cancelled due to high temperatures.

The Council highly recommends that all TVC dancers attend the anniversary dances held by other member clubs. On October 4th the Sunset Promenaders will celebrate their 40th anniversary featuring Darrell Kalmbach calling and Tami Helms cueing. Held at the Hillsboro IOOF Hall, a lasagna dinner will be served prior to the dance. Then on the 18th Mix 'N Mingle will celebrate their 41st anniversary at the Winona Grange. There will be cake and M&M's with Randy Dibble calling and Julie Stiers cueing. See their reports below for details.

Since the OFN is published about the 20th of the month, you still have time to plan on attending the Tri Squares 27th anniversary on September 26th with Terry Halley & K.C. Curtis calling and Cuer Sandra Pinion. It will be held at the Kinton Grange with Rounds at 7:00, Plus at 7:15, Mainstream and Rounds at 7:30 with 4th tip Plus.

The next Council event will be a TVC 5th Saturday dance on November 29th. In keeping with the Tri-Council's interest in supporting beginning dancers, the TVC will be having a "New Dancer Jamboree". This is to be a Mainstream dance featuring Scott Zinser calling and Lane Clem cueing. It will be held at the Kinton Grange from 7:30 to 9:30pm.

The TVC is proud to announce the nomination of Lane and Marie Clem for the 2026 Randall Award. There have been nine Randall Award recipients from the TVC, the most from any Council in the State.

We are so fortunate to have Daryl Clendenin as our caller. He is nationally known and has an online class for callers. One of the local students, Renee Ruud, recently had a mild stroke and is recovering from it very nicely. That is until this past week when she fell and broke her femur in two places. We will miss her as she was doing so well with her calling. She has a beautiful voice and has been cueing. She has been recording and while this is a set-back we all know she will be back with us soon.

So, on to October. We will have our normal two dances the first and third Friday evenings, October 2, and 16. We will dance plus from 7 PM to 8PM and mainstream from 8 to 9:30 or so. We do not anticipate the hot weather following us into October.

This summer, we kept our beginners going into mainstream but were slowed down a little because of the hot weather. They did so well, however, they are ready for the new season. Next time I will tell you how are classes are coming along.

Lastly, I encourage everyone to attend the Seaside Sashay on October 24th and 25th. It is a great opportunity to see old friends, make new ones and dance to national callers. See you there.

While the heat waves in August caused us to go dark on two Mondays, the Eager Beavers and guests had a great time at the rest of our Monday afternoons as we danced with the air conditioner on full blast.

On August 30th, the Eager Beavers co-hosted the TVC 5th Saturday “End of Summer” Dance. We felt right at home at the Aloha Grange, with our own Darrell Kalmbach calling and Tami Helms cueing, and there were seven squares on the dance floor!

Hoedowners - Link
August blew the Hoedowners away like a hot desert breeze on a cowboy’s neck. On the 9th we had our “Wild Wild West Dance”. There were cowboy boots, hats, cap guns, two Charlie Russell prints of the old west, bronzes of bucking broncos and a dance floor full of cowboys and cowgirls twirling the night away. The menu included cowboy beans and dogs. Thanks to Michael Kious and Randy Lewis for providing the music.

The Hoedowners had BIG plans for our “Roaring Twenties Dance” on the 23rd but fate and a high-pressure system delivered that desert like weather with a spike of 101 degrees. Even the Grange air conditioning couldn’t cope so the dance was cancelled.

As we look ahead to the October dances, I spy a “Costume Party Dance” on the 11th. We’re all looking forward to October 25th as we go dark for the Seaside Sashay. Hope to see you there!

As fall approaches, we look back on a wonderful summer of dancing and special events. On Monday, August 18th, the hot weather subsided in time for the Oak Hills Squares to host a Fabulously Fun evening of Square and Round dancing on the outdoor patio at Oak Hills Rec Center. The 50’s theme included Classic Car night with several cars on display. Many dancers dressed in 50's attire, and decorations in the Community Room enhanced the spirit of the evening. Mark Wheeler called, and Lane Clem cued for close to 40 dancers, including representatives from several clubs. Door prizes, split the pot, and wonderful food added to the experience and everyone who attended went home with a big smile. "It takes a Village” and the OHS Village came out in full force to create an unforgettable evening.

The hot evenings returned so the club was dark August 25th as well as September 1st for Labor Day. As of this writing, our lessons for new dancers begin September 8th and will continue for 14 consecutive weeks. Round Dancing lessons are being considered being held after our regular dancing evenings.

October brings our annual Halloween Dance to be held on October 27th with costumes and good food to be shared.

Greetings from R Square D. August was full of summer dances to attend. It also was our big membership drive event: Squirrel Fest in Longview, WA. On August 16th we held a street dance and invited participation from bystanders. This will hopefully spark interest in our wonderful form of folk dancing. Terry Halley was the Caller introducing this style of dance to participants. All seemed to enjoy themselves and we hoped to see many at our lesson startup.

September and school time is fast approaching. Our lessons have started back up on Wednesdays. Plus 7P-8P and Basic/Mainstream 8P-9P. Place is 106 NW 8th St Kelso, WA.

October our lessons will be in full swing. We have one dance in October on the 10th. It is our Halloween dance with Craig Abercrombie calling, and Susan Healea cueing. We are dark for our second dance October 25th. We are planning on attending the Seaside Sashay in Seaside, Oregon

On a sad note, we lost a long time member and veteran in August. Scott Lee was well known to many clubs throughout Oregon and Washington. He died unexpectedly while in recovery from a procedure. We will have a Celebration of Scotts life as a friend, dancer, and Veteran at our Veterans Day dance in November. Please keep his best friend and partner Sandy Jensen in your thoughts and prayers.

August activities:

• Our monthly theme dance was “Hawaiian Luau Dance” with most of the dancers wearing Hawaiian attire. Hawaiian food was served at the break. Our Caller Darrell Kalmbach and Cuer Tami Helms contributed the tropical theme with Hawaiian music.

• Our annual picnic was special this year as it was held at the home of Darrell and Erin. We had thirty dancers at the picnic, and we all enjoyed the grilled hamburgers, sausages, and all kinds of food and desserts. It was a wonderfully comfortable back yard with many shade trees and cool grass. It was a good, relaxed time with a lot of friends. Thank you, Darrell, and Erin, for having our picnic at your home.

October Activities:

• October fourth is the Sunset Promenaders 40th Anniversary. To celebrate the club is having a full Lasagna Dinner at 6:30 PM. Darrell and Tami will be the Caller and Cuer for a Mainstream dance following the meal. We are hoping and are planning to have a lot of dancers for the meal and dance to help us celebrate our anniversary. There are many memories over the 40 years. For you that do not know, we dance at the Hillsboro Odd Fellows Hall, 267 E. Main St. Hillsboro, Oregon. There is extra parking across the street at the bank.

• Other dances in October include Plus dances on the 2nd, 16th, and the 30th. The dance on the 30th is a special event with national caller Tony Oxendine calling with Darrell Kalmbach and Tami Helms Cueing. All the Club’s door donations are $7 per person..

We enjoy visitors, and we invite more dancers to visit us both at our Plus Dances on the first, third, and fifth Thursdays and the Mainstream Dances on first and second Saturdays, all at Hillsboro’s Odd Fellows Hall at Third and Main upstairs {elevator available). The dance hall is air-conditioned and has a great wood dance floor.

Welcome Back from Tri Squares! We’re thrilled to be dancing again after a break during the hot summer months!

Summer Highlights: This summer brought some great memories and Hawaiian-themed fun at two lively visitations; Sunset Promenaders on August 2nd, and then Bachelors & Bachelorettes on August 20th. We had two full squares and brought home a B&B banner! We’d love to see you at Tri Squares soon so we can return it in person.

Our annual picnic at Snyder Park in Sherwood on August 10th was also a highlight.

Along with enjoying great company, we officially kicked off our Lesson Publicity Campaign. A big thank you to Dale Brabham for leading the charge again this year! We had cards, flyers, and lawn signs available for everyone to help spread the word.

Upcoming Lessons: Starting Sunday, September 28th, we’ll offer Basic Mainstream Square Dance Lessons from 3:30 – 5:30 PM. There will be 10 lessons in total. The first two lessons (September 28th & October 5th) are free for new dancers—we hope to have a crowd show up to give square dancing a try!

We’re also excited to offer Cha-Cha Round Dance Lessons on Sundays from 2:00 – 3:15 PM.

Save the Date! Join us for our 27th Anniversary Dance on Friday, September 26th at the Kinton Grange. It will be a special night, and we’d love to have you there to celebrate with us!

Note: We’ll be dark on October 10th due to a Grange scheduling conflict.

Our next dance after the anniversary will be Friday, October 28th, with a "Favorite Movie or TV Character" theme—perfect for Halloween!

We’re looking forward to seeing you at Tri Squares soon!
