Clubs have been busy finding new people to serve on their board or volunteer to assist with dances. I can tell you from experience, it can be hard to find new people willing to take on a leadership role. Keep up the fight! Its the life blood of our clubs and it certainly helps in getting new ideas or viewpoints at our board or council meetings.
The club I belong to recently asked a new dancer to join our board at an appointed position and we’ve already benefited from their opinion. They still have a lot to learn about the makings of a club, but again, their perspective can be enlightening.
When its “announcement” time at a dance, think about telling the dancers about the opportunity to serve the club. Don’t just say it one time, but mention it several times over year. When you’re sitting next to someone who hasn’t ever taken a leadership role, say something about it. Now don’t be pushy either, but tell them about the need the club has and now they can help.
Just sayin’.

I am pleased to share that hotel room blocks have been established for the 2027 Mid‑Winter Festival with the following local hotels:
Booking links will be provided on the MWF 2027 website and the MWF Facebook page when they become available.
At all three hotels, the festival room rate is $128 per night, plus applicable taxes. This rate is based on two (2) adults per room. Additional guests may incur additional charges, consistent with each hotel’s individual policies.
Each hotel also maintains its own early check‑in and late check‑out policies and associated fees. These policies are standard throughout the hospitality industry and are set by the hotel, not by the festival.
An Important Reminder About Conduct and Expectations
I also need to address an important issue that arose during the previous festival.
After the last event, I was contacted directly by hotel management regarding unacceptable interactions toward hotel staff, including staff being yelled at and berated for enforcing standard hotel policies—particularly related to early check‑in requests, some of which were as early as 8:00 a.m.
To be clear: this behavior is unacceptable.
Hotel staff are doing their jobs by upholding their company’s policies. While accommodations may have been made in past years, past accommodations—whether remembered or assumed—do not create an expectation or entitlement for future exceptions. Early check‑in and late check‑out fees are widely recognized, standard practices across the hotel industry.
I want to be very clear that I do not control hotel policies, fee structures, or room availability. Disagreements with those policies should never be directed at front‑desk staff, who do not have the authority to override them and should not be placed in a confrontational situation for simply doing their jobs.
I was deeply disappointed to learn that the actions of a small number of individuals were serious enough that at least one hotel considered discontinuing its room block with the festival. That outcome would affect not only future festival lodging options, but also the reputation of the square dance community as a whole.
For the 2027 Mid‑Winter Festival, participating hotels will be enforcing their individual early check‑in and late check‑out policies and fees. My expectation is simple and firm: all hotel staff must be treated with courtesy, professionalism, and respect at all times.
The vast majority of dancers consistently meet this standard, and I sincerely appreciate that. This message is being shared to set clear expectations, protect the relationships that make our festival possible, and ensure that Mid‑Winter Festival continues to be welcomed and supported by our local hotels.
Thank you for your understanding, cooperation, and continued support. I look forward to a positive and successful 2027 Mid‑Winter Festival.
Sincerely,
Brooke Davison

Please join us and encourage your newer dancers to join us.
And, please encourage any dancers who even remotely think they might like to try calling and/or cueing to get in touch with a member of CCCA for music and any help. We are doing an Open Mic for those to try their hand at calling and/or cueing at our August 29 dance.
The members of CCCA remember square dancer and long time hall board member, Mimi Mills, who passed away quite recently, quite fondly. Mimi took care of hall business for all of us, and CCCA appreciated her dedication. CCCA remembers the support she gave us for over two and a half decades, and are humbly grateful. Thank you Mimi Mills. May you rest in peace.

Our classes continue to go well on Wednesday evenings at 7:15PM at the ESDC. Tim Matteson is getting the new advanced dancers up to par. It will be super good to have more advanced dancers in our area. While we normally dance to recorded tips by such callers as Bronc Wise or Darrell Lipscomb, we sometimes have a live caller. On Sept. 20 we will have the pleasure of dancing to Dan Preedy who always does a really great job of calling for our small group.
We dance mostly on 2nd and 4th Sundays, but there are months depending on when holidays fall that we will dance on the1st and 3rd Sundays. In May we will dance on the 3rd and 17th. In June because of Father’s Day I suspect we will dance the 2nd and 4th Sundays. We dance from 1:30 to 3:30PM in Hall B of the Emerald Square Dance Center at 20th and Yolanda in Springfield. Please come join us if you are in the area. Since we are so few in number, it is best to call Fred Beisse at (458) 221-3564 to make sure we are dancing. Our tentative schedule can be found at cas-sd.yolasite.com.
Happy dancing, everyone,

We are sad to announce that Clara Fay Anderso, long tiem member of Whirl-A-Ways and former member of Single Trees, passed away recently a trhe young age of 98. She had not been able to dance for some years due to health issues. Clara Fay enjoyed classic cars and owned a 1956 Thunderbird and a 1968 Mustang convertible and participated in the annual Function4Junction classic car cruise. She and her late husband, Robert, owned and operated an erosion control and landscaping company. Clara Fay was a native-born Oregonian and an active member of Business and Professional Women. Clara Fay made a difference and is sorely missed.

Casual dress is always appropriate. We always have a lot of goodies too.
Please call our president, David Lajoie at 541-520-7311 to make sure we are dancing. We rarely go dark, but you never know.

(See our flyer for details.)
We will be dark on the 23rd, Memorial Day weekend. This year it seems especially appropriate to honor and remember our military.

Our Annual Hobo Dance was a blast with 5 squares and three different Hobo Stews-Slow Elk, Cluckers and Foraged, made for the first time by yours truly. There was fresh bread to go along with the stew and lots of delicious desserts.
April 3rd was our Fundraiser Dance for the teens preparing for the Pacific Northwest Teen Square Dance Festival May 1-2, 2026 at Blanchet School. Michael Kious (one of our two caller coaches) and George Hermann called for us, Randy Lewis cued. There were 9 squares in attendance!!! A total of 74 dancers. The teens baked up delicious goodies to auction off and some of our club members also brought items to add. The goodies raised over $400.00. We were delighted to have our two team callers get up on stage as well as Silver City's team callers. These kids are amazing! Silver City Squares managed to get one of their banners back with 15 members in attendance. Thank you to all who donated. The final total was just over $1000.00. We are incredibly grateful for the support.
April 17th is our 60th Birthday Dance. Come join us for some cake and dancing.
We will be DARK on May 1st as we will be at Blanchet School for the Teen Festival.
May 15th Michael Kious will be our guest caller with our club cuer Randy Lewis.
May 29th is our 5th Friday Plus Dance.
Hope to see many of you at the Teen Festival and of course across the square. Once again, thank you for your support.

Our March 20 Open Mic night with MCs Thomas Buchheit and Katie Marteny was a hit! We had two squares for most of the night, and at one time we had three. KC Curtis (Silverton’s caller) and his wife Linda encouraged the youth callers and cuers. They did great. You, too, can hear their talents at the Pacific NW Teen Square Dance Festival competitions happening all day at the Blanchet Catholic School in Salem on May 2 with Terry Halley as MC. At that evening’s dance, the winners will be announced.
Hey man, the Hippie Dance was happening on Friday, April 3. Several dancers came clad in attire of the era, but the surprise was the costume winners. Stephanie Lozano, our Flower Power cuer, won the female prize. Caller Dude Terry Halley took the male prize. Our nature-loving couple was Dave and Cathy Spaulding from Tri-Squares. Thank you to the three squares that made this fun!
Won’t you join us for the 60’s Hillbilly Dance on May 1? Go ahead, wear your jeans with a rope belt. You’ll find our cuer, Tom Klug, wearing his floppy hat with a straw in his mouth; it is his favorite theme! I wonder if Scott will open the dance in suspenders and wearing a long-john tee. Of course, there are always Granny glasses and Eli Mae’s braids for the ladies. Join us starting at 7:30pm.
Our patriotic dance on May 15 carries the theme Flags of Valor. This is KC Curtis at his best and sharing the stage is Lane Clem. May 16 is Armed Forces Day, a unified day of recognition for the US Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Space Force. We’ll display the flags of all these branches, and veterans will dance free. Come help us pay tribute to the active personnel, men and women, currently serving to protect our country.
Scott Zinser and Stephanie Lozano will share the stage on June 5. Come let Scott know you missed him.

We have our regular club dance coming up on April 25 with Scott Zinser and Julie Stiers. We have unfortunately gotten a little sad news. Our Spring Fling dance weekend, scheduled for May 1-3, has had to be canceled. Our featured caller had a family medical emergency. If you pre-purchased tickets, you can roll them over to next year or request a refund. While the first Saturday is our normal dance night, we were unable to find a caller for that night on such short notice so we will be dark on May 2.
We continue to have Bingo at the Barn the 2nd and 4th Fridays of the month. On May 23, we will have our regular club dance at the Barn with Scott Zinser and Julie Stiers. We will not have our 5th Saturday Plus dance on May 30. Instead, we plan to support the Tri-Council Dance at the Washington Grange in Vancouver. We look forward to seeing you all in a square soon!!

The May TVC meeting will be an in-person meeting at the Aloha Grange. This will be an Executive Board meeting for the purposes of budget work and the transition of new officers.
The Council highly recommends that all TVC dancers attend the anniversary dances held by other member clubs. In May our most senior club, Valley Squares, are celebrating their 77th Anniversary featuring the calling and cueing of Mark Wheeler & Connie Clark. This dance will be held at Aloha Grange from 7pm to 9:30pm. And a sad note, the TVC was notified at our last meeting that the Valley Squares are folding up shop so this will be their final dance.
On May 30th the Tri Council Dance will be held at the Washington Grange in Vancouver. The dance is hosted by the Evergreen Council and will feature Scott Zinser calling with the cueing of Susan Healea. Beginning at 7pm this will be a Mainstream dance with every third tip Plus until 9:30pm.

March was full of fun and celebration. We welcomed spring with our Spring Fling on March 27th, and earlier on March 13th we enjoyed a festive “Bit O’ the Irish” dance, complete with a sea of green in honor of St. Patrick’s Day. Several members also traveled to dance with the Hoedowners at the Aloha Grange on March 14th.
We were especially excited to graduate our newest dancers in March and officially welcome them into the club. It’s wonderful to see our community continue to grow each year!
Looking ahead to May, we have two themed dances planned. On May 8th, join us for Fiesta Time, wear your bright, colorful attire and stay for festive snacks after the dance. Then on May 22nd, it’s our Hippie Hoedown, so break out your tie-dye, beads, and sunglasses for a groovy evening.
We’ll also be visiting the Valley Squares on May 1st for their farewell anniversary dance.
Finally, May marks the start of our newly elected and appointed officers.
It’s a joyful time of year, and we hope to see you out on the dance floor soon!
