Oregon Federation News
June 2026

A publication of the Oregon Federation of Square and Round Dance Clubs

Printed 20 June 2026
President's Corner

Last year at the Federation Summer Festival, I noticed something that really stood out to me. Although I’ve attended both the Mid-Winter and Summer Festivals for many years, it wasn’t until serving as Federation President that I truly recognized the difference in attendance between the two events.

In Central Oregon, it has long been the practice for clubs to “go dark” during a Federation Festival — not only to avoid competing events, but also to show support for the Federation and the dancers who travel from all over the state to attend.

I was surprised to learn that this is not a statewide practice. If your area or council does not currently support this tradition, I encourage you to reconsider. Federation Festivals are more than just dances — they are an opportunity to connect with dancers from across Oregon, strengthen friendships, and celebrate the activity we all enjoy so much.

Participation in Federation activities can be enlightening, rewarding, and a lot of fun. The more dancers who attend and support these events, the stronger our dance community becomes.

The more the merrier!

Joyce Welton, Federation President

Editor's Note

As we approach summer, be sure to check "Where & When" to make sure your visitor targets are still dancing.

Our May 30 (fifth Saturday) dance at the end of May is for the new dancers.  We encourage hard badgers to show up in numbers and show the new dancers how much fun this awesome activity is. We start at 7:00 with pre-rounds and 7:30 - 9:30 is mainstream with with rounds.  We’re at the  Emerald Dance Center,  / 2095 Yolanda in Springfield.

We had two dances in April, one at the level of our advanced class which will be graduating in June. Tim Matteson called that dance for us. He comes all the way from Springfield! We appreciate having a live caller now and then and the class of course appreciated getting more floor time (they are inited to come to Spin Cycle Squares and Tim will call to their leve curing the advanced tips). It was sad that quite a few people had prior engagements or were ill so we did not get the two squares we had all been hoping for. Perhaps this month on May 17 we will see a good turnout of students and us old timers.

We will dance twice in June on the 14th and 28th. Please let Fred Beise know you plan to come so we can book the hall when we have a square or more. His number is (458) 221-3564. You can also ask to be placed on our email notification list. Our tentative schedule can be accessed at our website: cas-sd.yolasite.com.

We hope to be dancing during the summer months, but will be dark in August for the Life’s A Dance Festival which will have some advanced dancing scheduled.

Hope to see evryone in a square one of these days,.

This is my last official report for Whirl-A-Ways as we have now merged with Single Trees to form Emerald Valley Dancers.  Both clubs' roster numbers have fallen, but both have dedicated and willing members to help.  With one club we have more of those wonderful members willing to take on a job or office.  Thanks ever so much.

Whirl-A-Ways started many years ago with Ivan Koehn as their caller.  After Ivan retired Bob Ewing and then Michael Kious and finally Roger Putzler were hired to call.  Ivan passed away a number of years ago.  His widow, Donna, lives in a retirement home in Eugene.

Single Trees also started many years ago with Bob and Babe Roshau calling and being intstrumental in developing the club.  This was a singles club, but of late, it's been a club for couples as well.  In fact, a lot of Single Tree couples met each other at lessons or dances.  It's funny how that works out.  Single Trees had a number of callers over the years.  I believe Dan McCornack called the longest.

Emerald Valley Dancers are on their way to making new memories and have fun times.  I will be the 'new' reporter for our new club.

We dance every Sunday from 4 to 6.  Tim will call to the floor.  Some Sundays it's all advanced, and some Sundays it's all Plus, and some Sundays it's a mix.  We always have lots of goodies.  One of our dancers can't dance any longer but comes each Sunday to visit.  We encourage you to come and dance and visit.

Please call to make sure we are dancing.  We rarely ever go dark, but you just never know.   Call David Lajoie, our president, at 541-520-7311 to check.

The dance year for our club dances is winding down, with a special grand finale you won't want to miss. But before that, here's a reminder: we will be dark on May 23.

Our June 13 Luau will feature an Island dinner at 6:10 p.m., before dancing begins at 7:00. We dance mainstream, with third tips plus. Bruce Lowther and Judy Russell will be calling and cueing. The dinner is free with your $7 admission. Cynthia's exploding volcano cake will erupt during a brief break during the dance. The cake will taste great, too. Hula dancing and island attire? Of course. We are looking forward to hosting you. Check out all the details on our pretty flyer in this issue.

We plan to keep dancing during the summer so that we will see you around. Our club dances will return in September.

The club graduated the plus class on May 3 and then spent two more Sundays workshopping the new moves that came from the advanced list. So now we are aware of them for September. Thank you, KC, for an entertaining class for the last three months.

We were dark for the first Saturday dance in May in order to support the local youth competitors. They did well, and we look forward to seeing them with their trophies and big smiles for their accomplishments.

We had a board meeting on May 9, and various items of interest were discussed. More information will be available next month.

Our next three dances are no-theme dances, and then we will help KC Curtis celebrate his birthday on July 4 with a George Strait-themed dance. Come and cowboy out with us. It should be very entertaining. Flyers will be posted soon, if not already.

Hot August Rounds is coming soon, and we are receiving registrations already. Some of the cuers are picking slots to cue and possibly to do a workshop during the weekend. All round dancers are welcome to attend at the Emerald Dance Center in Springfield.

We held a meeting in April without a quorum and then a follow-up Zoom meeting with the missing officers in attendance. We voted in the new officers and approved the previous minutes from January. We will have another meeting before Hot August Rounds to put the final plans in action and to see who selects a slot to cue or work a few moves in a workshop that weekend.

All the members have paid their dues for various amounts of years. We are in full force.

June 18 will see the club celebrate 50 years of existence with a dance party from 7:30-9:30 p.m., with Randy Lewis doing the cueing. The flyer is in the flyer section of the OFN.

On May 17, the Sunday class will graduate nine dancers from the phase 3-4 Waltz class. We had one couple come from Lincoln City every week, and we so appreciate their attendance and friendship. They are a joy to have around.

We will start phase 2 two-step in September and hope to have another good class to get them on their way to the round dance realm of our fun hobby.

The Pacific Northwest Teen Square Dance Festival is over for another year. We had a great time! Thank you to all the volunteers who helped judge, manage the floor movements in and out, MC'd, assisted with food, check-in tables, score room, sign changing, score running, door monitoring, and seclusion room. All of the help made things run more smoothly.

Each of the five clubs competing this year took home some awards. The awards were nicely spread out with no particular club dominating. This year, we had Wesburn Wranglers from Canada, Jacks & Jills and Shooting Stars from Washington, and Silver City Squares and Salem Swingin' Stars from Oregon, with about 100 dancers competing in squares, rounds, calling, and cueing.

Hope to see you at a dance soon.

We enjoyed our last dance of the current season on May 1. It was a blast with a Star Wars theme.

April was especially noteworthy for Willamette Squares! Our lessons are going well; however, winter term students don’t get the benefit of the many New Dancer dances held in the fall. So, Willamette Squares and Lebanon Square Circlers each decided to host a New Dancer dance to give our students much-needed floor time. Ours was on April 25, and it was a great success! We are very grateful for all the experienced dancers who came to support our newbies.

Remember, Willamette Squares doesn’t go dark during the summer. Starting with our May dance, we will be calling the new Mainstream format. Our May dance is also our Annual Brisket dance. This year we’ll have plenty of food! Join us at 6:30 p.m. for brisket sandwiches with all the fixings!

We look forward to attending the Tri-Council Dance on May 30, hosted by the Evergreen Council.

Our next PAC dance will be Friday, July 31 at Oak Grove. Our theme will be Summer Fun. Feel free to wear you cool and comfortable summer attire. Our caller will be Darrell Kalmbach, and our cuer will be Tami Helms.

The PAC has decided to change its meeting schedule from 10 times a year to four times a year. We found that we don’t really have enough essential council business to require almost monthly meetings. We hope that meeting less frequently will reduce demands on volunteers’ time and help attract prospective candidates for Board positions. Under our bylaws, we can call ad hoc meetings if issues arise between our regularly scheduled quarterly meetings.

Our 60’s Hillbilly Dance on May 1 had lots of competition with other events, such as the Valley Squares anniversary and the teen festival in Salem, resulting in a low turnout, but it was still a very fun dance! We spared Tom Klug, our scheduled cuer, from making the trip over the mountain as we suspected low attendance. We missed Tom and Debbie, but thanks for understanding.

Congratulations to the Valley Squares May 1 anniversary dance with ten squares in attendance to celebrate their last dance after 77 years as a club.

Our May 15 dance carried the theme Flags of Valor, which is a unified day of recognition for all branches of unformed service. KC Curtis called and Lane Clem cued.

June is the last month that Chaps will dance before going dark for the summer in July and August. Please join us as we close our dance season with:

June 5: Scott Zinser and Stephanie (and John) Lozano sharing the stage from 7:30-10 pm.

June 19: “At the Hop” with Terry Halley calling and Sandra Pinion cueing 50’s & 60’s tunes. We love this theme!

Country Cut-Ups - Link
Hello Friends!

The Cut-ups have been very busy. We had our Barn Sale, and it was a great success. We also had a great dance at the end of April.

Unfortunately, we had to cancel our Spring Fling this year, but we are looking forward to holding it next year. Bingo nights have been a lot of fun, and on May 9 we hosted a Bingo Fundraiser for Mt. Hood Hospice that was a great success.

We will be having our Bingo nights at the Boring Barn on May 22, June 12, and June 26, and then we will not have Bingo again until September.

We have a club dance on May 23 with Scott Zinser calling and Julie Stiers cueing. We will not have our fifth Saturday Plus dance on May 30, as we are going dark that Saturday to attend the Tri-Council Dance at the Washington Grange in Vancouver. We will have our regular club dance on June 6 with Michael Kious calling and Julia Buchheit cueing. Our regular club dance on June 27 will feature Scott Zinser calling and Julie Stiers cueing.

We have ongoing line dance classes at the Boring Barn every Wednesday and Thursday evening from 5 pm to 7 pm.

We look forward to seeing you all out on the dance floor soon!

The Happy Hoppers are enjoying the month of May. Washington Grange #82 in Vancouver, WA, has been the place to be!

Our club's 67th Anniversary Dance featuring Craig Abercrombie and Adam Christman is always a big hit and so much fun! Hope you were able to be there! The cake and Ice cream were yummy!

Happy Hoppers celebrated Cinco de Mayo on Monday, May 4, with a potluck dinner. This was a great way for our club to kick off our three workshops. Craig Abercrombie worked with dancers to step beyond their current level of dancing. There was terrific attendance with such a fun group of dancers laughing and enjoying time together. A cookie social followed to finish up the Happy Hoppers dancing before our summer break.

Our club will be dark during the months of June, July and August. We encourage everyone to keep dancing through the summer whenever possible. Enjoy visiting other clubs and festivals.

The Happy Hoppers will have a summer picnic for members on August 2, 2026. More information will be available on our website (happy-hoppers.com) and our club's Happy Hoppers Hello.

Our club will be back to lessons and first and third Saturday dances in September. Plan now to join us and let's all spread the word ... Square dancing is awesome!

See you dancing, Denise and Roz Buddenberg

The April 27th TVC meeting presided by TVC President Sally Duyck was held via Zoom with 18 attendees. There are only two TVC sponsored dance events remaining in 2026. These were highlighted by vice president Judy Shnase and then a discussion regarding the upcoming 2027 dance season. The remaining dances are ‘Dancing in the Park’ in August and our annual ‘New Years Eve’ dance.

The next major topic of discussion had to do with the frequency of the TVC meetings. It was suggested that we change TVC meetings from monthly to quarterly. After some discussion it was generally favored that the TVC hold the regular meetings quarterly instead of monthly. Additional Board meetings would be held as necessary. No final decision was made.

The TVC officers for 2026-2027 were installed by Dale Brabham and are: President - Sally Duyck; Vice-President - Judy Schnase; Secretary - Andis Garuts; Treasurer - Bonni Lesser; State Delegate - Marie Clem, and Alternate State Delegate - Dale Brabham.

The Council highly recommends that all TVC dancers attend the anniversary dances held by other member clubs. On June 15th the Oak Hills Squares are celebrating their Anniversary featuring the calling and cueing of Mark Wheeler & Lane Clem. This dance will be held at the Oak Hills Recreation Center on 153rd and Oak Hills Drive (2400 NW 153rd Avenue, Beaverton), from 6:30pm to 9:00pm.

You still have time to plan on attending the May 30th Tri Council Dance at the Washington Grange in Vancouver. The dance is hosted by the Evergreen Council and will feature Scott Zinser calling with the cueing of Susan Healea. Beginning at 7:00pm this will be a Mainstream dance with every third tip Plus until 9:30pm.

The next TVC Meeting will be on Monday, June 22 at 7 p.m. in person at the Aloha Grange. This will be our next all-TVC Meeting; the May meeting will be Executive Board-only, on May 25, in person, at the Aloha Grange.

Columbia River Dancers - Link
Last month I said I would give some information about the latest information coming out of Caller Lab regarding the new call order for the various levels of dancing.

I believe the thinking about the old mainstream list was that there was a mixed difficulty level, that it was a big list and that it was not well focused. Thirteen calls were moved from mainstream to plus and only one (single circle to a wave) was added to mainstream. This means that mainstream became simpler by moving many calls to plus and became more streamlined, capped at around 50 calls. About four calls were moved from plus to A1.

As I understand the thinking behind the new changes, besides making mainstream simpler, is to think of plus as intermediate and A1 as advanced, also to make pattern recognition the style in plus and concept application the style in A1. I believe some callers will mix some A1 calls in with the plus because they were there before.

Now regarding the Columbia River Dancers; we finished our new class in May with a spaghetti feed and dance. Since we do not want to lose dancers over the summer, and recognizing how hot our grange hall can get, we are going to have workshops on Sundays, beginning June 7th. We will be doing plus and a little bit more from 5-6 PM and mainstream from 6 to 7:30. This is ONLY when the temperature is going to be below 90 degrees at 5 PM. So, if you want a head start on the new line-up of calls or just want to spend a fun evening with good friends, come join us.

Please note that the club will be dark in July and August as to our regular dances.

Hope to see you in a square this summer.

Eager Beavers - Link
The highlight for April was Eager Beavers’ 51st Anniversary Dance, where we had 67 attendees with six squares of members and guests on the floor from beginning to end! Our caller Darrell Kalmbach worked his usual magic to make it a wonderful afternoon, and we enjoyed having both Tami Helms and Lane Clem cue our rounds as we celebrated our club’s rich history and bright future. After the dancing, we gathered for a delicious food selection and plenty of social time, sharing stories and catching up with friends old and new. Thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate and helped make the day special.

June brings us five Mondays of dancing at our usual 1:00 to 3:00 schedule now that our Plus students have graduated. Darrell will begin each dance with a short workshop session to help us keep our skills sharp. We’ll kick off our summer tradition of dressing Hawaiian style on the second Monday of the month through September, although it’s optional. We are fortunate to have air-conditioning so we can enjoy ourselves without worrying about the heat.

We dance every Monday at the Aloha Grange with Darrell Kalmbach calling, and Tami Helms and Lane Clem cueing Phase II and III Rounds on alternate Mondays. For current dancing information, please see our website at https://EagerBeavers.info. (See link above).

The Hayshakers dance every Sunday from 5:00-7:00 p.m. in the Pacific Grange on Hwy 101, halfway between Seaside and Astoria with Mark Wheeler calling.

In April we completed our Mainstream lessons and welcomed new Hayshakers Ruth Johnson, Linda Anderson, Bob Clay and Susan Marmaduke.

Elections were held and our new Board of Directors is: Kathy Liebowitz as President; Kathleen Teeple, Vice-President; Sandy Pope, Secretary; Cynthia Weber, Treasurer; Roberta Muehlberg and Randy Pope, Members At-Large.

On April 4th Fourteen Hayshakers drove to Nehalem to attend a Celebration of Life for Cornelius “Corny” O’Quinn.

Until lessons begin again in September, dances between 5 and 7 o’clock will incorporate ALL of the current Mainstream calls. There will be Plus workshops between 7 & 7:30 except on the fourth Sunday when there’ll be a potluck dinner at that time.

Oak Hills Squares has enjoyed a wonderful winter season. Our lessons with Mark Wheeler culminated in a joyful graduation of eight new dancers on April 27th, and we are delighted to welcome them to our membership. Additionally, thanks to Lane Clem’s patient instruction over the past few months, the club will now incorporate Round Dancing on select dates throughout the year (TBA).

We recently celebrated Cinco de Mayo with festive attire, decorations, and refreshments while enjoying both Mainstream and Round dancing.

As we move into the summer, Oak Hills Squares is pleased to announce that we will continue dancing through the season. Our venue, the Oak Hills Recreation Center, is air-conditioned for a comfortable experience. Starting June 1st, summer hours will be every Monday from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM, with the exception of July 6th, when we will be dark for the Fourth of July holiday.

On June 15th, we will celebrate our Club Anniversary with dancing from 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM. Mark Wheeler will be calling and Lane Clem will be cueing. April Club Activities:

• The club’s Mainstream Square Dance Lessons are over now with eight students graduating. Darrell Kalmbach did an excellent job instructing and teaching the students the new mainstream moves that take effect in September. The students danced in the last couple of Club Dances and did great, and we also do appreciate the angel dancers’ work of coming weekly to help. In fact, the angels also got to learn the new Mainstream moves coming up in September, and those move changes do have changes the angels do not know.

• The Club had a nice Easter Dance with Darrell calling all Gospel songs and music on April fourth.

June Club Activities:

• Clubs’ Plus dances in June are on the 4th and 18th and the Mainstream dances are on the 6th and 20th. June 6th Dance will be with guest Caller Daryl Clendenin and Club Cuer Tami Helms Cuer. June 20th the Caller will be Darrell Kalmbach and Lane Clem as the Cuer.

• June seems to be kind of a calm month for Square Dancing, maybe an enjoyable time to visit another Club besides going just to your own Club and seeing some new people and making new friends. Just a thought.

Tri Squares - Link
The dancers at TriSquares kept the floor lively this spring and are heading into summer with smiles, music, and plenty of swings and circles!

Recent Dances:

April 10th, “Grace Notes” - Terry Halley and Sandra Pinion led an uplifting evening of gospel music and singing calls. The dancers were truly “in tune” all night long, even if a few allemande lefts were slightly off-key!

April 24th, “Rock and Roll” - The hall was shaking with Beatles and Beach Boys favorites as Terry called and Sandra cued a fun-filled evening of rockin’ square dancing. Nobody needed Help! to keep the lines moving.

Coming Events:

June 12th, “Stars & Stripes” - Join us for a patriotic Friday evening with Terry Halley calling and Sandra Pinion cueing. Wear your red, white, and blue and help us salute summer with lively dancing and good fellowship.

June 26th, “Summertime Ice Cream Social” - Our season finale before the annual summer hiatus! Enjoy an evening of dancing, laughter, and ice cream with Terry and Sandra. Wave Steppers - Link
Wavesteppers dance at the Tillamook Senior Center from 4-6pm on Tuesday each week. Terry Halley will be calling the 2nd and 4th Tuesday each month. We are still working on a regular caller for the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month.

The address of the Tillamook Senior Center is 316 Stillwell Avenue, Tillamook. Located on the corner of 4th and Stillwell there is no on site parking and little street parking. The huge Safeway parking lot is directly across the street. Our dances are held weekly on Tuesdays from 4:00 to 6:00 and we always have food and snacks.
