Oregon Federation News
July 2026

A publication of the Oregon Federation of Square and Round Dance Clubs

Printed 22 June 2026
President's Corner

The Randall Award is the highest honor the Federation can bestow upon a square or round dancer. Named for past Federation President Buddy Randall, this award recognizes individuals who have given outstanding service to the Federation and to square and round dancing in Oregon — especially those dedicated people who work tirelessly behind the scenes, often without recognition.

Your council can provide additional information and support for submitting a nomination, and the nomination form is available on the Federation website. Think about the person in your club, council, or festival group who is always there — the one willing to do whatever needs to be done and who can always be counted on. Those quiet, dependable volunteers are the heart of our organization.

Perhaps it’s time to recognize them with a Randall Award nomination.

Joyce Welton, Federation President

Editor's Note

Summer is a great time to go on visitations. Because many clubs go dark, be sure to check "Where & When" to make sure you don't get surprised.

Join me in celebrating 250 years of the grand experiment called the "United States of America".

We just received word that national caller Mike Sikorsky passed away today, June 20. We'll post an obituary when one is available.

Cascade Callers & Cuers Assoc
We had a small but enthusiastic dance May 30.  It was a new dancers/mainstream dance. I learned that our president and his wife had car trouble.  We had equipment so all was okay!  And the president and his wife got everything taken care of.

CCCA is sponsoring Life's a Dance festival slated for August 13,14 and 15 with national caller, Pat Carnathan, from California.  Pat calls world-wide through A2.  Our own Rikki Labato is the featured cuer.  Look for the flyer.  Mike Kious is in charge of this fun weekend in Springfield.  Join us!

Our next dance is open mic for any dancers wsho thinks they might like to try calling and/or cueing.  Christina has a number of dancers wishing to try their hand at cueing.  Please, if you are reading this, tell your caller or cuer, and we'll help you.  This is the way caller Sandy Harris got started.  Jim Voll handed her a record to learn.  Voila!  So, it could happen to you.  It's a lot of fun.  Yes, it's a lot of work too, but it's worth it!

See you at our next Fifth Saturday Dance, August 29.  7:00 - Pre-Rounds and 6:30 to 9:30 squares andto rounds.  We danace at the Emerald Dance Center in Springfield.

Christina always bring cake and ice cream to this dance as her birthday is August 31.  The big one this year!  Which one???

Christina Corelli, Secretary for CCCA

We had two advanced dances in June on the 14th and 28th. Our advanced class had covered all the calls by the 14th so they were once again invited to join us and of course since they graduated on the 24th of June they can now attend any of our advanced dances held on Sundays, usually on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month. We were all delighted in May when we had enough dancers turn up to form two squares! We haven’t had two squares on the floor since before COVID. Yay!!! We all had a good time that Sunday dancing to Tim Matteson. In June we danced to recorded tips.

We will dance, we hope, two times in July on the 12th and 26th, but perhaps only once in August since the hall will have a square dance festival on the 2nd weekend (14th-16th), and a round dance weekend on the 3rd weekend. We will try for two dances in August but have not determined dates yet. Please check the website, cas-sd.yolasite.com, to see our tentative schedule.

Since we don’t keep a regular schedule because we don’t dance unless we know for certain that we have a square of dancers, please call Fred Beisse at 458-221-3564 to make sure we are dancing. We dance in Hall B which is in the rear of the Emerald Square Dance Center at 2095 Yolanda Ave. in Springfield off I-105. It has its own parking lot. Please come join us if you are in the area. The dress code is always casual.

See you in a square,

Gaynor Hintz

We dance every Sunday from 4:00 to 6:00.  Tim calls to the floor so some Sundays it's plus and advanced or all advanced or mainstream, etc..  There’s something for everyone and lots of goodies and camaraderie.  It’s always casual dress.

Please call David Lajoie at 541-520-7311 to make sure we are dancing.  We usually do, but there may be an exception.  We love company!

We had a successful Spring Fling dance on May 30 at the Salem Square Dance Center. We danced two to three squares for the night. Seven callers and three cuers were in attendance for the dancers to enjoy.

We had a meeting on May 21, and we re-elected most of the officers but elected a new Treasurer, Lila McKamey. We also discussed when to start new dancer dances in the Mid-Willamette Council. The Fall Festival is on October 31 (Halloween), and it was decided that the first new dancer dances should start the following weekend. It was expressed that only one new dancer dance a weekend should occur. There are enough weekends that the dances don’t need to double up this season. We will see how things work out in the fall.

We are dark for the rest of the summer to attend dances, festivals, take some downtime, and vacation.

Following prep and practice, Cherry City Cloggers continue into the demo season, performing at the Lebanon Strawberry Festival on June 7. It was the first time we performed there, and we look forward to future invitations.

Regarding World Beat Fest, we will perform on Saturday only, June 27, from 1:30-2:15 PM on the European Stepping Stage. The changes in dates and times were determined by the number of performers seeking an opportunity to participate in the popular World Beat event.

Marion County Fair is just around the corner, so don’t miss the clogging and the music. Cherry City Cloggers will kick off the lineup of entertainers Friday night, July 10, from 5:15-6:00 p.m.

Now that our regular dance season has ended, we're looking forward to special dances, festivals, and other summertime events. Of special interest are three plus workshops/dances to be held at the Lebanon Senior Center. Bruce Lowther and Judy Russell will be calling and cueing on June 26, July 17, and August 7. Each dance will be on a Friday from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. in an air-conditioned hall for a $7.00 donation.

The dances are sponsored by the Alliance, which is several local clubs that support each other's various activities, and host plus dances monthly during the fall, winter, and spring. We're eager to have all plus dancers join us in polishing our skills.

IWW supported the youth at their festival on the first Saturday of May and then returned to our regular dance schedule on the second Saturday. Caller KC Curtis kept the energy high throughout the evening. The final tip featured a special surprise as KC Curtis and George Hermann each called a square simultaneously, providing plenty of laughter and entertainment.

On May 9, IWW held a business meeting. We discussed the transfer from one treasurer to another. Also got permission to talk to a local investment broker to see what it would take to move the account to local instead of doing business by email. Our caller submitted two flyers for consideration for the July 4 dance. The dancers present made a choice. Koast Krash future was deliberated by those who attended to determine what the future holds, i.e., location, timing, a chairperson, etc.

The club returns to its regular first and second Saturday dance schedule in June. A mystery group is expected to visit on June 13. On June 27, club members will travel to Boring to dance with the Country Cut-Ups.

July will feature two themed dances. On July 4, KC Curtis will call a George Strait-themed dance, and we also celebrate KC's birthday. On July 11, the club will host “A Square Dance with a Side of Blueberry Pie,” featuring an evening of dancing and blueberry desserts. Flyers for both events are in the OFN.

Mainstream lessons begin September 13 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m.

ReVuN'Q
This article was written before our 50th birthday dance was held, so more on that next month. 50 years is something to celebrate.

The Sunday phase 3-4 waltz class was a success with nine graduating and waiting for us to announce what we are teaching next Spring. We are open to suggestions. In the Fall, we will go back to phase 2 two-step, and we have three couples signed up for that class already. Let us know if you have some dancers ready to join the round dance world and want to learn with us on September 13 at 3:30 p.m.

Salem Swingin' Stars
Hello. Happy summer! We dance all year round. Our hall is air-conditioned, and we can also use fans to keep you comfortable.

May has come and gone with the Pacific Northwest Teen Festival in the books. Our very own Salem Super Novas won Grand Champions in the Junior division, which had nine squares competing. Aiden Skiens took second place in Junior Calling, and he and his partner from the Jacks and Jills won Champions in the Junior Round Dance division as well as the Compulsory. The Salem Swingin' Stars won the Exhibition Category with our Dance through the Decades routine. The youth all did an amazing job and are now looking forward to next year.

On June 19, the kids performed their Display squares with their Callers, and we danced the Exhibition Routine for your enjoyment. Their coach, Michael Kious, was also at this dance.

July 3 is our Patriotic Dance, so wear your Red, White and Blue. We will have some 250-year dangles for purchase. July 17 is our third Friday Dance, and July 31 is our fifth Friday Plus Dance.

Randy Dibble will hold Plus Lessons/Workshop on Wednesdays from 7:00-9:00 p.m. beginning on June 10. Lessons are scheduled to go until the first Wednesday in September.

See you on the dance floor.

May treated Willamette Squares with love! And so did our friends in Square Dancing. We had a terrific crowd for our Annual Brisket Dance on May 23, thanks to visitations from two clubs, not one but two, Salem Swinging Stars and Lebanon Square Circlers! We had plenty of food for everyone this time. It was a fun dance for the Memorial Day weekend.

We finished up our winter Mainstream lessons and held our graduation the first week of June. We're very proud of our students and look forward to dancing with them in the future.

Shalom,

Shari Schonbrun

Happy Hoppers - Link
The Happy Hoppers of Vancouver, WA, ended the month of May by enjoying the Tri-Council Dance. The Evergreen Council (Happy Hoppers, Columbia River Dancers, and R Square D), along with Portland Area Council (PAC) and Tualatin Valley Council (TVC), came together for a fantastic 5th Saturday night of dancing. Washington Grange #82 was filled with 129 round and square dancers enjoying caller Scott Zinser and cuer Susan Healea. It was a spectacular dance filled with fun, laughter and snacks. A huge thank you to all who attended!

Our club will be dark for the months of June, July, and August. Happy Hoppers feel this is a time to relax and share summer activities, along with resting and recharging for the fall dance and lesson times. We encourage our members to keep dancing through the summer whenever possible by enjoying visits to other clubs and joining in some festivals.

The Happy Hoppers will host a club picnic and meeting on Sunday, August 2, 2026. We will provide additional information as this date approaches. Remember, you can always see our website happy-hoppers.com and find us on Facebook as the Happy Hoppers Square Dance Club, Vancouver, WA.

Our club will be back in September for Monday night lessons along with first and third Saturday night dances with rounds. Plan on coming to join us and keep on sharing ... Square Dancing is the Best!

See you dancing, Denise and Roz Buddenberg

The May 25th TVC meeting, Executive Board only, was presided over by TVC President Sally Duyck. Assisted by Donna Swanson the Zoom meting was attended by six Board members. The agenda items included the 2027 budget, the 2027 meeting schedule, and the 2027 TVC dance schedule. The decision on whether or not to hold quarterly TVC meetings is on hold pending information from member clubs.

It was reported that the 2026-2027 TVC Directory is being compiled by Ferrous Steinka. Work is continuing on the TVC Directory with completion near the end of June or early July. The printing order will be submitted when finished and verified for a July delivery and distribution. I wish to thank all the club members who provided me with their information in a timely manner to achieve completion on schedule.

The next TVC 5th Saturday dance, 'Dancing In The Park', will be August 29th at Harleman Park, Cornelius featuring caller George Hermann and cuer Julie Stiers. An informal dance gathering begins with a potluck picnic from 3:30 to 4:30. We have the park reserved beginning at 3pm. Bring a dish to share and enjoy dancing beginning at 4:30 and continuing until 7:00pm.

The next TVC Meeting will be on June 22nd in person at the Aloha Grange. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m.

Columbia River Dancers - Link
The Columbia River Dancers will NOT be hosting dances during the months of July and August. We will, however, be holding Sunday evening workshops. We will be work shopping plus and a little bit more from 5 to 6 PM. From 6 to 7:30 we will solidify mainstream moves in order to make sure those newer dancers have full confidence when the fall dances begin. The workshops are open to all dancers. If your beginners need to refresh what they learned this year or you are wondering about the new classifications starting in September, this is the place for you. The only time we will not workshop is if the temperature figures to be 85 degrees or above.

Clubs work hard to recruit new dancers and get them to really enjoy square dancing. Then summer comes, people do other things and when fall arrives they have other interests taking their time. We have found that be continuing our workshops our students continue to stay in contact with our club and are less apt to lose interest in dancing. I am encouraging clubs to think about this and about having older club members bring the newer ones to a workshop.

Hope to see you in a square this summer.

Eager Beavers - Link
The Eager Beavers’ Plus lessons wrapped up on May 11th, and we were delighted to celebrate nine new graduates! Congratulations to all!

We’ve now returned to our regular Monday dance schedule from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. To help everyone continue learning and growing, we’re starting each dance with a 15-minute workshop. During this time, we’ll introduce A level calls that will transition into Plus this fall, while also polishing our Plus dancing skills. Everyone is welcome, the workshop flows right into the dance.

On May 4th, we kicked up our heels at our Fiesta Dance in celebration of Cinco de Mayo, and later in the month we honored Memorial Day with a special dance on May 25th. A heartfelt thank you goes to Daryl Clendenin for stepping in to call for us during the holiday event.

Looking ahead, we’ll be showing our patriotic spirit by wearing red, white, and blue for our Independence Day Dance on July 6th. Beginning July 13th, our popular Hawaiian-attire Mondays return! Hawaiian shirts and tropical styles are encouraged (but not required) on the second Monday of each month through September. We hope you’ll join us for a summer full of dancing, learning, and fun!

The Eager Beavers dance Plus every Monday at the air-conditioned Aloha Grange with Darrell Kalmbach calling, and Tami Helms or Lane Clem cueing Phase II and III Rounds on alternate Mondays. For current dancing information, please see our website at https://EagerBeavers.info. (see link above).

Hoedowners - Link
May was packed with fun, friendship, and plenty of dancing.

Our Mother's Day Dance on the 9th gave us a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the moms, grandmoms, and special mother figures in our lives. Michael Kious provided fabulous, joy-filled calling while Randy Lewis kept the rounds smooth and beautiful throughout the evening. Photos of "dear old mom" added a heartwarming touch, and the refreshment table was loaded with comfort-food favorites that were every bit as popular as the dance floor.

On the 23rd, the Denim Dance filled the hall with shades of blue and plenty of Hoedowner spirit. Michael once again kept the squares moving, while Randy mixed in lively Rumbas and Cha Chas. Thanks to everyone who dressed for the theme and contributed treats for the break table. The evening was a true success, proving that denim never goes out of style, especially when paired with good friends and great dancing.

July promises more summer fun.

The Beach Ball Bingo Dance on July 11th will bring sunshine, smiles, and beach-day energy to the hall. Michael Kious will be calling, with Connie Clark cueing. Be sure to wear your brightest summer colors and join us for an evening of bingo and dancing.

Then on July 25th, we'll saddle up for the Wild Wild West Dance. Michael Kious and Randy Lewis will lead a night of country charm, lively music, and western-themed fun. Dust off your boots, grab your partner, and join us for an evening that's sure to be a rootin'-tootin' good time.

We look forward to seeing everyone on the dance floor as the Hoedowners continue making memories one tip at a time.

Oak Hills Squares - Link
May was an exciting month for Oak Hills Squares, as we continue to have great turnout for all of our Monday night dances. Throughout the summer, the Club will dance from 6:30 to 8:30 for mainstream dancing with Mark Wheeler calling. Round Dancing, led by Lane Clem, will be available twice every month with dates TBA. Eight newly graduated dancers are a wonderful addition to our club and inspire us "old regulars" to step up our game. Twelve students graduated from Lane Clem's Round Dance lessons and are looking forward to using their new skills this summer. All are welcome to join our friendly group this summer, in our air conditioned space. Note that we will be "dark" on July 6th, August 31st, and September 7th.

The Recreation Center was especially lively on May 4th for our Cinco De Mayo dance with festive costumes and decorations. The following week the club held elections for club offices with the following results:

President - Hillary Barrett, Vice President - Dee Rice, Secretary - Linda Duffy, Treasurer - Marie Clem, TVC representative & Oregon State Federation Delegate - Marie Clem, and OFN Reporter - Lynne Fonner.

As of this writing, our Anniversary Dance will be held June 15th and I look forward to reporting on this festive event in the next newsletter. We look forward to hosting many of you from other clubs during the summer months. For more information, visit oakhillssquares.com.

R Square D had only one dance in May and it was our Disney Dance. We had great attendance and many different costumes/themed clothing were seen on the dance floor. Craig Abercrombie called and cued the dance. The music was great and the enthusiasm of Craig and the dancers was contagious! We were dark on May 23rd for Memorial Day weekend.

Many from R Square D attended the May 30th Tri-Council dance that was hosted by Evergreen Council and held at Washington Grange in Vancouver. We were there to support both councils that R Square D belongs to - Evergreen, and TVC. PAC was also well represented. Scott Zinser’s calling and Susan Healea’s cueing that night was fantastic and the floor was full (129 people in attendance)!

Now that we are in our summer schedule, the dances are called “Hot Wednesday Nite!” but our hall is air conditioned, so it is comfortable inside. We are also casual for all the summer dances. The July 8th dance will be called by Craig Abercrombie and cued by Susan Healea. Our July 22nd dance will be called by Craig and cued by Julie Stiers. Come and visit us!

May Club Activities:

• The club’s Mainstream Square Dance Lessons are over now with eight students graduating and five new members. The students and the Angels also learned the new moves that will become Mainstream moves in September. The Club gave the students and angels a graduation pizza party. The graduates have been attending our dances; they are dancing well and enjoying themselves.

July Club Activities:

• In July, the Club will have three Plus Dances: 2nd, 16th, and the 30th.

• Thursday July 2nd, our Club’s Plus Dance will be a celebration of July 4th Independence Day. So, wear your patriotic clothes if you like, we will have suitable music and dance. Speaking of clothes we are suggesting wearing casual all Summer. The club will be having ice cream sundaes at the break.

• Saturday July 4th is our nation’s Independence Holiday, and the Mainstream dance is dark (cancelled) so families can celebrate this important national holiday.

• July 18th dance will be the only Mainstream Dance this month. The Caller will be Darrell Kalmbach and Tami Helms as the Caller and Cuer.

• As usual, we dance from 7:00 - 9:30 PM in Hillsboro at the Odd Fellows Hall, 167 E. Main St. We have a great dance floor, air conditioning, and an excellent dining hall. There is street parking and also at the bank parking lot across the street. Besides having talented team calling and cueing we have great cooks for the break after the dance. Tri Squares - Link
June will wrap up another wonderful dance season for Tri Squares with two memorable dances filled with fun, friendship, and plenty of laughter. Our red, white, and blue themed dance will bring lots of patriotic spirit to the floor, and our final dance of the season is the perfect way to celebrate another great year together. Ice cream, toppings, smiles, and dancing made for a fantastic evening and a fun sendoff into summer.

We will also enjoy our annual mystery trip, which once again is a highlight of the season. At the time of this writing, the destination is still a closely guarded secret, but we know it will be filled with great company, adventure, and memorable moments.

As summer continues, we are already looking ahead to an exciting new season. In August, preparations will begin for our Mainstream Lessons, which officially start in September. We are always excited to welcome new dancers to the square dance community and introduce them to the fun, friendships, and activity that square dancing brings.

We will kick off the new season with our annual club picnic on August 23rd in Sherwood. The picnic is always a wonderful opportunity to reconnect after the summer break, enjoy good food, and spend time together before dancing resumes in the fall.

Just a reminder that Tri Squares will be dark during July and August. Even though our regular dances are on pause, we hope to see many of you dancing around Oregon and supporting other clubs throughout the summer months.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this past season such a success. We appreciate all of our dancers, visitors, volunteers, and friends who continue to make Tri Squares such a welcoming and fun community.

Have a safe and enjoyable summer, and we look forward to dancing with you again soon!

While Anthony Egan is on military deployment Wavesteppers have been helped out with other callers. Terry Halley has been doing two dances each month with help from Lane Clem and Roger Putzler. At 180 miles round trip we really appreciate Roger's willingness to call for us. At 140 miles round trip, it is no cake walk for Terry and Lane either.

We dance at the Tillamook Senior Center from 4-6pm on Tuesday each week at 316 Stillwell Avenue, Tillamook. Located on the corner of 4th and Stillwell there is no on site parking and little street parking. The huge Safeway parking lot is directly across the street. Our dances are held weekly on Tuesdays from 4:00 to 6:00 and we always have food and snacks.
