President's Corner
Do you ever find yourself concerned about what’s happening in your council, club, or the Oregon Federation of Square & Round Dancers? Do you think about ways things could be improved or how we can strengthen the future of square and round dancing — but aren’t quite sure how to get started?
The best way to make a difference is to get involved.
Whether at the club, council, or Federation level, there are many opportunities to share your ideas, talents, and energy. Your voice matters, and your participation helps shape the direction of our activity.
The Federation elections are coming up soon, and this is a great time to consider stepping forward — whether by running for an office or serving as a council delegate. It’s easier than you might think, and support is available every step of the way. Just reach out to your club president or an officer to learn more about how you can get involved.
Together, we can help ensure a strong and vibrant future for square and round dancing in Oregon.
Joyce Welton, Federation President
Editor's Note
As we go into the hottest period of the summer, be sure to check "Where & When" to make sure you don't get surprised by visiting a club that has gone dark.
Please join me in offering condolences to Bob Bosch on the sudden passing of his wife Carolyn on July 18. They have both been valuable members of the Oregon square dancing family for many decades.

We have concluded the transfer of officers and are ready for the new year to start in September. While we are currently on our summer hiatus, there are still many opportunities to stay active with our neighboring clubs through dances, picnics, and other activities.
Please note the following upcoming events:
- Plus workshop/dance on August 7 at the Lebanon Senior Center. Bruce and Judy will call and cue from 7:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. The cost is $7, snacks and air conditioning, of course. The Alliance of three regional clubs is hosting. We hope you will join us.
- Potluck Picnic: We will hold a club planning meeting and potluck picnic on August 23. Beginner lessons and our regular dance schedule are fast approaching. Keep tuned for details.

In June, we had our two regular dances. The Tri-Squares Square Dance Club visited us for our second Saturday dance (it was a mystery trip for them), and all shared a generous amount of camaraderie. There were four to five squares for plus tips and four or so for mainstream tips!
On July 4, we celebrated both our caller KC Curtis’s birthday and our nation’s 250th birthday. Red, white, and blue filled the dance floor as dancers enjoyed an evening of mainstream and Plus tips, with most tips featuring three squares. We also enjoyed a variety of classic American picnic fare.
We will hold our two regular dances in August and will start Mainstream lessons on September 13 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m.

Less than a month left until our Hot August Rounds dance event is happening. Two halls are available for different levels of choreographed ballroom dancing cued by members of ORDTA on Friday night and all day and evening of Saturday, August 21 and 22. We will have a Zoom meeting in mid-July to get last-minute details ironed out and jobs assigned.
There are plenty of hotel rooms around to stay in for the weekend. It is before football season starts in late August in Springfield. Check the OFN for the special dance flyer for more information. The Emerald Dance Center awaits your attendance.

We are dark until two-step lessons start on September 13 at 3:30 p.m. Stephanie Lozano and Marilyn Schmit are co-teaching, and we bring fun and giggles to the classes. Anyone interested in taking the class, let either of us know so we can put your names on the list. We look forward to seeing many dancers in the dance hall.

Salem Swingin' Stars
July started with a bang! The July 3 dance had six squares in red, white, and blue. Lebanon Square Circlers brought enough dancers to retrieve their Banner.
We sold special 250-year dangles in honor of America's 250th birthday. All proceeds will go to the youth for next year's competition. We had our second Annual Club BBQ on June 27. The rain did not dampen any of the fun. We ate great food, played games, sang to Neil Diamond (embarrassing the younger folks), and just came together around the fire pit for friendship. We are looking forward to next year. July 17 was another fun dance as well as the 5th Friday Plus Dance on July 31. We will also dance on August 7 and 21.
September brings two dances, one on September 4 and our Annual Corn & Cluck dance on September 18. Mainstream and a new round of Plus Lessons begin on September 9. Randy Dibble will teach the new Caller Lab lists of 50 calls.
Our youth will continue to raise funds to get them to Canada next year for the 75th Pacific Northwest Teen Square Dance Festival. We appreciate all of the support.
See you on the dance floor.

Hello Friends!
Cut-ups had another busy month. On June 25, we had a Community Dance for prospective dancers who were interested in learning about square dancing, followed by our regular dance. We had 4 squares. We will be hosting another Community Dance on August 22 from 6 pm to 7 pm at the Boring Barn. Our regular dance will follow from 7-10 pm.
We had our last Bingo night for the season on June 24. We will begin Bingo again in September.
We danced on July 4 to the calling and cueing of Craig Abercrombie.
Upcoming dates to remember are July 25 with Scott Zinser calling and Julie Stiers cueing; August 1 with George Hermann calling and Julia Buchheit cueing; and August 22 with Scott Zinser calling and Julie Stiers cueing. We dance from 7-10 pm. If it's hot, we will be dancing on our outdoor dance floor! We hope to see you in a square soon!

The Happy Hoppers of Vancouver, WA, have been dark in June and July and will continue to be dark through August 2026. We encourage our members and guests to enjoy summer activities and spend time with family and friends.
Our club has participated in many dances and festivals in the area. Lots of people continue to dance over these summer months, and it's fun to hear about their experiences.
The Happy Hoppers will host a club picnic and meeting for members on Sunday, August 2, 2026. Members should save the date and watch for additional information through our "Happy Hopper Hello.” We want to have everything in place for September, with our Monday night lessons and our first and third Saturday night Square Dances with Rounds. Watch for details in the OFN!
Our club has a website (happy-hoppers.com) and Facebook page (Happy Hoppers Square Dance Club, Vancouver, WA). These are great sources for information about the club. We also post on Evergreen Council Square Dancers. We are eager to get the word out ... Square Dancing is spectacular and you'll never regret learning how to dance!

Thanks to all the dancers in red, white, and blue who joined River City Dancers for our 36th Anniversary Dance on June 27, where we also celebrated the 250th Anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. There were three squares on the floor, and everyone enjoyed cake and ice cream afterward.
Our second Saturday dance in July featured Dancing in Paradise with watermelon and other goodies after the dance. We had four squares on the floor, and everyone had a great time. Thanks to all of you who were here!
In August our second Saturday dance will be called by Darrell Kalmbach and cued by Tami Helms. Join us for summer dancing in our air-conditioned hall.
We will have our annual club picnic and general meeting in August.
On August 22, our regular fourth Saturday dance will be a Celebration of Life for Betsy Dutton. Betsy lost her battle with cancer, but she was always very available to help the club and, for the last two years, she led our Mainstream lessons. She will be missed greatly. Watch the August OFN for the flyer about this event.

We are looking forward to fun and good food at our BBQ Picnic dance on July 18th. We will be dark from July 22nd through September 9th. Our new Beginner class starts on September 10th with the Plus class starting on September 15th.
The Charlie Browns were sad to hear of Mike Sikorsky's passing. He was to call our 59th birthday dance on December 5th.
Fortunately, we were able to get Lawrence Johnstone from California. We are delighted that he was available at this late date as many others were not! Please join us and welcome Lawrence back to Oregon!

The June 22nd TVC meeting was held at the Aloha Grange, presided over by TVC President Sally Duyck, and attended by twenty one members. The agenda items included the 2027 meeting schedule, and the 2027 TVC dance schedule. The results from polling the TVC clubs on whether or not to go to quarterly meetings was unanimous yes for those reporting. A motion was made to go to a quarterly schedule beginning after the next TVC meeting. The motion was passed after amending to allow special meetings to be called by the TVC Board. The results of this vote will require amending the TVC operating documents.
It was reported that the 2026-2027 TVC Directory has been completed and an order for publication issued. They should arrive in time to be distributed at the next TVC meeting which will occur on Monday, July 27, 2026, at the Aloha Grange. This will be the last of our monthly meetings.
State Delegate Marie Clem reported on plans for the 2027 Mid Winter and Summer Festivals. It was announced that Marilyn Schmit is accepting names for anyone wanting to dance at the September State Fair until the end of August.
The next TVC 5th Saturday dance, 'Dancing In The Park', will be August 29th at Harleman Park, Cornelius featuring caller George Hermann and cuer Julie Stiers. An informal dance gathering begins with a potluck picnic from 3:30 to 4:30; please bring a dish to share. We have the park reserved beginning at 3pm. Dancing begins at 4:30 and continues until 7:00pm.
There are no club anniversary dances in August but we have two coming up in September. Stay tuned.

Our mainstream workshop, from 6 to 7:30 is to ingrain calls and work through any that seem to need help. The work shops are open to all. The only reason to not have the workshops is if the temperature is over 85 degrees.

June turned out to be a bit challenging for the Eager Beavers, as a heat wave forced us to cancel of one of our dances. Even though the Aloha Grange has air-conditioning, it simply couldn't keep up with multiple previous days of extremely high temperatures. Fortunately, June had five Mondays so we were still able to enjoy four dances together. We have been averaging four to five squares!
Our traditional Hawaiian themed second Monday was a bright spot, with many dancers showing up in colorful island attire. Hawaiian Day is a favorite summer tradition and continues each month from June through September. The club enjoyed a 5th Monday dine-out on the 28th of June.
We have more fun ahead! In August, we'll gather for our annual club picnic featuring good food, games, and fellowship. Then, on August 31st, we'll cap off the month with another 5th Monday dine-out following the dance.
The Eager Beavers dance Plus every Monday at the air-conditioned Aloha Grange with Darrell Kalmbach calling, and Tami Helms or Lane Clem cueing Phase II and III Rounds on alternate Mondays. For current dancing information, please see our website at https://EagerBeavers.info. (see link above).

June was filled with celebration, community, and plenty of Hoedowner spirit.
Our Star‑Spangled Banner Dance on June 13th lit up the hall like fireworks. The evening was a joyful tribute to the red, white, and blue, thanks to the many hands that made it shine. During the break dancers were delighted with red‑white‑and‑blue berries and ice cream, summer in a bowl and the decorations really shown as the hall was decked with patriotic decorations worthy of a parade. Michael’s calling carried the pride of the evening, and Randy’s smooth cueing kept the rounds flowing beautifully. It was a night that honored the banner we all love and the community that gathers beneath it.
On June 26th, we celebrated Father’s Day with an evening full of warmth, laughter, and lively dancing. Michael brought fabulous calling, and his wonderful family. His two year old son Aiden charmed everyone, and his wife Camille added her own sparkle to the night. Randy kept the rounds moving with style, even slipping in a fun Phase 3 now and then. Festive decorations and fabulous hot‑dogs with all the fixings were served at the break. The evening was a heartfelt celebration of fathers, family, and friendship.
On August 8th, we’ll kick off the month with our Knobby Knees & Popsicles Dance, a lighthearted, laugh‑filled summer tradition. Break out your shorts or knee‑length skirts, draw cheerful or silly faces on your knees, and get ready to show off those knobby masterpieces! Popsicles will keep things cool, while Michael Kious and Randy Lewis bring the music and energy to keep the squares moving.
Then on August 22nd, we’ll escape to the islands with our Hawaiian Luau Dance. Think bright colors, tropical flair, and a hall full of aloha spirit. Whether you come in a floral shirt, a grass skirt, or simply ready to dance, you’ll be greeted with warm smiles and lively music. Michael will be calling and Randy cueing for a night that promises sunshine, swaying rhythms, and summertime joy, no plane ticket required.
We look forward to seeing everyone on the dance floor as the Hoedowners continue making memories one tip at a time.

Oak Hills Squares had a busy June with excellent participation from our members and guests from several area clubs. As part of our summer guest caller series (see attached flyer), we were pleased to welcome Terry Halley on June 8th and Renee Ruud on June 22nd.
Due to extreme heat, our Anniversary Dance originally scheduled for June 15th was postponed to June 29th. The rescheduled celebration was well-attended and featured festive decorations, prizes, refreshments, and an anniversary cake. We thank Mark Wheeler and Lane Clem for providing the calling and cueing for such a memorable evening, and we appreciate everyone who joined us to celebrate our club.
Our August themed dance, "Sun, Sand, & Sea," will take place with dancers encouraged to wear summertime beach attire (no bikinis, please). Our guest caller series continues on August 10th with Thomas Buchheit calling and Lane Clem cueing. On August 24th, we will host our "End of Summer Picnic and Dance."
Following this active summer schedule, the club will be dark on August 31st and September 7th. We are currently discussing the possibility of starting lessons on September 21st (TBD). For more information, visit oakhillssquares.com.

R Square D’s summer schedule is going well. June 10th was our annual “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” dance with Craig Abercrombie calling and Rochelle Catt cueing. It was well attended and a fun night overall. Our “Hot Wednesday Nite” dance on June 24th was called by Lane Johnston and cued by Julie Stiers. We had six squares dancing throughout the evening and all had a good time.
“Hot Wednesday Nite” dances will continue in August and they are casual. Craig Abercrombie is calling on August 12th and Susan Healea is cueing. On August 26th Craig will call and Julie Stiers will cue. We plan to serve root beer floats that night, so come dance with us and enjoy ice cream, too!

June Club Activities:
• Seaside Sashay program is moving along well; Hunter Keller will be the featured caller.
• We had a successful Mainstream Class of students this year with eight graduates and five new club members. We welcome them all to square dancing and as new friends.
• We also appreciate the angels that came to the lessons to help the students in their learning process and sharpened the angels’ skills especially on the changed calls that will be effective in September via Callers Lab changes.
• Our Council, the TVC, is changing from monthly meetings to quarterly meetings, a lot of details will have to be changed regarding all this including rewriting their By-Laws.
• Sunset Promenaders had a visitation to the Oak Hills Anniversary dance on June 29th.
August Club Activities:
• In August, the club’s Mainstream dances are on the 1st, and 15th with the Plus dances on the 6th and 20th.
• The theme for the Mainstream dance on the 15th is “Northwest Tee-Shirts”. So if you wish, wear a shirt about your favorite sports team or favorite place. Of course this is all optional.
• On Sunday August 23rd, the Club will have our annual picnic.
• On August 29th, the TVC is having a dance at Harleman Park in Cornelius, and the club is planning to go. The time will be in the afternoon. There is to be a committee to work out the details.
• As normal, we dance from 7:00 - 9:30 PM. Plus Dance on 1st and 3rd Thursday, and Mainstream on the 1st and 3rd Saturday in Hillsboro at the Odd Fellows Hall located at 167 E. Main St. We have a great dance floor, air conditioning, and an excellent dining hall. There is street parking and at the bank parking lot across the street. Besides having talented team calling and cueing, we have great cooks who furnish refreshments after the dance. What else do you need, please come and enjoy a visit with us.

On June 13th we went on a Mystery Trip with 23 people signed up. Two minibuses were used with the first stop at the Oregon Garden in Silverton Oregon. Most of the group went on a guided tram tour that took us throughout the different gardens. Afterwards we danced two squares in a shaded area. We then drove to a restaurant called The Home Place Restaurant also located in Silverton. Our group ended up at the Salem Square Dance Center dancing with the Independence Wagon Wheelers Square Dance Club.
Tri Squares wrapped up our dance season with our final dance on June 26th. The evening combined great dancing with a delicious ice cream social featuring plenty of toppings. Everyone got creative with their ice cream concoctions, making for lots of fun and laughter. It was a wonderful way to celebrate another successful season before taking our summer break.
Although we're "dark" for the summer, we have two fun visitations planned in July. On July 11th, we'll visit the Hoedowners at the Aloha Grange to enjoy the calling of Michael Kious and the cuing of Connie Clark. Then, on July 25th, we'll head to the Country Cut-Ups in Boring to dance to Scott Zinser's calling and enjoy round dancing with Julie Stiers.
On August 23rd, we'll gather for our annual picnic at Snyder Park in Sherwood. This event serves as both the wrap-up of the past year and the kickoff to the new one. As always, there will be plenty of good food, great conversation, and an opportunity to sign up for volunteer roles for the 2026-27 dance season. We'll also focus on ways to welcome new dancers and spread the word about our Fall Mainstream square dance lessons and 2-Step round dance classes, which begin on September 13th.
As always, I hope to see you on the dance floor!
