Oregon Federation News
January 2017

A publication of the Oregon Federation of Square and Round Dance Clubs

Printed 20 January 2017
President's Corner

Happy New Year to everyone who reads this. Even though this will get printed before the end of December, it will fit just as well. I hope that you have fond memories of 2016 and have plans to equal or better 2017.

The new dancer classes are continuing and some coming to a close near Mid-Winter so be prepared to assist the new dancers when they come to your club to dance. They will be unsure of themselves, but make them feel welcome to your club and into a square. The more they feel comfortable, the more they will dance and become the dancers that all the instructors aimed for when classes began.

We will all soon begin to look in our closets to figure out what we are wearing to Mid-Winter, when we are leaving our homes to drive to Albany, and how many friends we will see for the first time since last Mid-Winter. Have you confirmed your lodging yet?  We did about a week ago and it is a good thing we did. Our reservation did not stick from last year when we left our hotel, so we would not have had a room if I did not check on it recently.

Soon it will be time for clubs to vote for officers for the next dance year. Consider putting your name on the club ballot and be an involved member of your club. Your ideas do count and they should be heard. We will be putting together a slate of officer nominees during Mid-Winter. We would love to have some of you run for Federation office also. Look in your state directory to see who is on the nomination committee and contact them to let them know you are interested.

Until the end of the month, see you in Albany for a good weekend of friends, fun and good food somewhere in town. Get your feet ready to dance the weekend away.

Bring your money with you and register for Summer Festival while you are in Albany. They need your support as well.

Marilyn Schmit
President

Editor's Note

We have several long pieces about Mid-Winter Festival this month, coming up quickly at the end of January.  There are also advertisements from the River City Riders for benefit dances to help them show their stuff around the country.  Be sure to take a look.

If you tried something different with your classes this year, why not write me a short note about it for publication next month?  We can best serve the community by sharing the things that worked, and even the things that didn't.

In the spirit of the season, Redrocks Squares thought it would be fun and a good way to give back to the community if they collected waterproof gloves, socks and/or boots to donate to FAN - Family Access Network. They serve low income families with kids in the Redmond School District. The club will collect items at both of the December Redrock Squares dances.

Debbie Klug has decorateda cardboard box to collect the items in, she will then deliver the donations when they are done collecting.

Please join us to bring in the new year! December 31st this year! 8:30 p.m. - Pre-Rounds with Christina Corelli and 9:00 p.m. - Squares with Roger Putzler. We will celebrate hourly for New York City, Chicago (where Roger was born and grew up), Ontario, Oregon, and finally Eugene/Springfield. Wow, what a night it's going to be. We have also decided to charge $2.50 per person as this was the price for dances back in the 80's. Please bring a pie. We have not decided on a dress code so anything goes!

It's also the hall's 25th anniversary. Back in 1991 we acquired the hall in Springfield from Kenny McKay who took off 25 grand from the asking price because of what we were going to do at the hall. He allowed us to use the hall for one year before we bought it. Those were generous offers on his part which we appreciated. He knew a good thing when he saw it.

The next scheduled CCCA dance isn't until April 29th. We have meetings and dances on the fifth Saturdays.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from CCCA

Our December holiday dinner and square dance party with Jim Hattrick calling and Jackie Gale cueing was fun. We had mostly club dancers with a few guests. The hall looked great with all the Christmas trees, table decorations, hanging garlands, and our decked out fireplace. And, the food was delicious. Thanks to all the cooks who donated such yummy food.

January 13th will bring our Snowfest dance, held at the B51 level for all the dancers to enjoy. In our joint clubs dance lessons we are getting learners to be comfortable at the B51 level and adding the rest of the mainstream moves following regular lessons as they are ready to move on. So, we have a good number of dancers at the B51 level. We know that Jim Hattrick will do us proud getting our new dancers to have a good time at that level of dancing. So bring your new dancers and join us for a fun time.

We are dark Christmas Day, BUT we are going to dance January 1st at 5:30 p.m. That's a Sunday. So, please join us at the hall in Springfield for great dancing on the first day of the new year, 2017! Tim Matteson calls and teaches all levels. We are right now in the midst of advanced lessons. Tim calls whatever level we are dancing. He's good, and we are so blessed to have him as our caller and teacher. He's happy he lives about 6 six minutes from the hall. It's also nice to have storage space and built in speakers too.

Kirby Goode is home on hospice which sounds ominous, but the hospice doctor told him to gain weight which may take him off hospice. That sounds positive to us. Kirby has COPD issues among other things. He's on oxygen which is helping his hair grow, making his cheeks nice and red and giving him a stronger voice. You can't say enough about good ol' oxygen for which we take for granted.

We are getting more dancers coming out on Sundays at 5:30 p.m. Please join us! We've heard dancers say we are a FUN group! True!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from Spin Cycle Squares!

As we look forward to the New Year we have some great memories of 2016. The Whirl-A-Ways had a busy holiday season visiting the Sweet Home Squarenaders in November for their annual turkey dance. It was great to have Jim Hattrick on the stage.

The local clubs are hosting a combined beginners class again this year and we are trying something new with the B51 program. So, with the completing of the first 10 weeks we hosted a new dancer dance right after Thanksgiving. These dances provide our new dancers an opportunity to experience a new caller and meet more of those who have been dancing for awhile.

We only had one dance in December to allow the club members an opportunity to enjoy Christmas Eve with their families. On the other side everyone was encouraged to visit with the other clubs dancing at the Emerald Dance Center.

We also only have one dance in January on the 14th and our mid-year business meeting. It is that time of year when we begin the search for new club officers. Of course we will be dark on the 28th for Mid-Winter Festival. We hope to see you all there.

December 3rd we had our Holiday Dance. Great fun and lots of special holiday related door prizes. Sandy Harris called and cued as Christina was home with a sick Kirby. We wish him well. Larry also called a tip for us. Don’t forget Tuesday nights are lesson nights at the Emerald Square Dance Center and a B51 dance Wednesday, December 14th. Our next club dance is January 7th. Hoping you can join us for the fun.

Wow! What a fun dance Dan Nordbye called for us on November 19! We had five squares on the floor and 12 different clubs in attendance. We also raised over $200 for Homeward Bound, McMinnville's No-kill Animal Shelter. What a wonderful kick-off to the holidays.

Starting with our December Christmas dance, we'll be on a new dance schedule: Plus workshop 7-7:15 pm. Pre-rounds 7:15-7:30 pm. Mainstream squares 7:30-9:30 pm. Food and fellowship 9:30-10 pm.

We also want to share some sad news. We lost a beloved former member to cancer shortly before Thanksgiving. Gloria Borges and her husband Lee were very active in our club, the MWA, and around the state until she became sick. She is greatly missed.

See you soon, we hope. Carmen

Happy New Year everyone! Our mainstream lessons continue this month, with Bruce Lowther instructing. We've attended some of the New Dancers' Dances with our students and it's been a fun and festive time.

Our club is hosting a New Dancers' Dance on January 14 and we look forward to it. Coming up in March is our annual Coast Trip, March 10 and 11, when we'll be dancing both nights at Gleneden Beach Community Club. All are welcome to join us! Karen

Independence Wagon Wheelers - Link
Independence Wagon Wheeler’s history was made at our December 3 dance when Bill Francis Jr. asked Jamie Reinerkson to marry him, half way through a tip. Club members gave Jamie a veil made from a lace curtain and a bouquet from dried Hydrangeas. Bill was given a necktie to complete the newly engaged couples outfit. It took George Hermann quite some time to get control of the dance after the proposal as everyone wanted to congratulate the happy couple. The club members felt so privileged to be included in this happy event. Happy Dancing. Linda Neuschwander

It is certainly a busy time of year and that is true for our club. Our first dance in November was a "Sports Night" dance with various ways of expressing our favorite teams. Charlotte Jeskey called and Jackie Gale cued.

On the second Saturday night of November, many of our club members attended the Turkey Dinner Dance in Sweet Home.  Wonderful dinner and great dancing!  Jim Hattrick called and Jackie Gale cued.

Then on November 19, the club journeyed to the Braids and Braves dance featuring Dan Nordbye, a national caller.  We had over two squares in attendance and earned a banner.  It was a most enjoyable and fun evening.

Our members enjoyed Thanksgiving with their families and on the Saturday morning following the holiday, our club put its display of lights in Ralston Park in Lebanon. This is a community activity with many lighted displays throughout the park for the holidays.   There was also a Christmas parade with the 5A Football State Champions as Grand Marshall. And the rain even stopped for a short time that evening.

On November 29 - National Square Dance Day - 18 of our club members did a demonstration dance at the new Veterans Home in Lebanon. It brought back good memories for these residents.

Our first dance of December was a Toy Dance and Ugly Sweater Dance with Charlotte Jeskey calling and Jackie Gale cueing. Representatives from our local Fire Department came to pick up the donated toys and experienced some dancing.

On January 15, the Lebanon Square Circlers will celebrate 68 years of dancing.   Charlotte Jeskey will be calling with guest caller, Jim Voll, and Jackie Gale will be cueing. Strawberry shortcake will be served. We hope to see many of our dancer friends there. See you in a square! Marilyn York

We are back dancing after having two different Thursdays off in November due to instructor illness and Thanksgiving. We also take two Thursdays off in December (Dec. 22 & 29) but will then dance on New Year’s Eve.

We are working on perfecting our steps for the Showcase of Rounds for Mid-Winter, and making preparations for New Year’s Eve. I think we are the only round dance in the area, so we are looking forward to a good crowd to enjoy a relaxing night of dancing and camaraderie. We will have three cuers in attendance for the evening. In addition to our Cheryl, Ken Pratt and David Vomocil will give us part of their evening also.

January will see us finishing up some Foxtrot workshops and any leftover Tango steps needed. Future rhythms haven’t been decided yet. Come and join us for some laid back dancing and just plain fun. Marilyn Schmit

We had a great attendance for our October Ham Dinner/Storybook Dance. Everyone enjoyed the dinner very much and then we were able to dance off all we ate. We did have prizes for those who dressed up as a favorite story/nursery rhyme character - our three winners were: Paulette Stahlnecker as Gretel; Jasmine Mauro as the cow who jumped over the moon and Thomas Buchheit as Robin Hood.

We are still selling teen festival pins but we are currently out and mom is having difficulty in connecting with the person who is supposed to be getting more pins to us. Please keep checking with us!

Our December dance was our New Dancer's Dance and Baked Potato Dinner. We also had our experienced clothing at 1/2 price. I will report more on this dance next time.

Willamette Squares held its annual Thanksgiving dinner dance and there was more than enough food for the traditional Thanksgiving dinner. And the pie was exceptional! The meal was served, everyone danced, then took a break for pie, and then danced some more. Special thanks to Nancy and Brice Baker who organized the dinner and did so much of the leg work. Of course, everyone pitched in which made everything go smoother. Thanks to everyone for the part you played in putting this on.

Our club missed our president, John Templin, who was in the hospital when he would rather have been on the dance floor. We wish him an eventual full recovery. Thanks to Gary Ohren who filled in for him at the dance. Not only was John's presence missed when it came to dancing but also when it came time to divide up the leftovers!

Just a reminder that Willamette Squares is going dark on the fourth Saturday of December which is the 24th, but not all is lost because on January 8, 2017 at 1:30 will be our New Dancer dance. Then the fourth Saturday of January 2017, January 28, Willamette Squares will be dark because of Mid-Winter. We hope to see you all at our new dancer dance in the new year. May 2017 bring peace, hope, and a whole lot of dancing! Jodee Howard

The PAC trailers are now stored at an undisclosed location and ready to rent or loan out this spring and summer. The PAC will not attempt to run them in the Starlite Parade, opting instead for more neighborhood events

While we’re on the subject of neighborhood events, the PAC is closely watching the results of clubs that are having open neighborhood dances, such as Valley Squares and Country Cut-Ups. Our thinking is that it will give us better advertising at mostly no cost.

We are noting that one of the detriments to future new callers and cuers is no place to call or cue. This is intensified by clubs who hire “regular” callers and cuers, shutting out any new caller or cuer up for hire.

We had a great visitation (Nov 19) to the Country Cut-Ups and retrieved our banner.

We also (most especially) thank our faithful and regular visitors from the Country Cut-Ups and the Chips and Petticoats for all their faithful support they gave last year.

After toying with the matter for several months, we are increasing our door donation (for out of area callers) to $7. Well, let’s face it, our dwindling numbers mean we have to ask more per person to meet expenses. Yes, our faithful bookkeeper, Debbie Debit assures us this is necessary.

We are preparing for our basket raffle (Dec 14). It not only brings a few dollars to our club, but promotes good will. We make the baskets as alluring as we can, so even the guys will want to buy them.

And of course, we ladies also look alluring as possible, getting all the solo guys to come dane with us. (Nov 30, we again had more guys than gals at our dance.) Come check us out..

Happy New Year from the Buzzing Bees. Our club is doing well with lessons and they should be ready to graduate in early February. We plan to bring the class to midwinter in January.

We had a great turnout at our giving thanks dance and November and took six big bags of donated gifts to each of two assisted living facilities that have a high percentage of low-income seniors. I want to give a big thanks to all who donated. The activity directors were overwhelmed with the amount of donation I brought them.

We are sad to say that Debbie Combs is retiring and her last dance will be on January 21st which is also our beginners Jamboree and pajama Dance. Come to celebrate her retirement and wear your PJs. We wish you a happy and healthy New Years.

Country Cut-Ups - Link
January brings a big change for the Country Cut-Ups. We are trying out a new dance schedule for this year. We are moving from 1st, 3rd, and 5th Saturdays to 1st, 4th, and 5th Saturdays. There are some other clubs with the 1st and 3rd schedule that we never get to dance with, so we are hoping to visit them and to have them check us out. However, the first time we try for a 4th Saturday, it is the weekend of Mid-Winter Festival, and we are not going to try and compete! Many of our Cut-Ups attend this, so we will be dark. Plan to see you in Albany!

We have a great mainstream class going with Scott Zinser guiding them through the calls. They will finish up soon and we are planning to start another mainstream class right away. That will give these students a chance to jump back in as angels and solidify their dancing skills. Seeing the new students who know nothing yet, should build their confidence! Some of our current students are already signing up to become Cut-Ups, so we are hoping to build up our club membership roster.

We are planning a Mystery Trip with a bus ride and are opening it up to non-members once the members have all had a chance to sign up. If you are interested, talk to Robert or Young Lumsden for details. We are planning some other special events in 2017, so stay tuned!

Happy Hoppers - Link
This Happy Hoppers report is for January, but if you happen to see it before the end of December, it's not too late to attend our New Year's Eve dance. This year, the theme is "A Winter Wonderland". The event will commence at 7:30 with a buffet dinner at the Clark County Square Dance Center. Dancing will start at 8:30. Calling and cueing will be by the "Front Porch Trio" featuring the beautiful harmonies of Jim Hattrick, Craig Abercrombie, and Adam Christman. In the past, when I've danced where multiple callers collaborated on the singing, it was usually only a single person at a time who made the calls. These guys actually sing the dance calls concurrently, all 3 of them, in harmony! Their ability to do this represents an exceptional level of experience and communication.

Adam Christman lives in Spokane, so when he comes to town for a "Front Porch Trio" event, they try to leverage on his availability. With that in mind, they have scheduled a "Beginner Jamboree" dance on Friday, December 30th at the Hazel Dell Grange. Plus dancing is from 7:00 to 8:00 followed by B-51 calls for the rest of the evening. It's always fun for our students to get some quality floor time, so we hope you can join us at this dance.

This year we had a very successful Christmas Toys collection. We donated the toys to The Children's Center, a community-based mental health service. These folks do a wonderful job and they are very appreciative of our efforts to help brighten up the Christmas season.

Periodically, the FISH food bank in Vancouver requests help for sorting donated food into categories. We are scheduled to work there on December 15, from 9:00 to 12:00. It is a great way for our club members to give back to the community.

Our teacher, Jim Hattrick, is well known as a premier educator. Square dance lessons for new beginners will start on Monday, January 2nd at the Clark County Square Dance Center. We work hard to make our education program a comfortable environment for students. Many of our club members volunteer as "Angels" to help make it an easy and productive experience. Every Monday, Plus lessons will be given at 6:30, Basic lessons start at 7:30, and Mainstream lessons are available at 9:00. We are committed to serving both beginners and continuing students with our lesson format.

We will have our regular Plus dances on the first and third Saturdays of the month at the Clark County Square Dance Center, with our club caller/cuer, Jim Hattrick. For January, it's the 7th and the 21st. Pre-rounds start at 7:30, with squares at 8:00.

Rosetown Ramblers - Link
The Ramblers closed out the 2016 dance year with our usual verve, raising the roof on the Milwaukie Grange with Anne Uebelacker calling on December 3. We welcomed visitors from Chaps and Petticoats, Spin Cycle Squares, Tualatin Timber Squares, and BnBs. Thanks for everyone’s support of our club in 2016.

We finished our Fall series of lessons on December 14, with 8 students completing the Mainstream program.

We will not be offering a new series of lessons in January 2017. Instead, starting January 4, 2017, we will be offering Mastering Mainstream and Practicing Plus (M2P2). The goals of M2P2 are to help our recent graduates become impeccable Mainstream dancers—with lots of Dance by Definition work—and to reward our dedicated angels by offering at least a few Plus tips each night. Our caller will be Ian Craig, who will workshop calls that seem to be causing dancers trouble. All dancers who are familiar with the Mainstream calls, and would like to be challenged to become better dancers, are welcome. Solo dancers and those wishing to try all-position dancing are especially welcome; we will find you a dance partner. The cost will be $3 per person, and we will be dancing at the Ankeny Street Studio on Wednesdays from 7-9 pm. The studio is located at 975 SE Sandy Blvd., Portland (entrance on SE Ankeny Street).

Our monthly dance for January will be on January 14 at the Milwaukie Grange. Steven Cole will be calling. We will be alternating Mainstream and Plus tips from 7:30 to 9:30 pm. This will be our annual Black and White Ball, so dancers are encouraged to wear some combination of black and white; it doesn’t have to be formal. You could wear white jeans, a black shirt, and black shoes. Or a black and white striped shirt. Or black jeans and white tennis shoes. It’s fun to see the different combinations that dancers come up with. Human ingenuity is a remarkable thing!

You may be reading this in late December so I will remind you of our New Year’s Eve dance on December 31st, held at the IOOF Hall in Hillsboro. The caller and cuer for the evening will be Daryl and Yvonne Clendenin. There is a new format this year. The dance begins at 9:00 PM and goes until 12:15 AM. There will be an open break where desserts and coffee will be available. At midnight there will be a pause in the dancing to usher in the New Year.

Our annual TVC Presidents Meeting & Potluck for current and past club Presidents will be held at the IOOF Hall, 267 East Main Street, Hillsboro, OR 97123 on January 23rd with the potluck dinner starting at 6:00 and meeting at 7:00. All TVC club Presidents & dancers are invited to join us. The TVC wishes to thank all the presidents of the TVC Clubs for volunteering their time and efforts into this activity we all love. This reporter ate way too much turkey on the 24th and had a great time working it off at our "First Annual Turkey Burn-off". We were lucky enough to snag both national caller Dan Nordbye and wonderful Julie Stiers calling rounds. What a great way to finish off the month of November. Ten squares filled the grange. A wonderful time was had by all of the dancers.

We began a new class the first Tuesday on December and our caller Jim Hattrick is working them hard in order to get them ready for his Beginners Dance on Friday, December 30. So, all of you who have been enjoying the beginning level of dance or those of you who want to really polish up your skills, the Hazel Dell Grange, just a few blocks off of exit 5 on I-5, is the place to be on the 30th. Our November and December classes are looking forward to dancing with new people in a square. I heard the Back Porch Trio will be there.

Our second dance in December was scheduled for Christmas Eve. We would rather have you home with family and thinking of the Real Reason for the Season so while the hall will be dark, some children will have visions of sugar plums dancing in their heads.

Craig Abercrombie will be kicking off the 2017 on the 14th of January. We will be dancing Plus from 7-8 and mainstream from 8-10 or so. We would love to have you come. Our club works hard to make sure any singles who come to our dance will have a partner.

Most of the Columbia River Dancers will be traveling to the Oregon Mid-Winter Dance so have decided to meet new and old friends there and there will Not be a 4th Saturday dance at the Grange on the 29th.

Lastly, is there any interest in a teen group in the greater Portland/Vancouver area? We have teens who come to lessons and do very well, but who would like to dance with there age group. We see them learn and then have a tendency to drift away. Driving from the north part of Clark County to almost Wilsonville is too much for many parents. Our club is willing to help get something going if there is interest elsewhere. My email address is nickandjan@comcast.net.

If my pretty little Taw is lucky enough to get a new hip soon we may see you in Albany in a square.

Ring out the old; ring in the new. 2016 seemed to over before it began. Hope all of you had a year of good dancing and fun with family and friends. Go ahead; make those resolutions and if you can keep 80% of them; congratulate yourself.

I hope one of those resolutions is brushing up on or learning to dance Plus because we are offering lessons starting February 13th. See more details under OFN lessons, our website or call Karen 503-649-9487 or Sally 503-645-2414. Lessons are only a $4.00 donation. All three of our callers will be teaching so you will receive excellent instruction learning not only how to respond to the calls but that callers have their own style of calling. Classes are on Monday, 12:00 to 1:15 PM.

We were lucky and pleased to have Dave and Patty Cooper visit our club on November 28th and cue for free. Dave has been very active at the state level and they are now being ambassadors visiting clubs around the state. Thank you Dave and Patty.

NOTICE: We are dark on the day after Christmas, December 26th, everyone enjoy the day with your family. Also, the Church will NOT be available on January 2nd so we will dance at the Aloha Grange, 185th and TV Highway.

We dance on most holidays. Even if you have a job, you can join us once in a while. Our three callers keep us on our toes as each week one seems to have some new twist to keep our minds sharp. All plus dancers are invited to dance with us on Monday afternoons, 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., at the Sunset Presbyterian Church, 14986 NW Cornell Road in Beaverton.

Please check for up to date information at www.eagerbeavers.info or OFN website: http://ofn.club.

Hoedowners - Link
November is such a food centric month for the Hoedowners. We began the month with our Turkey Toss dance on the 12th. Let’s see, bean filled bags sliding into the corn holes to win a turkey. Sounds like the beginning of a great meal. Eleven turkeys were won by the talented participants while the others left just a wee bit disappointed. The dancing is never a disappointment.

Hey foodies, a spectacular Italian Bistro was open on the evening of Wednesday, November 16th as we held our Annual Spaghetti Dinner. Nothing wafts like the smell of garlic, on bread or in sauce; fresh pasta, fresh salad and a decadent desert. What a great evening with 60 dining and visiting across the dinner table; new dancers and club members alike.

What do we do but have a Soup Dance on Saturday, November 26th. With a good variety of yummy soups to pick from, it hit the spot on a chilly fall night.

Our new dancers are busy square dancing. That’s right; we’re past the novice stage and looking forward to seeing them across the square on Saturday nights. These folks are fast learners!

In January we’ll be holding our annual Black and White Sparkle Ball. It’s the traditional kick-off to the New Year. The ballroom is always glistening and glittering, the lights are dimmed a bit and as we enjoy the mirror ball’s reflections. It makes for a spectacular evening! Don’t miss it.

We’ll be dark for the 27-29th of January for Mid-Winter. Our plans are underway for another three day Albany weekend of dancing and social events. We hope to see you there.

For some years I've been telling people that one of the many things that I like about square dancing is that it doesn't matter which foot I'm on, as long as it is not someone else's. (As you can tell, round dancing is a challenge for me.) When I told our caller, Randy Dibble, at our last dance, he liked the line well enough to use on the mike.

Have a wonderful 2017 and come dance with us often! Remember to check our website whenever the weather looks iffy.

On November 11th, R Square D celebrated our Veterans with free admission to the dance and a tribute to all that served. Three to four squares of dancers from Harbor Haylofters, Happy Hoppers, Ruff & Ruffles and Cougar Squares danced to patriotic hymns called throughout the evening. We are grateful to all that have and that continue to serve this amazing country. Thank you veterans.

On The 12th of November, R Square D Dancers went to Columbia River Dancers and came back with one of their travelling banners. A great time dancing was had by all.

Thank you to Marvin and Barbara Wilburn for hosting our monthly meeting on the 21st at the Kelso Senior Center.

It’s a new year, welcome 2017. We will be bringing in the new year with a dance on the 8th celebrating with a Snowflake Frolic, let’s all hope for snow, just not too much. On the 23rd we will come together in warmth and fellowship with a dance followed up with warm winter soups, mmm. Please come join us as we start a new year of new friends, the best kind, square dancing friends.

R Square D will start a new set of lessons on January 4, 2017, tell all your friends. The lessons that have currently been running have been well attended with 4 squares on the floor for most of the night. Craig Abercrombie makes learning a lot of fun.

For more information about the R Square D club please visit our website at www.r-square-d.info or friend us on Facebook. Our Caller for R Square D is Craig Abercrombie and our cuer is Lonnie Sycks.

We had a successful and fun time dancing one tip only to guest caller Jaden Frigo while he sat at his computer in Sydney, Australia. He did a 6 couple square and it was fun to hear square dance calls in a foreign accent.

We will be starting lessons the first Wednesday in January. The first 3 nights of classes are being advertised as Party Nights to the public. $5 per person each week, youth half price. We will not be hosting dances in January and February as we focus in on developing our new dancers. We would love the help of other angels to come out on Wednesdays. Our dances will resume on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday’s in March. The first half will be a student level dance, break, and then the remainder at Mainstream level until we are at full mainstream level with our new dancers.

TTS won the trophy from Oakey Doaks with 62% of their members in attendance! We will be hosting our trophy dance March 22nd in conjunction with our New Dancer Dance. Students of other clubs will be counted towards that club’s percentage. Please encourage your new dancers to come out and support our new dancers and see who wins the trophy!

We will be celebrating our First Anniversary April 26th with a Black, Red, Silver theme (club colors).

If you would like to be added to the TTS weekly newsletter to keep up on all of the adventures and where the Banner Bandits are hitting next send an email to OregonSquareDance@gmail.com.

Happy New Year! Welcome in 2017 by attending our New Beginnings & Resolutions Dance January 7th, Renee Ruud calling & Connie Clark cueing. On the 21st, Janienne Alexander will join Connie at our Celebrate Diversity Dance.

Our Basics/ Mainstream lessons start January 17th. We hope to see lots of students & that new dancers who need some review or extra practice join us as well. They are to be held Tuesdays at Aloha Grange from 7-9.

We had a wonderful time on our visitation to Columbia River's Beatles Dance. Mark Wheeler entertained the crowd with music that still has resonance 50 years later.

Renee Ruud shared her lovely voice at our Turkey Dance in November.

The Wave Steppers’ square dance classes are “dark” until March. However, the free Wednesday night classes at the Tillamook Elks lodge, taught by club caller Joe Wrabek, resume January 4th.

The 2017 dance schedule looks like this: Club caller Joe Wrabek and line dance instructor Gwen Kiel will be doing the Club’s St. Patrick’s Day dance March 12th, the Mother’s Day dance May 13th, the County Fair dance August 12th, and the Fall Dance October 14th.

Jim Hattrick will be calling and cueing at the Spring Dance April 8th, and Harvey Hunsucker will call and cue at the Beach Dance July 8th; Mark Wheeler will be the caller, and Connie Clark the cuer, at the Elvis Dance Sept. 9th (which is also the Club’s anniversary dance); and Mike Stout will be calling at the Hawaiian Dance June 10th. Mike’s wife Julie teaches Hawaiian dancing, so we’ll be doing that, too.

The Wave Steppers’ dances are held the second Saturday of the month, on the Dance Floor at Garibaldi City Hall, 107 Sixth St. (at Acacia). About two-thirds of the building’s second floor is a dance floor, and the Club has reportedly square danced there since the building was built in 1948.

Are your new dancers excited but a little nervous about 2017 MidWinter? If you have been dancing for a long time can you remember how you could hardly wait for MidWinter but at the you did not “mess up a square?” We have a New Dancer Dance scheduled 2:30-5:00 pm on the last Sunday afternoon before MidWinter so if you are within driving distance of Roseburg, think about loading up your car with some dancers and coming to our dance on January 22 nd at the Buckeroo Barn. All calls will be at the New Dancer Level. And of course, all dancers are welcome. It’s a chance for the new dancers to dance at a new dancer level and a chance for everyone to come out and have an afternoon of dancing. Come and have fun with us. We have been busy here at the barn! Lessons are moving smoothly and our students are looking forward to joining other dancers from around Oregon at the Mid-Winter celebration in January. In order to get ready and have as much floor time as possible, they have been visiting lots of new dancer dancers…we have our new dancer dance coming up here at the barn in January.

We had a new student Christmas dance and a mainstream Christmas dance this past month. We were able to do a gift exchange for our young dancers and an ornament exchange for our adult dancers. We all had a great time and really enjoyed the company of each other after such a stressful election season.

We are all filled with gratitude, thankfulness, and appreciation for this wonderful season and hope that you are as well. May your New Year be filled with health, happiness, and lots of dancing!

See you in a square in 2017!
