Oregon Federation News
August 2019

A publication of the Oregon Federation of Square and Round Dance Clubs

Printed 20 August 2019
President's Corner

Hello all you dancers out there. I hope everyone is having a great summer and dancing your feet to the ground. I want to tell you what a great time I had at the National Square Dance Convention in Atlanta, Georgia. My three grandchildren and I drove, yes drove to Atlanta and back. What a great family experience. The youth had a fantastic program, with a separate hall to dance it, and after parties that adults could join in with the youth. The national callers where wonderful to dance to and very energetic. I encourage any of you that have the opportunity to go next year, register and go, have fun and meet people from around the world. Next year Nationals will be held close enough from several from the Northwest to attend, in Spokane, Washington. You will not regret it.

Just an FYI, Rogue Sis Q Council has put out a challenge to all out there in the dancing community. We are having a Raise the Roof Benefit dance for Beachcombers in Port Orford. We are donating ALL proceeds from this three-day event, the first weekend in August, to Beachcombers to help repair their roof. If any of you have danced at Beachcombers hall, it’s wonderful. The wood floors are wonderful to dance on, and the beautiful coast line has multiple site to visit while there. Battle Rock weekend is Labor Day every year, where we dance in the surf on Saturday morning, camp out at the hall on a beautiful grassy area, play cards in the hall during non-dancing times, and have fun with fellow dancers. The Sunday morning breakfast is restaurant style, site down and be served. Rogue Sis Q Council would like to help them keep their hall going and are challenging anyone and everyone to have a benefit dance to help a club in need.

Hope to see everyone at Summer Festival, the 3 older grandkids and I will be there running around working.

Lorri McIntosh
President OFSRDC

Editor's Note

Ah, summer. The days are long, the evenings are warm, the allergies are in full bloom. Clubs are starting to plan for their fall lessons, many clubs will be going dark, and several parts of the state are going into "festival" mode. There's lots of dancing to be had.

For one of our CCCA members, Larry Dupray, who passed away, a memorial picnic and gathering will be held at Island Park, the south shelter in Springfield. 10:00 A.M. - 2:00 This was supposed to be Wolf Pack's annual picnic, but the decision was made to honor Larry in the atmosphere of fun and camaraderie. Larry started the Wolf Pack back in 1998 on Valentine's Day. Because of his health he had not been able to call the past year or so. Sandy Harris and Lennie Ludiker have been calling. Christina remains cuer. Please attend if you are able. It is wheelchair accessible. My late husband, Kirby Goode, helped Larry with his calling when he first started. We miss them both. Sharon Greenman cued for the Wolf Pack as well and is sorely missed.

CCCA voted not to hold a dance August 31. Too many folks are gone for Labor Day. It's also my birthday, so I will take a friend to my favorite restaurant.

The hall board bought Dan Nordbye's new ElectroVoice speakers for the main hall. We have tried them out, and they sound great! Dan used them 45 minutes when he decided they were too big for him to tote around. We got a great deal on them. Thanks Dan!

We have meetings and dances on the fifth Saturdays of each year. Our board remains the same as last year. Pat Cox - President , Jackie Gale, - Vice-President, Gail Jackson - Treasurer and Christina Corelli - Secretary.

Keep on calling and cueing for fun,

Christina Corelli

Our club held two advanced dances at the Emerald Square Dance Center’s Hall B in Springfield in the month of June. The first held on Father’s Day featured Dan Nordbye in person. We are so fortunate to have Dan here from Mesa Arizona for half the year. He is calling for us once a month through September. We normally have two squares of dancers on the floor with some left over. We always have a great time and thoroughly enjoy Dan’s fine calling.

We look forward to having Dan call for us in August on the 18th. On the 11th we are hoping to have enough dancers to dance to recorded tips. We would love to have more will join us for the recorded tips because that money helps offset what we must pay to have live callers. Our coordinator Fred Beisse always finds top-notch callers for us to dance to whether they are live or recorded. Please come join us and remember we dance in Hall B which is situation at the rear of the building on Yolanda and 20th.

Please visit our website at cas-sd.yolasite.com for more information about our tentative schedule for the coming months. I see we have Dan Preedy scheduled to call for us on Feb. 9, 2020. That is something to look forward to after Mid-Winter. Mark your calendars.

In June we had our usual 2nd and 4th Friday dances, both of which were excellent. Our first dance was a benefit dance for Greenhill Humane Society. We hold this dance called “Reigning Cats and Dogs Dance” annually to help our furry friends in our area find their forever homes. We raised over $250 in cash and also had donations of pet supplies and other needed items. Jim Hattrick called and cued this dance for us; we always appreciate his cueing when Jackie Gale is unable to join us. On June 28 we had Dan Nordbye calling and Jackie Gale cueing. We tried out the speakers Dan Nordbye had loaned to us and found out later that the hall board had agreed to buy these speakers for he hall. The sound was excellent. We also saw that new LED lights had been placed around the halls and the kitchen which should see some savings on the electric bill and also should last longer and help our maintenance guys out a lot. Dan calls a fine dance, and we are looking forward to having him call one more time in September before he heads back to Mesa.

On August 9th we will hold our Hawaiian Luau dance with Jim Hattrick and Jackie Gale. It is always fun to see people wearing their Hawaiian shirts and muu-muus and leis of course. Terry Halley will call our final dance of this season on Friday, Aug. 23rd.

We understand that our sister club the Boots N Sandals will hold their last dance on the 4th Saturday at the Emerald square Dance Center. We are very sorry to see them have to fold. They are one of the longest lasting clubs in this area. Sure would be nice to see a big crowd gathered for their last dance.

See you in a square!

Our board remains the same as last year. David Lajoie - President, Kurt Jensen - Vice-President, Lorna Mercer - Treasurer, Cheryl Hagey - Secretary and Christina Corelli - Member-at-Large. Thank you all for being willing to keep your offices.

We dance almost every Sunday at the Emerald Dance Center in Springfield. 5:30 - 8:00. We dance all levels. Our caller, Tim Matteson, will adjust the levels according to who shows up to come and dance. It's always FUN, and we always have a lot of FOOD! We encourage all square dancers to join us! The floor is cushioned and comfortable! We even have heat and air conditioning!

We are using the new speakers and the old one which is positioned in the middle of the hall. Every base is covered, and everyone can hear to dance!

Please call Tim at 541-988-0399 or David at 541-520-7311 to make sure we are dancing. We are dark once in a blue moon, but we'd hate to miss you.

Keep on dancing,

Christina Corelli

It was great to get back to dancing at the McMinnville Grange in June! We had a Beach theme with beach balls, funky glasses and beach scene panels where you could have your photo taken. Shorts and wild shirts were the costume of the evening, which was warm. We had two squares and visitors from Sunset Promenaders, Toe Draggers and Valley River Dancers.

We'll be dark until September but camped out with the Toe Draggers in Vernonia in July. Who knows, we might show up at your dance sometime soon! Carmen

Corvallis Squares fall lessons: Mainstream lessons will be offered through Linn-Benton Community College, 7:30 - 9:00 p.m. at the Benton Center in Corvallis, Thursdays for 10 weeks starting October 3, ending December 13, and skipping Thanksgiving. Instructor, Bruce Lowther. Cost $79.

Our club was dark for July and also will be in August, but we're happy to see there are a variety of dances up and down the valley.

We enjoyed a club potluck in May, and at the meeting we voted to continue our successful 'yearly dance pass' for the 2019/2020 dance season. This will cover all of the Corvallis Squares dances, including the coast trip which is the 2nd weekend of March. The yearly pass will cost $80.

We look forward to our fall lessons through Linn-Benton Community College. We've found that most new dancers have been personally invited by a club member, so we're focusing on that and also decided to hold an introductory open-invitation all-comers dance at our September 14 dance. Charlotte Jeskey and Sandy Harris have agreed to call squares and line dances appropriate for all-comers. Feel free to invite folks!

Our club will hold another potluck in August. We hope you're enjoying summer in Oregon; some say nothing else can compare! Karen

As always, the IWW hall at the Rickreall Polk County Fairgrounds was dark in August, to make way for the County Fair. We continued to work at the Fair as our annual fund raiser, but our assignment has changed from the parking lots to the admission gates. We enjoyed August dancing at neighboring clubs and thank them for their hospitality and warm welcome.

Our next IWW dance at the Fairgrounds will be September 7. Come dance with us then and on the first and second Saturdays of each month.

Encourage friends, family, and work associates to join us for mainstream lessons at Salem Hospital on Sunday evening’s beginning in September. While singles are welcome, students are strongly encouraged to come as couples. Keep dancing! Dee and Bert Mackaman

The club had a birthday dance in June to celebrate 43 years of existence. We had chocolate cake, brownies, and ice cream with all sorts of toppings to decorate to your heart’s content. Yum!

We are continuing our summer schedule of dancing two hours and only stopping to work on a troublesome step. It seems to be working for those that make the session.

July was a short month for us since we were dark for the 4th and dark on the 18th for the Trails In dance for Summer Festival. We danced on July 11th and also on the 25th.

We hope to have had a short meeting on July 11 to decide what we are doing for the fall season and to either change our start time or to keep the 6:30 time we currently have. We’ll let you know what we decided. Marilyn Schmit

We Dance all year! Come join us in our air conditioned hall for three dances in August. Our regular dances are the first and third Saturdays of the month. We will also have a 5th Friday Plus dance on August 30.

July was a fun month with a demo dance on July 4 at Lancaster Village followed by great food. Our 4th of July on the 5th dance had a patriotic theme and four squares on the floor. We went dark for July 19 so we could all be at Blanchet in Salem for Summer Festival.

Mark your calendars for our Annual Corn-n-Cluck dance set for Friday September 21. That crazy chicken has something up his wing and you do not want to miss it. $8.00 for dinner and dancing. See you all on the Dance Floor. Sheila Machado

We had great fun at the Mt. Angel 4th of July parade. This was our first time doing this parade and we were very well received by the crowd watching. Bruce Lowther was our caller for the morning. This was also our first time out with our trailer. Our next parade will be Homer Davenport Days parade the first Saturday in August.

Our youth are looking forward to summer festival with their concession stand. They have a great menu and low prices. This is a fundraiser for them to help with going to next year's Pacific Northwest Teen Square Dance Festival. We definitely have to work at fundraising for the Pacific Northwest Teen Square Dance Festival since we are traveling again. But we are only going as far north as Auburn Washington next year. We had pins at summer festival and will have them available at each dance we visit. Hope to see you at a dance soon! Petrina Buchheit

Willamette Squares
Willamette Squares’ most recent dance was baseball themed. Fans of a variety of baseball teams came sporting t-shirts, baseball caps, and other attire that represented their favorite teams. Sandy’s singing calls and Jackie’s round dance cueing gave everyone a chance to feel as if they’d made home runs, and our team captain, John, announced who won the split the pot and the door prizes. What would baseball games be without hotdogs, chips, and popcorn? Willamette Squares provided all the traditional foods associated with baseball. Everyone had a good time dancing, eating, and visiting! Jodee Howard

Chaps & Petticoats - Link
Chaps and Petticoats is DARK for the summer months of July and August. Though we are not hosting dances, it certainly is not "lazy days of summer" for us.

On July 20th, our members set-up a canopy-covered food booth at Rivenes Park during the HOP Festival in Hubbard. Our booth was buzzing with thirsty people - wanting Elephant Ears, Specialty Coffee Drinks and Italian Sodas. The HOP Fest is an annual event for the Chaps and Petticoats; the funds raised support our lessons come September. We thank Vicki, our Treasurer and Marketing Chair, for organizing this event.

Did you attend the Summer Festival at the Blanchet Catholic School in Salem the weekend of July 19-21? Chaps and Petticoats had only a handful of members there (different days), as our food-booth fundraiser took priority. Thank goodness it was local - and kudos to the months of work put forth by very caring organizers and planners. IF you missed Summer Festival this year, mark your calendars, and keep Summer Festival alive by traveling to the coast: see you at the Seaside Convention Center in 2020, August 21-23.

Chaps and Petticoats will attend Valley River Dancers, "Dance Under the Stars" dance, in Newberg on July 26th. This is a "knock your socks off" event ... fun, fun, fun! You dance outside, on a tennis court coated with pulverized rubber (wear old shoes, things get a little dusty), the stars are out and you see oh-so-many friends - you can't quit smilin.'

Care to join us on August 12th at 10:00AM as we dance on the Portland Area Council's (PAC) trailer in the Aurora Colony Days Parade (on Main Street at the Aurora Park)? Stay the evening as their "Back to the Park" theme is continued with live music from 5:30-10:00PM at the Amphitheater.

Our Summer fun is not over yet! We will perform a Square Dance exhibition and audience teach on August 17th at the Clackamas County Fair, Grove Stage, at noon - come cheer us on.

WE will offer Round Lesson in Cha-Cha, taught by Connie Clark, each Sunday beginning Sept. 15th from 4:00-5:30PM (see our lesson Flyer). Are you interested - please contact Betty Chipps, as we need 13 students to hold this class. WE will also offer two-FREE Mainstream lessons, on Sept. 15th & Sept. 22th, from 6-8pm at the Maplewood Grange in Aurora. Yes we will need Angels - and Angels dance for FREE throughout our Mainstream lesson weeks.

Chaps and Petticoats will host a Trails End Dance on SEPT 6th with Scott Zinser, Calling and Dave Cooper, as Cuer - this event precedes the weekend when Portland Area Council (PAC) will host the State Federation meeting and dance at the Maplewood Grange, SEPT 7-8th.

See you in a square !

Happy Feet,

Betty Chipps

Country Cut-Ups - Link
It was great dancing on our outdoor floor on July 6th. Jim Hattrick did a great job of introducing some non-dancers to the activity we so love to do. Lynn Wunische, our line dance instructor, introduced new people to her favorite activity and drew quite a crowd. We enjoyed good food, great dancing, fine fellowship with other dancers, and nice weather.

August should bring more opportunities to dance under the stars. We thank Marc and his many volunteers for the hard work put into getting the outdoor floor ready this year.

Lynn is continuing to teach line dancing over the summer on Thursdays at 6:00 PM. Then in the fall, we will begin mainstream square dance lessons on September 12th with Scott Zinser at 7:30 PM every Thursday. Hopefully, some students will come to both.

On August 9th, you will find the Country Cut-Ups serving ice cream at the Boring and Dull Day celebration in the Boring Station Trailhead Park in Boring. There are lots of activities there, live music, and free ice cream, so come check it out, from 5:00 to 8:30 PM.

Happy Hoppers - Link
This summer is a time of enjoying old traditions and experimenting with new ideas for the Happy Hoppers. The new idea is trying out our air conditioned hall in the summer. Although the Hoppers are normally dark in the summer, this year we are having two summer dances: one in July and one in August. In order to keep our students dancing through the summer, both dances will be primarily at the mainstream level. By the time this is published, the July dance which was a pizza feast dance featuring free pizza before the dance and a fun half hour of plus followed by mainstream will have already taken place. The August 17th dance will be a time for more dancing and fellowship with friends, students and club members. By the end of the summer we should know how successful we have been with summer dances in an air conditioned building and with encouraging our students to continue dancing.

The old tradition, one of the highlights of the Hopper year, is a club picnic at the farm of Don and Joanne Oja on August 4th. As square dancers, we love to eat, and the picnic is the perfect place to sample all the great food provided by our members as well as the terrific hamburgers and hot dogs grilled to perfection by our two great cooks: Randy Amundson and Don Oja.

September will find us back in our regular schedule with plus level dancing starting the first Saturday, September 7th. We are excited to see if our second year of lessons in the new hall progress as well as our first year of lessons did. Classes will start September 9th with plus from 6:30 to 7:30, basic from 7:30 to 9:00, and mainstream from 9:00 to 9:30. We are looking forward to continuing with previous students who have not completed their level and to meeting new students ready to experience our great activity. In the meantime, we hope to square up with you at one of our summer dances or somewhere else in our square dance community.

We are ready to welcome summer with casual attire, air conditioning, and dances in our hall every second and third Saturday all summer.

We have noticed that membership in all the clubs is declining. This should be a concern of all of us. Our answer to this is to visit and support other clubs and square dance events in our area. In July we were happy to welcome a visitation to our club from the B n B’s at our first dance. Our club went dark for our second dance in July (on July 20 ) to attend and support Summer Festival in Salem. In August we are planning to visit Country Cut Ups to dance on their outdoor dance floor. We will be heading for Maplewood Grange on September 7 for the State organizational meeting dinner and dance. October will find us in Seaside attending the Seaside Sashay.

We love having guests. Come visit us and we will visit you.

Rosetown Ramblers - Link
The Ramblers have enjoyed a summer of R&R. We’ve planned a club outing to the Portland Mercado on August 17. At that time, we’ll make plans to welcome a new group of students for our fall lessons. We’ll start with a free introduction to square dancing at 7 pm on August 28, at the Bridgeport United Church of Christ, 621 NE 76th Ave., Portland. The lessons will continue Wednesday evenings from 7-8:30, at Bridgeport UCC. All are welcome!

Speaking of welcomes, you haven’t truly lived until you’ve experienced a Ramblers fall fly-in, which we call Scares and Squares. Our theme this year is Legends of the Fall. We will have three of the finest callers in square dance history: Barry Clasper (Toronto), Chris Phillips (South Florida), and Gary Monday (Seattle). The event takes place in charming Multnomah Village, at the Multnomah Arts Center, 7688 SW Capitol Highway, Portland. The dates are October 25-27. You can find details on our website: http://www.rosetownramblers.com/scares-n-squares/.

I will start out with the good news. Our VP Ken Schrock is back from surgery and has danced one full dance. He is a great inspiration in so many ways. We love you Ken.

The news of our Club is not as good. Our Club is small at this time, down from at least 60 at one time; however we do have four new members. All of us are older and dance a little slower than some Clubs. Actually this could and should appeal to dancers who have quit because their Clubs have closed or new people coming in from other places. All former dancers from wherever, come and bring friends and neighbors that fit our group. Let's keep square dancing alive in Portland.

One other thing, we have several couples that come to our Club for Round Dancing. We have a period of time that is used for Round Dancing (two cues between tips). This is very popular with our guests. Come and give us a try. We have lunch after and air condition and lots of parking and we are a friendly group.

Rogue-Sis-Q Council
Rogue Sis Q Council has put out a challenge to all out there in the dancing community.

We have new officers in place for Rogue Sis Q Council: President- Roberta Claudson, Vice-President Phil Claudson, Secretary- Lorri McIntosh, Treasurer- Debbie Creton, Federation delegate- Garrett “Blake” Smith.

Rogue Sis Q youth dance had a great time dancing to Dean Black from Yreka, Ca on July 12. Our next dance is July 10, 2020. We have the dance every year in July.

Respectfully submitted

Lorri Mcintosh

Secretary for Rogue Sis Q Council

We graduated 18 from our January class - with most of the new dancers under the age of 25. We've had a good group of dancers for Square Dance 101 - which will hopefully encourage those participants to start regular classes in September.

We are dark in the month of August due to the Josephine County Fair, but will resume in September with classes starting on Thu 9/5 and 1 dance on 9/7 with Phil Ramey & Sarge Glidewell.

We will be dark for the 3rd Saturday dance to help celebrate Circle N Square birthday in Yreka with Caller Eric Henerlau & Cuer Rikki Lobato!

Boatnik was a huge success and Joe Saltel & TJ Chadd were fabulous!!! Next year's Boatnik will feature Bronc Wise & Peter Gomez - Memorial Weekend 2020.

Fun starts on Friday and goes thru Sunday afternoon!! Plus we always plan a jet boat trip with the caller/cuer and dancers on Memorial Day.

Our 52nd birthday dance is set for December 7th with Michael Haworth & Rikki Lobato.

If you haven't danced to Mike Haworth - you don't want to miss the chance - he is a great caller from Southern California!

Although we are dark for August - there are lots of festivals happening that we plan to attend.

Happy Dancing

Greetings from Yreka. Even though our Gold Diggers dance was "intimate" in a manner of speaking we had a great time. It was good to see Lawrence and catch up. A BIG thank you to all of the Star Promenaders that attended and made our dance. Lots of good food, fellowship, and dancing. Congratulations to Francis Ramey on winning the gold filled necklace. I hope you all have marked your calendars for our birthday dance with Eric Henerlau and Rikki Lobato. The dance will be M/S, Plus and Adv. Please look for fliers for more info. Also be sure to check it out and look for another special one of a kind necklace to be raffled off at the dance, and like our Gold Diggers you do not have to be present to win. Tickets are now available.

We have been very busy this summer. We started a "Square Dance 101" session and have had great success going on 3 weeks now and have 3 squares including some past members who are now getting back into dancing again. I am so excited to see new, and familiar faces. Some of which are dancers from my past teachings in Etna, Seiad, Happy Camp, Mt Shasta, and Yreka. Check out our Facebook page for pics and videos. This has all been made possible by efforts of our president Marcia, one of our returning dancers Debbie and great cooperation from the Karuk Tribe. Our county fair will begin August 7th and we will have our "Pepsi trailer" there selling drinks. This is always a lot of work and fun. It is a major boost for our club revenue. We plan on dancing Friday night and everyone is welcome. If you would like more info on anything we are doing feel free to contact Marcia, Sherrie or myself.

Hope to see you on the floor !

Well, Diamond Lake is in the record books; at least it will be when you read this, since it is still the week before Diamond Lake when I am writing this. The weather was good, and not too many mosquitoes(I hope). I am also going to, optimistically, hope there was no smoke. Writing this "blurb" ahead of time, can be a challenge, so I hope I am not too far off on the information I am sending your way.

The next "Game Night" will be on August 9. There is a lot going on in the month of July and we did not want to step on any toes. The theme will be "Sandwich Fixins." Come out and join us. It is a "Hoot." If you don't play Mexican Train, there is usually a game of cribbage going on or if there is some other "game" you would like to play, let us know. We are open to most any table game. We always have a potluck with a them.

Phil Ramey will pick up the "Back to Basics" dance on August 16, then on August 24 will be the annual "Ramey RoundUp."

Classes are going to start on Thursday, September 12. Remember - the First 5 lessons are "Free."

As some of you may know, the Beachcomber’s Cove in Port Orford is in need of a new roof.

We have found a contractor and plan to have the roof finished before the first rains. So far we have raised about a third of the costs utilizing a number of local fundraisers. We have a number of upcoming fundraising events planned for the rest of the summer, including our Battle Rock Weekend during Labor Day.

Hope to see you on the dance floor!

The Hahn Barn Dance on June 29th was a huge success! Scott Zinser did a great job of keeping everyone on their toes with Ken Pratt providing a stellar performance with the rounds. Weather was perfect, and of course, plenty of good food provided by all the great cooks. There were New dancers and many who had never been to the Barn Dance before. Thanks to Joanne Switzer the treasurer for TVC and to Leslie Tallman and John Semm for helping at the door. There were 7 squares on the floor for most of the evening. The Sunset Promenaders took home the TVC Banner for the club with the highest percentage of members present with the Hoedowners a close second. Thanks also goes to Gary and Bette Hahn for graciously hosting the event on their farm. As usual, Tom & Janice were in the thick of things helping out wherever they could.

The TVC has welcomed a new club to our Council, the Oak Hills Squares. They dance at the Oak Hills Recreation Center with club caller Lane Clem. See report below. The TVC now boasts 14 member square dance clubs, the largest Council in the State!

Our next Council event is a fifth Saturday Dance, held at the Aloha Grange on August 31st. This dance will feature Daryl Clendenin calling with Connie Clark cueing. The dance begins with pre-rounds at 7:30 followed by Mainstream with rounds at 8:00. Every third tip will be Plus. This dance is co-hosted by the Valley Squares.

Our Plus classes have ended and we are enjoying newcomers who are adding to the fun of square dancing. I hope they enjoyed us. Please welcome these newcomers when they visit your club.

Hahn Barn Dance had beautiful weather and Gary and Bette were wonderful hosts even transporting some folks up and down the hill making sure that all had an opportunity to visit the pond. They deserve a big Thanks! The pot luck was excellent and the desert table overflowed with delicious treats. Over seventy people enjoyed dancing to the calling of Scott Zinser and cueing of Ken Platt

Planning the TVC New Year’s Dance is underway by the hosts Eager Beavers and Sunset Promenaders. The colors this year are black, silver, and red so you can start thinking about which party outfit you will wear.

The good food and gentle activities are yours at our August 14th picnic at Noble Woods Park in Hillsboro from 3 pm to dusk. Remember to bring your chairs to rest in the shade after a vigorous game of holey board baseball and mental stress of guessing how many jellybeans are in the jar. Bring a dish to share.

We dance on most holidays. Even if you have a job, you can join us once in a while. Our three callers keep us on our toes as each week one seems to have some new twist to keep our minds sharp. All plus dancers are invited to dance with us on Monday afternoons, 1:00 p.m. - 3:00, at the Sunset Presbyterian Church, 14986 NW Cornell Road in Portland. Please check for up to date information at www.EagerBeavers.info.

Hoedowners had a busy June. Our Strawberry dance was well attended and everyone enjoyed the Strawberries, cake, and ice cream after the dance.

On Movie night Cinderella and Price Charming came and danced the night away. Dorothy and Toto got lost from her yellow brick road and stopped by for directions and after a few dances we helped them get back on the path to find the Wizard.

Coming in August we have the Roaring 20's dance with Randy Dibble calling while Daryl is away. We will cool off with Ice Cream Sundaes. For our Summer's End dance Daryl will be back and Ken Pratt will be cueing. We will serve melons and fruit at the break.

Parties are always more fun when fun people come to celebrate. At our annual Red, White, and Blue Dance the Country Cut-ups made a visitation and went home with a banner, for us to retrieve when we visit them. We wound up the dance half an hour early to have time to enjoy Dan's home-cranked ice cream topped by fresh strawberries and blueberries, helped by Debbie.

This will be out in time to remind you that our traditional Root Beer Float Dance will be August 3rd.

Hello dancers. Are you having the opportunity to dance with other clubs as you are out on summer travels? Though we experience different styles, square dancing has the same moves all around the world. Our caller, Craig Abercrombie said he and Judy danced on the Great Wall in China. Another friend told me about dancing to an Asian caller, the accent was difficult for dancers to understand but since she had been raised around Asian speakers she was able to understand the calls so she would repeat to her square and they didn't miss a beat.

Have I mentioned that R Square D has moved from the Washington Sou'Wester Council to the Evergreen Council? Our closeness to Vancouver/Portland make it easier for more members to participate in Council activities. Chris Poole and Sandy Sims are our Evergreen representatives. We are now members of both the TVC and the Evergreen Councils.

Hard to believe I am already writing about August dances! And school time around the corner. We will be collecting school supplies at our August 14th dance, if you help with this donation cause please include the sales receipt for our tax purposes.

August 28th will be our "Last Hurrah" for summer dancing. Root beer floats will be our treat for the evening. For your comfort, dance attire through the summer, is casual.

Summer news and info will be on our website: www.r-square-d.info 2nd and 4th Wednesday. Dance times: 7pm - 8pm Plus with advanced rounds, 8pm - 9:30pm Mainstream with rounds. 106 NW 8th Ave, Kelso, WA 98626 by the Rotary spray park at the intersection of Hwy 4 and W Main, Kelso/Longview.

Well as I write this edition I trust you are pretty well all danced out, having just got back from Salem and a great Summer Festival! A great big thank you to all those who worked in front and behind the scenes to make this dance a success!

Our June 21st dance was a very special dance to raise funds for one of our dancers who was traveling to Uganda on a medical mission. It was very well attended and the Timber Twirler’s club and their caller and cuer were there to help KC and Bev. It was so much fun and we raised several hundred $$ for our special dancer friend JoAnne Bostwick.

August 2nd dance theme will be “Beach Blanket Bingo” with all singing calls. We will be handing out bingo numbers during the dance, and then at the break we’ll call the numbers, and you could be the lucky winner.

Hope to see many of your smiling faces in a square soon.

In June we visited the Chaps and Petticoats in Aurora, where our caller Terry Halley and our cuer Sandra Pinion led the dance. Also in June we had our last two club dances of the summer, because in July and August we’re dark due to the heat.

In August we’re planning two visitations: to the Sunset Promenaders on Saturday the third, and to the Hoedowners on Saturday the 24th. Also we have scheduled a square dancing demo-dance for the public at the Tigard Library on August 17th at 1:00. To round out the summer we’re having our club’s annual potluck picnic at Snyder Park in Sherwood, relaxing up on the hill, under the shady trees.

During our last two dances in May, our caller tried out a few new songs, including one that was suggested by one of our frequent guests. Our cuer also did some new songs as well. Love the variety.

Our dances in July are on the 10th and the 24th. And, as usual, we will be serving refreshments downstairs right after every dance.

Summer will be in full swing in July, and so a reminder: if the temperature on the day of the dance reaches 90 degrees or above, we may cancel the dance. We will let everyone know when this happens.

Our club continues to be a fun place where friends gather, have some food and practice moves they want to work on before the weekend dances. Lots of belly laughs to go around. We would love to have you come join us!

See you around in a square
