September 2019

A publication of the Oregon Federation of Square and Round Dance Clubs

Printed 20 September 2019
Editor's Note

September represents the start of a new square dance "year", and many clubs will be starting up lessons. Be sure to let us know in your club news if you have tried something new for gaining and retaining students. We can all use more ideas.

Click here to find out how to get your information into the OFN, including dances, lessons, photos, flyers, advertisements, and caller/cuer information.

We have set up an email mailing list to notify people when a new edition of the online OFN is available, and for other important news about the OFN. To subscribe to this mailing list, just fill out this information:

Federation Meetings

At the Summer Festival state meeting, the ballots were counted, and the constitutional amendment was approved, which means line dance clubs are now eligible for membership in the Federation as well as square, round, contra clubs, and caller and cuer organizations.

The September state meeting will be held September 7 and 8 at the Maplewood Grange in Aurora. All are welcome to join the dance Saturday night. Click the thumbnail to see the flyer. The second flyer includes a list of hotels and motels near the Aurora area.

State Fair

This flyer lists the time of the dancing sessions at the Oregon State Fair. Please contact Marilyn Schmit at 503-508-0539 to sign up for one or more of the sessions.

Mid-Winter

Oregon's Mid-Winter Festival 2020 will be held January 24, 25 and 26, 2020, at the Linn County Fairgrounds in Albany.

Summer Festival

We hope you are planning to attend the 2020 Summer Festival, to be held at the Seaside Convention Center in Seaside on August 21-23, 2020. This festival is sponsored by the entire Tualatin Valley Council.

Other National Events

The 69th National Square Dance Convention® will be held in nearby Spokane, Washington, June 18-21, 2020. The 70th National Square Dance Convention® will be held in Jackson, Mississippi, June 23-26, 2021.

Corporation Renewal Status

All clubs in the Oregon Federation are required to maintain their status as non-profit corporations with the State of Oregon. The Secretary of State's office mails out a renewal notice about a month before your registration expires every year. The following clubs expire this month:

September 2 -- Tumbleweeds
September 3 -- Wave Steppers
September 11 -- Hoedowners
September 15 -- Willamette Squares
September 19 -- Braids & Braves
September 21 -- Mid-Willamette Council
September 23 -- Lebanon Square Circlers
September 23 -- Valley River Dancers

Our meetings and dances are held on the fifth Saturdays which is about 4 times a year. We will NOT be having a dance August 31 as that is Labor Day weekend. We wish everyone a safe Labor Day and look forward to classes with new folks.

Our last dance was June 29, and I wish to thank Cherie and Pat Cox for presiding over the meeting, taking ,minutes and calling and cueing along with other CCCA members present. I was able to attend Sydnee Preedy's wedding outside of Everett, Washington that same day. Sydnee's dad is the national caller, Dan Preedy.

Our next scheduled dance will be November 30 at the dance center in Springfield. The floor in our hall is cushioned and so nice to dance on. We also have new ElectroVoice speakers purchased from Dan Nordbye. The speakers work well.

Keep on calling and cueing for fun,

Christina Corelli

We danced to Dan Nordbye in July, and some of us attended Summer Festival up in Salem Friday and Saturday for the advanced dancing being offered there. We really enjoyed the session with Dan Nordbye and will be expecting to have him one more time September 8 1:30 TO 3:30pm before he heads back to Mesa for part of he winter. We enjoy our recorded sessions as well but could not muster a square for the one scheduled in July. We sure like seeing our friends from north of us come join us on the dance floor. It’s a bit of a stretch we know for those in the Medford area to come. But all are welcome. Just be sure to check the website to be sure we are holding a dance on any given Sunday. Also be aware we dance in Hall B behind the square dance center at 2095 Yolanda in Springfield.

We danced on July 12 and July 26. We did not go dark for Diamond Lake as we have in the past. Both of our dances were fun with Jim Hattrick calling the first and Lennie Ludiker calling the second one and Jackie Gale cueing at both. Our 2nd Friday dance had a theme—Crazy T-Shirt and Watermelon Dance. We had quite a few crazy T-shirts on the floor. We all enjoy being able to dress casually during these hot summer months. Even with air-conditioning wearing square dance attire is just too hot!

In September we get our new dance year off to a great start with Jim Hattrick calling the 2nd Friday and Dan Nordbye the 4th Friday. Jackie Gale will be cueing both our dances. In September we will start our new dance format: 7:30 plus, 8-10:00PM mainstream wit no formal break. Open grazing will be allowed after 8PM and announcements and split the pot will be done at 10PM. We will also start charging $6.00 per person at the door. This will be in keeping with our neighbors to the north and to help offset our lower income. Our Sept. 13th dance will have a theme—Sock Hop!—so if you would like to wear your 50’s outfits including but not limited to white over-sized shirts or skinny white T-shirts and jeans, poodle skirts and saddle shoes or loafers, please do so.

Please come join us. We always have a great time square and round dancing and welcoming new people as well as old friends.

On a side note the clubs here in the Eugene-Springfield area will be supporting the efforts of Roger Putzler to teach new dancers the mainstream calls here at the Emerald Square Dance Center starting Tuesday, October 1st from 7PM to 8:30PM. He plans to have a plus class immediately following the mainstream class. Angels and new dancers pay $5.00 for one class or both per night. Please invite anyone interested to come join these lessons and learn from a great teacher.

I am so sorry to let you know that we lost one of our dancers recently. Joe Grivel and his husband, Fred Wilson, were long time dancers with Spin Cycle Squares. Joe had bravely battled cancer for quite a while. Joe had even come to take care of Kirby while Kirby was on hospice, and I had an appointment to attend. Joe was caring, compassionate, kind and silently strong. Our thoughts and hearts are with Fred. Joe is missed by all of us. He made a difference and our hearts are full with fond memories.

We dance almost every Sunday at the Emerald Dance Center in Springfield. 5:30 - 8:00. We dance all levels. Our caller, Tim Matteson, will adjust the levels according to who shows up to come and dance. It's always FUN, and we always have a lot of FOOD! We encourage all square dancers to join us! The floor is cushioned and comfortable! We even have heat and air conditioning!

Please call Tim at 541-988-0399 or David at 541-520-7311 to make sure we are dancing. We are dark once in a blue moon, but we'd hate to miss you.

Keep on dancing,

We had a good birthday dance and had some ice cream left so we brought some root beer and finished the ice cream off with floats. Not a bad idea, either.

The club is still doing some summer review of just dancing and slowly getting ready for lessons that start on September 12. With September on the horizon, our dance times will change back to the full three hours for our variety of dancers.

We did the Homer Davenport Days parade the first Saturday in August. We had a few more dancers than we did in July, which made it easier to switch out when someone got tired. It also allowed us to hand out lesson flyers.

Thomas has been teaching lessons this summer with two students. We have usually had just enough angels to have one square. He should finish in time for regular lessons and then they can angel Leonard's class with us.

We will be back dancing in September! Watch for our dance flyer. Petrina Buchheit

Portland Area Council invites you to our 5th-Friday dance on AUGUST 30th featuring Caller/Cuer: Daryl Clendenin and Sherri Clark. The evening opens, at the Oak Grove Community Center, with Pre-Rounds at 7:30pm, MS at 8:00pm and PLUS every 3rd Tip. We look forward to seeing you!

Have you met the Oregon Federation Officers that were announced at the May 2019 State Meeting?

The State Officers, Ten (10) Councils Representatives and other State Committee Chairs (a total of 33 members) meet four (4) times a year to communicate business and keep the Oregon Federation of Square and Round Dance Clubs (OFSRDC) functional.

Save the date of Saturday, SEPTEMBER 7th (potluck/dance) and Sunday (Meeting), SEPTEMBER 8th, 2019 - you will get the chance to meet, have dinner and dance with possibly all 33 of these members and many other dancers from the 10 Councils throughout Oregon. That’s when the Portland-Area Council (PAC) will host the Oregon Federation State events at the Maplewood Grange in Aurora, Oregon (off I-5, Exit 278) … see Flyer for times and RV dry-camping information.

It truly is an entire weekend of events. Why? Preceding the State events, on Friday, September 6th, will be a “Trails End Dance” held at Maplewood Grange and hosted by the Chaps and Petticoats. The Caller and Cuer, for the entire weekend, will be Scott Zinser and Dave Cooper, respectively.

Hosting will be a lot of work for the Portland-Area Council (PAC) - we truly need all PAC Clubs to help make the September 7th-8th events come together smoothly and show our State Federation officials an enjoyable time and our expression of gratitude! Our work starts with the Potluck provided by PAC on Saturday - so please contact your Club Representative and ask how you can help.

Oh, remember there are two dance evenings: Sept. 6th and Sept.7th. IF you have never attended a State Meeting, come Sunday, Sept. 8th (begins 9:00AM) - all are welcome to attend.

For all those keeping track, Darrell Kalmbach’s birthday was on our August 7 dance, when he was calling for our club. Keep that in mind for next year. The River City Dancers also paid us a visitation that night. (They are big on supporting their club caller and cuer.)

Our BIGGEST offering (in a long time) is our Picnic and Dance, Sept 15th . (See flyer in “Special Dances”). This is an inter-club picnic and dance. It’s billed as being at the Trails End Park in Oregon City; however, the Oregon City Parks Department assures me there is no such park. The proper name is the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center at 1726 Washington St., in Oregon City. Keep this in mind if asking the locals for directions or locating on a map. Or, just ask the locals where the big covered wagons are. Also, note this is a PICNIC, not the usual potluck. Whatever food you bring is all yours. Don’t forget your drinks, tables, seating and comfy shoes, as you will be eating and dancing on grass (unless we move to the covered area).

To be honest, this event is going to be the type where we have no idea of who might come, or clubs that will be represented. One thing we do know is that this picnic venue is going to cost the club a bundle! Donations will happily be accepted to defray costs. As of this moment, the dancing will be squares only, and Scott Zinser will be donating his time. There is the possibility of some rounds.

Rodney

Chaps & Petticoats - Link
It doesn’t feel like summer should be over, yet lessons are just around the corner.

While Summer Festival was in full swing at the Blanchet School in Salem, the Chaps and Petticoats were working hard at their annual lesson fundraiser/food booth: serving Elephant Ears and Specialty Drinks at the Hubbard Hop Festival July 20th. We heard about the fun times in Salem - I was hoping to be the winner of the “We-Are-One” Council Quilt, though only in my dreams. The Chaps were successful however, our profits were higher this year than any other year. Much thanks to our fundraiser organizers: Vicki, the Sanfords, and the Femrites and our many returning customers.

Several of us Chaps will be having a dancing-in-the-surf Labor Day weekend (August 30-Sept. 2nd) on the coast at Port Orford enjoying the Beachcomber’s hospitality and literally helping them “raise the roof” of their building after coastal storms created their havoc. A uniqueness to this facility is the plywood windows which get braced open to let the air in during the dancing - all weekend long.

It truly is a friendship and fellowship weekend which begins with Friday’s BBQ and dance, and activities throughout Saturday include: Surf Dance at 10am, the Men’s pie-baking contest at 2pm, potlucks shared at 6pm and the Men’s pies are enjoyed with Ice Cream. Come Sunday a sit-down breakfast is served, the chili/soup/chowder cookoff is 6pm, and oh-the-dancing is all weekend long! You just have to experience it yourself and dance till you drop!

The Chaps and Petticoats will open their new dance season (which precedes the State Meeting) with a Trail’s End Dance on September 6th (see our Flyer) - we welcome all dancers from the ten (10) Councils throughout Oregon. The Maplewood Grange field will be open to RV dry-campers beginning Sept. 6th.

Are you ready to meet the Federation executive board September 7th? The Portland Area Council (PAC) will host the State Dance and Meeting at the Maplewood Grange in Aurora September 7-8. PAC looks forward to serving a potluck feast Saturday at 5:45-6:45pm, followed by Rounds at 7pm and Mainstream (with Plus too) at 7:15-10:15pm (see STATE Flyer for the weekend schedule). The featured Caller/Cuer for the weekend will be Scott Zinser and Dave Cooper. The Federation executive board meeting is Sunday, September 8th (begins 9:00am) - all are welcome to attend.

Chaps and Petticoats will offer two (2) lessons starting September 15th (see our lesson Flyers): Cha-Cha with Instructor Connie Clark (4:00-5:30pm) and Mainstream (6-8pm) taught by Scott Zinser. Our Sept. 15th and Sept. 22nd Mainstream lessons are introductory and free, so bring a friend - and as always, we appreciate our Angels help - Angels dance for free.

Our third Friday dance, September 20th, is a special evening for the Chaps and Petticoats. Our Caller will be Ian Craig and we showcase our local youth Cuer, Julia Buchheit - come cheer her on!

Happy Feet!

Lynn Wunische will continue to teach line dancing on Thursdays at 6: 00 to 7:00 PM, so you can make Thursdays a double header!

Don’t forget to save the date for our annual Ham, Egg, and Pancake Breakfast and Bazaar! It is Sunday, October 20th from 8 AM to 1 PM. Happy Hoppers - Link
It’s been a great summer for Hoppers. So far we have had two fun filled and well attended activities: the Pizza Dance in July and the annual picnic in August. If you were at the Pizza Dance, you know that everyone enjoyed the pizza, visiting with friends, and a great dance. By the time this is published we all will have had one more chance to dance together at our second summer dance on August 17th. The goal was to encourage our students to keep dancing through the summer, so the dances were primarily mainstream level. Since we now have an air-conditioned building, it seemed a perfect opportunity to maintain our contact and friendship with the terrific people we have met in our classes and to learn whether or not our new location was suitable for summer dances. So far the experience has been positive. Perhaps we will decide to host summer dances next year.

August 4th over sixty dancers gathered for our club picnic at Joanne and Don Oja’s farm. Their farm is the perfect location for this event. This year was especially fun as we were treated to a table side magic show put on by our own magician, John Kaleta. People are still trying to figure out how he got the 8 ball out of the playing card box!

Saturday, September 7th, will be the first dance in our regular dance season. We will resume our normal format with rounds at 7:30 to 8:00, plus dancing from 8:00 to 9:45, and a break with snacks following the dance.

Our lesson schedule will also resume in September. The first lesson night is scheduled for September 9th. Plus lessons will be from 6:30 to 7:30, basic from 7:30 to 9:00 and mainstream 9:00 to 9:30. We had a lot of fun with the great people in our lesson groups last year, and we are hoping for a repeat performance.

It is with great sadness that we report of the recent and sudden death of our dear member Bert Labedz. She is loved and sorely missed.

As we have mentioned in previous articles, our club does visitations to other clubs every month. We strongly believe this is how we support each other and bring more dancers to the dance floor. We now have a nice collection of banners from other clubs and recently have enjoyed having clubs visit us to retrieve their banners. At our first dance in July , we had 97 dancers. This was the result of having a visitation from Columbia River Dancers, B n B as well as guests from other clubs. We have been informed that we are expecting two more clubs to visit us in August. If your club is not actively doing visitations, we encourage you to do so.

In August we visited Country Cut Ups and enjoyed dancing on their outdoor dance floor under the stars. Then the next week, we surprised our caller Darrell Kalmbach who was calling on his birthday at BNB with a SECRET surprise visitation. B n B knew we were coming and helped us keep it a secret .Thank you B nB and Country Cut Ups for such great hospitality.

On September 7 we will be having a visitation to Maplewood Grange in Aurora to attend the State organizational meeting , dinner and dance on September 7. Then the next day, Sunday September 8, lessons for new and beginner dancers begin. That will be from 6-8 PM at our hall ( Milwaukie Community Center) and we are offering the first 8 lessons free.

We will also be having our usual two club dances each month on the second and third Saturday at Milwaukie Community Center at 42nd and Jackson Street in Milwaukie. We love having visitors and everyone is welcome.

Rogue-Sis-Q Council
The youth dance in July went well with Dean Black, from Yreka, calling at Fruitdale Grange in Grants Pass. Several people showed up and had a great time dancing and enjoying some boiled peanuts that Lorri McIntosh brought back from Georgia after attending the National Square Dance Festival.

Raise the Roof for Beachcombers benefit dance went exceptionally well. Malcom, from Port Orford Beachcombers, came over in support of the dance to help put a new roof on the Beachcombers dance hall. Rogue Sis Q callers and cuers volunteered their time, the Star Promenaders donated the hall for the entire weekend, and big raffle baskets were available for dancers to buy tickets and win. We even had Grant Self, one of the men from Stars, bake a Granny Smith apple pie and a fresh blackberry pie, and each pie was raffled off to the highest bidder, kinda like they do in Port Orford. Dancing in sprinklers, instead of the surf at Battle Rock, felt refreshing with the hot August weather. Each dancer who danced in the sprinklers received a dangle for their efforts and support. The final hurrah for the weekend was Sunday morning breakfast with all you could eat pancakes, bacon and eggs. Many stayed after breakfast to play train, dominoes and rummicubes, waiting for the Rogue Valley Callers and Cuers Hot August Hoedown on Sunday afternoon. The new officers worked together to have a successful weekend. The council’s final accounting for the benefit dance? We sent $816.00 in funds collected from the Raise the roof weekend to Beachcombers to help with the new roof.

Respectfully submitted

Lorri McIntosh

Secretary for Rogue Sis Q council

The Charlie’s have been dark for the month of August, however we have been busy with other dances and preparing for new classes starting in September!! We danced at the Josephine County Fair 2x and had a booth at the fair to promote dancing. Lots of fun, as always!

A big change for the club – the club voted to hire Chuck Simpkins as our club caller. He will be calling 50-60% of our dances, as well as continuing to be our instructor. We will still have guest callers throughout the year; but wish to congratulate and thank Chuck for agreeing to be our club caller.

Classes start soon!! Tuesday will be a Mainstream FunShop from 630-8pm. A new Plus class will follow from 8-9:30pm. September 3rd will be a “Bust The Rust” Dance/Workshop to get ready for classes and will be both Mainstream and Plus dancing, called by Chuck. Mainstream FunShops and Plus classes will continue every Tuesday. On Thursday, September 5th, we will welcome new students and angels for our beginner classes! The 1st 3 classes(5th, 12th & 19th) are open to new dancers and the dancers 1st class is free; and $6 for each class after that. Classes start at 6:30pm. As always, we welcome and encourage angels to come help the new dancers, which only improves their skills as well!

We will only have 1 dance in September. On September 7th, Phil Ramey will call and Sarge Glidewell will cue our “Dance For Smiles.” Should be lots of fun and a chance to get back into the swing of things. Pre Rounds are at 7pm. MS/Plus squares start at 730 and we dance until 10pm. We are dark on September 21st to help Circle N Square celebrate their 65th birthday in Yreka!! What a great dance it will be with Eric Henerlau calling!! Rikki Lobato will be cueing rounds; and the dance kicks off with Advanced from 6-730pm. Pre Rounds at 730pm and squares start at 8pm. See you there!!! I hope that the Charlie’s who are attending the wonderful Rogue Valley Rendezvous in Medford will be sure and take Saturday nite to drive down to Yreka and support one of our councils’ clubs! Going to be a great weekend all-around!

We are also busy planning for our birthday dance on Dec 7th – with Michael Haworth and Rikki Lobato – will be a great time. Another treat this year is the chance to dance to Mike Sikorsky in November. Look for flyers!!

Wow, for a “dark” month – there was sure a lot to do and get ready for!!

Looking forward to seeing everyone in a square soon!!

Our county fair is now over. Our "Pepsi Booth" was staffed and another year is on the books. A big thank you to all of the volunteers who braved the heat, wind, rain, lightning, and power outages. Thank you to Phillip and Roberta for coming down and donating their time in the booth.

We took a short break after the fair from our Square Dance 101 class but will resume next week. We currently have two squares and hope to increase that number when we open up to new dancers on Sept. 9, & 16. The wheels keep turning in preparation for our Birthday dance Sept 21. I know it will be lots of fun. As always, we want to invite everyone to come out and dance. With the conflict of another dance being held at the RVSDC with three national callers, I personally hope dancers will support our club as we are part of the Rogue Siskiyou council, and support it whenever possible. I understand wanting to dance to the "Top Dogs" but I certainly view Eric as a "Top Dog". As a reminder, we have another special necklace that we are raffling off, we also have a few other special custom door prizes for attendees. Look for fliers for more info.

Hope to see you on the floor!

Well, Diamond Lake Festival is in the records books. The weather was good and not too many mosquitoes, at least as long as there was a breeze blowing.

The next “Game Night” will be on September 13th. There was a lot going on in the months of July and August, so we postponed it until September. The theme will be “Sandwich Fixins.” Come out and join us. It is a “Hoot.”

The Stars “Club Picnic” will be on September 8th. Wayne & Debbi Weaver have extended an invitation to all for the use of their home for this event. Thank you, Wayne & Debbi!

Phil Ramey will start a new “Plus” class on Monday, September 9th from 6:30-8:30pm.

Classes are going to start on Thursday, September 12. Remember – The Frist 5 lessons are “Free.”

Since the OFN is published mid month, you may still have time to attend the TVC fifth Saturday Dance, held at the Aloha Grange on August 31st. This dance will feature Daryl Clendenin calling with Connie Clark cueing. The dance begins with pre-rounds at 7:30 followed by Mainstream with rounds at 8:00. Every third tip will be Plus. The Columbia River Dancers, while being dark this summer, were very active. We went hunting for those elusive banners we gave to clubs that we nice enough to visit us. Not only did we get banners back we visited clubs and they gave us theirs.

Now as the weather gets cool enough to dance again at the Hazel Dell Grange we will help a school get started with our Back to School dance on September 14th. We are encouraging dancers to bring some school supplies. Renee Ruud will be our guest caller that evening. Come join us for a great evening of fun.

Just because we did not dance on a Saturday does not mean we gave up on lessons. New dancers continued to learn at our Tuesday night lessons. We start a new class on the first Monday of each month with Jim Hattrick as our instructor. Beginners at 7 PM and mainstream about 8:30.

The annual Cloggers get together will mean we will be DARK on the 28th. We probably will be heading out looking for another banner, so look for us that night.

July came and went too quickly. What happened? I may have missed it because of the naps on those hot July afternoons.

How about having Christmas in July? Santa did not come down the chimney and deliver presents but Jim Hattrick made up for it by wearing a jacket with all the decorations you see on Christmas cards. The air conditioning seemed to be struggling so the cool winter time music helped us think cool. Most joined in the festivities by wearing holiday themed outfit. We even tried something new for us - dancing in a hexagon instead of a square. Most of us caught on pretty well and I might even try it again because it does work your brain.

NOTICE : On Labor Day, September 2nd, we will be dancing at the Aloha Grange located at SW 185th and TV Highway. Cookie Day meeting will be Monday, September 9th, at Sunset Presbyterian Church. If you are going to the State Fair on Labor Day look for Mainstream dancing exhibit.

All are encouraged to attend Anniversary Dances to keep the spirit of Square Dancing alive and well. This month Wave Steppers celebrates September 14th, on the 21st Toe Draggers, and the Tri Squares on the 27th. They will appreciate your support.

Speaking of new clubs there is one to visit on Monday evenings in Oak Hills located off Hwy. 26 at Cornell Rd. They have joined the TVC/ Plan to visit the Oak Hills Squares and welcome the new kids on the block.

Planning the TVC New Year’s Dance is underway by the hosts, Eager Beavers and Sunset Promenaders. The colors this year are black, silver, and red so you can start thinking about which party outfit you will wear.

We dance on most holidays. Even if you have a job, you can join us once in a while. Our three callers keep us on our toes as each week one seems to have some new twist to keep our minds sharp. All plus dancers are invited to dance with us on Monday afternoons, 1:00 p.m. - 3:00, at the Sunset Presbyterian Church, 14986 NW Cornell Road in Portland. Please check for up to date information at www.EagerBeavers.info.

Hoedowners - Link
"Summer afternoon; to me those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language” Henry James. Those words were a total inspiration for the Hoedowners in July this year. On July 13th we held our Hawaiian Luau dance with Daryl Clendenin on the mic calling and Julie Stiers cueing. We also had Dan Nordbye take the stage as a guest caller. The Sunset Promenaders were out in force with almost two squares.

Then on the 27th we held our annual Root Beer Float Dance. They tasted as cool and refreshing as all those soda fountain floats of our youths. We were all charmed when Melissa James called a tip. We hope to hear more from her. The Columbia River Dancers claimed a banner while seven other clubs had members who joined us.

On July 30th we joined the boys of summer when we attended our annual Hoedowner Hops baseball game. Which do we enjoy more; the sound of a baseball meeting a bat or the great buffet the Hops serve? We rooted for the home team, who won, we sang Take Me Out to the Ballgame during the 7th inning stretch and took lots of pictures with Barley the Hop’s mascot. It was the quintessential, All American, evening.

So what lies ahead? On September 10th we begin our fall mainstream lessons; 7 pm, at the Aloha Grange.

On September 14th we’ll have our Farmer’s Market Dance and on September 28th our Caller’s Choice Dance. Please join us.

Oak Hills Squares Club dances every Monday night at the Oak Hills Recreation Center on NW 153rd and NW Oak Hills Dr. from 6:30 to 8:30pm. Dress is casual except on the first Monday of the month, when square dance attire is encouraged. Lane Clem is our caller and cuer. Our dances are currently at class level. This class is scheduled to finish by mid-August, and a new class will begin on September 9th. Then the schedule will be class from 6:30 to 7:30, and regular dance from 7:30 to 8:30.

We are excited to have been accepted by the TVC, and by the Oregon Federation.

We had a demo dance in the neighborhood as part of the festivities on the Fourth of July, dancing beside the pool. We will also be doing a demo dance at the Cedar Mill Farmer’s Market on September 14th from 9:30 to 10:30 am, in the Safeway parking lot at Murray Rd. and Cornell Rd.

Come visit us any Monday night.

R Square D - Link
R Square D has had wonderful Summer dances. We have been pleased with our air conditioning, having mostly 4 squares on the floor, it helps to keep all those bodies cool. As Craig played on summer vacation, we enjoyed Jim Raupp calling and the Cougar Squares attending our second July dance. We invited Jim, Paula, and the Cougars to join the R Square D at the Chinese Gardens for dinner before the dance. We filled the back room they have for groups. Isn't that like the gatherings of the "old days"? We were lucky everyone was still able to dance (or perhaps needed to) after such a loaded spread of food.

It has been such a fun dance summer! But, with the long days drawing to a close we go back to regular dance days for September. REMEMBER, Second Friday, Fourth Saturday. Wait a minute! I don't mean that the fun dancing stops, oh no, just different days.

As you are planning ahead please make sure our Octoberfest weekend is on your calendar, October 11th and 12th at Rose Valley Grange. A rocking good time with Adam Christman and Craig Ambercrombie. Please see the flyer for all the particulars.

Our schedule is: 7pm - 8pm Plus with advanced rounds, 8pm - 9:30pm Mainstream with rounds. Location: 106 NW 8th Ave, Kelso, WA 98626 by the Rotary spray park at the intersection of Hwy 4 and W Main, Kelso/Longview. Our dances are $6 donation.

The Toe Draggers have had a busy and fun summer. Our summer camp-out was at Vernonia City Park, where one of our prominent couples had a shot gun wedding! (with deacon brother KC officiating!) What a Hoot!

August 2nd, we had 2 ½ squares in attendance for our Beach Blanket Bingo dance, and we even played a game of bingo at break.

Well it’s that time… This year our square dance lessons will take place 2 days a week. Starting Wednesday September 18th from 7:00-9:00pm, and then again on Saturday September 21st from 10:00-12:00 noon. We plan on giving this schedule a trial run for 2-3 weeks and then reevaluate our progress.

Even though Tri Squares were dark in July and August, our preplanned four summer visitations to other clubs went very well and kept us dancing. We visited the Bachelor ‘N Bachelorettes, Valley River’s “Under the Stars” Dance, Sunset Promenaders, and as I write this, we’ll visit the Hoedowners at the end of August. We are so thankful for all their air conditioning, some provided by Mother Nature.

In September please mark your calendar to attend our 21st anniversary dance, "Celebrate Good Times!" on Friday the 27th. It should be lots of fun with our cuer Sandra Pinion and special guest, national caller Adam Christman joining us!

Also on Sunday afternoons starting September 22nd we begin our lessons: Two-Step at 2:00 with Sandra Pinion, and Mainstream-B51 at 3:30 with Terry Halley, at the Tigard Grange. Please join us!

On July 10th we were Dark because our caller, Janienne, was on vacation. I hear that she had a really great time.

We had nearly two squares at our July 24th dance. We all had a great time.

Some of us attended the Summer Festival in Salem. Janienne called for one hour that Saturday morning, and then again for another hour at the Mid Winter Festival Promo Party. She got us through some figures that many of us have not danced in a long time, or hardly at all. It was great to do something different for a change.

Our next scheduled dances are on September 11th and 25th. As always, a reminder: if the temperature on the day of the dance reaches 90 degrees or above, we may cancel the dance. We will let everyone know when this happens.

Our club continues to be a fun place where friends gather, have some food and practice moves they want to work on before the weekend dances. Lots of belly laughs to go around. We would love to have you come join us!

See you around in a square....

The Valley River Dancers dance Plus on 2nd Fridays, and Mainstream on 4th Fridays in Newberg at the Chehalem Community Center, located on the corner of 2nd and Howard Streets. We dance ‘A’ on 5th Saturdays at the Woodburn Senior Estates Community Club. Randy Dibble is our Caller. Ken Pratt cues 2nd Friday; Sherri Clark cues 4th Friday. https://www.valleyriverdancers.org

Dance Under the Stars last month at the tennis courts as part of the Old Fashioned Festival was a fun evening with great weather. The Newberg Old Fashioned Festival Queen’s Court made an appearance and Randy Dibble spread royalty around into several of the seven squares dancing so we could show the gals what we do. There were some big smiles and everyone had a great time. The next morning the Valley River Dancers dazzled the town’s people by dancing in the Festival parade to upbeat singing calls by Randy Dibble. The parade theme was “Dancing in the Streets,” and that’s exactly what we did!

A round dance workshop continues preceding our 2nd Friday dance, led by Ken and Dianne Pratt, beginning at 6:30 pm. Come work on your round dancing moves with us. Scott Zinser will be guest calling the Plus dance.

Our Mainstream September 27th dance will feature a black light, so come glow in the dark and have some Friday evening fun dancing with us. Square dancers are invited to Abby's Pizza after the dance to enjoy complimentary sodas.

Mainstream lessons begin Tuesday, September 3rd 6:30-8 p.m. at the Chehalem Community Center. Cost is $68 for the 12-week course taught by Randy Dibble. An ‘A’ workshop continues from 8-9:30 p.m. Cost $6.

Buckeroo - Link
The heat has not slowed us down here at the Buckeroo Barn! Our new cooling system has been put it to use this summer!

Our first dance of the month was our Annual Ladies Night Out Dance. We had Janienne Alexander down from Tualatin to call for us, and Rickie Labato cued for the round dancers. We had a large turnout and everyone had a great time!

We also danced at the Douglas County Fair this month. Douglas County Fair allows us to hold dances every night at the fair. Past members of the Buckeroo Barn have built a nice wooden dance floor that we continue to use. We are part of the entertainment so we are asked to wear square dance attire, but it is structured as a dance not an exhibition. It is so much fun to dance under the stars and be part of such a fun community event. We are very happy that the Umpqua Area Council continues to sponsor this event each year.

We had our Back to School Barn Sale in August. We do several fundraisers throughout the year to help us raise money for the upkeep of the barn. We had a large selection of great items, so if you need treasures watch for our next sale!

Remember… we are just a short drive south from the Portland area, so plan to join us in the near future. We dance the first and third Saturdays and always enjoy having visitors. We have members of all ages and are a family friendly club.

Happy dancing,

Robin P. Faltersack
