Oregon Federation News
March 2020

A publication of the Oregon Federation of Square and Round Dance Clubs

Printed 21 March 2020
President's Corner

Welcome to spring! Or at least it should be close.

As we are gearing up for traveling to some of the spring and summer festivals and conventions please make sure you are ready for travel.

If you don’t usually travel much or make big purchases on your credit card, make sure that you contact your bank ahead of time to let them know that you will be traveling and where so that they don’t block you trying to pay for your hotel room.

If you are traveling internationally, check your phone service and see what you need to do to still receive and make calls (provided you want to stay in touch locally while you are gone). Also you can order currency from your bank for the country you are going to ahead of time.

Something to know as you are going to larger dances is the Emergency Call for Medical Aid.

  1. When a dancer goes down, one other dancer in the square will attend to the injured dancer.

2.The other dancers will back up in a circle, to give the injured and attending dancer room and air.

  1. The remaining dancers will lift their hands into an arch, known as the Emergency Call For Medical Aid (ECMA) formation.

  2. Upon seeing this, the caller or hall monitor will place an Emergency Call For Medical Aid; summoning paramedics, etc. If this does not occur, a dancer should run to the stage to alert the caller, or those in charge, so the proper authorities can be summoned as quickly as possible.

If you don’t feel well while in a square or just can’t finish the tip, signal to a dancer watching who isn’t dancing for them to come take your place. Or if you know that you are likely to have to have someone replace you – make sure that you make arrangements with another dancer before you head out onto the floor. Don’t just leave the square without a dancer if you can avoid it.

See you at a dance soon.
Karyn Buchheit

Editor's Note

Congratulations to Tami Helms & Tim Keck, winners of the 2020 Randall Award. This is the highest honor the Federation bestows on members of our community.

Our clubs and councils are in the process of electing officers for the next square dance year. Please take some time to consider how you can help your local organizations to thrive.

Coronavirus Update

Many of our square dance organizations are canceling dances, classes, meetings, and special events in response to the rapid spread of the coronavirus. We've compiled a list of the cancelations we know about on the Federation's web page here.

Congratulations to the 2020 Randall Award Winners

Tami Helms and Tim Keck from the PAC!

Federation Meetings

At the January 26 Federation meeting, a slate of officers for the 2020-21 year were presented. Ballots will be going out to all club secretaries this month, due back before the April 26 meeting. The candidates are:

The current President, Karyn Buchheit, automatically becomes Past President. The current 1st Vice President, Gary Clark, automatically becomes President. The current Treasurer, Marilyn Schmit, is in the first year of a 2-year term.

The next Federation meeting will be in Klamath Falls, on April 26, 2020.

Mid-Winter

Oregon's Mid-Winter Festival 2020 will be held January 24, 25 and 26, 2020, at the Linn County Fairgrounds in Albany.

Summer Festival

We hope you are planning to attend the 2020 Summer Festival, to be held at the Seaside Convention Center in Seaside on August 21-23, 2020. This festival is sponsored by the Eager Beavers and the Hoedowners.

Publicity and Education

During our Mid-Winter seminar on Social Media we briefly discussed some popular social media sites followed by a mini informational session on how to create and use your own Facebook page. We also looked at how to create Groups, Pages, and Events in Facebook. I’ve attached the handout that I distributed during the seminar for your information: Social Media and Facebook Basics. In addition to learning about Social Media, we briefly discussed how to convert Word and Publisher files to a photo format so that the files can be posted on Facebook or in the OFN: Converting Word to Picture Format. We also talked about the difference between Windows Print Screen and Apple’s Screen Shot.

If you have any questions on the information, please contact me.

Our next scheduled dance is February 29 (Leap Year!) at the dance center in Springfield. The members of CCCA will call and cue a fun dance for you! The floor in our hall is cushioned and so nice to dance on. The Eugene Opera is using our facility that day but will be finished in time for our CCCA meeting and dance. Pre-Rounds are at 7:30 and square dance from 8:00 to 10:00. Put this on your new calendars!

Keep on calling and cueing for fun,

Christina Corelli

We continue to dance mostly to recorded tips on two Sundays a month when there are enough dancers available. A poll is taken the week before a scheduled dance to assure we will have a square. We dance at the Emerald Square Dance Center at 2095 Yolanda Ave. in Springfield off I-105

At times we have two squares of dancers on the floor in Hall B behind the center. We’re a tight knit group with members who love dancing at the advanced level; some of us also dance at the C-1 level. We have been offering a class to dancers who want to upgrade their skill level to C-1. This group sometimes meets for one hour before the advanced dance which goes from 2-4PM and sometimes they meet at the library in Junction City. If you’d like details and would like to brush up your challenge skills call Fred Beisse at 458-221-3564. For a look at our future schedule, please go to our website at http://cas-sq.yolasite.com. Be sure to call ahead to find out if we are still dancing on any particular date (unless you are on Fred’s email list and have gotten a “Go” from Fred.

Hope to see some of you join us some Sunday. On Feb. 9 we had Dan Preedy from Spokane, WA on Feb. 9, and had a wonderful time. He even called a C-1 star tip for us.

In January we had only one dance because we went dark for Mid-Winter on the 4th Friday. We did not get to dance to Jim Hattrick that 2nd Friday because he was still recuperating from his ordeal in the hospital with multiple surgeries. Instead we had Roger Putzler call for our New Dancer Dance along with Christina Corelli who kindly substituted fro Jackie Gale who was under the weather with bronchitis. Roger and Christina always make a good duo and Roger was just right for the new dancers because he is their lesson caller here in Springfield! We had 8 new dancers out, and they all seemed to enjoy the evening very much. We know we enjoyed having them. We’re looking forward to our Luck of the Irish dance with Jim Hattrick calling and Jackie Gale cueing March 13th. We will have a baked potato bar at 7PM followed by our regular dance format, 7:30 plus, 8-10PM mainstream with no formal break.

Please come join us on a 2nd or 4th Friday. We’d love to meet you and dance with you.

On Feb. 28 we will be dark because the hall has been rented to the Eugene Opera for about 10 days. Those of you who were looking forwarding to dancing to Richard Lane again will have to wait until September or drive down to Roseburg where he calls a plus dance for Timber 8’s once a month.

We dance almost every Sunday at the Emerald Dance Center in Springfield from 5:30 to 8:00. We dance all levels. Our caller, Tim Matteson, will adjust the levels according to who shows up to dance. It's always FUN, and we always have a lot of FOOD! We encourage all square dancers to join us! The floor is cushioned and comfortable! We even have heat and air conditioning!

Please call Tim at 541-988-0399 or David at 541-520-7311 to make sure we are dancing. We are dark once in a blue moon, but we'd hate to miss you.

FYI, we are dark March 1 because the Eugene Opera Company has a rehearsal in our hall.

Keep on dancing,

Christina Corelli

By the time this news comes out, February will be behind us—many thanks to all who attended our Birthday Dance in February! It’s always a festive occasion. March will be a fun month as we welcome Spring and do some more dancing. We’re looking forward to our coast trip at Gleneden Beach Community Club and dancing both Friday and Saturday nights, the 13th and 14th. We want to mention again that all are welcome! This has been a longstanding tradition for the Corvallis Squares. For the Saturday lunch potluck there will be good humor and good food, and if you want, you can bring a joke to share! The club survived all the practices for the Showcase of Rounds at Mid-Winter and has started on beginning Fox Trot for the winter/spring season of lessons. We had one new dancer the first night and will welcome more, hopefully, the next week.

We are still reviewing previously learned rhythms in the Phase 3-4 realm of dancing and getting better each week. There is always something to pick up when dancing.

We will hold a meeting in March to vote for Federation officers, club officers and discuss future rhythms for lessons and see what else the dancers want to talk about. Come and see us and share the dance floor with the rest of us. Marilyn Schmit

We had a change of caller for our February dance. Since Leonard was gone, Thomas Buchheit stepped in and called for us. It was kind of fun to have a dance on Valentine's Day. Thank you to everyone who joined us for our club birthday.

Our competition teams have started practices and are trying their best. The kids have their fundraiser dance later this month on March 22. Please see our flyer and join us if you can. In addition to a basket raffle, calling and cueing by Leonard and Frances, the kids are offering a brunch breakfast prior to the dance. See you at a dance soon. Petrina Buchheit

Our classes are done and they provided us one couple to join our club. It’s not surprising since (for many years) the largest part of our membership has come to us from other established clubs, or from dancers who have taken a hiatus from dancing, but still remember how to dance.

We’re a well-managed club. Our board watches the ups and downs of dance attendance very carefully, and surmises why attendance may be up or down on any particular night.

In that the Oregon Federation Newsletter (OFN) is typically published early, the Chaps and Petticoats (C&P) invite Angels and New-Dancers, alike, to join us for our New Dancer MS Graduation, on Sunday, FEB 23rd from 6-8pm at the Maplewood Grange in Aurora. Help us cheer on our two (2) strong new-dancers AND watch as they “Roast” their Instructor, Scott Zinser, as an expression of appreciation! For C&P, thank goodness we did our fundraising (last year) and could continue to teach lessons regardless of how many students consistently showed.

It is an eye-open when we lose a loved one to see how much they have impacted our dancing world. We were blessed to see and feel the warmth at the Mid-Winter “Diamonds of Dance.” Showcase of Rounds - a tribute to Ken Pratt, Cuer (who passed in the early hours on JAN 1st). To hear his voice, as rounds Choreographer, filled our eyes with tears. Did you participate in the Celebration of Ken’s Life on FEB 9th? Wow, 280+ people filled the Hillsboro IOOF Hall (including Ken and Dianne’s family) and sooo many round dancers/cuers let Dianne know she was supported … we love you Dianne. Thank you, Sunset Promenaders for hosting.

Chaps and Petticoats’ 1st and 3rd MARCH dances are no-theme dances, but will be filled with Caller surprises and Round-dance fun as we welcome:

Scott Zinser & Stephanie Lozano on March 6th *

Mike Kious & Christina Corelli on March 20th * first appearance with C&P for these Caller/Cuers ...

- please turn out to support them!

Will you join us for our APRIL theme dances? Costume prizes will be awarded at our April 3rd Hippie-dance and a roasted-pig (turkey optional) dinner will be served on April 17th when we “Go Hog Wild”… see April Flyers.

It’s good news! Our caller, Jim Hattrick, is back calling and cueing for us. As was mentioned in the February issue, Jim had some serious health issues in December and January. Our club is very pleased to have him with us once again. We are extremely grateful to the community of callers and cuers who graciously stepped in to help during his illness. At Jim’s first dance back with us, January 18th, Daryl Clendenin teamed up with Jim for a truly fun night of dancing. What a pair! Craig Abercrombie continues to share time with Jim at our lessons. It is a wonderful way for our students to have experience dancing to the different voices of callers.

During February we are continuing a tradition of collecting food for a local food bank, the North Clark County Food Bank. This is just one of the three to four community oriented activities our club sponsors during the dance year.

We are looking forward to a visitation to R Square D in March. It’s always fun to attend their club and dance to Craig Abercrombie’s enthusiastic calling and Lonnie Syck’s great cueing. We will also start the fourth round of eight-week lesson sessions. We have been blessed with a terrific group of students this year. It is always exciting to see how many new students will arrive at the beginning of each session. Since we have had so many interested students, we plan to extend our lesson sessions with one additional eight-week session being added for the months of May and June. Hopefully this will allow students to complete mainstream levels and polish their skills so that they can attend dances during the summer and be ready for the fall schedules.

Our first dance in February was February 8. Since we now have many single members in our club now, we decided to have our theme dance for February focus on Friendship rather than Valentines. We celebrated the joy of friendship at that dance and also celebrated the graduation of our class. Many of these new dancers have already joined our club and were warmly welcomed. Our second dance each month is a regular dance.

Our annual beach trip is at Lincoln City March 6 and 7. Fun activities are planned. Our first dance in March celebrates “the luck of the Irish” and our first dance in April on April 11 is our 70’s dance.

Come join us.

The rambunctious Ramblers welcomed national caller Dan Preedy for our February dance, themed Okay Q-pid!. Hearts abounded in the dance hall, and their beats quickened as Mr. Preedy filled the hall with music and lighthearted energy. Highlights included his renditions of Roger Miller’s “King of the Road” and Simple Minds’ “Don’t You Forget About Me.” We were thrilled to receive visitors from Country Cut-ups, Happy Hoppers, Bachelors and Bachelorettes, and Chaps and Petticoats.

The Ramblers will be dark in March, so we can support the Puddletown Squares Rain Festival in Seattle. Speaking of dance weekends, now would be a great time to purchase tickets for the Ramblers’ annual dance weekend in the fall. Early bird pricing is available through the second weekend in March. The dance will take place at the Multnomah Arts Center October 23-25, 2020. Once again, we will have some of the world’s best callers: Anne Uebelacker (Seattle), Bill Eyler (Palm Springs), and Gary Monday (Seattle). Information is available through our website: rosetownramblers.com/scares-n-squares.

Our next monthly dance will be April 11. The gregarious Gary Monday will be migrating south from Seattle for this dance. We’ll have Advanced dancing from 4:30 to 6:30, a potluck from 6:30 to 7:30, and then we will alternate Mainstream and Plus from 7:30 to 9:30. We dance at the Oak Grove Community Center, 14496 SE Cedar Ave., Oak Grove, Oregon. We’d love to see YOU there!

Classes are going well - our September class recently graduated and started FunShops on February 20th. All graduated Mainstream dancers are invited to attend. This Mainstream FunShop is Thursdays at 6pm. We are also having a New Plus Class (FunShop) starting at 715pm on Thursdays. Come join us to refresh and build your Mainstream & Plus skills. Our Tuesday Beginner class is doing great and having a lot of fun.

Our February dances were a great time - with the Tailgate Party and Precious Heart dances. Thanks to Chuck for calling and Rikki and Bob cueing at each dance. We had quite a few in attendance for the Chili Cookoff potluck and there were lots of choices and some great chili and sides!! Thank you to the dancers who brought food!

March is the kickoff for March on Hunger and we encourage everyone to bring some canned food to donate when they attend our dances or classes in support of the local food bank. We have Phil Ramey & Sarge Glidewell for our "Can Can" dance on March 7th - with Pre Rounds starting at 7pm and Mainstream & Plus tips at 730pm. March 21st will feature Richard Lane & Bob Dingman at our Casino Royal dance. Advanced starts at 6pm and PreRounds at 7pm. There will be alternating Plus & Mainstream tips with rounds starting at 730pm. Please come and join in on the fun!!!

Boatnik is just around the corner - please get your ribbon soon. You don't want to miss this party!! Lots of fun guaranteed with the fabulous Bronc Wise and Peter(Chama) Gomez!!! Going to be a blast. See a Charlie Brown Squares Boatnik Committee member for a ribbon; send it in or contact a member for more information!

We look forward to attending some great dances and festivals in the coming months and can't wait to dance with everyone.

Again, I can’t remind you all enough. Don’t forget July at Diamond Lake in 2020. We will have a real “TRIFECTA: and a bonus with 3 callers of National Status. We will have Mike Sikorsky, Michael Kellogg and Mike Haworth with the bonus of Rikki Lobato as the featured cuer.

Come out and join us on March 13th for the next Game Night. The theme for this one is “Italian.” Make your favorite pasta dish or salad and come out to join us. We have a blast. If you don’t play Mexican Train, there is usually a game of cribbage going on. We are open to most any table game.

Classes are going well and the students are really enthusiastic. The January beginner class is doing great. Everyone is having a great time with classes. The Thursday class is graduating on March 26th. Stay tuned for more details.

The February 8th dance was a LOT OF FUN. There were a couple of surprises in the line-up of amateur callers. Our own “Caller’s Lady” was one surprise and Stan Jones was another. Both show a lot of promise.

The Stars are once again collecting stuffed animals for the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department to give to children in distress. Last year we collected and donated 200+ animals. I think we can do better. There is a tote on the stage at the Rogue Valley Square Dance Center to put the animals in. PLEASE HELP!!!

We are again going to sponsor the Alzheimer’s Benefit Dance. It will be on Sunday, June 7, 2020 from 2 to 5pm. This is a very worthy cause and hits home to a lot of us in the square dance world. All proceeds will go to Alzheimer Research. The callers & cuers are donating their time and the Stars are donating the hall. A Challenge has been issued. Last year we raised $520+ and the challenge is to double that, at the very least.

See you in a square!

The Council encourages all dancers to attend the anniversary dances of member clubs and we have four coming up. On the 22nd of February the Hoedowners will celebrate their 70th at the Aloha Grange. On February 28th the Valley River Dancers will celebrate their 20th Anniversary at the Chehalem Community Center in Newberg. On the 14th of March the Columbia River Dancers will have their 5th Anniversary Dance at the Hazel Dell Grange in Vancouver. Then on the 28th the R Square D will celebrate their 67th at the Kelso Senior Center in Kelso. See the individual club reports below for additional details.

The annual TVC Presidents Meeting & Potluck was held on the evening of January 27th. Sixty one dancers, many having just returned from Mid-Winter, attended the event honoring current and past club Presidents. Well over half of those present stood when current or previous club presidents were asked to do so. The TVC wishes to thank all the presidents of the TVC Clubs for volunteering their time and efforts into this activity we all love. TVC President, Mike St. Clair, announced the recipient of the Tualatin Valley Council “Recognition Award” for 2019. This award is presented annually for outstanding service and special contribution to the square dance community within the TVC geographical area. The TVC Recognition Award for 2019 was presented to Ken and Dianne Pratt. The award was determined before the passing of Ken Prattt on New Years Day. The moment was bittersweet and tearful as Dianne received the award on behalf of herself and her late husband.

Since the OFN is published around the 20th of February, you still have time to plan on attending the TVC fifth Saturday Dance, "Celebrate Winter Ending". It will be held at the Aloha Grange on February 29th. This dance will feature Adam Christman calling and Joyce Hooper cueing. The dance begins at 7:30 with pre rounds, then 8:00 to 10:00 mainstream with every third tip plus. This dance is co-hosted by the M 'n M's.

After being dark for one dance in January because of our support of Mid-Winter and dark another dance in February due to the cloggers taking over the Grange, I believe that March will come in like a lion for the Columbia River Dancers as we celebrate our 5th anniversary. So, plan ahead to dance with us at the Hazel Dell Grange on March 14th. Adam Christman, from Spokane, will be our caller and cuer again this year. Anyone who has danced when Adam calls knows how special it is. We will be giving out our number 5 dangle to the first fifty dancers to come through the door.

Things continue to stay hot at our March 28th dance with Jim Hattrick back with us again. Jim has recovered rather nicely from his recent hospital stay so come out and welcome him back to the CRDs.

Our lessons are starting again the first Tuesday of the month so convince you friends and neighbors to try one time. Remind them that it is nothing like they learned in elementary school. Our first lesson is free so what do they have to lose.

Vests advertising the August Oregon Summer Festival in Seaside were conspicuous in the Grand March opening of Winterfest in Albany. Twenty seven of our members attended and some even did a singing and dancing routine, wowing the crowd of course, inviting them to the Summer Festival. Support the host clubs by buying your ribbons now. If you cannot go you can sell them to someone who didn’t plan ahead.

One of our members said “This was the first year my feet didn’t hurt on the way home.” then he added sadly, “But I wish they did.” He is presently suffering with a bad hip.

Plus lessons at noon will be continuing after starting February 10th. That is the plan anyway. Even if you are a plus dancer you can always do a little brushing up and help out the new students.

Speaking of plans and how they change, Important notice of location change: Starting in March we will be dancing at the Aloha Grange at 3425 185th Ave., Beaverton, OR 97006, off TV highway.

March is famous for a couple of things: St. Patrick’s Day and Break Week for students. The Irish seem to have a good time celebrating and happy to see you celebrate too. Any excuse is a good excuse for a party and dancing with friends. However, I do not think I can handle break week with students anymore.

Keep your mind fresh by visiting other clubs. See if you can dance to a different caller and cuer. They love visitors.

During lessons our regular Plus dance is at 1:15 - 3:00 pm immediately following the noon class. Come enjoy our three great callers. We dance "Every Monday Afternoon" at Sunset Presbyterian Church 14986 NW Cornell Rd. Beaverton, OR 97229. Please check for up to date information at www.EagerBeavers.info.

January was damp, wet and soggy. Thank heavens Hoedowners had no outdoor activities planned. We did kick off 2020 with a New Year’s Eve Resolutions Dance on January 11th. The dance was a success, the New Year’s resolutions not so much.

We were dark for the 2020 Mid-Winter festival Diamonds of Dance. The Hoedowner activities began on Friday with many members donning the fluorescent green vests of the 2020 Summer Festival crew. The vests were spotted at the Summer Festival table and on the dance floors. Speaking of dance floor did you see the promotional skit for 2020 Summer Festival on Friday night? There was a girl in a bikini, a surfer dude, ocean waves, volleyball, a lifeguard, a shark, shoppers walking on the Seaside’s prom, singers and Beach Boys music, all the result of Sally Duyck’s creative talents.

On Friday evening we discovered Albany’s new, romantic spot for dinner. All 26 who attended raved about the food and ambiance. After the dance, Hoedowner’s enjoyed their usual post party event in the Hoedowner Party Room. On Saturday we saw a bit of sunshine and many hours of dancing. We were tickled to see some of our new student members enjoying the new dancer and mainstream halls. We all had a chance to dance with our own Daryl Clendenin.

For Saturday dinner we all gathered at the Cascade Grill, so close and so easy to get back to watch the Showcase of Rounds. Six of our members, Randy Lewis, Deb Olson, David Boultinghouse, Sarah Richmond, Dennis and Doreen Laughlin, were participants. We snapped our annual club photo in the mainstream hall at 8 pm. How did we close out the weekend? We gathered in the Hoedowner Party Room for snacks and beverages until the wee hours. Hope you didn’t miss a minute.

Our last new dancer lesson of the 2019-2020 season was Tuesday, January 28th. We handed out diplomas, nibbled on treats but most importantly we had our Hoedowner Poker Run. Who won? Debra Welch had worst hand which always earns a prize. High hand prize bundles included a coffee basket with a Starbucks gift card, a movie basket with four movie tickets, a square dance bundle with vintage drinking glasses (so darn cute), and an evening at home basket with puzzle and treats.

Looking ahead on March 14, we’ll have our Mr. Potato Head Dance and as shocking as it may seem, we’ll be holding a baked potato bar after the dance.

March Madness will be going on all month so on the 28th of March when we’ll have our Sport Night Dance. Come dressed in your favorite team’s gear. Soccer, football, or your favorite Little League team, we don’t care as long as they’re your favorite.

Our mainstream class graduation on January 6th was an adventure: there was dancing in the dark with flashlights, and in paper bag “overshoes” before the certificates were given. Then we enjoyed the Trivia Dance, where lots of prizes were given for a correct answer to a trivia question. Prizes included Smarties, and Uno Bars - appropriate prizes for smart answers.

Our club was dark for the Presidents Potluck and meeting so our members who are new to the square dancing world could experience how the TVC meetings are run and also meet TVC Reps and dancers from other clubs. We had the highest percentage of our members present.

Seven of our members enjoyed dancing at Mid-Winter; for some it was their first Festival Dance.

On February 3rd, we held our Ground Hog Day Dance, where ‘ground hog’ (sausages) were part of the refreshments. Our caller went through the first tip twice, but when he said, “Good morning, Oak Hills Squares” the dancers caught on to the reference to the movie “Ground Hog Day,” and enjoyed a good laugh.

Our lessons for new dancers have started, during the first hour of the dance – 6:30 to 7:30. Angels welcome.

Our March 2nd dance will be Mardi Gras theme – wear your beads and join us!

Please join TVC’s newest club on Mondays from 6:30 to 8:30. The first Monday of the month is our theme dance and continues until 9:00, with mainstream dancing to all singing calls, phase two rounds and open break.

We started out the year with 16-18 beginners, at our Wednesday night lessons. Including Plus we had 3 squares dancing. What an encouraging way to begin the year. Thank you Craig for always keeping it interesting even for those who may wish to join us as angels. A good time for the middle of the week activity.

We only had the 2nd Friday dance. Many went to Mid-Winter the last weekend of January.

March is our anniversary month. 67 YEARS!!! Please do come on Saturday March 28th to celebrate with us. Earlier in the month, on Friday 13th, Guest caller, Jim Raupp will call a B-51 dance, an opportunity for our students to enjoy an evening of just dancing. (I remember those dances, scared I would mess up everyone)It is especially nice to be able to go to a dance where the experienced dancers make you begin to feel apart of the square dancing community.

Sunset Promenaders - Link
Sunday February 9th the Sunset Promenaders hosted a celebration of life for Ken Pratt with a turnout of over 300-attending. Ken and Dianne Pratt were very active in the Northwest Round Dance world. Ken passed away suddenly on January 1st. Ken and Dianne taught round dancing for years and they were very popular because of his knowledge and skill at teaching rounds plus they made it fun with humor. We are missing him greatly, it has been great having them as our club cuer for several years.

This month our Thursday Plus Dance nights are on March 5th, and the 19th featuring Darrell Kalmbach calling, and Tami Helms cueing. The dancing starts with Intermediate Rounds from 7:00 and the Plus starting at 7:30 until 9:30 with a break after.

The Saturday Mainstream dances are the 3rd of March with a theme of “The Roaring 20’s”. And on March 21st with a theme of “Irish Fling” with baked potatoes at the break.

Mike and Julie Stout are our Mainstream caller and cuer.

All our Mainstream Dances start with Intermediate Rounds at 7:00 until 7:30. Then our Square Dances start at 7:30 until 9:30 with a Plus every third tip.

Thank you to all you visitors that come to our dances, hope to see you soon, we really appreciate it.

Tom & Janice Sminia

We had a fun group of masked dancers at our Masquerade dance! There was every imaginable kind, including several unique handmade ones.

Toe’s had so much fun at Mid-Winter Festival, several met there for dinner at Elmers.

March 6th will be a new theme for us, an “Alice in Wonderland” dance, and March 20th will be a regular dance. We’d love to see you across a square, so come on over to the Kinton Grange and dance with the Toe’s.

In January we held a fun “Cowboy Country” B-51 dance which had 42 attendees. Our Mainstream and Two Step Lessons continued, with 12 students signing up again for the second half of Mainstream, and 14 for Two Step. Also we had 13 members (almost half our club) and 10 students enjoy the Mid Winter Festival in Albany this year.

In March we plan to visit PAC’s Braids ‘n Braves in McMinnville - our cuer’s other club - for their anniversary. Watch for our two Friday night dances, “The Wearin’ o’ the Green” on the 13th and “Rat Pak Reflections” (Remember Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr?) on the 27th, with our caller Terry Halley and cuer Sandra Pinion. Looking forward to spring!

Our 20th Anniversary Dance is Friday, February 28th. We hope you will come dance and wish us a happy birthday in person and enjoy some delicious cake and ice cream as we celebrate at break. We know of at least a couple of clubs planning visitations so we are anticipating a fun night.

February 29th we are dancing ‘A’ at the Woodburn Senior Estates and we would love to have you join us.

March 13th George Hermann will be on-stage for our Plus night.

March 27th will be our Hippie Dance, so bring your dance moves and groove with us to Randy Dibble’s calling and Sherri Clark’s cueing.

The Valley River Dancers dance Plus on 2nd Fridays (Randy Dibble Calling, Guest Cuer), and Mainstream on 4th Fridays (Randy Dibble Calling, Sherri Clark Cueing) in Newberg at the Chehalem Community Center. We celebrated Cap's 93rd birthday in February. She is the oldest dancer in Roseburg and dances nearly every tip still! Several schedule changes are coming up for us in March & April. We will be dark March 14, but will have a dance March 28. In April, we will dance 1st & 3rd Saturday instead of our regular 2nd & 4th. April 4 will have guest caller Dan Nordbye. April 18 is our birthday dance with Richard Lane & Neil Koozer. Hope you can join us.
