A publication of the Oregon Federation of Square and Round Dance Clubs

Printed 20 March 2023

What is Rhythm?

Rhythm: a strong, regular repeated pattern of movement or sound. That is one of the dictionary definitions. What does rhythm have to do with square & round dancing? A whole lot.

I hear this a lot; “I’m tone deaf, that’s why I can’t keep time with the music”. Well, not so much. Tone deafness relates to pitch. You need to think about the beat. Try this: without any music playing, tap your finger; try it for a minute or so. At the end of the minute did you settle into a regular rhythm as you tapped? If you do, then you can dance to the beat of the music. If you add music and tap your finger to the beat of the music, then you are predicting when the next beat is coming. The same thing can happen with your feet.

When Callers are calling and Cuers are cueing, they are listening to the rhythm or beat of the music. They strive to match their calls and cues with that rhythm so that you, the dancer, can accomplish what they ask in time with the music. Square Dance music is typically 120 to 133 beats per minute and Round Dance music can range from 60 to 180 beats per minute. A typical walking pace is about 100 steps per minute. “I can’t move that fast”. Maybe so if you try to take big steps. I am willing to bet that as a child you were told by your parents not to shuffle your feet. When you are dancing, it is okay, even preferable to shuffle your feet. Doing so allows you to keep up with the beat since as you shuffle, you take smaller steps, and your feet are always in contact with the floor.

Keep in mind that when you are dancing, that the goal is to have a good time while dancing. Perfection is rarely ever achieved, so enjoy the journey to perfection as it is where you will be most of the time.

Sharing is caring,

Tim Keck
President

Editor's Note

Among the other news this month, remember to look at the bios for the candidates for Federation office in 2023-24. We actually have multiple candidates for several offices this year.

This is a transition year for the Federation; the board voted last year to change most of the offices to two-year terms. To make sure we have some continuity, some of the offices will be elected in odd-numbered years, and some in even-numbered years. The ballot tries to make this clear.

Our next dances will be April 29, July 29, and September 30.  Our dances start with pre-rounds at 7:00 and mainstream from 7:30 - 9:30.

Roger Putzler is teaching mainstream and plus on Tuesday nights. They will be graduating the end of February and ready to join clubs and dance, dance, dance!   Christina's new husband, Jake Westra, is learning mainstream from Roger and enjoying it.  A number of new dancers were able to attend Mid-Winter and had a blast!

Our president, Pat Cox from the coast provides equipment for our Fifth Saturday dances and is always early to set up Thanks Pat!  You and Cherie are appreciated!

Cast A Shadow - Link
CAS held two dances in January and danced as usual to recordings of Darrell Lipscomb and Bronc Wise. It is great that these national callers let us use their recordings so we can keep up on advanced dancing. It is good that we get a chance to hone our skills as many of us went to Mid-Winter Festival this year and had the great opportunity to dance with dancers from all over the Northwest including one from Montana. Fred Beisse reported below:

We had a good representation of Cast A Shadow dancers at the Mid-Winter Festival in Albany over the weekend: Gaynor, Chris, Lorna, Charlotte, Cheryl (and Tim), Kaynor, Kathleen and Fred.  The group enjoyed dancing A2 to featured caller Justin Russell, as well as Randy Dibble, Jack Hardin, and Don Wood, among others.  The turnout was up over the last couple of years and the festival felt like it was getting back to normal levels of participation with as many as 4 squares in the  Advanced Hall.

We plan to continue dancing twice a month often on the second and fourth Sunday but occasionally on the 1st and 3rd. Please check our tentative schedule on our website at cas-sd.yolasite.com. Please call Fred at 458-221-3564 or Gaynor at (541) 4149 to be sure we have mustered a square and will be dancing on the proposed dates in Hall B at the Emerald Square Dance Center..

Keep on dancing,

Gaynor Hintz

We have not held a dance since the end of November , the day after Thanksgiving. However, as of February when we are holding our 59th Birthday danced on Feb. 24, we will be back to our normal 4th Friday schedule.

We dance at the Emerald Square Dance Center in Springfield on 20th and Yolanda in Hall A from 7:30 to 10PM. We start with 15 minutes of pre-r9unds and 15 minutes of plus and at 8 we begin our mainstream with rounds in between tips. Jim Hattrick always calls a lively dance along with our cuer Jackie Gale, who always does such great rounds for us.. We are so lucky to have these two wonderful people call and cue for us.

Please come join us for a terrific time.

We are back to our regular dances from 4 - 6 each Sunday with our caller, Tim Matteson.  Everyone is welcome.  All our dances are casual.  Tim calls all levels and helps beginners out too by giving them floor time to figure out their latest moves.

So, please join us.  It would be wise to call our president, David Lajoie at 541-520-7311 to make sure we are dancing.  We shouldn't have any dark Sundays starting in February, but one never knows.  We dance in Hall A at the Emerald Dance Center, 2095 Yolanda in Springfield.  The floor is cushioned, and we have heat in the winter and air conditioning in the summer.

We are back to our usual schedule of the second and third Saturdays.  We have Plus from 7:00 - 7:30 and then Mainstream with rounds.  Mike Kious is still very sore and may be undergoing surgery to relieve the pain.  This is all from the accident back in September of 2022.  Roger Putzler has subbed for Mike as well as Mike's grandpa, George Hermann.  We continue to keep Mike and Camille too, in our thoughts and prayers.

We had a ZOOM meeting with a huge number of the club members present.  A lot of business was taken care of.  Todd Jensen presided from Arizona.

Ron Gates, our vice-president, is in charge when our president Todd Jensen, is south.  Thanks Ron!  Todd should be back soon as it's starting to get hot down in Arizona!  Both of these dancers are appreciated more than they can imagine!

Please join us the second and third Saturdays at the Emerald Dance Center.  7:00 - Plus and mainstream with rounds starting at 7:30.   We have some themed dances coming up.  February 18 is Academy Awards Dance.  March 11 is an Irish Shindig.

We are inviting other clubs to join us in Florence for our annual Spring Campout March 23 - 26.  Please call Marvin Baker at 541-913-7310 or Kevin Heine at 503-318-5582 for details.  Campouts are always FUN!  You are all invited!

The month of March will be bittersweet for the club since George Hermann and Molly Fairly are both retiring after the second dance of the month. George will become a full time care giver for Patty and Molly is pregnant with her second child, a baby girl. Their Callerlab and Roundalab licenses run out on March 31.

We will have our 63rd birthday dance and Farewell party on the second Saturday of the month with time roast George sometime during the evening. A flyer will follow.

Come and join us as we have another birthday and say Farewell. Cake and ice cream will be served. We would love to see you there.

There will guest callers and cuers for April through July and then a vote will be taken for replacements.

Our tango class continues with a small attendance but we keep going. There are no special dances planned in the near future, but stay tuned for any last minute changes.

Randy and Debbie are on the program for WASCA in the Washington, DC area later in the month. They are getting ready with some new dances submitted by the committee.

Hope you got to see their jive dance at Mid-Winter. It was really good.

Chaps & Petticoats - Link
Six Chaps and Petticoats members attended the Valley River Dancers ‘LAST’ dance on February 10th in Newberg at the Chehalem Community Center. All total, there were six squares dancing to Randy Dibble calling and the floor was covered in Round dancers, with Leonard Snodgrass cueing. The dance was super fun too, a great turnout (three Split-the-Pots - Randy won one), though bittersweet that it was goodbye.

Nearly a square of C & P members attended the Rosetown Ramblers forty year (40th) Anniversary dance on February 11th at Oak Grove Community Center with National Caller, Mike Kellogg. One member was awarded, by President Jeff Knapp, a simulated Ruby Paperweight, as a token of Rick’s 40 years of service and membership ... a member for as long as the Club is old. WOW! It was a super turnout of 9-squares total. The Portland Area Council has encouraged Club visitations to Anniversary dances and Country Cut-Ups was recognized with the greatest number of members in attendance at this dance.

Chaps & Petticoats graduated four MS-students on Sunday, February 12th. In honor of Super Bowl Sunday, the students “roasted” their instructor, Scott Zinser, by dressing him up as a Cheerleader: make-up was applied, skirt and petticoat was worn and pom-poms provided - he then cheered us on (Look for pictures in the OFN).

Our Anniversary dance was the Flintstone Dance. Fifty three (53+) dancers attended, on February 17th - WOW, that was six-squares dancing including six PAC Clubs represented. Many dancers dressed in costume and prizes were awarded: Male winner was Jim Schira, Mary Thierl took the female gift & Robert & Young Lumsden took the Couple’s award. Thank you Darrell Kalmbach and Tami Helms for your music adaptations and spirit given to our theme!

We hope that you can join us for two no-theme dances at Maplewood Grange: March 3rd (Scott Zinser and Stephanie Lozano, Cuer) and March 17th (Renee Ruud and Connie Clark, Cuer).

Happy Feet,

Betty Chipps

The wearing of the green will be happening at the Boring Barn as we dance 1st

Saturday to Terry Halley and Julie Stiers. Then 4th Saturday, we will be dancing to Scott Zinser and Tami Helms.

We are enjoying introducing our new students to our dances. In February, after this writing we will be graduating 4 new dancers. Two of them braved Mid-Winter, so we had about 25 Cut-Ups representing usthere. Great fun!

In April, we will be holding a weekend dance festival, appropriately called Spring Fling. The national caller, Andy Allemao, will be featured and our own local Tami Helms, will be cueing. It will be held April 28-30 at the Boring Barn and will replace our 5th Saturday dance. This should be a great dance, so

get your ticket from Young Lumsden or Patti Smith, if you haven't signed up already! There will be mainstream dances, plus dances, and a hex teach session. For full details, check out the flyer on the OFN.

Rosetown Ramblers - Link
Portland’s Rosetown Ramblers held our 40th Anniversary Dance on February 11, 2023, at the Oak Grove Community Center. The dance theme was Rubies, Rainbows, and Roses, and the evening was a tremendous success.

We welcomed 7 squares of dancers, including 6 squares dancing the Plus program. Clubs represented at the dance included:

◦ Country Cut-ups (brought 10 dancers and took home a Ramblers banner)

◦ Happy Hoppers

◦ Chaps & Petticoats

◦ Oaky Doaks Alumni

◦ Tri-Squares

◦ M&Ms

◦ Valley Squares

◦ Puddletown Squares (Seattle)

◦ El Camino Reelers (Palo Alto, CA)

◦ Suncoast Squares (St. Petersburg, FL)

Michael Kellogg called this dance with his usual panache.

For this special evening, we displayed Ramblers banners over the years, photo albums, a club history, and some vintage club attire. We also presented 40-year Rambler member Rick Hawes with a “ruby” paperweight and a red climbing rose (literally a Rosetown rambler!).

Carol Williamson took home the door prize—another “ruby” paperweight—which was fitting because she and Danny planned to celebrate their 57th wedding anniversary the next day. Two anniversaries in one weekend!

Many dancers got into the dance theme by wearing ruby, rainbow, and/or rose-themed finery. Photos are included in a separate section of this OFN.

The Ramblers sincerely appreciate all the support from other clubs for this dance and look forward to dancing for another 40 years!

Jeff Knapp, President

SSD classes are going well, with about 16 new dancers participating. We hope they will continue and keep their enthusiasm going. Mainstream & Plus workshops/classes are continuing on Thursdays with a nice turnout.

Our next dance is on March 4th with Chuck calling. This will be an SSD/Mainstream dance. No cuer/rounds for this event. March 10th will be an SSD dance from 630-830pm with Chuck. On March 18th, Chuck and Sarge Glidewell will call/cue our "Wear Your Green, Let Your Laugh Be Seen" dance. We are so thankful for the support of our dancers and hope to see you at any/all of these dances.

We will be dark for our Saturday dances in April - so we can support the Buckeroo birthday dance and the Pear Blossom Festival. There will be a special Sunday dance on April 30th from 3-6 pm with Chuck and Dean Black calling. No rounds at this dance -but it should be a great time.

Looking to May we have 2 very special events. The first is May 20th with a celebration of Arizona Bill's 100th heavenly birthday. This is a dance he had planned and Dean Black will call and Rikki will be cueing - both as requested by Bill. Should be a very memorable nite. This dance is FREE to all and donation jars will be set out to help pay the expenses of hall/caller & cuer. The flyer is in OFN under special dances.

Also in May is the Boatnik Festival. This year's talented caller and cuer are Joe Saltel and Randy/Marie Preskitt. It's always a wonderful weekend and a great party. There is still time to get in at the Pre-Registration rate. Look for the flyer under special dances.

We hope to see you at a future dance!

The TVC wishes to extend congratulations to the recipients of the 2023 Randall Award, Dave & Patty Cooper. Awarded at the Mid Winter Festival, this is the highest honor the Oregon Federation can bestow on a square dancer. Named for past Federation president Buddy Randall, the award is intended to honor those dancers who have done great service for the Oregon Federation and for square dancing in Oregon, and especially those who work behind the scenes where recognition is so rare.

Each year the Council holds a TVC Presidents Meeting to honor current and past club Presidents. A tradition for 29 years beginning in 1994, the TVC Recognition Award has been presented to an individual or couple for outstanding service and significant contribution to the square dancing community. TVC President Ursula Kuhn said, "In light of the energy, joy, accountability and uncountable hours of service, the TVC presents the 2022 TVC Recognition award to Dale and Linda Brabham of the Tri Squares."

The Council highly recommends that all TVC dancers attend the anniversary dances held by other member clubs. On March 11th the Columbia River Dancers will celebrate their 8th anniversary. See their report below for details. Since the OFN is published about the 20th of the month, you still have time to plan on attending the Hoedowners 73rd anniversary on February 25th.

Who would have thought that eight years would pass so quickly. March 11th will mark the anniversary of the Columbia River Dancers eighth year of square and round dancing in the Vancouver area. The dance calls for a special caller and a change in days. We will have Adam Christman from Spokane calling and we are changing our first March dance day from Friday the 3rd to Saturday March 11. It looks to be a real blast. We invite all to come and celebrate with us.

Jim will call and cue our second dance, back again to our regular third Friday night, the 17th. There has been a rumor that the CRDs are thinking about going to one dance a month. I would like to put that rumor to rest by saying that the club has never considered doing any such thing. We are slowly building our club back after COVID and look forward to having two dances a month for the future. See you all in a square.

Does everyone love January; cold weather, National Swiss Cheese Day, Dress up your Pet Day? The list goes on and on. None of which I celebrate although I’m considering January 19th which is National Popcorn Day. Here in Oregon, for dance enthusiasts, we all look forward to Mid-Winter Festival. January is also the time of year when we miss all our snowbirds who headed south for the winter. We can’t wait for their spring return!

Hoedowners have a tradition of holding our Annual Black and White Sparkle Dance in January to welcome the new year. This year it fell on January 14th. The sparkly decorations were up, and the mirror ball was spinning. Thanks to all who attended. I can’t decide who won; sequins or rhinestones but the dance floor was full.

Hoedowner question of the month: How many states have square dancing as their official state dance?

Mid-Winter is a one-of-a-kind dance festival. Days of dancing, shopping, eating, and visiting. Attendance showed that Covid didn’t win. Hoedowners had a large group in attendance and dined together on Saturday night at the Cascade Grill. Did we see you across a square?

Join us in March on the 11th and the 25th for our regularly scheduled dances..

The Oak Hills Squares continue to meet every Monday from 6.30-8.30pm at the Oak Hills Gym on NW 153rd Ave in Beaverton. Our caller is the amazing Mark Wheeler.

Most Mondays we have 2 squares dancing and are always excited to have visitors and get up to 3 squares.

We had a lot of fun going on a club trip to the Valley Squares dance and are planning to visit a lot more clubs and dances.

We are in the process of planning out First Anniversary dance, the initial one was cancelled due to Covid. It will hopefully be on June 17th, and we will keep everyone updated as plans are finalized.

As always we encourage visitors to stop by and join us on a Monday evening.

A baked potato bar will be served after the dance. it should be a super fun night so wear your green and come dance with us!

In January, John Semm and the club celebrated his 75th birthday with a very full hall, about 7 squares! it was a very fun night with Darrell Kalmbach calling and Jeanine Norden cuing. We thank John and Leslie for hosting such a wonderful party! A good time was had by all.

The weekend of January 27-29 was the Mid-Winter Festival dance in Albany. About 20 Sunset Promenaders there for all or part of the weekend. We had dinner together at the Sizzler before the showcase of rounds on Saturday and then were treated during the showcase to some excellent dancers including a dance with quite a number of Promenaders! Tami Helms and Tim Keck did an excellent waltz, Nancy & Darby and Dennis & Doreen also treated us with their beautiful dancing.

In January our Mainstream lessons continued well. On the 13th we had a great B51 dance “Cowboy Country”. Then, on the 23rd at the annual TVC Presidents’ Dinner, our members Dale and Linda Brabham received the TVC Recognition Award for all their years of service to square dancing. Also, ten of our members attended the MidWinter Festival in Albany.

In March we’re visiting the Country Cut-Ups, along with our caller Terry Halley. It’s been a long time since we did any cutting up in Boring! We’re having two dances at our “new” Kinton Grange”: March 10th “A Bit ‘O the Irish”, and on the 24th “Spring It Forward” where we accept donations for the Good Neighbor Center in Tigard once again. Both dances begin at 7:00 with Plus and PreRounds; and 7:30 for Mainstream, Rounds and 3rd tip Plus. (Our website will show any masking requirements that may come up.) Terry Halley is calling for both dances, with Connie Clark cueing on the 10th and Julie Stiers cueing on the 24th. (Sandra Pinion is on new baby duty.) Also, on March 12th it’s graduation day for our 12 students! Hooray!

Valley River Dancers
The Valley River Dancers celebrated their 22nd Anniversary at their final dance on Friday, February 10th, and would like to thank the visitors to our club over the years. We would like to thank our dynamic duo -- Randy Dibble, our caller for many years, and Leonard Snodgrass, our cuer.  We appreciate the efforts of the club officers who kept us going these past couple of years. Rather than 'Goodbye,' how about we say, 'See you soon across a square somewhere'.

We are dancing again after a winter hiatus. Our dances are held weekly on Tuesdays from 4:00 to 6:00 at the Elks Lodge in Tillamook. We are using the hall upstairs. Our caller/cuer is Lane Clem. It is a good idea to call before you make the trip to see if we have enough folks for a square. For up to date information see: www.wavesteppers.org. (see above link)
