A publication of the Oregon Federation of Square and Round Dance Clubs

Printed 20 April 2023
President's Corner

Are we a Family?

When we dance in a square or as a couple, we can be considered family during that tip or dance. While we are dancing in the square or as a couple, it is in your best interest to cooperate with each other during that short 10 minutes.

Keep in mind that almost no-one has the same level of experience that you do. Some have more & some have less experience. We will always be learning & teaching at the same time. Keeping this in mind will enhance your overall enjoyment that you are together as a family.

Do families always get along? Sometimes not, but mostly so. If you are looking for a fight, then you will probably find one, however, once the conflict is over, you are still a family and hopefully you move on.

Dancing is a social activity that involves more than just dancing. We all have the need to feel like we belong. When we are not on the floor dancing, we are socializing with others. While doing that, look around to see who is new to the dance or may be alone. It is worth an ‘ask’ to invite them to be part of our family for the night. Celebrate the differences between the people that you meet. Everyone that you may meet have life experiences that may be different than yours as well as ones that you may share. There are times when people may not want to socialize; you need to respect that too.

We come to a dance with a common goal in mind, to relax & enjoy ourselves by doing an activity that takes us away from the stresses of everyday life even if for a short period of time.

Sharing is caring,
Tim Keck
President

Our next dances will be April 29, July 29, and September 30.  Our dances start with pre-rounds at 7:00 and mainstream from 7:30 - 9:30.

Roger Putzler's new dancer class graduated the end of February.  Christina's new husband, Jake Westra, and other newly graduated dancers have been out and about dancing with various clubs and joining a club or two.

Our president, Pat Cox and one of our members, Mike Kious, are both candidates for a state office.  Pat's wife, Cherie, is also running for a state office.  It's heart-warming to know that people are willing to run for office.  We wish everyone good luck.

In February we were only able to dance one time on the second Sunday since our illustrious leader came down with COVID shortly after our first dance and needed time to recuperate. We hope in March that we’ll dance both the 2nd and 4th Sundays.

We normally only have one square with several sitting out. Fred keeps the recorded tips short so that people can rotate in and out frequently. He always chooses great callers to dance to, like Darryl Lipscomb and Bronc Wise. We have a lot of fun and the feeling is that we are once more back to dancing at our normal level. It took quite a while to bounce back after ceasing to dance for two years. I know that I had a great time in January at Mid-Winter and had no difficulty with the national callers there. Please come join us if you are in the area, but be sure to call Fred Beisse at 458-221-3564 or Gaynor Hintz at 541-741-4149 to know whether we are dancing any given Sunday. If you want to dance with us regularly, get on Fred’s email list. The more the merrier!

We had such a wonderful 59th birthday dance on Fr4iday, Feb. 24. Hard to believe our eyes --five squares on the floor! We hadn’t seen that since the fall of 2021. Last night we had visitors from the IWW (Rickreal), Buckeroos, Timber 8’s, Lebanon Square Circlers, Sweet Home Squarenaders, our sister club, the Whirl-A-Ways as well as free agents and new dancers not yet affiliated with a club.

I took some photos early on before all our visitors had arrived (see photo section). Thank you to all the Single Trees who came out in support, many of whom wore their green and white for the first time to a birthday dance (we used to dance close to Valentine’s Day so red and white or pink and white were more appropriaqte).

Jim Hattrick was in the hospital so Mark Wheeler called the whole dance for us. He has a really nice personality and singing voice and his calling is great. He has learned a lot from Jim over the years. He noticed we had some new dancers on the floor so went over calls which seemed to be giving them some problems. He’ll be filling in for Jim on March 24th as well. We hope Jim gets on his feet again soon.

In March we made a visitation to IWW to wish them a happy birthday and to wish George Hermann a fond farewell. He has been one of our favorite guest callers over the years and will b e greatly missed.

Our club president, Larry Reetz had to miss our birthday dance as he was having health issues. He ended up in the hospital with kidney stones. This left his wife Carol without a caregiver. Thank you to Christina Corelli and other square dancers who volunteered to help watch her. We hope Larry gets back on his feet soon too.

Meanwhile, we will dance on the 4th Fridays whenever possible (not a holiday weekend (May) or Mid-Winter weekend (January). We dance at the Emerald Square Dance Center at 2095 Yolanda in Springfield from 7:30 to 10PM (first half hour pre-rounds and a plus tip). Rounds are cued by the great Jackie Gale! Please come join us.

See you in a square.

We are back to our regular Sunday dances from 4 - 6 each Sunday with our caller, Tim Matteson.  Everyone is welcome.  All our dances are casual.  Tim calls all levels and helps us if there are any figures giving us fits.  The new dancer class has graduated and have been invited to join us Sundays at 4:00.

Our caller came down with COVID so we were dark a couple of Sundays in February.  Of course he couldn't work or call but is back to work and back to calling for us.  Having the vaccine sure made a difference.  We're so glad Tim is back and feeling good!

So, please join us.  It would be wise to call our president, David Lajoie at 541-520-7311 to make sure we are dancing.  We shouldn't have any dark Sundays, but one never knows.  We dance in Hall A at the Emerald Dance Center, 2095 Yolanda in Springfield.  The floor is cushioned, and we have heat in the winter and air conditioning in the summer.

We are back to our usual schedule of the second and third Saturdays.  We have Plus from 7:00 - 7:30 and then Mainstream with rounds.  Mike Kious is still very sore and may be undergoing surgery to relieve the pain.  This is all from the accident back in September of 2022.

We went dark March 11 to attend Independence Wagon Wheelers in Rickreall where Mike's grandpa, George Hermann, was calling his last dance.  George has given up his calling license after many years.  His wife, Patty, cued for several clubs and has health issues.  George will be staying home with Patty.  Those two are a fine example of true love and caring.  Patty has not been able to cue for a while now.  We miss her and will miss George a lot.  George didn't know we went dark so his grandson and the rest of our club could attend his last dance to show support and love.  Surprise George!

Ron Gates, our vice-president, is in charge when our president Todd Jensen, is south.  Thanks Ron!  Todd should be back soon as it's starting to get hot down in Arizona!  Both of these dancers are appreciated more than they can imagine!

Please join us the second and third Saturdays at the Emerald Dance Center.  7:00 - Plus and mainstream with rounds starting at 7:30.   We have some themed dances coming up.  March 18 is a St. Patrick's Day Dance, Irish Shindig.

We had a lot of folks dress up in “bling-y” clothes for our Academy Awards Dance in Februaqry.  There was a lot of sparkle, fur, suits, etc.  It was exciting and fun!

We are inviting other clubs to join us in Florence for our annual Spring Campout March 23 - 26.  Please call Marvin Baker at 541-913-7310 or Kevin Heine at 503-318-5582 for details.  Campouts are always FUN!  You are all invited!

The Cherry City Cloggers are still enjoying being back on the dance floor and seeing our club once again growing. With the new people that joined our club after completing their lessons, we presently have a fairly full class of beginners, afternoon cloggers at the 4:00 session and a fairly full class for our intermediate to advanced level. Some of our members spend as much as three hours each Tuesday evening clogging as they attend all three sessions. We are just beginning the process of deciding which dances will be included in our demo list this year as well as beginning to schedule the venues at which we will be dancing.

We can look back at March with some good news: our Mainstream students graduated (thank you, Sandy!) and the following weekend we were able to resume our longtime tradition of having a coast trip to Gleneden Beach! Also on our schedule was a new event, the International Butterfly Dance, which as of this writing was to be held on March 25. In April we continue dancing and look forward to seeing you on the dance floor!

Our club said goodbye to George Hermann and Molly Fairly at our last dance on March 11. It was also our 63rd birthday and we had visitations from a few clubs to be part of the farewell occasion. Birthday cake, ice cream, lots of good wishes and some tears, to bring the night to a close.

A list of guest callers and cuers has been released to the club members and some are interested in auditioning, so April, May, and June will see an assortment of guests. Come and listen in to see who is auditioning to be our new caller and new cuer. A good variety to pick from. We will vote each week and then audition some finalists in July.

April is also the club’s visit to the coast for Koast Krash. A weekend in Yachats to have some down time and visit, eat, go shopping and whatever else can be found to be done. The theme is Hawaiian this year. Looking forward to pictures.

The club continues with Tango class, and we are making progress in the line of steps that are included on the list. Slowly but surely, we will make it.

We had a week off due to the snow and the first night in March looked iffy. Snow was falling as I started to write this article.

One of our groups brought homemade cake and we celebrated birthdays for January, February, and March.

Our cuer, Randy Lewis and his partner, Debbie Olson, are headed to Virginia for the WASCA Festival. They are part of the cueing crew along with the Preskitt’s, and the Garza’s. Several callers also are scheduled. A big weekend back East.

Come and join us for a fun evening of dancing and socializing!

Our February Dances were our Annual Wear Red Dance on February 3 and our February 17 Dance was well attended as well. Six squares on the floor!

March brought us three dances! On March 3, our Hobo Dance was a great success as we had five squares on the floor and four squares for the half hour of Plus.

For refreshments, Lanie Rickard made three absolutely delicious Hobo stews, and club members added freshly made sourdough bread and rolls, delicious pies and cakes.

March 17 is our St. Patrick's Day Dance so wear your green and come join the fun. Guest Cuer will be Rikki Lobato. March 31 will be our 5th Friday Plus dance with guest Caller Darrell Kalmbach.

Thank you to everyone who came to our Fundraiser Dance. We had a great turnout and raised $2,250 for the night. Ian Craig and Julie Stiers did a great job as our caller and cuer mc's. We had several of our youth callers and cuers appear as well.

The winners of the raffles were: Fishing Trip - Bob Wachter; Quilts: Louie Fisher won the blue quilt and KC Curtis won the square dancer’s quilt; Cash: Trisha Cardon, Vicente Rodriges and Julia Buchheit. We had different youth draw the winners for each raffle.

Our new 2-Step class has almost 20 couples each week. Some of these are new dancers who have not yet taken square dance or other round dance lessons.

We are getting close to our fundraising goal. Thank you to everyone for helping us! We also received a sponsorship from John's Waterproofing in Silverton as well as a griddle/grill for our silent auction.

Chaps & Petticoats - Link
Independence Wagon Wheelers (IWW) in Rickreall held a Special Dance on March 11th to honor their caller, George Hermann (retiring), and cuers (past and present), Patty Hermann and Molly Fairly. A handful of Chaps and Petticoats turned out, and we were so glad to be a part of the 15 squares on the floor. It reminded us of square dancing during the golden years. IWW served a banquet and roasted their Caller/Cuer. What a heart-warming and memorable time!

We hope you will join the Chaps and Petticoats for two upcoming theme dances at Maplewood Grange in Aurora:

April 7: Hippie Dance (Scott Zinser, Caller, and Mark McDonald, Cuer), opens with Plus at 7:30 pm and continues from 8-10 pm with Mainstream and Rounds.

April 21: Our first-ever Hillbilly Dance is from 7:30-10 pm (Mark Wheeler, Caller, and Tom Klug (Central Oregon), Cuer).

The Rosetown Ramblers celebrated Women’s History Month with our Purple Party on March 11 at the Oak Grove Community Club. All manner of purple finery and regalia were on display. Our next dance will be our Spring Fling on April 8, with Chuck Simpkins heading north from Grants Pass to call for us. We alternate Social Square Dance (Mainstream) and Plus tips from 7 to 9:30 at the Oak Grove Community Club, 14496 SE Cedar Ave., Oak Grove.

Tualatin Valley Council - Link
The February TVC meeting presided by TVC President Ursula Kuhn was held via Zoom with 27 attendees. Among the attendees was Tim Keck, President of the Oregon Federation. Several of our Council clubs have reported good class sizes and progress. There was some encouraging news from the delegate reports, with many clubs holding successful Mainstream lessons. There was also a discussion about the TVC taking over “Dancing Under the Stars” now that Valley River Dancers has ceased operations. Delegates were asked to poll their clubs.

The TVC is looking for a new Vice President, and citing commitments that are requiring more of her time, Tammy LeBlanc, TVC Treasurer is stepping down. Election of Council officers is held at the May meeting. Nominations must be submitted before then. Those elected take office in June.

The TVC fifth Saturday Dance will be held at the Kinton Grange on Saturday, April 29th. The Theme is Spring Fling, Terry Halley will be calling and Julie Stiers will be Cueing. Pre Rounds start at 7p.m. and Mainstream with rounds start at 7:30 p.m. This is a fund raiser for the Silver City teens. The proceeds and donations will be going to the kids, to help support their trip to Auburn, WA. All clubs are being asked to donate a raffle basket.

The Council encourages all dancers to attend Anniversary dances. It is important to support our dancing community. Coming in April will be two anniversaries. On April 14th, R Square D's 70th anniversary dance will be held in Kelso with Craig Abercrombie calling and Susan Healea cueing. Then on April 17th, the Eager Beavers are celebrating their 48th Anniversary at the Aloha Grange featuring caller Darrell Kalmbach and cuer Jeanine Norden. See their respective reports below.

Square dancers in the TVC may not be aware that our club caller, Jim Hattrick has taken a serous fall and has ended up in the hospital. Jim fell while at home and will be spending some time in recovery and physical therapy.

Jim has called square dances all over and most of us have danced to his calling. If you and/or your club would like to let him know you are thinking and praying for him a get-well card, I am sure, would help boost his moral. If you would like to send a card or a note, his home address is 115 NW 104th St, Vancouver WA 98685. Personally, I would like to encourage everyone to let him know he is missed.

That being said, things with the Columbia River Dancers have been shuffled around with dancing and lessons continuing. A big thank you for Mark Wheeler and Daryl Clendenin for stepping in.

Mark will be calling our first April dance on the 7th and Daryl will be calling on the 21st. Daryl has also agreed to do our square dance lessons for now.

We are continuing to have beginner and mainstream lessons on Sundays, beginning at 6 PM with Daryl doing the teaching. We have put our round dance lessons on hold while we get things straightened out.

Hoedowners - Link
Well, February 2023 is in our memory books and probably in your photo album too. Our February 11th Love is in the Air Dance went off without a hitch, but disaster was lurking. I’m sorry, we were born and raised in Montana, and I only recall one sneaker snow storm like we had this last week. I’m sure everyone has a story or two. As for us, we had a flight out on Tuesday, the 21st. By the time our flight was to depart at 3, both the airport and Park and Fly were closed. We had to sleep in the airport, entertain ourselves by watching stuck luggage carts and snowplows on the runways. The food was great until they ran out. We flew to Seattle Wednesday morning and onto Santa Ana Wednesday night. Our luggage arrived on Friday. On a high note, everyone was in good spirits, we saw a lot of tired people but no negativity. Do you have stories to share or was it a Netflix-Hulu kind of week? Of course, the square dance cancellations started early in the week. Hoedowners held out as long as we could but cancelled our Anniversary Dance mid-morning on Saturday the 25th. Our first ever snow and ice cancellation in the month February.

Hoedowner question of the month: Who starred in the movie “Square Dance”?

April promises milder weather and a bit of sunshine. I know Hoedowners are counting on it. April 8th will be the famous Hoedowner Anniversary Dance. Alert: it’s also Sally Duyck's birthday. On April 22nd it will be our Spring Colors Dance. Let’s make the dance floor look like spring flowers in bloom.

R Square D had a fantastic Valentine Dance with seven squares of dancers. Craig’s energy was contagious and his music was great!

Our lessons continue on Wednesday evenings at Kelso Senior Center. Those who completed the mainstream class in December are attending lessons again in order to reinforce what they learned and to help with this class. They are also attending “new dancer” dances as well as our own dances.

R Square D turns 70 this year! We are celebrating with an anniversary dance on Friday, April 14th. Craig Abercrombie is our caller and Susan Healea will be cueing this dance. Please join us for a fun evening!

We will be dark on April 22nd to support the Spring Sashay in Yakima that weekend.

Thursday, April 6th & April 20th Plus dances will be held with Darrell Kalmbach calling and Tami Helm cueing.

The club voted on our new mainstream caller and cuer at a special meeting held on March 5th. Darrell Kalmbach was selected as caller and Tami Helms as cuer. We are planning a special dance on April 1st to celebrate! Both of our April dances will be at class level so our students can come and join in the fun.

Several members are planning to dance with the Eager Beavers for their 48th Anniversary dance on April 17th.

Dance classes continue on Sunday's at 2:00 with Darrell Kalmbach calling/teaching. The class is scheduled to graduate at the end of April.

The best thing that happened in February for the Promenaders is that we began square dancing lessons. We have quite a few new students and they are very enthusiastic! Snow hit us unexpectedly and hard the last of February which caused us to cancel a dance and visitation. Hopefully, spring is around the corner now!

February was kind of a crazy month for sure, because both of our dances were cancelled. On the 10th we cancelled in favor of attending the final dance for the Valley River club (sorry to see them go!) and on the 24th the unexpected snowfall got us. Since that night was to be our big anchor dance, the “Mardi Gras Masquerade Ball”, we rescheduled it for March 24th. Even still, seven of us were able to make a visitation to the Valley Squares on February 3rd, and they kindly gave us a banner - the first one since before Covid I think! Our lessons continued well with 12 students. Also our board donated $200 to the Silver City Squares Youth fundraiser, to help them participate in the Pacific Northwest Teen Square Dance Festival.

In April we will be DARK on the 14th due to a bazaar at the Kinton Grange. So we're having two visitations this month, one to the Hoedowners' Anniversary Dance on the 8th and the other to see what's happening at the Chaps & Petticoats' new “Hillbilly Dance” on the 21st. We sure hope you'll join us for our own one-and-only dance on April 28th "Grace Notes" with Terry Halley calling Gospel and all singing-calls, and Julie Stiers cueing, substituting for Sandra Pinion who is on new-baby duty.

February dances were great. We invited our class to come to our February 18th dance and we danced class level. Everyone had a great time. On Tuesday, February 28th we had to cancel our class due to snow and ice.

April 7th we will be DARK as it is Good Friday and Easter weekend. April 15th we will be back to our regular dance night with our class invited, so class level, 7-9:30 pm with Scott Zinser calling and Connie Clark cueing.

Come join us and if your club has classes, invite your students as well, it's good for them to dance with other callers.

Because of several comments from our dancers we have begun dancing at a new venue, the Tillamook Library. Our dances are held weekly on Tuesdays from 4:00 to 6:00. Previously we danced at the Elks Lodge in the hall upstairs. The problem was the stairs. Our caller/cuer is Lane Clem. It is a good idea to call before you make the trip to see if we have enough folks for a square. For up to date information see: www.wavesteppers.org. (see above link)
