HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

It is hard to believe that it is 2024 already! And that Mid-Winter Festival is just a few weeks away. It is looking to be a good crowd this year – come join the fun.

A couple of things that no one ever seems to remember and always forget to tell new dancers:

  1. Every caller and cuer sounds different. They also all have different equipment and set up at a hall differently. Every hall sounds different and EVERY HALL has at least one spot where it is very difficult to hear. BEFORE complaining that you can’t hear (or that the caller/cuer isn’t loud enough/isn’t good/isn’t clear/or whatever) try dancing in a different spot in the hall. Also try dancing in a different position in a square. Moving around the hall will let you try out the sound in other spots and you just might find out that you can hear great in a certain corner or in the middle of the hall. You might find that you can hear better as a side or as a head. Example: in our hall I find that I have the most difficulty hearing clearly in the right-hand front corner in the head #1 position and I hear the best when I am in the back center square in the head #3 position.

  2. There are several moves with different types of handholds/hand touches. Not every move is the same and not every dancer thinks to be easy/quick to release hands if they have not been specifically told to do so as they learn each move. Please remember that it is not always the new dancer who forgets to let go – there are angels who also forget. We all need to remember to let go of hands when we need to do so.

  3. The more we talk to each other in a square or as partners in a round, the less we and our fellow dancers can/will hear.

  4. The louder the conversations at the edges of the dance floor, the harder it is for the dancers to hear a caller/cuer.

Going further into this year and as we have the opportunity for more special dances and larger Festivals WE ALL need to pay attention to some things.

  1. Be aware of our own dance style. Do we each need to adjust our personal style to match with others in a square?

  2. Be aware of who is in the square with you. Are you in with all newer dancers? Are you in with someone who cannot handle being swung or twirled? If they are wearing a DON’T TWIRL ME badge – OBEY IT! Are you in a square where not everyone is able to move at the same speed? Some squares will not be able to handle some styles of fooling around. YOU as an individual dancer need to be able to be aware if the square you are in at any time can handle someone being a little crazy with their fun.

  3. There will be squares in your dancing lifetime that can handle any and all wildness/crazy style/goofing around. There will also be squares where you will have to dance completely by definition with no extra frills/flares/swings/twirls added. Most of the time, the square you are in will be somewhere between the two extremes.

  4. Round dancers – if you are dancing with someone who is not your regular partner, please try to adjust your stride to match closer with your current partner. We should also adjust our personal style in rounds to the level of our current partner.

One of the most important things for everyone to remember and adjust for: we are here to have fun. We might need to adjust our style so that we can accommodate others while those same others might need to adjust their style to accommodate us. Be patient with each other – everyone can have an off day or a move that we struggle with (even after all my years dancing, I have one very simple Plus move that it will take me all night to get right). NEVER, NEVER, NEVER tell someone that they aren’t getting it – that is the best way to make sure that someone drops out, never comes back and will be very negative about square/round dancing for the rest of their lives.

We do this to have fun. We need to do our part to help make it fun for those around us. This activity is very hard to do all by yourself.

Karyn Buchheit

"Sashay to Salem 2024" will be held at Blanchet Catholic School in Salem on July 12 to 14, 2024.

Hi everyone. We have excitedly started planning your summer festival. It will be July 12-14th, 2024 at Blanchet Catholic school. So mark those calendars. We want to see all of you there. We have two new talents coming from Sparks, Nevada, and Grove City, Ohio. Neither one has ever been to Oregon, so we are thrilled to show off our state and our amazing dancers. We hope you are excited to come see some fabulous talent. So don't forget to get your ribbons. If you come see us at Mid Winter and register, you will be entered into a very special contest for free ribbons. We are hosting the after party on Friday night from 10-11 in Hall A. We try to dance two times a month on the second and fourth Sunday from 1:30 to 3:30 in Hall B at the Emerald Square Dance Center (Hall B is behind the building at 2095 Yolanda in Springfield). Fred Beisse always surveys our members to be sure enough are available to have a dance. We normally have from 10 to 15 show up so he keeps the recorded tips short so those sitting out don't have long to wait before they are on the floor having a good time. Every once in a while we have a live caller as we did in November with Kris Jensen from Albuquerque, N.M. This spring we will enjoy dancing to a caller we have not danced to before--go to our website at cas-sd.yolasite.com for more information about scheduled dates and possible live callers. We always have a good time and welcome guests. Do be sure to call Fred at 541-683-2522 to find out if we are dancing on a particular Sunday.

Casual dress is the mode, but sometimes for special occasions we will get dressed up. We are looking forward to dancing at Mid-Winter in January. See you all on the floor at some time or another.

Happy New Year!

We dance on the 3rd and 4th Fridays of every month unless we go dark for a holiday or something special like Mid-Winter. We dance from 7:30 to 10PM in Hall A at the Emerald Square Dance Center in Springfield. We always have lots of goodies on the break bar but do not take a formal break.

Our dances have themes so if you like to dress with the theme, please go to our website at singletrees.blogspot.com to see what the theme is for any dance you plan to attend.

We start our dances with 15 minutes of rounds, then have a plus tip and then go into mainstream with every 3rd tip plus from 8 to 10PM.

We have been lucky to have guest callers coming down the I-5 corridor to call for us. Our cuer Jackie Gale has taken a break from cueing for us as the drive from Sweet Home to Springfield can be a bit iffy in the winter time. She will resume cueing one dance a month in March. We miss you, Jackie! Meanwhile, Christina Corelli has graciously subbed in on occasion. When Craig Abercrombie calls for us he does the cueing as well. In December we had two dances on the 15th and the 22nd with Craig calling the first one and K.C. Curtis calling the second one.

Many of us are looking forward to ringing in the New Year with Roger and Christina here at the square dance center. We appreciate their willingness to call and cue and allow us to gather as a square dance community to wish each other well in the new year to come. We are also looking forward to hosting the new dancers on Saturday, Jan. 6.

Please come join us. Thanks to our president Joy Pitts, our vice president Melba Walker and some others our hall is quite resplendent for the season.

Happy New Year and Happy Dancing!

We continue to dance every Sunday from 4 - 6 with Tim Matteson calling mainstream and plus. We rarely go dark, but once in a blue moon it happens. Please call David Lajoie, our president, at 541-520-7311, to make sure we are dancing.

One of our members, Melba Walker, and her sister, Joy Pitts, with help from their niece, Janet Geiger, added more and more Christmas decorations to the hall. It looks absolutely fantastic with lighted displays everywhere!

Tim Matteson, our caller, hosted a gathering at his home in Springfield. He started working on his "playmobile" display in September. It's very time consuming, but the results are always amazingly beautiful and intricate. You can spend hours looking at everything. This company is based in Germany. Tim works on photos of his displays for the company. He's been to Germany a number of times as well. This is the first time since COVID that he's been able to host such a gathering. Awesome, as usual!

We dance at the Emerald Dance Center at 2095 Yolanda in Springfield, Oregon 59477.

All are welcome to join us any Sunday for fun dancing and camaraderie. It's casual dress always.

Whirl-A-Ways
We dance the second and third Saturdays in each month September through June. Plus starts at 7PM with mainstream and rounds from 7:30 until 10:00PMs.

We enjoy Mike and Camille's new baby boy, Aidan, and take turns cuddling and holding him. He's already on the stage with his dad calling. He is also enjoying round dancing with Camille or Mike. What an awesome beginning to his life! Aidan has the most beautiful head of hair and an awesome and winsome smile! It's just so much fun seeing him when we go to dance.

We enjoyed Christmas squares with Mike and Christmas rounds with Christina.

We wish everyone a Very Happy New Year with many blessings for 2024!

We had two good dances in November. On the second Saturday, we celebrated Veteran’s Day with the wearing of red, white, and blue. We had visitations from Braids & Braves and Corvallis Squares. They earned their club banner back and gained a club banner from IWW.

The first dance in December was small. Daryl did a Sicilian circle and then did a square of two head couples and one side couple. Very interesting to watch and they did really well following instructions. The second dance in December is our Silent Auction, New Dancer Dance and Christmas dance. It will be a busy evening. We hope you have a chance to come and dance with us.

We are thrilled to report that Lebanon Square Circlers is experiencing an unprecedented growth spurt! As of this writing, we have seventy-five members and are still growing! We are dancing (usually) twice a month at our new venue, the Lebanon Senior Center, and will be hosting our New Dancer Dance Sunday, January 7. We have moved our Birthday Dance to February (2/4/24) so as to reduce conflicts with Mid-Winter and other dances.  Also, we plan to have Plus lessons, probably starting in February, once our Mainstream students have graduated. If you’ve never visited our website, we encourage you to pop in at www.lebanonsquarecirclers.com.

We continue with our Slo Two-step and Cha classes on Thursdays, and they are doing well. They keep asking for more music and less talking. Randy debuted a new song that he had written that day. It seemed to flow as he expected.

The Sunday Two-step class is also doing great and graduates about ten students on December 17. They will come back in January for three workshops to keep dance moves up to date before Mid-Winter. See you there!

We had a great turnout at our New Dancer Dance with 159 signed in. The dancing was great, and everyone seemed to have a lot of fun. We did move locations for this dance from Waldo Hills to Bethany Charter School. We had between 17-20 squares on the floor at times.

We scheduled a New Year's Eve dance and youth overnight party to celebrate the end of the year. How things turned out will be in next month's report.

We are starting to look at initial numbers that we will be taking to the Pacific Northwest Teen Square Dance Festival, mostly so that Karyn can send in possible numbers and start to put together squares. At the time of writing this we have almost fifty youth signed up. Please put on your calendars our fundraising dance for our youth. It will be on Saturday, February 24, a normal evening dance time for us. Again, we have reserved Bethany Charter School for the dance. We are still discussing having dinner with it as well. The kids are selling the Cash Raffle tickets and the Festival pins. We will have both available at Mid-Winter, if you want to catch a kid there to buy either one or both.

See you at a dance.

The PAC is looking forward to dancing with you all at the following council dances in 2024:

1. Tri-Council Dance at the Aloha Grange on March 30.

2. PAC 5th Friday dance at the Abernethy Grange, co-hosted by Bachelors and Bachelorettes, on May 31.

3. PAC 5th Friday dance at Oak Grove Community Center on August 30. This dance will be a community dance, in which we invite any and all members of our communities to give square dancing a try. The idea is to encourage brand new dancers to enjoy a free introduction to square dancing to support the many clubs that start lessons in the fall. Scott Zinser has generously agreed to donate his time and talents for this dance.

4. PAC 5th Friday dance at Milwaukie Community Club on November 29. This will be a new dancer Jamboree to support all the clubs who started lessons in the fall. Darrell Kalmbach will call, and Tami Helms will cue.

Chaps & Petticoats - Link
On Friday, Nov. 17, Chaps and Petticoats went dark to visit the Salem Swinging Stars, who dance the same Friday nights as us. We had a square and extras, thus met our goal to collect our Banner, and dance to Randy Dibble - great fun! Thank you SSS.

On Sunday, November 19, from 4-7:30 PM the Chaps hosted a New-Dancer Jamboree. Scott Zinser called, and Julie Stiers cued. More than 150 people (15 squares of dancers) turned out to enjoy a full Turkey Dinner, which we served in three shifts. This number was about 20+ more than last year, and it appeared we were short on turkey. But no…too late we found the breast of turkey just warming in a crockpot on the back counter. We apologize for the oversight, please enjoy with us next year.

Scott Zinser called for the Country Cut-Ups Jamboree on Dec. 10. The Chaps went dark for Sunday Lessons, and instead turned out to support our Club Caller, Scott, and dance with our students. I seem to remember six squares at the Cut-Ups, lots of smiles and thanks for the snacks too.

We are looking forward to the New Year fun and dancing with you. Chaps will dance Friday, Jan. 5 (Scott Zinser opens with Plus, and Leonard Snodgrass cues). On Jan. 19, Lane Clem opens with Rounds at 7:30 PM, and Renee Ruud will call Mainstream at 8:00 PM - care to join us?

Happy Holidays! If you are into dancing on December 30, come out to the Country Cut-Ups' Snowball Dance with Adam Christman and Craig Abercrombie. Our 5th Saturday dances are usually all Plus, but this one will have Plus from 7:00 to 7:30 PM, and 7:30-10 PM will be Mainstream level. There will be a $10 entry fee due to the double callers. Adam is an excellent caller, if you have not danced to him before, and he and Craig work well together. They also do the cueing. There will be finger food snacks.

Cut-Ups dance at the Boring Barn on 1st, 4th, and 5th Saturdays, but the 4th Saturday will be dark in January to encourage attendance at the Mid-Winter Festival in Albany.

In February of 2024, we will be starting up Bingo games on the 2nd and 4th Friday nights. Concessions will be available. Door opens at 6 PM, games begin at 7 PM. Come out and support the club!

We have a nice Mainstream class this year and will look forward to graduating a good group of potential new members! Congratulations to all the new dancers for finding such a fun recreation!

Rosetown Ramblers - Link
The Ramblers celebrated the holidays with our Nuttier Than a Fruitcake Dance on December 9. We saw some pretty nutty costumes on our dancers, and we also enjoyed fruitcake and cookies courtesy of our members. Our caller was Leo Catt. Leo danced at our December dance in 2021 and had so much fun that he offered to call our December dance the following year. And that was so much fun, that he made an encore appearance in 2023. We also had line dancing. You will never be bored at a Ramblers dance.

We look forward to welcoming lots of dancers to our famous Black and White Ball on January 13. Seattle sensation Stephen Cole saunters southward for this spectacular soirée. You need not wear black and white, but it’s always fun to see the various creative ways that these two contrasting colors can be combined. There will be Advanced dancing from 4-6, hosted by Heads to the Center. The Ramblers will alternate SSD (Mainstream) and Plus tips from 7-9:30. As usual, we will be at the Oak Grove Community Center.

We will offer another series of Social Square Dance lessons starting Wednesday, January 17, at Bridgeport United Church of Christ, 621 NE 76th Ave, Portland 97213. Our lessons continue every Wednesday from 7-8:30 pm until the last Wednesday in April. The first two lessons are free, to give potential dancers a chance to try before they buy. If you know anyone on Portland’s eastside who seems like a good candidate for dance lessons, send them our way!

Our 56th birthday dance on 12/16 was absolutely fantastic. We welcomed Buddy Weaver as our caller (his first time at our hall) - and he was just terrific! We had a floor full of round dancers for Rikki and 6 squares signed in for the dance - with mostly 4 on the floor for the night! Lots of fun. Next year's birthday dance will be back to the 1st Saturday and will feature Adam Christman and Rikki. Our next dance is Saturday Jan 6th with Chuck and Elaine as we invite you to "Rock Into The New Year" Then on Jan 20th we will have an Amateur nite as we go "Singin and Swingin with the Penguins" We have quite a few amateurs already signed up!! The first Stars dance in December was the “Christmas” dance on

December 9. Since the regular dance night (the 4th Saturday) was on

December 23, we figured that was a little too close to Christmas. We

will have our Annual New Year’s Eve dance and celebrate the

New Year at midnight on New York Time or 9pm Pacific Time. That way

everything starts regular dance time and we get home before the

revelers were on the highway. The caller and cuer are mysteries again

this year.

On December 16, the Stars turned out in force to help the Charlie

Brown Squares celebrate their birthday. What a wonderful caller.

Everyone enjoyed Buddy Weaver.

We will start new Square Dance 101 classes (of SSD) on January 8.

Janet Geiger will be calling the SSD Dance on January 5, 2024. The Stars

will have their Annual Black and White Dance on January 13, 2024 with

Phil Ramey calling and Elaine Funk cueing.

A good many of the Stars, new dancers included, are planning to

go to Midwinter Festival on January 26, 27 & 28. We don’t want to miss

The November TVC meeting was held via Zoom with 15 members present and TVC President Dale Brabham presiding. Reports were delivered by the Council officers and appointees. Due to the holidays there will not be a TVC meeting in December.

The next TVC Meeting will be held in person on Monday, January 22nd, 2024, at the Hillsboro IOOF Hall in Hillsboro. This will be our annual President’s Potluck and Meeting. Potluck at 6 pm, Meeting at 7. This annual meeting is held to honor current and past club Presidents of the TVC clubs. All TVC club Presidents & dancers are invited to join us. At this meeting TVC President Dale Brabham will announce the recipient of the Tualatin Valley Council “Recognition Award”. This award is for outstanding service and special contribution to the square dance community within the TVC geographical area. Please see the flyer below or in the 'Flyer' section of this OFN issue.

Since the OFN is published about the 20th of the month, you still have time to plan on attending the New Year’s Eve dance at the Hillsboro IOOF Hall with Darrell Kalmbach calling and Tami Helms cueing. The format will be: 7:00 to 7:15 pm, Rounds, 7:15 to 7:30 pm, Plus, and 7:30 to 9:30 pm, Mainstream with every 3rd tip Plus.

Columbia River Dancers - Link
Technically, it is a December dance, but here it is anyway. We will be sponsoring our annual New Year’s Eve dance on December 31. While most NY eve dances end after midnight local time, we have decided that this year we will celebrate with the fine people of Chicago instead. Their new year begins while it is 10 PM here. So, our dance this year will begin at 7 PM and we will wish everyone a “Happy New Year” at 10PM, or midnight in Chicago. This will allow our younger dancers to go party and allow the older more sensible dancers to be home to welcome 2024.

As in the past we will have Adam Christman and Craig Abercrombie calling. Jim will be missed. The dance will be mainstream with every third round plus.

Our regular January dances will be on the 5th and the 19th. Daryl Clendenin will call those dances and has been cueing as well.

We will begin a new class on Sunday, the 6th of January. We are encouraging interested people to come in and try it for free. What a deal!

We encourage all levels of dancers to attend the annual Mid-Winter Festival over the weekend of January 27-29 in Albany, Oregon.

Lastly, the Columbia River Dancers thank everyone who has danced with us this past year and wishes all the very best HAPPY NEW YEAR.

Hayshakers - Link
The Hayshakers have had a solid two squares for many months both for weekly lessons and a student level dance on the fourth Sunday of every month. We have just one student who began lessons in September and may finish up Mainstream in January.

We’ve been having fun with 8 Chain Thru and 8 Chain x (x = 1 to 7). Many months of Plus lessons have covered Teacup Chain and Load the Boat.

A new cycle of lessons may start when daylight saving time resumes on Sunday March 10th.

Hoedowners - Link
This November, the Hoedowners took the opportunity to remind themselves of all the things we must be thankful for. Square dancing, of course, great, generous callers and enthusiastic dancers and the many clubs.

How about the music? I’m thankful we have so many genres of music; folk, pop, classical, country, hip hop, rock, electronic, religious, jazz, rhythm, and blues. A little bit of every style. And we’re always thankful when we can sing along. We’re thankful for friends and friendships we’ve made along the way across a square.

Hoedowners are thankful for the hard work that the Aloha Grange invests in keeping this building in beautiful condition with mostly volunteer help. Those volunteers are the largely silent and unseen workers we don’t often thank enough.

Hoedowners are thankful for those dry, sunny days that come amidst two weeks of steady rain. We’re thankful for the steady rain that makes our bit of the world so green and lush. We’re thankful for a furnace that keeps us warm and air conditioning to keep us cool.

We’re thankful for our friends and families no matter how close or far away. We’re thankful for cell phones which enable us to reach out to others, call for help, find our way to our destination or receive an insanely funny text. We’re even thankful for TV! It entertains us, lets us see the rest of the world from a variety of perspectives.

Hoedowners are thankful for the variety and bounty of our meals. We’re thankful for all the thought that goes into preparing food for tables at home and our table at our dances.

For those of us with pets, we’re thankful for their devotion. We’re thankful for books to inspire, sooth and teach. We’re thankful for art; doesn’t matter if by a master or a preschooler. We’re thankful for the person who pumps the gas, works as a flagger and all others who work outside no matter the weather. We’re thankful for firemen, first responders, EMTs and police who may see tragedies we couldn’t face.

We’re thankful for the quiet times and LAUGHTER, crazy hysterical laughter!

We hope your November was full of thankfulness.

We’re thankful to all who joined us on November 11th for our Veterans Day Dance and on November 25th when we dined on Pizza Pie and desert pies.

We’re looking forward to January when on the 13th we’ll have a Soup Dance. How many different soups can we muster?

And Mid-Winter Festival is fast approaching. See you there.

Oak Hills Squares - Link
The Oak Hills Squares have been moving and grooving! We are still meeting on Monday evenings at 6:30 in Oak Hills Rec Center and November brought many dancers out share in the fun. Halloween was celebrated with all dancers in the SPIRIT wearing costumes, and Mark played Halloween music to enhance the spooky mood.

As of this writing our club plans a Holiday Celebration in December with a “funky sweater” theme, and plenty of good treats.

The New Year will feature lessons for new dancers beginning January 15th from 6:30 to 7:30. Our fun and friendly group will welcome beginners on January 15th , 22nd, and 29th . We welcome newcomers and would be happy to have experienced dancers from other clubs to come and be “angels” to the newbies.

R Square D - Link
R Square D’s annual Veterans Day dance was great fun with 74 dancers, including 19 veterans and students from several clubs that are holding lessons. Craig Abercrombie called and Susan Healea cued that evening to patriotic and lively music. Everyone enjoyed refreshments after the dance, as well as visiting with fellow dancers.

Our club visited Columbia River Dancers at their November 17th dance and we came home with one of their banners. We enjoyed dancing to Daryl Clendenin’s great calling and seeing many of our friends who regularly attend our dances. We plan to visit other “sister” clubs in the upcoming months.

Craig and Susan called and cued our “Gospel Dance” the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Many of us were happy to dance after indulging in rich holiday food!

R Square D has only one dance in January, which is on the 12th. Plus dancing and intermediate rounds are from 7 to 8. Mainstream dance with phase II rounds is 8 to 9:30, with Craig and Susan again calling and cueing. We will be dark on January 27th for Mid-Winter Festival.

January 20th is a mainstream dance with Darrell and Tami. January 4th and 18th are the Plus dances also with our club caller and cuer, Darrell and Tami.

Beginning square dance classes begin on January 14th from 2:00-4:00 at the Hillsboro IOOF hall. Darrell Kalmbach is instructing. The first dance is free .. please encourage those interested to join us!

The TVC President's potluck is at the Hillsboro IOOF Hall on January 22nd. It is a potluck dinner at 6:00 pm followed by a meeting. We hope many will attend to honor the work of all the current TVC President's.

I reported last month on the successful Seaside Sashay and have a few more details to report. There were 269 dancers registered. Preliminary results show a positive net income for the Promenaders and the Hayshakers who co-hosted the dance. Many have already pre-registered for the 2024 dance which will take place on October 25th & 26th.

Tri Squares - Link
In November our lessons for Mainstream and Two-Step continued very well, both at the Kinton Grange and the airpark. We had two dances, the "Grateful Harvest Pie Party" on the 10th, and the black and white "Black Friday" dance on the 24th. And we headed over to the "Turkey Trot" Thanksgiving dance and dinner, too, at Chaps & Petticoats.

In January our lessons begin again every Sunday afternoon, with Plus at 2:00-3:15 and the second part of Mainstream at 3:00-5:30, both taught by Terry Halley at the Kinton Grange. They start on January 7th. We have only one dance, "B51 Cowboy Country" on January 12th, called by Terry and cued by Sandra Pinion. Be sure to bring your students to our grange for this B51 dance! On January 26th we'll be dark in honor of the Midwinter Festival in Albany.

Wave Steppers - Link
As we do each year the Wavesteppers go dark in winter through January. We have several snowbirds who fly south for warmer weather which leaves us without enough dancers to have a dance. We will resume dancing on February 6th.

We are still looking for a new club caller, Lane has resigned his position.

Our dance venue is the Tillamook Senior Center, 316 Stillwell Avenue. Located on the corner of 4th and Stillwell there is no on site parking and little street parking. The huge Tillamook Coliseum Theater parking lot is directly across the street. Our dances are held weekly on Tuesdays from 4:00 to 6:00 except the dark months in winter.

For up to date information see: www.wavesteppers.org. (see above link)
