Editor's Note

It was nice to see 225 of our local dancers at the Summer Festival in Salem. A warm "thank you" to the small group of dedicated volunteers who organized and executed this convention.

Meet the USDA Executive Committee! This amazing group of individuals volunteer their time all year long to provide guidance and information on behalf of the United Square Dancers of America - Your National Dancers Organization.

On June 28th, Lebanon Square Circlers raided the Willamette Squares dance. 21 dancers and 2 non-dancers participated in the raid. We also had a few other dancers attend but not be part of the raid itself, bringing our total to 27 dancers and the 2 non-dancers.

We held two dances in June with our usual turnout of 12 to 14 or so dancers. In order to potentially bolster our numbers once again, Tim Matteson, caller for Spin Cycle Squares, plans on offering an advanced class on Wednesday evenings starting this fall. If you know of anyone in this area interested in taking advanced lessons, please let them know. They should contact Tim Matteson or Fred Beisse for more information.

We dance to recorded music, but occasionally we will bring in a live caller. Our last dance in July will be the 27th and then in August we will dance, we hope, on Aug. 10th. We are looking forward to dancing some advanced at the “Life’s A Dance Festival” being held from Aug. 22 to the 24th at our hall here in Springfield. Hunter Keller is calling and Rikki Lobato is cueing. It should be a really fun event. RVs are welcome to dry camp in the parking lot. There will be a wagon master on hand to help out. Ribbons are on sale. To obtain them or get more information, please call 541-359-4390 or 541-343-7323 or e-mail LifesADanceFestival@gmail.com. We are hoping that Dan Preedy will call for us Nov. 9.

CAS dances on Sundays from 1:30 to 3:30 (normally the 2nd and 4th Sundays, but sometimes on the 1st and 3rd) at the Emerald Square Dance Center at 2095 Yolanda in Springfield (take the 19th /Mohawk exit off 105/126 going east from I-5) in Hall B behind the building. Since we are small in number, Fred Beisse always does a poll at the beginning of the week and if we cannot muster more than a square, we do not dance. If you are not on is email list, be sure to call him beforehand to make sure we are dancing. His number is (cell) 458-221-3564.

Melba Walker is a square dancer who comes and supports Spin Cycle Squares big time.  We were looking forward to having Melba come and dance with us following her successful shoulder surgery.  Then, Melba fell and damaged the C2 disc in her neck, had surgery, was in ICU and then a regular room at Riverbend Hospital.  Now, Melba is at Avamere Rehab on Chambers.  You can go and see her.  She'd love it.  Jake and I went to see her recently.  She was able to squeeze my hand with her left hand and eat with a special fork with her right hand.  She has physical therapy and is able, with help, to sit up and walk.  She's wowing her doctors which is an amazing sign and accomplishment.  She has a lot of support from family and her square and round dance family too.

Our caller, Tim Matteson and dancers David and Raymond got to dance in San Francisco at a big festival.  It was a bit overwhelming, but a heck of a lot of fun too, they said!  We were dark for that Sunday when they were gone.

We've been having quite a few guests which is always fun! Tim always calls to the floor which means if we have Mainstream dancers, that's what he will call.  If we have Plus dancers, he will call Plus.   Something for everyone who shows up.  We always have lots of munchies too.  So, please come and enjoy two hours of dancing and camaraderie.

Please call our president, David Lajoie at 541-520-7311 to make sure we are, indeed, dancing.  We rarely go dark, but it's still best to make sure. Planned dark dates in he next several months are September 21 and October 12.

August means fun in the sun, with dancing at the State Fair, picnics, and memories of Summer Festival and other special events.

We are savoring great memories of our last dance of the season, the annual luau. Cynthia, and a team of energetic volunteers turned the hall into a tropical paradise. The pre-dance luau hit the perfect beginning note with yummy island potluck dishes. Bruce and Judy shared appropriate music, along with some guest callers and cuers. Another highlight was a hula demo and lesson by Cynthia. Nearly everyone participated in the fun. What good sports. And then, there was the spouting volcano cake, a much-anticipated feature of our annual luau.

Next up on our agenda will be a Summer picnic and club meeting in late August. We will be finalizing plans for lessons to be held at Corvallis Community Center beginning in September.

We are happy to introduce our new president, Debbie Snelling, and share a huge thank you to Jaga and Tom Giebultowicz, our retiring president couple.

We had a good dance in June and on July 5, we had a Red, White and Blue dance. We were dark on July 12 for Summer Festival and will have a visitation by Willamette Squares on August 2.

We finalized the update of our Constitution and By Laws at our June board meeting, so all of our documents are up to date.

We had a mystery trip to Whirl-A-Ways in Eugene with nineteen members present. Seventeen of us ate dinner at the Cascade Grill in Albany before driving the rest of the way. They now need to come and visit us to get back their banner.

We will start mainstream in September and will have plus lessons in February after the Super Bowl is over. Put our club on your schedule for the fall.

The only activity we have going is the monthly choosing of the round of the month by the councils. There is sme good music out there for us to dance to now.

We had a meeting during Summer Festival so no report until afterwards. We will be discussing a round dance event for next year, and we are hoping to get some details lined out during the meeting.

We held our 49th birthday dance in June with seven dancers in attendance. We danced to some of our favorite music and had some snacks.

The Sunday lessons will resume in September also. As of now, we are planning a beginning two-step class. This may change once more information is gathered. Stay tuned.

It's HOT! But we are still dancing all summer long. Our hall is air conditioned, and we also use fans to move that cool air all around. Our 4th of July dance was well attended and lots of fun for all who were there. July 18 featured our Caller Randy Dibble and Cuer Randy Lewis.

August brings three dances. August 1 with the Randy's, and August 15 with special guest caller Mike Kious and Cuer Randy Lewis. This dance will be a BEACH theme! August 29 is a 5th Friday Plus Dance with the Randy's Calling and Cueing. Come on in from the heat and enjoy some COOL dancing with us. See you on the dance floor.

Our group danced on the trailer (and along behind) in the Mt. Angel 4th of July parade. We had enough of our group to have three squares and some extras. Our next parade for the summer will be the Homer Davenport Days parade in Silverton in August.

We went dark for our Friday dance in July for Summer Festival, and we will be dark for our Friday dance in August for the wedding of two of our members.

Lessons will start in September for both square and 2-step.

Did you attend the River City Dancers 35rd Anniversary Dance on Saturday, June 28th?… I counted six squares dancing to Darrell Kalmbach and Tami Helms with oh-so-many Blue outfits honoring the RCD theme.. All three Councils were there (PAC, TVC and Evergreen), there were two guest callers present and Rosetown Ramblers claimed a Visitation Banner … a great success!

Come find us on opening day, August 12, at the Clackamas County Fair in Canby. Chaps and friends will do a Sq.Dance DEMO and audience teach beginning at 3:15 PM on the Rodeo Stage with our Caller, Scott Zinser .…come early, we’ll see you at the Fair. - hang out with us afterwards, at the Food Court and enjoy all the great foods. Do grab a bag of fresh-made cookies, sold at Horning Hall, before you leave the Fair.

What are you doing to celebrate Labor Day weekend? Have you ever danced in the surf at the Port Orford Beach? The Beachcombers do, beginning 10 AM- on Saturday morning, August 30 in the Port Orford sands. Afterwards is the MEN (only) Pie Bake (men bring the filling) and the pie dough is provided...later, your pie can be entered into the evening Silent Auction!! The weekend Battle Rock Festival actually starts Thursday, AUG 28 at 6:30pm at Trails End dance with Mark McDonald and Dave Cooper calling & cueing. All the headliners are listed on the Beachcomber Flyer in the OFNews under Special Dances section.

Don’t want to travel much before Labor Day, then attend the TVC 5th Saturday dance August 30 at Aloha Grange beginning 7 PM with Tami Helms and Darrell Kalmbach calling PLUS 7:15-7:30, and MS till 9:30PM.

The Chaps and Petticoats hope you mark your calendars for Friday, September 5th, when we return to dancing at the Maplewood Grange.with Scott Zinser and Mark McDonald as Caller/Cuer.

Have a safe and happy Summer,

Happy Hoppers - Link
The Happy Hoppers of Vancouver, WA want to thank everyone who helped them celebrate their 66th Anniversary on June 21, 2025. Wonderful crowd and fun dance. Craig Abercrombie and Adam Christman had everyone dancing and smiling throughout the evening with their calling and cueing talents. Our evening concluded with a well-deserved ice cream social.

Happy Hoppers will be dark in July and August. Our club will be back to lessons and dancing in September at the Washington Grange in Vancouver, WA. We ask everyone to check our website happy-hoppers.com to keep informed.

The club plans on participating at the Clark County Fair by sharing square dancing and providing information. Our hope is that this square dance demonstration may encourage others to learn this great activity.

The Happy Hoppers will have a picnic for members this summer.  The date is set for Sunday, August 3, 2025 at 1:00pm.

Many dancers continue dancing in the summer...we cheer you on and might see you along the way. See you dancing,

Denise and Roz Buddenberg

Thanks to all the dancers in blue that joined River City for our 35th Anniversary Dance in June.  It was a good time.

We have just returned from Summer Festival in Salem. RCD hosted a very successful clothing resale at the Festival. Our share of the profits will support club lessons and other activities.

In August we are looking forward to our annual club picnic.

Join us for summer dancing in our air conditioned hall.

Rosetown Ramblers - Link
The Ramblers brought 14 dancers to the River City Dancers anniversary dance on June 28, and we brought home another banner.

We marched in the parade and performed at Pride Beaverton on June 29. We received many compliments from the assembled throng, some of whom exclaimed, “That’s definitely not how we remember square dancing!” And that’s a good thing!

Many of us headed to San Francisco July 3-6 for the IAGSDC convention. We enjoyed dancing with 850 old and new friends, to some of the world’s best callers.

We marched in the Portland Pride Parade on July 20. Groups of Ramblers plan to head over to Sisters for the Central Oregon Round-up August 7-9, and then it’s back on the road for the Life’s A Dance Festival in Springfield August 22-24. In between, we’re planning a club outing to Tigard’s Broadway Rose Theatre for Anything Goes on August 16.

We’ll gear up for our fall lesson series by performing at Oregon City Pride on September 6 in the afternoon, followed by a free introduction to square dance at Oak Grove at 7 pm that same evening

Our lessons will start on Wednesday, September 10, at a new venue. After eight years in NE Portland, we are moving a few miles south to the beautiful, air-conditioned Parish Hall at All Saints Episcopal Church, 4033 SE Woodstock Blvd., Portland 97202. This new venue will give us more room to spread out as our classes continue to grow, and we’ll also be able to have snacks while we learn. We are very excited about this new chapter in our club’s history.

The June 23rd TVC meeting was not held due to vacations and member summer activities. Although there was no meeting that does not mean that there was no business being done. A group of dedicated individuals were hard at work preparing the donation basket from the TVC to the Oregon Summer Festival in July. Work continued on the TVC Directory with completion near the end of June. The printing order was submitted for a July delivery and distribution. I wish to thank all the club members who provided me with their information in a timely manner so the scheduled completion could be achieved. The TVC Directory is posted on the TVC website, https://www.tualatinvalleycouncil.org/documents. It can also be viewed in a page turning format at: https://mixam.com/share/6841d5011b04da53e745e4d1.

Three of the Councils eleven clubs are dark for the summer. Columbia River Dancers, Mix 'n Mingle, and TriSquares are all visiting other clubs with air conditioned halls. All three will resume dancing in September.

The next Council event will be a TVC 5th Saturday dance on August 30th. The “End of Summer Dance”, co-hosted by the Eager Beavers, will be held at the Aloha Grange. Darrell Kalmbach and Tami Helms will be the caller and cuer, with the format: 7:00 to 7:15 p.m., Rounds, 7:15 to 7:30 p.m., Plus, and 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., Mainstream with every 3rd tip Plus. We are having fun this summer on Sunday nights even after going dark for club dances in July and August. After we had our last dance in June we started to do some extended plus moves and are continuing with our mainstream workshops.

We would love to have you come out the rest of the summer and join us. Our plus workshop starts at 5 PM and our mainstream goes from 6 to 7:30. We feel that it is important to keep our new dancers involved and learning so they will be ready to dance in the fall. If your club has new dancers encourage them to come. The mainstream instruction is semi-workshop based so if someone is not familiar with a move that is what Daryl will work on. We are 3 miles east on 179th street off of exit 9 on l-5.

One thing to remember however, summers can get very warm so if the temperature in 90 degrees or more at 5 PM we won’t be dancing.

The Eager Beavers had five Mondays of dancing in June; including our first of the summer Hawaiian dress day on the 9th and four squares to enjoy it (see our “Island Time” photo in the July OFN).

A visitation to the Oak Hills Squares Anniversary dance on June 16th earned a banner with over one square in attendance. Our club activities included a dine-out on June 30th with 22 members going to “Hug Grill Buffet” in Hillsboro.

We are looking forward to our annual summer picnic on August 14th. The club invades Noble Woods Park in Hillsboro for a fun afternoon of games, food, and visiting.

The Eager Beavers are co-hosting the TVC 5th Saturday Dance on August 30th. The featured caller and cuer are our own Darrell and Tami. The “End of Summer Dance” starts at 7pm at the Aloha Grange.

You are welcome to join us for Plus with Phase II and III Rounds in air-conditioned comfort at the Aloha Grange every Monday afternoon from 1:00 to 3:00. For current dancing information, please see our website at https://EagerBeavers.info. (see link above).

Is it summer yet? It sure feels like it, mild weather and on June 14th our Father's Day Dance featuring Dad's favorite HOT DOGS! Of course hot dogs need condiments and we had them all. Michael Kious calling and Randy Lewis directing the round dancers.

On June 28th we changed gears for our "Hoping to Sea You". I'll bet you figured out we were celebrating seafood and the delights we enjoy fresh with the coast right here. A wonderful June evening, it was only 73 degrees at dance time.

Last month Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys passed away. That certainly started me on a review of the Beach Boys music; "Surfin' Safari", "Surfin' USA" and "Surfer Girl". Who can forget "Little Deuce Coup"? If you go to a car show, the influence is still there. But as the years past their music grew, matured and changed. We sang their songs about Barbara Ann, Rhonda, and those California Girls but I love the introspective songs like "In My Room" and "Wouldn't it be Nice" and "I Can Hear Music". Tune up your phone, your Alexa, your radio, pull out those old 45’s and journey back. You won't regret it.

Wild, Wild West is our first dance of the month of August. On the 9th Michael Kious and Randy Lewis will keep us hootin' and hollerin' to the great cowboy square dancing tunes. Dig out your cowboy hat, boots, and scarves. Blue jeans are a must and find that western belt with the big buckle. A little fringe improves the outfit. Be on the lookout for that sheriff and the jail cell in the corner. Last year two armed and masked bandits broke into the ballroom with the split the pot bucket in hand. We thought it was a robbery but they were just trying to sell more tickets.

Here's your chance to dress up and attend our Roaring Twenties Dance on August 23rd. There will be great costumes, guys in suspenders, black shirts, spats, and hats. Including the ladies as flappers with fringe, sequins, boas, headbands, and long beads it should be a swingin' time. Let's have a Gatsby gala evening with guest caller Roger Putzler on the microphone putting us through our paces. As always, Randy, How many shopping days until Christmas, will be cueing our rounds for us.

We hope to see you there!!!

Summer is a great time to dance: June 11th was our "Take me out to the Ballgame" Square Dance. We had many teams and different sports represented with team T shirts. Ice Cream Floats were served at our summer introductory dance in our air conditioned Catlin Center.

June 21st saw R Square D attending the Anniversary Dance for Happy Hoppers in Vancouver, WA. We danced to Craig Abercrombie and Adam Christman. Ice Cream floats were enjoyed by many after the dance.

Then on June 25th we held a Hawaiian Dance. Leis and Hawaiian shirts were worn and many danced to summer music.

The Evergreen Council Dance on June 29th was hosted by the R Square D at the Catlin Center. Of course we were well represented at the Council dance. Many clubs and Council dancers attended and danced away the evening. All kinds of dishes were shared and enjoyed by all. Terry Halley was the Caller and Susan Healea was the Cuer.

The August 13th Root Beer Floats and the 27th Ice Cream Social continue our summer dance schedule. Plus and Rounds at 7p then Mainstream and rounds from 8p-9:30p. Held at Catlin Center Kelso, WA

August 16th we will be part of Squirrel Fest in Longview, WA. This is a street dance with Caller Terry Halley. It is a membership drive and includes the crowd joining us for a beginner dance lesson. Each dancer is invited to come and try square dance lessons in September.

Hope you all enjoy the summer. Keep dancing, and as Helen Keller said" What was once enjoyed we can never lose."

June activities: June 11th had a guest caller, Mark Wheeler, so our Club Caller could have a special family gathering.

June 21st dance theme was the Beginning of Summer with an Ice Cream Social with the members providing various toppings.

August activities: August 2nd we are having a theme of Hawaiian Luau Club. We are inviting all Mainstream dancers to come, and enjoy themselves envisioning being in Hawaii celebrating the Luau by square dancing. Dancers whether in Hawaii-themed attire or not should come prepared to celebrate.

The Annual Club Picnic will be on August 17th at Noble Woods Park. We are having a “bring your own food and drink” and fruit and/or dessert to share with our group.

The Club is planning to have Mainstream Square Dance lessons starting January 11th, 2026 (wow, which is coming up so fast). We hope to have a good-sized class this time; we need the new dancers. It is possible we might have a round dance class in September.

The Club will be having a campout from September 26th to the 28th at Silver Lake, Washington.

We really appreciate our visitors, and we invite more dancers to come visit us both at our Plus Dances on the first, third, and fifth Thursdays and the Mainstream Dances on first and second Saturdays all at the Hillsboro’s Odd Fellows Hall at Third and Main upstairs {elevator available). The dance hall is air-conditioning and has a great wood dance floor.

Tri Squares - Link
Hello from Tri Squares in Beaverton!

What a wonderful way to wrap up our June season with two fantastic dances! Our patriotic Red, White, and Blueberry dance on June 13th brought out the best in everyone; it was delightful to see our dancers proudly sporting our nation's colors.

Our season finale on Friday, June 27th, truly exceeded expectations. We were thrilled to welcome visitors from Valley Squares, Eager Beavers, Oak Hills Squares, and the Hoedowners, along with a dedicated couple who traveled all the way from Columbia River Dancers and several independent dancers. The energy was incredible with three plus squares and four mainstream squares filling our floor!

As the evening wound down with our traditional thank you circle, we celebrated with a delicious ice cream social featuring an array of tempting toppings; fresh fruit, homemade raspberry jam, crushed Oreos, and whipped cream. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us and made our final dance so memorable.

While Tri Squares will be dark through the end of August, you'll find many of our members out exploring clubs throughout the area. Mark your calendars; we'll be back in action on September 12th!

Looking ahead, we're excited to announce that Tri Squares will be offering Square Dance Basics and Round Dance lessons beginning September 28th. Watch for more details in next month's report.

Keep dancing,

Renee Ramig

Wave Steppers - Link
Wavesteppers dance at the Tillamook Senior Center from 4-6pm on Tuesday each week. Our caller is Anthony Egan.

The address of the Tillamook Senior Center is 316 Stillwell Avenue, Tillamook. Located on the corner of 4th and Stillwell there is no on site parking and little street parking. The huge Safeway parking lot is directly across the street. Dancing weekly on Tuesdays from 4:00 to 6:00, we always have food and snacks.

We will be dancing at the Tillamook County Fair on Thursday August 7th at 11:30 on the stage in the courtyard. Pari-Mutuel Horse Racing starts at 12:30 pm, with a post time of 1:00 pm, in the grandstand arena. Unless you are adventurous, I'd suggest you steer clear of the Mechanical Bull ride just inside the Main Fair Entrance!

Come enjoy an old fashion county fair and be sure to check out the Pig 'n Ford races.

Our anniversary dance will be September 6th from 5:30-7:30 at the Garibaldi Community Center. 107 6th Street; Garibaldi, Oregon. Mark Wheeler will be calling with Lane Clem cueing.
