I’m excited and honored to serve as your President this year, with our focus centered on one key theme: Promotions.
We all know the joy that square and round dancing brings—the music, the laughter, the friendships, and the fun. Now it’s time to share that joy with others and let our communities know what we’re all about.
Let’s get the word out. Whether it’s a booth at a local farmers market, a demo at a public event, or an open house at your club, every opportunity to promote dancing is a step toward growth.
Signage and visibility matter. Let’s make sure people know where we are. More signs and banners at our dance venues, plus visibility at community events can catch the eye and spark curiosity. The more people who see us, the more chances we have to welcome new dancers.
Thank you for all the energy and heart you put into keeping our activity thriving. As we share ideas and support each other, we strengthen the foundation to a thriving future. Let’s celebrate what makes square and round dancing special—and make sure more Oregonians get the chance to experience it.
Let’s work together to make this a year of big smiles, full halls, and shared enthusiasm for the dancing we love.
Joyce Welton

Square Dancers,
Most of you know that I lost my beloved Patty last March. I have slowly been going through her belongings and weeding them out to the kids and grandkids. I was planning on taking her square dance clothes to Mid-Winter for resale when I was told I should do something differently with them. So, following orders, here's what I am doing.
On Saturday, September 20 and Sunday, September 21, I am putting all her blouses, skirts, dresses (not many, she didn't like dresses), petticoats and other such clothing on racks in my driveway. All who want may come and select as much as they want. My address is in the OFN. What doesn't get taken I will go ahead and take to Mid-Winter. I will be open from 10:00 am to 6:00pm both days.

Presented by the Muddy Frogs Square Dance Club, the Open House is an excellent opportunity to experience square dancing. As a low-impact, aerobic, and social activity, square dancing is good for the body, mind and soul.
Dress is casual! There is no charge! No experience is needed! Partners are welcome but not required. Bring a friend—or two or three! Experienced, but “rusty,” square dancers familiar with the figures will be on hand to assist.
Muddy Frogs had a successful Open House on August 10. A "big thank you!" to the folks from area square dance clubs who attended to show their support!
Jim Swanson did a great job calling to the floor--some experienced tips; pausing for instruction as needed; and teaching basics to those who were new to square dancing. Attending was a nice mix of experienced square dancers, several varying-degrees-of-rusty dancers, and a granddaughter who hadn't square danced before.
Plans are in the works for another Open House on September 21 from 2 - 4 p.m. in the Milton Freewater Community Building.
Additionally, a Blue Mountains Council meeting was held. Officers agreed to continue their current positions.
Questions? Please reach out to Merri Anne at merrianneh@charter.net or Kim at luckymunk50@yahoo.com.
Thank you,

Speaking of callers we are looking forward to having Dan Preedy call for us on Nov. 9. Please mark your calendars and plan on coming for what should be a really fun time.
Out of curiosity and as we are all in the same boat with dwindling numbers of dancers attending our festivals and dances, I would like to create a current list of various ways to recruit new dancers. Word of mouth used to work so well for us in the past when we had huge numbers of dancers in all our clubs inviting friends and family. Advertising has been tried but is quite expensive for the low number of people recruited. What are some of the ways your clubs have gone about getting new dancers and thus new members? If you have any ideas, old or new, please send them to me, Gaynor Hintz, at dancergayn@gamil.com. I’d appreciate it.
By the way one method we have tried in recently and will again this year is holding community dances—free dances to entice people who might have an interest in becoming square dancers. We will hold one as part of our “Life’s A Dance” Festival being held at our hall August 22nd to the 24th. This should be a really fun event for anyone with an interest or who is curious about our favorite pastime. This part of the festival is free to new dancers, and we hope we will get many recruits from it.
We continue to have enough dancers show up to have two dances a month at the Emerald Square Dance Center at 2095 Yolanda from 1:30 to 3:30. It is always advisable to call Fred Beisse beforehand to make sure we are dancing if you have not gotten your email address on his list so you can be notified when we have to cancel. Please call him at 458-221-3564. You can check our website at cas-sd.yolasite.com for our tentative shedule.
In September we will dance on the 7th and 21st. Normally we dance on the 2nd and 4th Sundays. Also in September starting on Wednesday Sept. 3 we will offer advanced lessons with Tim Matteson teaching from 7:15 to 9PM in Hall A of the ESDC. As usual it is casual dress and no partner is required. Please come angel or find people among your plus dancing friends to join us. The more the merrier.

Melba Walker is home from rehab and doing well. She is able to get up out of bed and move about with a walker. Melba's progress has surpassed doctors' expectations! Go Melba! We pray for continued healing and recovery.
Please call our president, David Lajoie at 541-520-7311 to make sure we are, indeed, dancing. We rarely go dark, but it's still best to make sure. Planned dark dates are September 21 and October 12.

Christina will be teaching beginning Waltz round dancing Monday nights starting September 8 at 7:00. Don't have a partner? Come anyway! Got two left feet? Bring ‘em both!
It’s casual dress. Smooth-soled shoes work the best. Christina does have dance 'socs' for sale that help you glide on the floor. Beginning Cha Cha will be at 8:00.
We are getting ready for the Life's a Dance Festival coming up August 22nd to the 24th. Hunter Keller is the featured caller and Rikki Lobato the featured cuer. Find this festival on FaceBook. For information please call 541-359-4390 or 541-343-7323 or e-mail LifesADanceFestival@gmail.com
Ribbons are on sale or pay at the door at this point. Get yours today and come and enjoy this awesome weekend with Hunter and Rikki.

Our September 3 dance theme is “Back to School.” We will be collecting items to donate to Bloom’n Boutique. This is a nonprofit organization that supplies new clothes and school supplies for needy children identified by Clackamas County. The boutique would also be happy to receive checks. Our club caller, Darrell Kalmbach, will call and our club cuer, Tami Helms, will cue on September 3.
Our September 17 dance will be called by Melissa James, and our cuer will be Tami Helms.
Lessons will begin on September 10. We will temporarily change our dance times for the months that we have lessons (September 10 through December). Dances will still be on the 1st, 3rd, and 5th Wednesdays. Dance times will be 7:30 to 9:30pm. Every third tip will be plus. Rounds will be slightly higher level. Our normal dance times will return in January. Class instructor will be Darrell Kalmbach. He will be teaching at both B ‘n’ Bs and River City. Students are encouraged to attend lessons at both clubs for more floor time and exposure to calls. Both clubs welcome angels. Angels don’t have to pay for lessons, and they pay a discounted fee of $5 at the door if they stay to dance after lessons.
September 3 (1st Wed)
September 17 (3rd Wed)
We then have two fabulous dances in September. On September 6, Mike Kious will call, and Sherri Milling will cue. On September 27, Scott Zinser will call, and Julie Stiers will cue. In between we will be doing some painting so come check out our new colors.
September also brings the return of school—and Mainstream square dance lessons. On Thursday evenings at 7:30 PM, starting on September 11, Scott Zinser will be teaching newcomers about the wonderful world of square dancing. Come check it out at the Boring Barn. Experienced dancers always are needed for support!
Round dance lessons will begin on October 5, with Julie Stiers teaching. Both Two-step and Cha cha/rumba will be available. Check out our flyer for more details.
Also, we are excited to resume Bingo on September 12. If you haven't come out and played with us, you should. It’s a great time and the potential for lots of money to be won. Patti's café carries on the square dance tradition of having great snacks. Hope to see you at our amazing barn soon!

Although Happy Hoppers were dark with no dancing at the Washington Grange #82 this summer, we enjoyed our annual picnic on August 3. The socialization, food and fun could not have been any better. A big thank you to all who were able to attend.
The club was also excited to perform a demonstration at the Clark County Fair on August 6. Area clubs got together to dance, hoping to advertise the fun and benefits of square dancing. Flyers were available for clubs to share and inform the public of upcoming lessons.
Happy Hoppers begin our first fall session of square dance lessons on Monday, September 8, 2025. Plus lessons start at 6:30 pm, and Basic/Mainstream follows at 7:30 pm.
Our club will host Craig Abercrombie on Saturday, September 20, 2025, calling and cueing our Mainstream with some Plus dance. We look forward to seeing many of you at our 1st and 3rd Saturday dances. Come see us; we love visitors! Our website is happy-hoppers.com

We’ll gear up for our fall lesson series by performing at Oregon City Pride on September 6 in the afternoon, followed by a free introduction to square dance at Oak Grove at 7 pm that same evening
Our lessons will start on Wednesday, September 10 with a free introduction to square dancing. We’ll have another free night on September 17, and then we will teach the Social Square Dance program over the next 12 weeks.
We have a new venue for lessons! After eight years in NE Portland, we are moving a few miles south to the beautiful, air-conditioned Parish Hall at All Saints Episcopal Church, 4033 SE Woodstock Blvd., Portland 97202. This new venue will give us more room to spread out as our classes continue to grow, and we’ll also be able to have snacks while we learn. We are very excited about this new chapter in our club’s history.
Our September social dance will take place on Saturday, September 13, at Oak Grove Community Hall, 14496 SE Cedar Ave., Oak Grove. Roger Putzler will be calling. We had a chance to visit with Roger at the Central Oregon Round-up, and we are really excited for his Rosetown Ramblers debut. Please join us at 7 pm for alternating SSD and Plus tips.
We’re getting down to the wire for registrations for our annual weekend festival, Scares and Squares, which will take place October 10-12 in Beaverton. We have dancers registered from all over Oregon and as far away as Chicago. Imagine being able to dance to callers of the caliber of Vic Ceder, Darren Gallina, and Stephen Cole, and you might not even have to splurge for a motel room. (However, if you need a room, we’ve reserved a special group rate at the Beaverton Best Western. Email rtramblers@gmail.com for details.)
We round out the fall with Dan Preedy calling our November 8 dance and Janienne Alexander-Kellogg calling our December 13 dance. Fun times ahead!

The printed TVC Directories were received in July and have been mostly distributed. Some of the TVC clubs that were dark for the summer will be receiving them when they resume dancing. The online version of the Directory may be viewed by going to the "Documents" tab of the TVC website, see link above.
The Council highly recommends that all TVC dancers attend the anniversary dances held by other member clubs. September has two clubs celebrating anniversaries.
On September 6th the Wave Steppers will hold their Anniversary dance at the Garibaldi City Hall Ballroom from 5:30 to 7:30; Mark Wheeler will be calling with Lane Clem cueing. Finish off your day at the Coast with some dancing.
On September 26th the TriSquares will celebrate their 27th Anniversary featuring callers Terry Halley & K.C. Curtis with cuer Sandra Pinion. It will be held at the Kinton Grange with Rounds at 7:00, Plus at 7:15, Mainstream and Rounds at 7:30, with 4th tip Plus. See flyer in this issue.
Since the OFN is published about the 20th of the month, you still have time to plan on attending the TVC 5th Saturday dance on August 30th. The “End of Summer Dance”, co-hosted by the Eager Beavers, will be held at the Aloha Grange. Darrell Kalmbach and Tami Helms will be the caller and cuer, with the format: 7:00 to 7:15 p.m., Rounds, 7:15 to 7:30 p.m., Plus, and 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., Mainstream with every 3rd tip Plus! Your support of the TVC is appreciated.

In order to keep our angels happy, Daryl has been workshopping us with variations of plus moves. That has been a blast for this dancer.
Our new dancer lessons will begin on Sunday evenings, September 7th and 14th. The first two lessons are free.
We will be light (I guess that is opposite of dark) again in September. Our first welcome back dance will be on Friday evening, the 5th, with Daryl calling and cueing. We hope to have Renee Rudd doing some cueing soon as she is doing well in getting over her stroke. Our second dance will be on the 19th. Plus from 7-7:30 and then mainstream.
Remember our rule that if it is 90 degrees or more at 5 PM on dance night we will not be dancing.
Lastly, the CRD’s and friends promoted square dancing at the Clark County Fair the first week in August by dancing on stage and handing out flyers to anyone interested. It was a fun time and some people did show an interest.

In keeping with our all-American summer theme, on the 26th Hoedowners had an “Under the Big Top Dance” where we served that other all-American food, the hot dog! It’s a quickie meal with an endless list of toppings which transforms this simple meal to haute cuisine. Hot dogs call to mind the circus, sporting events, campfires and the microwave. Hope your hot dog was just like you like it. Michael Kious and Randy Lewis were there to make your dance evening perfect.
Looking ahead in September we’ll have two zany dances. On the September 13th we’ll be celebrating that all American sport football. Come as a fan, player or cheerleader for your favorite team.
On the 27th we’ll have a complete change with our ”Don’t Worry be Hippie Dance”. Use your imagination on this one or break out that polyester outfit you’ve been saving.
More importantly, we’ll be starting our fall lessons on Tuesday September 9th at 7 pm. The first lesson is free so round up all your friends, neighbors, whomever and join us for the great adventure that square dancing provides.

Our annual picnic at Mayfield Lake needed to be cancelled as the host was not feeling well. Our thoughts and prayers for Pat Faires.
The weekend of July 10-12 was the Washington State Square Dance Festival in Yakima. This was a wonderful event with clubs from all over Washington and Oregon. One of the events was 4 disciplines dancing at the same time to the same music score. This included Line dancing, Square Dancing, Clogging and Round Dancing. It was a great exhibition of folk dancing. There was a Panel discussion with the Presidents of all clubs discussing membership and how to keep square dancing popular. Our President, Lisa Jessen talked about the use of social media to increase membership. In addition the fruit in the area was plentiful, especially the cherries.
Some of our members had a visitation to a relatively new club, The Crazy Eights in Centralia and the Southwester Council. This is a plus club run by the husband and wife team of Leo and Rochelle Catt. Plus dancing is what they do. We had an intro to Hex dancing, an interesting style of square dancing for 6 couples.
Our second visitation was to Cougar Squares in Toledo, WA. There was a small car show. Several club members and other dancers are car enthusiasts. These cars were looking their best on a Sunny evening with Mt. St. Helens and Mt. Rainier looking down on us. As usual Cougars served up a feast along with Ice Cream Sundaes.
USA West was held in Spokane 7/24-26. Several of our members attended this National event and had a wonderful time.
August 16th begins our main membership drive with the Squirrel Fest at Civic Center Circle in Longview. We will have a street dance with basic lessons for those in the crowd who are interested in the State Dance of Washington. Terry Halley will be calling and "Angels" from R Square D will be assisting. Come out to the festival and dance, shop and visit the Beer Garden (We are in front of the Library).
September and school time is fast approaching. Our lessons will start back up on Wednesdays. Plus 6:30pm and Basic/Mainstream 7:30pm. September 3rd and 10th will be free to those who have not danced before. Craig Abercrombie is the Caller /Instructor. Our dances are scheduled for September 12th and 27th. September 12th is a Sock hop and September 27th is a Neil Diamond Tribute.

September 27 (4th Sat)• July 1st the Club Dance celebrated Independence Day at our dance. The Club had root beer floats, and hot dogs at the break.
• Club had two “visitations” in July, we visited Valley Squares on the 19th. Our dance was canceled that night because Hillsboro City had a Chalk Art Festival on Main Street and the street was closed, making parking a problem. We had thirteen of our dancers at their dance, including our caller and wife. The second visitation was to the Hayshakers on the coast with eleven dancers and our caller attending.
September activities:
• The Theme of our Mainstream Dance in September is “Roaring 20’s”. Wearing theme costumes are encouraged but not required.
• The Club will be having a campout from September 26th to the 28th at Silver Lake, Washington.
October 30th the Club is excited to have a National caller, Tony Oxendine, and our Darrell Kalmbach calling for this Plus Dance.
We are planning to have Mainstream Square Dance lessons starting January 11th, 2026. The club hopes to have a good-sized class this time; we need the new dancers.
We enjoy visitors, and we invite more dancers to visit us both at our Plus Dances on the first, third, and fifth Thursdays and the Mainstream Dances on first and second Saturdays, all at Hillsboro’s Odd Fellows Hall at Third and Main upstairs {elevator available). The dance hall is air-conditioned and has a great wood dance floor.

While the Tri Squares has been dark for the summer, we’ve had a great time visiting other clubs. A special shout out to Oak Hill Squares in Beaverton, many of our members have really enjoyed dancing with you! Your caller, Mark Wheeler, does a fantastic job of keeping the dancing at just the right level for our newer dancers, making sure everyone feels confident and has fun. Several of our newest dancers have even found a second “home” at your dances!
We had such a great turnout at Oak Hill Squares that one week we reclaimed our banner—and the very next week, we even stole theirs! It’s been a blast, and we hope to see some of you at Tri Squares soon. We’d love to return your banner with a smile! Thank you again for being so welcoming.
A few other summer highlights for our members included the Summer Festival in Salem and a visitation to the Country Cut-Ups in Boring on July 26th. It’s been a summer full of fun and friendship on the dance floor!
We’re excited to return to dancing in September at the Kinton Grange! Mark your calendars:
• Thursday, September 12th - Kickoff Dance with a Luau Party!
• Friday, September 26th at 7:00 PM - Celebrate with us at our Anniversary Dance! Everyone is welcome.
Upcoming Lessons: We’re thrilled to offer Basic Mainstream Square Dance Lessons starting in September. First Lesson: Sunday, September 28th from 3:30 - 5:30 PM. The first two lessons are FREE, so new dancers can try it out with no pressure!
We’ll also offer Cha-Cha Round Dance lessons from 2:00 – 3:15 PM, right before square dance lessons begin. Our wonderful graduates from last year are excited to return and help new dancers learn the steps and really see the joy in square dancing.
I am looking forward to dancing with all of you soon!

Our anniversary dance will be September 6th from 5:30-7:30 at the Garibaldi Community Center, 107 6th Street; Garibaldi, Oregon. Mark Wheeler will be calling with Lane Clem cueing.
The address of the Tillamook Senior Center is 316 Stillwell Avenue, Tillamook. Located on the corner of 4th and Stillwell there is no on site parking and little street parking. The huge Safeway parking lot is directly across the street. Our dances are held weekly on Tuesdays from 4:00 to 6:00 and we always have food and snacks.
