The Social Media Square

In today’s world, many first impressions happen online. Social media gives us an incredible opportunity to share the joy of square and round dancing far beyond our own halls. A smiling photo, a short video clip, or even a simple announcement of an upcoming dance can catch someone’s eye and spark interest.

Each of us has the ability to promote our activity with just a click. By sharing our experiences, we show friends and neighbors that dancing is alive, welcoming, and fun.

Together, let’s use these tools to tell our story. One post, one share, one smile at a time — we can spread the joy of dancing and open the door to new generations of dancers.

Support Mid-Winter and Keep Promotions Moving!

Let’s kick off the new year by encouraging every dancer to support our Federation-sponsored Mid-Winter Festival, January 23–25, 2026, at the Linn County Expo Center in Albany. This year’s theme, “Dance Around the Clock,”promises fun, energy, and great dancing for all levels.

Mid-Winter is one of our best opportunities to celebrate our activity, reconnect with dancers from across the state, and showcase the strength of our community. Attending— and inviting others to attend—is one of the simplest ways we can promote square and round dancing. As we focus on our theme of Promotions, remember that small actions matter. A friendly invitation, a shared flyer, or a quick mention to a neighbor can help bring new faces to our dance floor. Together, let’s support Mid-Winter, share the joy of dancing, and keep our clubs growing

Editor's Note

Cascade Callers & Cuers Assoc
Our final dance for 2025 was November 29.  We had most of our callers and cuers there including Mike Kious who had come down to give us information on the August 2026 Life's A Dance Festival.  CCCA is sponsoring this endeavor and Mike.  Mike will have flyers and information ready for the upcoming Mid-Winter Festival.  Pat Carnathan from California is the featured caller.  Our own Rikki Lobato is the featured cuer.  Pat is a well known caller with a large following.  It's going to be a FUN weekend!  Get your ribbons early!

Our dances in 2026 include January 31, May 30, August 29 (Christina's birthday is August 31, so I always bring a cake and ice cream!), and October 31, 2026 (Happy Halloween!!).  Costumes for our Halloween dance are always fun and appreciated, but it is certainly not mandatory.  We are happy when dancers come to dance with us!

Happy Calling and Cueing,

Christina Corelli, Secretary

We held two dances in November, starting off on Nov. 9 with a live caller Dan Preedy from Washington. We had two squares in attendance theist Sunday but did not manage to get two squares on the 23. We still had fun as we are a tight-knit group

We are sponsoring an advanced class on Wednesday evenings at the Emerald Square Dance Center in Springfield. We had been getting two squares on the floor, but one of the new dancers had to drop out for health reasons. Tim Matteson is the teacher and is doing a great job with the new advanced dancers. We hope they can all stick with it. By the end of January they should have all the A-1 calls and CAS will offer a Sunday dance at the A-1 level to give them more floor time. We are looking forward to having more advanced dancers in our area.

Please come join us if you are an advanced dancer who has moved to our area or may be passing through. We mostly dance on the 2nd and 4th Sundays from 1:30 to 3:30 in Hall B of the Emerald Square Dance Center at 2095 Yolanda in Springfield. We would love to have you dance with us. Be sure to call Fred Beisse at (458) 221-3564 to make sure we are dancing as we have to cancel if we cannot get more than a square of dancers out on any given scheduled dance date. Check our tentative schedule at cas-sd.yolasite.com.

See you in a square soon!

Hope you all had a wonderful holiday season.

We were more than pleasantly surprised when square dancer Melba Walker showed up at our Sunday dance!  Melba didn't have her walker!  In fact, she walked in with her sister, Joy Pitts and announced that she was going to dance.  Tim kept the tips short and slow, but Melba kept up and did great!  After Melba had broken her neck some months ago, we were lead to believe she might spend the rest of her life a quadriplegic.  Well, Melba showed everyone, didn't she?  Wow!  Melba hasn't driven yet, but we bet she'll do that before too long!  Good show Melba!  We are so proud of you!

We were dark December 7 as the NextStep dancers were rehearing for their big event.  We encourage dancers to go to their web site and check them out.  The young people work hard.  I get to attend their big end of the year events in June.  This year I get to attend their Christmas event.   (Editor’s note: Next Step rents our hall almost every day of the week and helps keep the bills paid.)

We encourage dancers from other clubs to join us Sundays from 4:00 to 6:00.  Tim will call to the floor.  Mainstream, Plus, and Advanced.

Come and join us!

Happy Dancing!

Several members of Whirl-A-Ways, past and present, attended the memorial for Bonnie Weninger who had recently passed away.  It was good to see folks we haven't seen in a long time.  So many wonderful memories were shared.  Bonnie and Leo were lifetime members of Whirl-A-Ways which is an honor bestowed upon members who have gone above and beyond supporting our club.  Our thoughts and prayers continue for Leo.  The Weninger's daughter and her family were there and shared.  It was a moving memorial for a well-loved and missed lady, Bonnie Weninger.  Bonnie and Leo had lost their son previously.

Please join us every third Saturday at the hall in Springfield.  7:00 is Plus and 7:30 to 10:00 is Mainstream with Rounds.  Our caller is Roger Putzler.  Our cuer is Christina Corelli.

Our December 20 dance is our Christmas dance and also a New Dancer' Dance.  Please come and support the new dancers.  We were all there at one time!  I remember the New Dancer Dances well.  I got to see Round Dancing and wanted to get out there so badly.  Sometimes I'd dance Frenchy Brown!  And, now I teach Frenchy Brown!

Hopefully, we'll have and enjoy our campout slated for June.  This time we'll be at Belknap Hot Springs which is east of Springfield/Eugene.  They have a lovely campground and lodge and, of course, two pools with water from the hot springs.

Happy Dancing!

We had a meeting in November and discussed how the new Callerlab list will affect the new dancer dances in our area. Time will tell.

We are considering hosting a CPR training session sometime next year, depending on how many people are interested. It will be held at the Salem Square Dance Center at a time most convenient for the attendees.

Our next meeting is in February.

First, a big thank you to the many enthusiastic new and experienced dancers who came to our new dancer dance on November 27. It was a great time.

We will not hold our 4th Saturday dance on December 27. Instead, we will be participating in a gala New Year's Eve Grand Ball square dance at the Lebanon Senior Center. The evening will begin with an Italian-themed potluck dinner at 6:15. Square dancing will be from 6:45 to 10:00, with the ball drop at 9:00.

Ball gowns and men's formal wear will be admired for this fancier event but not required. The alliance of Albany Timber Twirlers, Corvallis Square Dancers, Lebanon Square Circlers, and Sweet Home Squarenaders, will host. Everyone is invited to join the fun. Calling will be Bruce Lowther and Shaun McKinney; cuers are Sandy Harris and Sandra Pinion.

Our January 10 dance will be called by Bruce Lowther and cued by Judy Russell. Please join us for a fun evening. This will be our only January dance at home. We will be dancing with old and new friends at Mid-Winter Festival on the 4th weekend.

It's not too early to make reservations to join us on our annual beach trip on March 13 and 14. Dancing on Friday and Saturday nights and potluck lunch on Saturday will be held at Gleneden Beach Community Hall.

Our second dance in December was our new dancer dance, Christmas dance, and silent auction. Lots of things were available to purchase and take home. The money raised will benefit Windsor House, a residence for brain damaged women. We also provide decaf coffee for a year’s supply.

We have a board meeting in early January to put together a potential slate of officers for 2026-2027 starting in September.

A Valentine dance in February will be chaired by Terry McCarty. Our 66th birthday dance is the second Saturday of March.

We have set a date for our round dance weekend for August 21-22 at the Emerald Square Dance Center. Put the date on your calendar to attend. There will be two halls available, and camping is allowed on site. More details will come as we get together at Mid-Winter. There will be cuers from around the state to entertain you. There are thoughts for a workshop for newer cuers to encourage them in their endeavors.

The Sunday waltz class has completed the Phase 2 moves and is working on some easy Phase 3 moves that are frequently used in Phase 2. Our plan is to graduate on January 4, 2026.

The Thursday evening dancing is dependent on how many dancers are available to attend. If not enough, then we go dark for the night. We are working on various moves that show up during some dances. Some multi-rhythm dancing is what is currently being done. Come and join us.

Happy New Year everyone!

Our November 23 Turkey Trot Jamboree was a success with 105 dancers in attendance. We are glad to have served you a Thanksgiving dinner and greatly appreciate all the students and angels that turned out! Many thanks to our Club Caller, Scott Zinser, and Dave (& Patty) Cooper, who drove all the way from Port Orford to cue for us.

A few Chaps members visited the Tri-Squares on November 28. They returned our C&P Banner. Surprise! Happy New Year!

Since this newsletter publishes in late December, just a reminder that Chaps will be dark on January 2, 2026. Be safe!

We’ll host only one dance in January: an “Elvis” theme on January 16 with Mark Wheeler calling and Julie Stiers cueing. Won’t you come ‘rock’ with us!

Happy Hoppers are "treemendously" excited to share that even with the holiday season being busy, they kept their dance club active with their first and third Saturday dances. Craig Abercrombie, club caller, always keeps them dancin' and prancin’. Plus dance on the first Saturday and Mainstream with some Plus on the third Saturday. Round Dancing is cued for both.

The club will continue lessons right up to the holiday. On Monday, December 22 at Grange #82 in Vancouver, WA, you will see a celebration for the second session of lessons given this year. Happy Hoppers are eager to have new students (and past students) "dashing" to the Beginner Dance on Monday from 7:30-9:00 pm.  Please come and join the fun. Social time and snacks to follow. Area clubs are encouraged to bring their new students. Craig Abercrombie will be calling to floor level.

January will "slide" in quickly and our club has a fun month planned. Craig will be calling and cueing our January 3 Plus dance and also our January 17 Mainstream dance with some Plus. Dance times are 7:00-9:30 pm. The club is planning a soup, salad, and dessert potluck at 6:00 pm before our January 17 dance. Everyone welcome!

A brand-new session of lessons will begin on Monday, January 5, 2026. This new session will again feature eight Monday night lessons followed by a Beginner dance on February 23, 2026 at 7:30 pm. Lesson time has been so well attended, with Plus at 6:30 pm followed by Basic/Mainstream at 7:30 pm. Lots of joy and laughter on the dance floor. Come join the fun!

We encourage all dancers to get out and dance. Our club has new travel banners, and we enjoy capturing and retrieving banners. Watch out ... we may head your way!

See you dancing.

Tualatin Valley Council - Link
The Tualatin Valley Council meeting was held via Zoom on November 24, 2025, with 17 members in attendance. President Sally Duyck presided over the meeting where various topics were discussed.

The meeting began with greetings and introductions of those present. A review of the 2026 TVC dances was given including the next event in January. Committee reports were presented and accepted. It was announced that program books for the Mid Winter Festival would be available at the November 29th dance. A tradition has come to an end. Due to lack of participation the annual TVC Presidents Appreciation Potluck Dinner will no longer be held. A standard TVC meeting will take its place. The annual TVC Recognition Award will be presented at the New Years Eve dance.

The next TVC event is a 5th Saturday Dance on January 31st 2026 at the Aloha Grange featuring the calling of Mike Kious and the cueing of Lane Clem. It will have our standard dance format: 7:00 to 7:15 pm, Rounds, 7:15 to 7:30 pm, Plus, and 7:30 to 9:30 pm, Mainstream with every 3rd tip Plus.

Since the OFN is published about the 20th of the month, you still have time to plan on attending the TVC New Year’s Eve dance. It will be at the IOOF Hall in Hillsboro with Darrell Kalmbach calling and Tami Helms cueing. A ham dinner will be served at 6 pm before the dancing. We will have a short break from dancing at 9:00 pm to celebrate New Years along with Eastern Time zone.

As we begin a new year, it is a time to reflect back on the past year. We had some good news and some not so good news this past year. The good news includes the progress our students have made in feeling confident with their dancing. The not so good news was one of the newer callers Daryl was teaching had a mini stroke which set her back some. Then she fell and broke her femur and that set her back some more. The good news is that she has recovered from the mini stroke and can maneuver around enough to visit and start her lessons again.

We look forward to a great new year. To bring in the New Year we will be hosting Adam Christman and Craig Abercrombie in our traditional New Years Eve dance starting at 8:00PM.

Our first January dance will be a beginner/basic dance on Sunday, January 4th, starting at 5 pm. We invite all new dancers to attend. There will be lots of angels to assist.

Our new beginner class will begin on the following Sunday, the 11th, with our regular dances continuing on the 2nd and 16th with Daryl calling and cueing. Come join us.

Eager Beavers - Link
Eager Beavers honored our veterans on November 11th by offering them free admission to our dance, and many attendees wore red, white, and blue in recognition of the holiday. On November 24th, we danced for “calorie credits” to help balance out our Thanksgiving feasts!

Since the OFN is published about the 20th of the month, you still have time to plan on attending our Christmas Dance on December 22nd. We take photos so wear you Christmas finest.

On January 19th from 1:00 to 3:00pm, Eager Beavers will host a special memorial dance in honor of our beloved cuer, Jeanine Norden. All net proceeds from the afternoon will be donated to Golden Bond Rescue, Jeanine’s favorite charity where she and her husband, Paul, fostered and adopted many dogs. Darrell Kalmbach will be the caller and Tami Helms with Lane Clem the cuers. Refreshments will be served after the dance.

You are welcome to join us for Plus with Phase II and III Rounds at the Aloha Grange every Monday afternoon from 1:00 to 3:00. For current dancing information, please see our website at https://EagerBeavers.info. (see link above).

And don’t forget, we dance the Monday after Mid-Winter, so join us if you want to keep the fun going!

Happy New Year from the Hayshakers! We’re stepping into January with plenty of energy and lots of opportunities to dance. As always, Mark Wheeler is calling for us every Sunday at 5:00 p.m. We dance at the Pacific Grange on Hwy 101, conveniently located halfway between Seaside and Astoria. Our Sunday evenings continue to be relaxed, friendly, and filled with easy dancing that everyone can enjoy.

Our Basic 2 square dance lessons roll on each week from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., giving new dancers lots of support and returning dancers plenty of practice. After lessons, we spend fifteen minutes on Plus practice to help dancers stretch their skills just a bit more.

On the fourth Sunday of the month, we host our class-level dance, where students get to put their new skills into action. Afterward, everyone is welcome to stay for a potluck dinner, always a highlight and a great way to visit with new and old friends.

We hope to see plenty of smiling faces joining us this January, come dance, learn, and share in the fun with the Hayshakers!

Hoedowners - Link
The Hoedowners wrapped up a festive November with two lively dances: On November 8th we held our Turkey Toss Dance with Michael and Randy calling and cueing the fun. Despite the name, no turkeys were harmed, or tossed! Instead, dancers competed with bean bags to win their holiday birds. (The turkeys thank us every year.)

Then, on November 22nd, we celebrated the season with our Harvest Dance, featuring Caller Randy Dibble and Cuer Randy Lewis. It was a great way to round out the month and glide into the holidays.

Looking ahead to January, on the 10th we’ll host our Welcome New Students Dance, again with the ever-energetic duo Michael and Randy. Bring your enthusiasm, your best square-dance grin, and maybe a friend who’s curious about joining the fun. It’s the perfect chance for new dancers to jump in and experienced dancers to show them how much fun the Hoedowners are.

We’ll be dark on January 24th so our members can attend the Mid-Winter Festival in Albany, where the featured caller this year is Ray Brendzy from British Columbia, always a treat to dance to.

Here’s to a bright start to the new year, happy dancing!

We are all thankful for our Square Dance Community, and November's Thanksgiving Theme gave us an opportunity to show our gratitude. The Thanksgiving Dance brought a nice crowd to laugh and dance together, followed by sweet treats including several pumpkin pies. The inoperable heating system did not deter us from enjoying exceptionally lively dancing to keep warm! We were graced by several Square Dancers from Australia who were visiting in the area. Andrew Dale, a caller from Cairns, Australia, called several dances and taught us a new move, the "Grand Slide".

Our club will begin mainstream lessons and new dancers may join January 12th, 19th, and 26th, taught by Mark Wheeler. The cost is $6.00 at the door, and lessons will run from 7:00 to 8:00. Regular mainstream dancing will take place from 8:00 to 9:00.

Anyone interested in learning Round Dancing may join February 2nd and February 8th with Lane Clem teaching/cueing. Cost is also $6:00. If new dancers would like to take both mainstream and round dance lessons, the cost will be $10.00 for both lessons.

R Square D had 76 dancers attend the Veteran’s dance on November 14th that honored Scott Lee, who died in August, and all veterans got in free that night. We also had several students attend the dance, which Craig Abercrombie called at their level. Susan Healea cued that night and there was an abundance of patriotic music for both the squares and rounds! Our Gospel Dance on the 22nd was also well attended with 46 dancers there, and Craig and Susan provided great music and fun dancing throughout the night.

We have only one dance in January, which is on the 9th, and called “Snow Ball”. Craig and Susan will again call and cue this dance. We are dark on January 24th and are encouraging our members to attend Mid-Winter that weekend.

A new set of lessons begins on January 7th, with Plus 6:30 to 7:30, Basic 7:30 to 8:30, and Mainstream review/workshop 8:30 to 9:00 (after the first two weeks this half-hour will be a continuation of the beginning lessons). Our students who started lessons in September will graduate at our January 9th dance and all are joining R Square D, which gives us ten new members! Many thanks to our club president, Lisa Jessen, who not only makes fabulous flyers for club events but also does extensive media outreach for our lessons that has drawn in a large number of students and eventual members these last 18 months.

November was a month filled with gratitude. Our first dance of the month celebrated thankfulness, complete with great dancing and an impressive assortment of delicious pies that we shared while enjoying each other’s company. Our second dance on November 28th, themed "Fall into Fun", highlighted sports and favorite hobbies. Dancers came dressed in team shirts, gardener aprons, chef hats, and even with computer mice! We were also delighted to welcome two visitors from Australia—one of whom is a caller who treated us to his wonderful singing and calling.

Our club and Grange co-hosted the TVC New Dancer Jamboree on November 29th; It was a fun filled evening with nearly seven squares enjoying the calling of Scott Zinser and cueing by Lane Clem.

Looking ahead, we have two dances coming up after the holidays: Friday, December 26th, "Snowflake Ball". Wear something that represents your favorite pastime. Then on January 9th is our First Dance of the New Year with a Country & Western theme.

Please note: Our January 23rd dance is cancelled as many of our members will be traveling to Albany, OR for the MidWinter Festival.

All dances are held at the Kinton Grange in Beaverton, beginning at 7:00 PM with Rounds and Plus, followed by Mainstream at 7:30 PM.

As we wrap up another wonderful year, I want to thank each of you for being part of this amazing square dance community. The holiday season is a time to celebrate friendship, connection, and the joy of belonging, something that I am grateful to share with all of you. Wishing you a warm and cheerful holiday season and a bright, happy New Year filled with great memories.

Before we look ahead to the New Year, here’s a quick recap of our November fun: We started the month with our Friday, November 7ᵗʰ dance, featuring George Hermann calling and Connie Clark cueing. George and Connie brought great energy, and our dancers matched it step for step. A lively night and a wonderful way to roll into the holiday season!

Our second dance was on Saturday, November 15ᵗʰ, with Scott Zinser calling and Connie Clark cueing. Scott kept the floor moving, Connie kept the rounds smooth, and our dancers kept the smiles going. November gave us two wonderful opportunities to dance with friends, and we made the most of them!

January is shaping up to be a fun start to 2026, and we’re kicking off the year with two great dances you won’t want to miss!

Our first dance which we plan to start swinging and a twirling will be on Friday, January 2ⁿᵈ, with a cheerful “Happy New Year” theme. Mark Wheeler will be calling as we celebrate the arrival of 2026. Bring your holiday sparkle, and glitter is optional but highly encouraged! Then, on Saturday, January 17ᵗʰ, we’ll host our “Let’s Dance” night with Scott Zinser calling. This evening is all about fun, friendship, and filling the floor. If you’ve been waiting for the perfect time to shake off the winter chill, this is it!

Make your plans, mark your calendars, and come join us as we dance our way into the New Year!

Wavesteppers dance at the Tillamook Senior Center from 4-6pm on Tuesday each week. The huge Safeway parking lot is directly across the street. Our dances are held weekly on Tuesdays from 4:00 to 6:00 and we always have food and snacks.

The Wavesteppers will be dark on December 23rd and 30th. We would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
