Supporting New Callers and Cuers
Our dance community depends on talented callers and cuers to keep dances fun and exciting. Many of our seasoned pros are getting older, and new talent is needed to keep the music playing. Even small encouragements—like mentorship or cheering them on—make a big difference!
The Oregon Federation offers grant money to support training for callers and cuers. Grants can cover classes, workshops, or other learning opportunities. Know someone ready to try calling or cueing? Encourage them to apply—their skills are key to the future of dancing in Oregon.

Music licensing can be a confusing topic, especially when technology brings new ways of sharing our love for square dance and round dance with people near and far. Recently, I received two questions from callers and cuers grappling with whether their online dance activities were covered by their current licenses. While the details of their situations were unique, the core issue was the same: Is it legal to use or share music performances online when you’re licensed through organizations like CallerLab or Round-A-Lab? I want to share these scenarios (with the details changed for privacy) and my answers, in hopes that it will help others who might be wondering the same things.
Imagine you’re a caller, let’s call him “Sam,” who’s licensed through a national caller association. Sam is invited to lead a workshop for a square dance group in another state, and because of travel limitations, the group decides to host the event via a video platform like Zoom. The group dances in a local church, and the church offers its sound system, TV, and paid video conferencing account. The church staff set up and host the online meetings, and, to the best of everyone’s knowledge, nothing is recorded or posted on the internet.
Afterward, someone tells Sam that he might be violating copyright or streaming rules because the dance music was played online. This raises the big question: Does Sam’s license allow him to stream music for a group dancing together in a different location using Zoom or a similar service?
Based on my research, the standard licenses provided by national caller and cuer organizations (like CallerLab and Round-A-Lab) generally do not give you the right to broadcast, stream, or transmit the music over the internet or any online service to people outside the premises where the license applies. In other words, your license allows you to perform music for a live audience in the same room, but not to stream that performance online—even if the session is private and not recorded. This is because the language in most music licensing agreements specifically restricts transmission to outside listeners, and covers only live, in-person use.
If you’re interested in transmitting music or performances online, you’d need to look into a different kind of license, such as a “mechanical license,” which might cover online broadcasts. But these are outside the scope of the standard caller or cuer licenses, and you’d need to do some additional research or seek legal advice to be sure.
In another case, let’s say “Taylor,” a cuer, gets a request from a dance group in another state. They want to use Taylor’s pre-recorded cues at their events and are even willing to pay for the privilege. The group assumes it’s legal as long as a licensed caller is the one playing the recording during the dance. Taylor isn’t so sure and asks: Is it okay to sell or share these cue recordings for use at public dances?
Again, the answer comes down to what your current license allows. From what I’ve found, licenses through organizations like Round-A-Lab do not cover the right to broadcast, transmit, or otherwise share performances—including recorded cues—outside of the premises where the license applies. The contracts specifically say you can’t stream or play these performances over online channels, and that includes not only live streaming but also playing pre-recorded cues at public events. There is a big difference between using recordings for your own practice at home (which is generally okay) and playing them in a public setting or event, even if everyone involved is licensed. Once you record your cues over music, you’ve created a new version of the music—one that requires a “mechanical license” in order to be shared or sold to others. Selling or sharing these recordings without the proper license would mean both the seller and the buyer are not covered: the seller doesn’t have the right to distribute, and the buyer doesn’t have the right to play the altered music publicly. To sum up: your standard performance license covers you for live, in-person performances only. If you want to stream, share, or sell recordings, you’ll need a different kind of license, and it’s important to check with the organizations or seek legal advice before proceeding.
Music licensing is complicated, but understanding the basics can keep you and your group on the right side of the law and help preserve the joy of dancing for everyone. If you have questions, don’t hesitate to ask me, your licensing organization, or do some research before trying something new. It’s always better to be safe—and legal—than sorry!

For the past 30 years the Tualatin Valley Council has recognized a couple or individual who has made a significant contribution to the square dancing community. This award is for outstanding dedication and consistently promoting square and round dancing.
We are pleased to announce the TVC Recognition Award for 2025 is presented to
Garrett Hoerer.
This award is given out annual to individuals who are dedicated to square dancing, someone who is willing to help out in any capacity, as an officer or sweeping the floors and emptying the trash.
This year’s recipient goes for beyond those expectations.
Our person this year not only helps out their own club but several clubs by showing up for lessons and supporting the dances of several clubs and has done this for over 35 years. They attend dances locally, out of our local area and many national dances, including Oregon and Washington.
This individual normally seeks out a capacity to “help” rather than simply participate. He is often unnoticed but always working at something. He does this with quiet dignity, never seeking recognition, simply because it needs to be done.
We all know this person. He is always there working, and always supporting our dancing community.
It is my pleasure to know this person and so happy to introduce Garrett Hoerer as the 2025 TVC Recognition Award recipient.
Sharon Driscoll, longtime member of Bachelor & Bachelorettes and other clubs, passed away quietly on January 14. Her funeral service will be held on Friday, January 23 at 1 PM, at the LDS Church, 9901 SE Caruthers, Portland, OR.
I know so many of us have fond memories of Sharon and Glen. She will be missed just as Glen was when he passed.

A number of CCCA callers and cuers were in attendance at the New Year's Eve dance put on by the Buccaneers. The cost to get in was $2.50 a person just like 30 years ago!
Happy New Year, Everyone!
Happy calling and cueing for you,
Christina Corelli
We were sorry to hear that one of our members who newly returned to dancing with us after, accidentally broke her arm and will be out of commission for a while. Laurie Cooley returned after about five years, and it seemed she had not skipped a beat, but we know that as soon as her arm healed, she will be right back with us. Get better soon, Laurie!
We are holding our two dances a month in January on the 1st and 3rd Sunday. In February, we will continue this pattern once again dancing on the 1st and 15th, with the dance on the 15th at the A1 level so our advanced class can join us and get some more floor time. In March again we will have dances on the 1st and 15th with the 15th at the A1 level with the class invited to join us again. This time we will have a live caller, Kris Jensen from Albuquerque, NM, calling to give the class and us a real treat. Please consider coming to join us at any of these sessions. We dance from 1:30 to 3:30 at the Emerald square Dance Center, 2095 Yolanda St. in Springfield in Hall B which is located behind the building. We are always casual and refreshments are available.
Happy dancing, everyone.

We were thrilled to have Melba return to square dancing after a horrendous fall which left her with a broken neck. She's been through a lot, but she persevered and is back to dancing! Her doctors are all amazed, and we are so happy.
Please call David Lajoie at 541-520-7311 if you wish to make sure we are dancing.
We welcome all guests! We’re always casual dress.
Happy dancing,
Christina Corelli
We hosted a new dancer dance in December which was a lot of fun. We had pizza and salad before the dance.
On February 10 a number of Whirl-A-Ways members and some members of other clubs attended a memorial gathering for Paul Cunningham. Paul was 93 when he passed away in early December. Paul's family was grateful and truly amazed at how many dancers showed up. Paul had danced with many clubs during his lifetime including Golden Squares, River Road Mixers, Daisy Chainers and Whirl-A-Ways. He was a member of all of these clubs and held offices in many of them. Even when he could no longer dance he would show up to dances to visit with us. Paul made a difference and is missed.
We look forward to a club campout at Winchester Bay in April.
We hope to see you all at Mid-Winter Festival in Albany which is coming up soon.
Happy dancing,
Christina Corelli
We are tentatively offering Plus lessons starting Sunday, February 8, at 5:00 p.m. at the McMinnville Grange. Bruce Lowther will be teaching. Call Don Myatt at 503-474-7503 or Trena Worthington at 503-460-8170 to be sure!
We invite you to our February 19 dance at 5:00 p.m. at the McMinnville Grange. Bruce and Judy will be back.
We would like to acknowledge the passing of one of our members, Kevin Stewart, in December. There was a Celebration of Life in December, and at our New Dancers Dance in December, we had a moment of silence. Kevin belonged to and supported several clubs. He was such a pleasant guy, a good dancer, too, and he loved to dance! He will be so missed. Let’s keep his family and close friends in our prayers.
Give your loved ones a Yellow Rock and your Square Dance family, too. Life is short. We hope to see you soon at one of our upcoming dances.

February brings our first meeting of the year. We have some discussions coming about the new Mainstream list and the new Plus list. We will also check on putting together a list for nominations for office.

Some changes to the Practices and Procedures are coming, including a change of the date for the appointment of the nominating committee from January to November.
We graduated several dancers from the mainstream class on January 11 with a potluck included. KC got a surprise gift also.

The Sunday round dance class will continue with Phase 3 waltz lessons starting on February 15 at 3:30 p.m. We are hoping for a good class of dancers who are ready to move up from beginning lessons, or some dancers who need to refresh what they know. On that note…we are very excited to announce we’re having Mainstream lessons for the first time in about three years! We’re starting on Sunday, February 22 from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. at the Salem Square Dance Center. The cost is $7.00 per student and Angels dance for free. The first lesson is free for everyone! We decided to teach the new Mainstream format since that’s going to start for all of us in the fall anyway, which will mean new dancers will finish in only 12 lessons! Everyone is welcome.

Our Black and White Ball on January 10 featured Stephen Cole at the mic, and seven squares on the floor. It was amazing to see all the variations of black and white attire. (Check out the picture in the photos section of the February OFN.) We were thrilled to have a visitation from Country Cut-ups, who took home our Ramblers banner with the gold braid to recognize their outstanding contribution to the evening. We also were visited by representatives of the Mid-Winter Festival, who were resplendent in color-coordinated evening attire. So much fun!
See you at Mid-Winter!

A successful TVC New Year’s Eve dance with nearly 10 squares was held at the IOOF Hall, Hillsboro. Valley Squares took home the attendance banner for highest percentage of club attending. We began with a ham dinner, and then danced for a couple hours. At the break TVC President Sally Duyck announced the recipient of the Tualatin Valley Council “Recognition Award”. This award is for outstanding service and special contribution to the square dance community within the TVC geographical area. The TVC Recognition Award for 2025 was presented to Garrett Hoerer. Congratulations! We adjourned to the dining room for a New Years celebration at 12AM EST toasting with sparkling cider. We hit the dance floor again and then back for desserts. Oh my! Desserts, desserts, desserts! What a great night.
The Council strongly encourages all TVC dancers attend the anniversary dances held by other member clubs. On February 14th the Hoedowners will hold their 76th Anniversary dance at the Aloha Grange from 7:00 to 9:00, Michael Kious calling and Randy Lewis cueing. A lasagna dinner precedes the dance at 6:00. See Hoedowners flyer in the "Flyers" section of the OFN.
Since the OFN is published on the 20th of the month, you still have time to plan on attending the TVC 5th Saturday dance on January 31st. The dance at the Aloha Grange will feature the calling of Mike Kious and Lane Clem cueing. The format will be: 7:00 to 7:15 pm Rounds, 7:15 to 7:30 pm Plus, and 7:30 to 9:30 pm Mainstream with every 3rd tip Plus.
The next TVC meeting is scheduled for Monday, January 26th at 7 pm via Zoom.

We will be squaring up for our two regular dances on February 6th and 20th with Daryl calling and cueing. We hope to be joined by Renee Ruud if her healing continues to improve. We all know she wants to get back. It has been a long road coming back, but she is a real trooper.
As this will be posted before February 1st, l encourage everyone to get down to Albany for the Mid-Winter Festival.

The 5th Monday Dine Out was on December 29th at Backwoods Brewery in Hillsboro. A group of 27 dancers showed up, proving that holiday leftovers can, in fact, be ignored. Good food, good company, and lots of visiting. Everyone left happy, full, and already wondering when the next dine out would be.
A highlight came at the TVC New Year’s Dance, where our very own Garrett Hoerer was honored with the TVC Recognition Award. This well-deserved recognition celebrated his many years of contributions to the square dance community, and we are so proud of him! Ending December on this high note sets the stage for an exciting new year of dancing ahead!
We are starting our Plus lessons on February 9th from 12:00 to 1:15. After the second lesson students will be welcome to stay and dance for one class-level tip following lessons, as our caller and instructor Darrell Kalmbach adjusts the level to include calls taught so far. Please note that our regular Monday dances will be from 1:15 to 3:00 during our lesson series, rather than starting at 1:00.
Come join us for Plus with Darrell Kalmbach calling, and Phase II and III Rounds featuring Tami Helms and Lane Clem on alternate Mondays at the Aloha Grange from 1:00 to 3:00. For current dancing information, please see our website at https://EagerBeavers.info. (See link above).

Mainstream lessons run from 5:00 to 7:00 pm and are almost complete; these are followed by a short Mainstream dance for Angels. On the fourth Sunday of the month, we celebrate with a class level dance followed by a potluck dinner, because nothing fuels fancy footwork like casseroles and cookies!
Whether it’s braving rainy festival weekends or mastering a new call, the Hayshakers know how to dance, laugh, and make memories, one spin at a time.
Craig Holt
Fuel up first with a lasagna dinner at 6:00 pm, because nothing says “romance” and “square dancing” like carbs. And since it’s Valentine’s Day, bring your sweetheart, your favorite dancer, or someone who owes you a dance.
Come celebrate love, laughter, and 76 years of do-si-do-ing through life together. Hearts, hugs, and happy feet guaranteed!

February 28 (4th Sat)• Promenaders had thirty volunteer members come to the hall to decorate the hall for Christmas, and the club bought and cooked 5-family size Papa Murphy’s pizzas. We decorated the hall, ate all the pizza, it was good, it was fun, and the hall looked good, too.
• At our monthly Club Meeting we decided not to have a campout next year because very few of the club members have campers anymore. We also decided to go dark on January 1st, and July 4th and also dark on September 19th so we can go to the Federation Meeting dance at the Kinton Grange that night.
• This year’s Seaside Sashay Festival is where Sunset Promenaders and Hayshakers clubs work together to put on and share the profit. The festival is a lot of work, but it has been profitable so far, 236 dancers attended this year.
• The December 20th mainstream Christmas theme dance had a contest on cookies and there were several good cookie entries and dancers rated them and the winner’s got prizes. See the pictures at the Gallery on our website.
• The Oregon Federation of Square Dance awards a Randall Award every year to someone or a couple for outstanding work in square dancing community, Lane and Marie Clem, club members, have been nominated for the Randall Award.
• We are scheduled to begin Mainstream Square Dance Lessons on January 11th. We have a few people who have contacted us interested in taking the lessons. Hopefully, we can get enough students to help the Club grow this year.
• Promenaders hosted the TVC New Years Eve Dinner and Dance. We prepared a full ham dinner expecting about sixty to seventy diners and dancers.
February Club Activities:

December also brought our annual Christmas Party. Thirty-two Tri Squares members gathered to enjoy Chinese food and a spirited White Elephant gift exchange filled with laughter and surprises.
Looking ahead to February, we will continue our Mainstream lessons and are excited to offer line dancing for five weeks starting February 1, from 1:45–3:15 pm. Each lesson is a standalone class, so you’re welcome to attend one, two, or all five. If you’re free on any of those Sundays, please stop by the Kinton Grange and join us!
We have two dances planned for February:
• Friday, February 13th, Hearts & Flowers, wear something festive for Valentine’s Day, such as red, white, and/or hearts.
• Friday, February 27th, Mardi Gras, our annual Masquerade Ball, complete with a mask contest!
All dances are held at the Kinton Grange in Beaverton, beginning at 7:00 PM with Rounds and Plus, followed by Mainstream at 7:30 PM.
We hope to see you on the dance floor soon!

On Saturday, December 20th, we held our annual “Merry Christmas” dance with Scott Zinser calling and Connie Clark cueing. Between the festive music, holiday smiles, and excellent dancing, it was a wonderful way to celebrate the season. Santa would have approved (and maybe tried a dosado).
Looking ahead to February, we have two fun dances planned. Our Friday, February 6th dance will feature Mark Wheeler calling with Connie Clark cueing. Then on Saturday, February 21st, Scott Zinser returns as caller, once again joined by Connie Clark cueing. If you haven’t danced to Scott lately, bring your dancing shoes, and maybe your listening ears too.
So mark your calendars, grab a friend (or two), and come join Valley Squares as we dance, laugh, and have fun together. We promise smiles are included, no extra charge!!
